BASIC CONCEPTS OF WEB DESIGNING

• What is the Web ?– The World Wide Web (abbreviated

as WWW or W3, commonly known as the web), is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet.

Source : Wikipedia

– The computers that make up the web can be connected all the time [24 x 7]. These computers are typically called ‘servers’.

Page 3: ADVANCED COMPUTERS

1st Web Server A NeXT Computer was used by Berners-Lee as the world's first web server and also to write the first web browser, WorldWideWeb, in 1990.Servers have special software installed, called server-software, which ‘serves’ web pages and web sites.

How does a web surfer find a web site?

Page 5: ADVANCED COMPUTERS

How does a website get an official address?

• Registering Domain Name [ Domain name details in next slide ]– Domain names are official unique

addresses on the web.– Registration costs few bucks (approx. `500

to `3000) each year to ‘own’ the name depending on the QoS [Quality of Service].

• Renting server space to ‘host’ your website– Renting space on a server to ‘serve’ your

website to the World Wide Web is often called ‘hosting’.

Different Domain Names & their differences

Practically, there is no difference these days as Search Engines (Bing, Google, Yahoo, etc.) don’t discriminate between .COM, .ORG, .NET and all! .COM sounds more familiar as it was the 1st publicly known domain extension & people tend to type it automatically!

Note:- www.google.com is not same as www.google.ru or www.google.fr or any other domain. Search a common topic to notice the language difference!

A Cheaper Option!• Personal [non-commercial] users

generally opt out of buying domains & paying for hosting.

• Such users look out for ‘free’ hosting service that allows to create a ‘sub-domain’ [part of another domain].

• E.g. Website of Vartak College, Vasaihttps://sites.google.com/site/vartakcollegeorg/

Let me show you how easy it is to create a free personal website within 2 minutes! [Even before your maggi is ready! ]

A website is just a bunch of webpages connected together through something called links.A link is an absolute link if the URL and file name can be found from anywhere on the Web, not just from a single Web site. E.g. <a href=http://www.lsraheja.org/> Click here to visit L. S. Raheja College online! </a>

A relative link specifies the name of the file to be linked to only as it is related to the current document.E.g. <a http://www.lsraheja.org/DeptBMM.aspx/> Details of BMM course! </a>

Building a Webpage• Use a pre-made template

– Website design templates can be found in various formats like Photoshop and HTML [Hypertext Markup Language].

• Use HTML editor like Frontpage or Dreamweaver– HTML editors make building web pages

feel like (to a certain extent) creating a document in Microsoft Word !

• Hand-code your HTML in a text editor like Notepad– This means you type in the HTML code

yourself. This is the approach we are going to use here as it’s the quickest way to learn how to build webpages.
