What’s Important to You?

Today, I had a million and one things going on. It seemed like at the office everyone wanted something, whether it was my co-workers or boss. To make matters worse, my family and friends were contacting me, asking when I would be available to plan certain events for them. I felt pulled in a million directions and all I wanted to do was go home and not talk to anyone for the next twelve hours. Needless to say, my needs were put on the back burner. Then I stopped, for a moment and imagined I was one of my singles at Great Expectations.

Many singles I meet are very focused on specific parts of their life such as their careers, their family or perhaps social activities like organizing charity events. Of course, these are understandable things for people to focus their attention on; but more than half the time when I turn to these men and women and ask, “What about YOU?” I’m answered with a blank stare.

It’s a common problem that a lot people don’t like to admit to. We feel like so many things are a huge priority and we put all our energy into certain aspects of our life. But how many of us can say, “Today I took care of myself rather than everyone else!”?

In fact, this is a huge reason many people join Great Expectations. They’re acknowledging they want to make a change and invest in themselves. They want to put the effort into their own personal life rather than to benefit others. Unfortunately, old habits die hard.

So I imagined I was one of my singles at Great Expectations. That I had just gone through this very busy day and I was exhausted. Then I imagined my

phone ringing, and it is another single who I’m trying to meet through Great Expectations. Chances are they want to talk to me for an extended period of time or maybe ask me out for drinks.

I’ll be honest. I wouldn’t answer the phone. I would be way too tired and think, “I’ll get back to that.”

It’s true, and you would do the same too!

But this is exactly what you should NOT be doing in the dating world. If it had been work, your family or your friends calling you would have answered, because they are a priority in your mind. But when it’s someone who has expressed interest in you, suddenly they aren’t important? This is backwards logic. Of all the phone calls today, THIS is the one you should be putting the most thought into.

You’ve made a decision that you want make a change, yet here you are, dismissing your need to find someone for yourself. Finding a match is difficult; how can you expect results if you’re not even putting your best foot forward?

The fact is you won’t fall in love until you look at your life and decide: I’m going to put as much effort into finding someone as I do for the other aspects of my life.

So my message to singles is: Try focusing on yourself for once. Not what others need, but what YOU need. If you want to find your soul mate then do it! Look at what you’ve accomplished in your career or with your family. If you dedicated the same amount of effort and time into just what you want, think of what you would accomplish!

When Mary’s husband of 26 years passed away in 1989, she was convinced that she was going to be alone for the rest of her life. But after living as a widow for 21 years, a casual acquaintance of hers finally asked “Mary, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?” When Mary replied, “I don’t know.” Her friend suggested Great Expectations Scottsdale, since that is where she met her husband. This may have been the best piece of advice for Mary. After joining Great Expectations Scottsdale, Mary met fellow member Gene in 2010. They took their relationship slow at first, but eventually fell deeply in love and were married April 28th, 2012. Of course, Gene and Mary were not alone while in the single world. In Scottsdale alone there are thousands of single men and women looking for their match. However, between balancing a busy schedule and avoiding all the wrong people at the bar scene it’s becoming increasingly difficult to meet new people. That’s where Great Expectations Scotts-dale comes in! Over the last 35 years Great Ex-pectations has perfected a suite of match-making services that emphasizes dating with a purpose. Thunderbird Artists, the leading producer of award-winning fine art & wine festivals is heading west to the City of Surprise! Thunderbird Artists and The City of Surprise are partner-ing for the Surprise Fine Art & Wine Festival, February 1, 2 & 3, 2013 and look forward to building this to be an annual event.

Juried artists travel from around the country and state of Arizona. There will be an excess of 2,500+ pieces of art displayed in mediums such as oil on canvas, watercolors, acrylics and mixed media paintings. Patrons will have the opportunity to meet and converse with the artists during all three days of the event.The charity hosting the wine tasting event is the Surprise Sundancers re-ceiving 25% of gross wine ticket sales. The Surprise Sundancers, founded in 2002, are the official Spring Training volunteer organization of the Kan-sas City Royals, Texas Rangers and the City of Surprise. The Sundancers are a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that currently consists of over 750 members and also provide volunteer services at the Surprise

Recreation Campus.

Starting with the basic senses (look, smell & taste) the expansive wine list allows patrons the opportunity to learn how to taste wines like the pros! Patrons can smell numerous unique scents, but their taste perception is limited to salty, sweet, sour and bitter. It is the combination of smell with tasting that allows patrons to distin-guish between the different flavors. Sampling a good collection of wines all at the same time permits patrons the opportunity to make better choices. For $10, patrons receive an engravedsouvenir wine glass, six wine tasting tickets. Bob from Oh, Fudge will be busy making fudge throughoutthe festival for the patrons that like watching the art of creating fudge.

Strolling throughout the supreme gathering of artists, sampling great wines and listening to musical enter-tainment is what Thunderbird Artists is best recognized for along with their fine reputation. “We are excited to bring a unique experience of quality fine art to the West Valley and the rap-idly growing community of Surprise,” said Denise Dale, Vice President of Thunderbird Artists.

RESPECT: A MUSICAL JOURNEY OF WOMEN RETURNS TO HERBERGER THEATER FOR JUST 3 WEEKS

From “Stand By Your Man” to Aretha’s “R.E.S.P.E.C.T,” the interna-tional hit musical Respect: A Musical Journey of Women returns to Phoenix for a limited three-week engage-ment to celebrate the exciting story of women in the 20th century through more than 60 Top 40 songs. The show will run at Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe, from Feb. 13 through March 3.

Created by Vanderbilt University professor Dr. Dorothy Marcic based on her book, RESPECT: Women and Popular Music, the show includes hits like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend,” “Where The Boys Are,” “I Am Woman” and dozens more up to the present day. Marcic’s book analyzed Top-40 female song lyrics since 1900.

Performances are Wednesdays at 2 and 7 p.m., Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 and 5 p.m. Tickets are $49.50 for balcony seats and $57.50 for orchestra and mez-zanine. EVERY WINTER OUR MINDS TURN TO “MUSH”

Every year, Sunrise Park Resort hosts the annual Winter Games Sled Dog Race, which takes place in the cross-country ski area at the entrance to the ski hill, just off State Route 273. This year the races will take place on Saturday & Sunday, January 26th & 27th. The races start at 9am on Saturday and Sunday and run until 12 Noon.

After the Race on Saturday, Hon-Dah Resort Casino hosts Winter-fest on their festival grounds, which includes a dog weight pull competition, a dog show, chili cook-off, ice sculpting, live entertainment and plenty of food and beverages including refreshing hot drinks. This year Hon-Dah Resort has enlisted former KUPD “Morning Mayor” and KMLE (Camel Country) radio personality Dave Pratt from Phoenix as the emcee for the Sled-Dog Races and Winter-fest events.

Sunday at 9am, the Sled-Dog Race Finals will resume up at Sunrise and before the awards ceremony, Mushers will host a kids race, where children 12-years and under will have the opportunity to ride a sled pulled by one of the dogs. Sunrise Park Resort, located 20 minutes from Hon-Dah, is one of, if not the largest ski hill in Arizona. There are 3 mountains, 65 trails and over 800 acres of ski/snow-board terrain. They start making snow early to insure a heavy base throughout the season. There are restaurants located throughout the ski area and the Sunrise Day-lodge Bar with drink specials and en-tertainment. Sunrise has a ski school with top notch instructors, daycare facilities and a sledding/tubing area. Sunrise Park hours are from 9am - 4pm daily. Night skiing takes place on Jan 19th, Feb 16th & 23rd from 4:30pm – 9:30pm.

After playing outdoors, head for Hon-Dah Resort Casino and warm up by the massive fireplace in the hotel lobby, grab a cup of hot chocolate at the snack bar, your favor-ite adult beverage from the lounge, or you may choose settle in for a relaxing dinner at the Indian Pine Restaurant. Stan: In what I call ‘niche films’, those themes for a specific age/life group and in this case seniors as Maggie Smith, who star’s in ‘Downton Abbey’ and one of my favorite television series, provides the story glue that holds together the lightly stitched presentation of senior life. Dustin Hoffman, in his directorial debut, provides an eclectic group of characters, many of whom remind me of the various personality types who live in my downtown senior high-rise complex for an enjoyable 90 minute reflective view of the seniors in my orbit, and life in my complex. (Grade: C+)

Randy: It seems as if 2012 was the year for movies about the youthfulness of our older generations. All of these films were charming in their own right. The British seem to value their seniors a bit more than we do, as evidenced by the numerous releases last year featuring many of the same cast members. While not nearly as moving or heartfelt as

its competitors, “Quartet” is an extremely likeable little film that should put a smile on the faces of audience members of all ages. Make sure to watch the end credits! (Grade: B+)

Joseph: “Quartet” - the latest movie that appears to be riding the newly formed wave of entertainment aiming to appeal exclusively to aging audiences - is so sweet and conflict free that it makes “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” look like an extremely complicated and complex motion picture. Granted, one does not want to upset the apple cart of viewers who venture out of their retirement homes on field trips to the picture show too much, but the new drama from director Dustin Hoffman - yes, that Dustin Hoffman in his inaugural effort behind the camera - is in desperate need of more weight. (Grade: F)

‘West of Memphis’

Filmmaker Amy Berg examines a catastrophic failure of justice in Arkansas, telling the story behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light. (R - 147 minutes)

Stan: This next installment on the high profile West Memphis, Arkansas murder case of the early 1990s by director Amy Berg provides an overview of the controversial handling of the investigation of the event as well as a view of the various court systems of the state of Arkansas. The slow and deliberate pacing of the two and a half hour film, provides the viewer with many ‘pregnant pause’ moments as the facts unfold, and the extent that the Arkansas ‘powers-that-be’ will go to save face in a system gone wrong. (Grade: B+)

Randy:”Having followed the story of the West Memphis Three for years now having viewed all of the ‘Paradise Lost’ documentaries, I was extremely interested in seeing the latest documentary with the most up to date information. ‘West of Memphis’ is by far the most well made of them all. The filmmakers take a complicated story and tell it with ease. With a running time nearing two and a half hours, there’s not a dull moment to be had. The story and film is so fascinating, you will be hard pressed not to spend hours afterwards doing even more research.” (Grade: A)

Joseph: One would think that Amy Berg, the director of “West of Memphis” - a remarkably well-researched documentary that essentially condemns the criminal system for taking too long to grant justice to the wrongly convicted - would have found a way to tell the story of the West Memphis Three in less than two-and-a-half hours. All irony aside, this motion picture packs a powerful punch - both intellectually and emotionally. Prepare to be disturbed. Prepare to be angry. Prepare to be inspired. The movie is as compelling as it comprehensive, drawing those who are familiar with the case as well as newcomers deep into the difficult ordeal. (Grade: B)

In “Warm Bodies,” which opens next weekend, Nicholas Hoult plays a zombie who becomes involved with the girlfriend (Teresa Palmer) of one of his victims (Dave Franco) and discovers that their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.

“Summit is the studio who made ‘Warm Bodies’, they had seen ‘The Wackness’ a while ago, and they liked it and wanted to work with me which was very flattering. But they were doing the

kinds of projects that weren’t very consistent with what I wanted to be doing so we were looking for projects for a while together, and then, they brought this book to me. Then, they brought this book to me. One of the executives asked me to read the book, just a couple of pages he said. I read it and said ‘wow man, this is cool’! You mentioned that it’s ‘Very clever’, I like that, can I use that [with a laugh!] I adapted the script for ‘Warm Bodies’ and we were off to the races with it.

“This is the biggest movie I’ve ever done, but still there were a lot of sacrifices we had to make. You see these post-apocalypticmovies whether its ‘I Am Legend’ or I went to the movies the other day and saw trailers for two, one’s a Will Smith movie, the other a Tom Cruise movie about the apocalypse and those movies cost upwards of 200 million dollars. We cost a fraction of that amount. We had 45 days to shoot ‘Warm Bodies’, and had to be very smart about how we turned Montreal

“This film has all of the things that are very familiar in the genre, and it also taps into the things that people feel when they’re young and trapped, and at the same time, it’s incredibly unique with aspects of horror, romance, and comedy. Its got something for everybody, and at the same time it has these two core characters that are so

In the early formative years of American cinema, two primary genres were mainstays of the themes presented, the popular gangster movies with grounded stories from the east and westerns, which explored life in the west.

‘Yellow Rock’ presents a story of five men who ride into the eerie town of Yellow Rock, hoping to rescue a family member and his lost boy. A Mountain Man (Michael Biehn) is hired to guide them into Indian Territory for the search.With permission from the tribe to enter their lands and a doctor who tends to the Indians, the group rides into the lands as an old Indian

legend of a curse comes true including haunted lands, wild animals, and eventually the mistrust of each other as the yellow fever of the greed for gold takes hold.

Capturing the look and the feel of the westerns of old, ‘Yellow Rock,’ is high on my ‘must see’ westerns list as it reminded me of one of my favorite westerns, writer/director Richard Brooks’ ‘The Professionals’ (1966) where the initial intent was a rescue, with ulterior motives coming into play.

Fun fact – cigars aren’t all that different from wine.

No, really.

“Just as one would sample several varietals of wine to determine their own personal palette pleasers, one should also ‘taste’ all the shapes, sizes and flavors of cigars for the same reason,” said Brad Berko, owner of Scottsdale Cigar Club, which is among the most beloved and most uniquely stocked retail cigar stores in Arizona, focusing on popular hand-rolled tobacco brands.

And, much like different foods pair perfectly with specific wines, cigars pair perfectly with many types of wine as well as several spirits.

Wines

As one would imagine, softer cigars are often beloved by white wine drinkers, while big red devotees prefer the more full-bodied brands. Cabernets, Merlots, Pinot Noirs and Pinot Grigios are the most-oft paired of all.

For true cigar lovers looking to get into wine, start with wines that include hints of tobacco and even cigar box flavors in their tasting notes

The history of how drinking whisky and smoking a cigar goes is older than the United States, itself.

At night, with its occasional horizons stretching beyond imagination, the desert calls us into the unknown. Breaking boundaries and stepping into the dark are part and parcel to Arizona terroir, leading to innovations within a fertile environment in which Yankee ingenuity thrives. Arizona winegrowing is a testament to the true American Spirit, a reflection of the primal spark.

Ok. Enough poetic waxing. You get the idea. Arizona is a seriously amazing place to be at this time. Much as I gaze at the computer screen, contemplating what words to plant and giving in to the occasional creative flurry, Arizona winegrowers have a seemingly blank slate to begin with. However, we now know some things: Zinfandel is not a fan of our

monsoons, planting adjacent to a river can be more problematic than helpful, and any nook or corner of each winegrowing valley can be as temperamental as a Brown Recluse.

Modern winemaking in Arizona is in its infancy, and you have the ability to help raise it during its first steps. Here are some things you can do from Phoenix to support:

• Request that your favorite local restaurant consider representing at least one Arizona wine in its portfolio.

• Spread the word to out-of-staters with gifts of locally-grown, locally-produced wines.

• Take an online viticulture course from Yavapai College.

When we support local businesses and industry, more money stays closer to home, helping everyone grow and prosper.

A new year begins and thoughts turn to beer. Fair enough, our thoughts always turn to beer, but that isn’t the point. The point is that with each new near comes the promise of new beers to try. The question always asked is what new breweries are coming to Arizona this year. Well, we don’t have a crystal ball, but we do know what some of the best beers that we can’t get in Arizona are. If you want them, you will need to do some creative shopping either over the internet or through friends that live elsewhere (and check out the legalities of ship-ping beer first), but the right beer may just be worth the trouble. So here

are some of the most requested beers that we don’t get in Arizona.

One of the most requested beers is Yuengling. This Pottsville, Pennsyl-vania brewery bills itself as America’s Oldest Brewery, and given its continu-ous operation since 1829, they seem to be correct. Their flagship beer is Yuengling Traditional Lager which has a subtle malt sweetness with a hint of hops. It is so well known in the Philadelphia area, most people simply order a lager and receive it. While not a craft brewery (it is one of the largest breweries in the country), craft en-thusiasts do enjoy their beers, and for

many area natives who have moved away, it is the first beer they look for upon a return visit. They also can be credited for the first bottled Black and Tan in 1986.

The other beers that we don’t cur-rently get here are definitely in the craft category. Russian River is at the top of that list. Located in Santa Rosa, California, this brewery runs parallel paths, producing some incredible IPAs as well as some of the best Belgian style beers around. Pliny the Elder, named for the 1st Century Roman author and Philosopher, is considered to be the first Double IPA

and is recognized as one of the best. The Belgian series, many of them barrel aged and at least partially fermented with the wild yeast Brett-anomyces, consists of Damnation, Supplication, Temptation and a vari-ety of others with the same naming pattern. Brewmaster Vinnie Cirluzo even got around to brewing the long awaited Procrastination to the shock of Russian River regulars.

Many East Coast craft beers don’t make it to Arizona due to the distance and expenses involved in ship-ping. Two that Arizonans have been patiently waiting for are Brooklyn Brewing and Victory. Brooklyn Brew-

ing, located appropriately enough in Brooklyn, is known for making un-commonly good food beers and brew-master Garrett Oliver is considered by most to be the foremost authority on food and beer pairing in the country. His beer dinners are legendary and accomplished chefs defer to his exper-tise when planning menus for these events. Lately the series of big bottle beers including Local One and Local Two, as well as Black Ops, have been exciting our fellow beer drinkers in the east. Victory Brewing is located in Downingtown, PA and produces one of the best American made Pilsners

in the Prima Pils, they also make Hop Devil IPA as well as the very danger-ous Golden Monkey Belgian Triple. At 8% alcohol by volume and incredibly smooth, Golden Monkey can sneak up on you.

New Glarus Brewing in Wisconsin produces some very sought after beers. Their line at the Great Ameri-can Beer Festival is always one of the longest. Despite being distributed exclusively in their home state, they are still one of the twenty largest craft breweries in the country. Spotted Cow, a farmhouse style ale, Wisconsin Belgian Red, Raspberry Tart and their Unplugged series are particularly large selling products for them. No craft beer lover can go to Wisconsin without bringing back some New Glarus.

Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s chat about our favorite beer friend back for his yearly visit to Arizona. Bell’s HOPSLAM! For those who are unaware, Hopslam is the double IPA creation from Bell’s Brewing in Kalamazoo and Comstock Michigan that sets our hearts and minds alight with its decadent flavours, elevated alcohol content and limited availability.

Beginning with six different hop varietals added to the brew and finishing with a huge dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops (my favorite!), Hopslam contains the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s repertoire. Chosen specifically for their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute an amazing blend of grapefruit, bitterness and floral notes. A huge malt bill and a solid dose of honey provide enough body to keep the balance in order, resulting in a remarkably smooth and easy drinking rendition of the American Double India Pale Ale style.

It’s big, it’s beautiful and well worth the wait but Bell’s Brewery gives this brew a six month shelf life so first things first, do as the lads in Kalamazoo say and consume it as fresh as possible. It pours a hazy golden blonde colour and comes in at a whopping 10% ABV. so drink and enjoy slowly once the bottle is open.

A beer almost tailor made for food, count on Hopslam to pair well with everything from hot wings and blue cheese sauce to pepper crusted filet mignon with mash and blackened swordfish. Even as a dessert beer this big brew shines. I imagine a warm peach cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream would fit perfectly. The possibilities are almost endless!

Look for Hopslam at better craft beer retailers all over the valley, but do it quickly as our best beer friend only hangs around for a short time! Until next week, cheers!

They make an outstanding collection of core beers including one of the best porters out there, Bully Porter and their Single Wide IPA, both of which are amazing. They also produce a series of special beers under the moniker, Smokestack Series, which includes the Double Wide Double IPA, Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale and the Hans Christian Andersen inspired The Sixth Glass, a Belgian style Quad with great flavor and a great following. There is also a seasonal series of Smokestack beers, along with some special releases which frequently play around with Brettanomyces, a wild yeast.

This is just a small sampling of some of the great beers out there that we don’t see in Arizona yet. There is

Harpoon, Founders, Sweetwater, Cigar City, Captain Lawrence, South-ern Tier, Funkwerks and many more. Two things to remember…Arizona is one of the only states, not contiguous to Michigan that is able to drink Bell’s Beers, and we get Oberon year round where other states only get it in the summer; and New Belgium isn’t available in many states in the east, while we get everything from Fat Tire to the Lips of Faith Series. So it’s not all bad for Arizona. Enjoy the beers we have, seek out other great beers when you travel, and always keep an eye out for the next great beer to hit the shelves. And let’s try to guess which of these beers will announce distribution in Arizona in 2013.

Nto providing greater energy, water, and materials efficiencies, produces a lower-moisture-content spent grain than does the more traditional lautering process. This form of spent grain better lends itself to drying and for use as fuel for the brewery’s grain dryer and, ultimately, the new spent grain steam boiler system.

Over the latter months of 2012, Alaskan completed the final stage of the process with the installation and commissioning of the $1.8 million, custom-constructed spent grain steam boiler. This brewing byproduct is a unique and challenging fuel, so brewery engineers put their years of experience with drying grain to work with existing combustion technology to develop and fine-tune this first-of-its-kind process.

Alaskan expects that the new boiler will eliminate the brewery’s use of fuel oil in the grain drying process and displace more than half of the fuel needed to create process steam in the brewhouse. This translates to an estimated reduction in fuel oil use

in brewhouse operations by more than half. With moderate growth assumptions, Alaskan expects to save nearly 1.5 million gallons of oil over the next ten years.

Juneau brewery repurposes brewing by-product as fuel source

The Alaskan Brewing Company is now operating with a new fuel source: beer. More specifically, they are using the wet grain known as “spent grain,” left over from the brewing process, as the sole fuel source for their steam boiler. Alaskan is the first craft brewery in the world to use this brewing by-product in this way, reducing the company’s fuel oil consumption in brewhouse operations by 60-70 percent.

The brewery began the spent grain energy process in 1995 with the

installation of a grain dryer. The equipment dried the wet, protein-rich spent grain in preparation for shipment to the lower 48 for use as cattle feed, due to the absence of farms or ranches in Southeast Alaska. Alaskan designed the grain dryer to use up to 50 percent of the grain as a supplemental fuel source to heat the dryer itself. This reduced the oil required in the drying process, and provided experience in burning spent grain that would later prove useful in designing the steam boiler.

In 2008, Alaskan became the first craft brewery in the nation to install an energy saving piece of brewing equipment called a mash filter press. The mash filter press, in addition

“Who said healthy couldn’t be delicious?”

I love to day drink and eat, but I have become rather fond of reverse happy hour! It is becoming more and more popular for restaurants to add this, and I am glad that they are doing so. Pita jungle is never a bad call, but the reverse happy hour makes you go for an evening drink with a date rather than just some lunch. I went on a date there the other night, and one of the bartenders Cass was sassy and classy, and made you feel at home. The reverse happy hour is nightly from 9pm-close. Three dollar draft beers are not a bad deal; especially when I was ordering Full Sail I.P.A. The two dollar tapas are amazing! They are quite small, but you get a variety of items for ten dollars and you are solid! Olivia had another hallucination of Maxie with a dog-baby. Patrick and Emma saw Sabrina at Kelly’s, and Patrick explained that Sabrina would no longer be baby-sitting.
