Smart Report Forms
A smart report form automat ical ly adjusts i ts form at based on the data, ut i l iz ing decision logic in
propert ies in the r eport design and i ts enti t ies. Some examples:
Having a surface elevat ion label and data appear in t he report header for boreholes that havee levat ion data , and not f o r those wi t hout i t .
On a log, i f a sample has refusal , d isplaying t he refusal penet rat i on in inches aft er t he f inalb low count , separat ed from i t by a slash, as in 25-55/ 3" . I f no refusal , d isplaying the blow
counts and N-value.
Highl ighting data t hat is outside to ler ances wit h bold or colored font.
On a log, Including or omit t ing speci f ic colum ns depending on whet her data f or t hem ispresent, and enlarging the ot her columns to t ake up any vacant space.
Sett ing the dept h displayed per page based on a value in the borehole record, i f present, and
using defaul ts i f not .
This section w i l l dem onst rate how t he above smart report feat ures are implem ented, but t h is should be
considered only a sampl ing of t he possible smart r eport feat ures. Most enti t ies are configurable t o
appear or not (or t o move) depending on the resul t of a calculated expression. Also, most ent i t y
properties can hold expressions in place of explicit values, and these expressions can use specialized
functionsboth system and user-definedand programming logic to arrive at a result. This makes it
possible for gINT reports to be heavi ly manipulated at out put t ime by t he data they are report ing.
To f ind out addi t ional ways to configure smart report features, we recommend that you study the
reports provided in the training.glb l ibrary and cust om l ibrar i es that you can download from t he
Downloads page on the gINT websi te. We wi l l a lso use some smart r eport feat ures lat er in t he course
when we bu i ld t he test p i t log wi th photos, and implement legends.
Copying the FINAL SIMPLE LOG Report for Exercises
You may have creat ed t he SIMPLE LOG report duri ng t he Log Repor t Designmodule. In case you have
not created th is report, or there are errors or omissions, we l l replace i t wi th a f inal version from the

Conditional Visibility of Log Columns
One of t he most useful smart report feat ures is the abi l i t y t o make columns disappear on pages where
t hey contain no data, and adj ust t he surrounding columns t o take up t he avai lable space. A
sophist i cated exampl e of a report using th is feat ure is the GENERAL BH/ TP/ WELL report in your
l ibrary. I t w i l l suppress Recovery , Blow Count , Test / Remarks , USCS , Environment al , and Wel l columns in any combination, re locati ng the other columns and widening the Mat er ia l Descr ipt ion
co lumn to compensate . To v iew t h is repor t in act ion , do t he fo l lowing:
1. In OUTPUT, select a l l boreholes (clear the select ion from t he Borehole ID field) and choose
t he GENERAL BH/ TP/ WELL report in t he obj ect select or.
2. Preview t he report , and look at each page in sequence (select i ng each page in t he object
select or) . Noti ce that only B-1 and B-2 have wel l columns, CPT-1 lacks recovery and blow
count colum ns, and TP-1 has only four colum ns of t he eleven in the r eport design.
We wi l l create a m uch simpl er smart l og: a modif ied version of SIMPLE LOG in w hich we w i l l
implement condi t ional d isplay of the two Sample columns, and enlargement and movement of the
Li thology columns when Sample dat a is not pr esent. However, t he pr incip les are t he same, andaft erw ards you should be capabl e of analyzing how t he design of GENERAL BH/ TP/ WELL wor ks.
The design approach typical ly w i l l incl ude the use of t he fo l low ing elements:

Variable Depth Scales on Logs
Th e dept h scaleof a log report i s t he way you speci fy how many page units(vert ical inches or mm

REPORT DESIGN or OUTPUT (or leaving t h is b lank). However, users oft en want m ore control of t he
dept h scale, such as varying i t bet ween proj ects and/ or boreholes, calculat ing i t based on the t otal
depth of the borehole, and so on. We wi l l demonstrate the defaul t behavior f i rst, then explain var ious
ways t o cust omize i t .
Default Depth Scale Behavior
In LOG REPORT PROPERTIES, t here is a property cal led Depth Uni ts Page 1 tha t i n te rac ts w i th t he
Dept h Uni ts Page 1 f ie ld on the OUTPUT t ab. You can set a numeric value in the report propert y, and
t his speci f ies the dept h scale for a l l boreholes, r egardless of t heir dept hs. For example, i f you set a
Dept h Uni ts Page 1 value of 30, the depth scale on the f i rst page of the pr inted report wi l l range from
0 to 30 feet , t he second page ( i f needed) from 30 to 60 feet , and so on. The value is overr ideable at
output t ime, using the f ie ld in t he OUTPUT t ab, but a lways speci f ies a f ixed dept h scale.

Customized Depth Scale Behavior with a Calculated Expression
The Fixed Depth Scale and Best Fit behaviors may be adequate for your needs. However, you may find
t hese approaches t oo l imi t ing, especial ly i f your borehole dept hs range widely. Fixed Dept h Scale wi l l
potent ia l ly spread your deepest boreholes over mult ip le pages whi le using a fract i on of a page for a

One remedy is to m ake use of a calculated expr ession in t he Dept h Uni ts Page 1 repor t p roper ty . The
expression can ut i l i ze the hole dept h of each borehole (which i s avai lable f rom a syst em var iable), and

Specifying Depth Scale on a Per-Project or Per Borehole Basis
By creating appropr iate database f ie lds in conj unction wi t h the Dept h Units Page 1 property, you can
set t h ings up for a dat a entry person to speci fy a def aul t dept h scale value for each project , t hen
overr ide t h is value where desired for part icular boreholes. Once the dat abase f ie l ds and report

Using Depth Scales other than Depth-Per-Page
The speci f icat ion of dept h scale values on a per-proj ect basis wi t h a per-borehole overr ide does not
have to be rest r ict ed to a depth-per-page in feet . Two ot her possibi l i t ies are the f o l lowing:
Enter ing a depth-uni t s-per-page-uni t defaul t . This is for users who want a physical lymeasurable scale on their report s, such as X feet per inch, but want t o vary the scale by
borehole.
Enter ing a numeric r at io such as 100:1, a lso wi t h a per-borehole overr ide. This opti on is oft enpref erred in r egions using met r ic uni t s.
The impl ement ation of t hese scenar ios is descr ibed in t he f o l lowing subsections.
Using Depth Units per Page Unit (Feet per Inch)
Perhaps you want to be able to set a scale that is physically measurable on the page, such as 10 feet
per inch, bu t w ant t he abi l i t y t o se t a d i f fe rent sca le f rom t he defaul t fo r especial ly shal low or deep
holes.
Setting this up is similar to using Depth Log Page f ie lds, but uses a di f ferent f ie ld name and di f ferent
calculations. Again a field wil l be created the PROJECT and POINT tables, this time named Log Scale.
You wi l l set t he Dept h Unit s Page 1 value to a calculat ion that der ives the log depth from one of the
Log Scale values and the height of t he report page (speci f ied in t he Page 1 Body Height f ie ld in Report

Symbol Legend Positions
The Var iable Legend ent i t y in logs, f ences, and graphic text documents, by defaul t , pr int s t he symbols
in t he order tha t they w ere encountered in t he output . You can over r ide th is defau l t behavior fo r
sampler, mat er ia l , wel l and/ or general symbols using the Symbol Legend Posi t ions feat ure in SYMBOL
DESIGN, w hich enabl es you t o assign rankings to symbols for display in legends.
For example, you might w ant t o order mat er ia l symbols to show gravel symbols f i rst, fo l l owed by sand,
si l t , c lay, r ock, and al l others. To do t h is you w ould assign an integer t o al l gravels you use, a higher
int eger f or a l l sands, and so on. You can skip values. I t is only the r elat ive values that are import ant,
t hat is, 5 wi l l sort before 8 and i t doesn't mat t er t hat t here are no 6 or 7 values. Also, you can have
mult ip le symbols wi t h t he same legend posi t ion values, and symbols wi t h unspeci f i ed values are placed
at t he end o f the l i s t .
We l l assign the f o l lowing values to m ater i a l symbols used in our proj ect:
Code Descript ion Legend Posit ion
