    ADVANCED LOG REPORT DESIGN

    Using this Tutorial

This t ut or ia l is designed for i nter mediat e-to-advanced level gINT users, and is intended f or sel f -st udy.

It covers t he opt ions for creating var ious kinds of Smart Report feat ures, such as report columns that

disappear when they have no dat a, w i t h other colum ns enlarging t o take up t he space. Anot her t opic

explored in t h is t ut or ia l covers var ious ways t o cust omize dept h scales on a report-by-report , pr oj ect-

    by-proj ect or borehole-by-borehole basis. Final ly, a complex log report w i t h st andard column ent i t ies

on the f i rst page fo l low ed by phot os fr om t he database is created, demonst rat ing Bi t map Fi le type

You should be fami l iar wi th l og report design before w orking through th is tut or ia l . We recomm end you

    work t h rough the Log Repor t Design t utor i a l or t ake the gINT Universi t y class gINT 004 - Log Report

    Setting up Sample Files

Before start ing the tutor ia l , you need the fo l lowing:

gINT Version 8 installed on your computer

Sample f i les inst al led in t he appropr iate subfolders of t he \gINT\ instal lat ion fo lder (usual lyC:\Program Files\gINT\)

To obtain and inst al l t he sample f i les, do t he fo l low ing:

    1. Go t o ww w. g intso f tw are .com/ suppor t _doc.h tm l .

    2. Click on the l ink Data Files for Advanced Log Report Design (006) Tutorial only.

    3. Extract the fo l lowing f i les to the indicated locations:

    ADVANCED LOG REPORT DESIGN

    Smart Report Forms

A smart report form automat ical ly adjusts i ts form at based on the data, ut i l iz ing decision logic in

propert ies in the r eport design and i ts enti t ies. Some examples:

Having a surface elevat ion label and data appear in t he report header for boreholes that havee levat ion data , and not f o r those wi t hout i t .

    On a log, i f a sample has refusal , d isplaying t he refusal penet rat i on in inches aft er t he f inalb low count , separat ed from i t by a slash, as in 25-55/ 3" . I f no refusal , d isplaying the blow

    counts and N-value.

Highl ighting data t hat is outside to ler ances wit h bold or colored font.

On a log, Including or omit t ing speci f ic colum ns depending on whet her data f or t hem ispresent, and enlarging the ot her columns to t ake up any vacant space.

Sett ing the dept h displayed per page based on a value in the borehole record, i f present, and

    using defaul ts i f not .

This section w i l l dem onst rate how t he above smart report feat ures are implem ented, but t h is should be

considered only a sampl ing of t he possible smart r eport feat ures. Most enti t ies are configurable t o

appear or not (or t o move) depending on the resul t of a calculated expression. Also, most ent i t y

properties can hold expressions in place of explicit values, and these expressions can use specialized

functionsboth system and user-definedand programming logic to arrive at a result. This makes it

possible for gINT reports to be heavi ly manipulated at out put t ime by t he data they are report ing.

To f ind out addi t ional ways to configure smart report features, we recommend that you study the

reports provided in the training.glb l ibrary and cust om l ibrar i es that you can download from t he

Downloads page on the gINT websi te. We wi l l a lso use some smart r eport feat ures lat er in t he course

when we bu i ld t he test p i t log wi th photos, and implement legends.

Copying the FINAL SIMPLE LOG Report for Exercises

You may have creat ed t he SIMPLE LOG report duri ng t he Log Repor t Designmodule. In case you have

not created th is report, or there are errors or omissions, we l l replace i t wi th a f inal version from the

l ibrary. Do the fo l lowing:

    1. Go t o REPORT DESIGNXLogs.

    2. Select FINAL SIMPLE LOG in t he obj ect select or.

    3. Select File Copy Page.

    4. In Page Name t o Copy To, ent er SIMPLE LOG, and cli ck OK. This creat es a copy of FINALSIMPLE LOG, and c all s it SIMPLE LOG (repl acing t he ex ist ing SIMPLE LOG, if pr esent ).

    Variable Depth Scales on Logs

Th e dept h scaleof a log report i s t he way you speci fy how many page units(vert ical inches or mm

REPORT DESIGN or OUTPUT (or leaving t h is b lank). However, users oft en want m ore control of t he

dept h scale, such as varying i t bet ween proj ects and/ or boreholes, calculat ing i t based on the t otal

depth of the borehole, and so on. We wi l l demonstrate the defaul t behavior f i rst, then explain var ious

    ways t o cust omize i t .

    Default Depth Scale Behavior

In LOG REPORT PROPERTIES, t here is a property cal led Depth Uni ts Page 1 tha t i n te rac ts w i th t he

Dept h Uni ts Page 1 f ie ld on the OUTPUT t ab. You can set a numeric value in the report propert y, and

t his speci f ies the dept h scale for a l l boreholes, r egardless of t heir dept hs. For example, i f you set a

Dept h Uni ts Page 1 value of 30, the depth scale on the f i rst page of the pr inted report wi l l range from

0 to 30 feet , t he second page ( i f needed) from 30 to 60 feet , and so on. The value is overr ideable at

    Al ternat ely you can set t he Dept h Units Page 1 repor t p roper ty t o b lank, w h ich calcu la tes a best f i t fo r

When a best - f i t page dept h is calculat ed, t h is is comput ed as t he hole dept h plus 10%, rounded

Customized Depth Scale Behavior with a Calculated Expression

One remedy is to m ake use of a calculated expr ession in t he Dept h Uni ts Page 1 repor t p roper ty . The

expression can ut i l i ze the hole dept h of each borehole (which i s avai lable f rom a syst em var iable), and
