Wandering Pals News…..

On June 6th we travelled to Toronto to enjoy the absolutely fabulous “Come From Away”. The production was excellent, the music catchy and the story line enthralling. In my opinion it rivals Phantom in pure entertainment value. We also enjoyed a meal at Turtle Jack’s in Vaughan.

On July 4th we will be travelling to King’s Wharf Theatre to see Out of Order, an entertaining British comedy. Afterwards we will be going to Brooklea Golf and Country Club for a wonderful buffet dinner.

Coming in August, we will travel to Collingwood for a Sunset Cruise. Dinner will be enjoyed before the cruise. This should be an excellent event and is the first time we will have taken this cruise from Collingwood.

Look forward to Juke Box Heroes at the Walter’s Family Theatre in September and Octoberfest as well as a fall cruise to the cranberry bogs in October. Watch for dates and times of ticket sales.

For more information about these or any trips you would like to see, contact Susan Ball at 705-627-9959.

PLEASE REMEMBER…Scan Your Membership Please scan your membership card every time you attend a program or volunteer at the centre. This helps us to keep track of our attendance numbers which helps in obtaining funding for our centres. Out of the centre program convenors please record names of people attending with their phone numbers and we can enter it in our scan stations later. Milk Bag Collection helps us give back! If you have ever wondered what we do with the bags we collect…let us tell you! All the milk bags we collect are hand woven into sleeping mats that are sent to Haiti. Please don’t cut them into strips. If you have any at home, please bring them in to the Parkview 55+ Centre! It would be much appreciated if people could fold the bags, but if not, please keep them coming anyway. Thanks to everyone who helps us help others. RecACCESS The City of Barrie provides a wide range of recreation and physical activity programs. While subsidized by tax revenues from the citizens of Barrie, these programs often include a registration fee to offset program costs. RecACCESS is intended to ensure all residents have an opportunity to participate in recreation programs and activities, regardless of their financial situation. RecACCESS is a fee assistance program that provides support to low-income families and individuals in Barrie, by providing qualifying participants with credits which can be applied to the registration fee for qualifying programs and activities. Application is required; all applicants must be permanent full-time residents of Barrie. For more information or application forms, visit barrie.ca or speak with any client services staff.

Entertainment Afternoon at Allandale a big success

On Sunday June 10th this special day began with music from the Skyliners Youth Band, who played

tunes from the 1920’s onward. The director of this talented group was Mr Daryl Yaeger. We then

enjoyed a variety of homemade pies, tea and coffee. The second part of the show featured two of

our own members, George Mason and Susan Ball. All proceeds from this event were donated to the

local “Seniors Wish Foundation” Thanks to Kim Imrie for accepting a cheque in the amount of

$400.00 on behalf of the Allandale 55+ center. A big thank you to all the “pie makers”, volunteers,

planning committee, staff support and those of you who purchased tickets to attend.

TRIP TO LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA May 22- 25, 2018

Unfortunately this trip started off from Barrie in the rain and as we entered the U.S. it got mistier and wetter so we were unable to see the beautiful countryside we were passing through however it did not

deter the passengers on board from having some fun and laughter.

When we arrived in Lancaster our first evening was at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre for a buffet dinner and to watch their production of “Grease”. This show was most enjoyable and took us back to

the 1970’s with their leather jackets and poodle skirts.

Wednesday morning after an excellent breakfast we boarded the coach to visit Lititz where we met Sister Dorothy who gave us the history of the Moravian Congregation. After lunch we visited Sturgis Pretzel Bakery and tried our hand at “twisting” our own pretzels where some were much better than

others. Then it was on to the Wilbur Chocolate Factory.

Our supper on Wednesday was at the Plain & Fancy restaurant which was a little disappointing however when we found out that we were in the town of “Intercourse” the T-shirts and ball caps were

very popular.

Thursday was the day we had been looking forward to as we had a guided tour of Lancaster followed after lunch by a performance of “Jesus” at the Sight & Sound Theatre. This was an absolutely amazing

theatre that seated 2000 and every seat was sold. The actors were on a stage with many different animals who were all so well trained and knew exactly what to do and when. I was most impressed

with the two camels who walked down the carpeted aisle to the stage without a hitch.

To follow this superb show we drove to an Amish farm for our supper and met Levi, his wife Priscilla and their four gorgeous daughters who waited on us and even sang a couple of songs for us.

Needless to say Friday was the day we had to come home however the weather was much kinder to us so we were able to say goodbye for now to Lancaster and bring home some sunshine too.

COPE Service Dog – New Senior Reading Buddy Program

COPE Service Dogs is launching a new Senior Reading Buddy Program in the Barrie and Innisfil Area. We are looking for fun, committed volunteers, over the age of 55, that have a dog and would

environment and the opportunity to their self-confidence and academic skills. You will be contributing to develop a positive senior-youth community relationship with the help of your

dog! Please contact Vanessa at [email protected] or 705-734-2673 ext. 226.

Vanessa and her friends will be joining us for our July 11th BBQ to speak with us about her new program as well as give you the opportunity to visits with her and learn more as well as ask any

questions.

BENEFITS OF DECLUTTERING

Most of the time people have too many things for the space they occupy. Removing clutter truly give you the feeling of space and freedom.

Our physical clutter has a much greater impact on our mental clutter than we realize. Clearing away the physical clutter can help reduce stress, clear your mind and make your home more

peaceful and efficient.

People tend to hold onto things to remind us of people and events in our lives. We feel that if we get rid of them we would offend someone or forget about them. You need to decide if you are just

storing it just to pass on to the next generation to deal with

If you have trouble letting go of something, e.g. trophies, medals, plaques, grandma’s china, grandpa’s tools, a simple solution to preserving them is to take photos and keep them in an album

or in the “Cloud” on your computer.

Once you make the start on decluttering you will get a new found energy.

Allandale Walking Club Tuesdays 9am

Plan to come out and get some fresh air and exercise with the Tuesday morning walking club. This program runs from June-October depending on weather. If this is something you are

interested in joining, please sign up and pick up a schedule for the meeting spots each week.

For more details, speak to Dee Durdin or Betty Reid.
