Paul Marshall Functional English, maths and ICT

What has the ALSS done for you? The Adult Learning and Skills Service have done a lot for me. My English was very poor at the start of my courses, in fact quite embarrassing but now I have a much better understanding. I am much better at writing letters, writing layouts and filling forms in. These are things I used to struggle with.

What have you enjoyed from your learning experience? I have really enjoyed being around my course friends and it’s made me realise that there are lots of people out there who struggle with maths and English. The Adult Learning and Skills Service is the perfect environment to learn in, but if you want to know the truth passing exams is a great thing but most of all I have enjoyed the kind, extremely helpful and caring help I have received from the whole team.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about enrolling? The support I have received throughout my journey has made me realise that there is help out there. I say to anyone who wants to enrol onto an Adult Learning and Skills Service course, have no fear it is the perfect way to learn.

You all start at the same level and are in the same situation. The Adult Learning team will put you at ease and make you feel comfortable.

Margaret McCann AAT Bookkeeping course, maths and English

What has the ALSS done for you? I have chronic Diabetes and I really struggled with my accounting course in the first few months. The Adult Learning Team were very understanding and supportive of my personal circumstances. I successfully managed to improve and control my diabetes through a new love of swimming and have since completed two sponsored charity swims raising over £950. I was then able to complete my English, maths and accounting course.

This year the local library have asked me to be an Ambassador for their summer reading challenge which promotes children from 4 years to 11 years to read a total of 6 books throughout the summer holidays. I will be visiting schools to promote the benefits of reading ahead of the summer challenge.

I am absolutely thrilled to have been given this opportunity and I would not have been able to do this if it wasn’t for my Adult Learning experience. Not only did I meet lovely tutors and friends but I feel I have progressed enormously in all aspects of my mental and physical health, and in terms of my social skills.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about enrolling? I would recommend for everyone to enrol onto an Adult Learning course, as it is not only a great confidence booster but overall a fabulous learning experience!

ApprenticeshipsWhat is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a work-based training programme, which combines on and off the job learning and development. Apprenticeships are partly funded by the Government and are designed to be used to up-skill existing employees and to deliver a pool of enthusiastic candidates with the right skills and attitude into an organisation or sector.

An apprenticeship is designed to develop the employee’s level of competency and confidence within their current role by developing their practical skills and knowledge. As a result, the employee will gain nationally recognised qualifications in the form of a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Certificate or Diploma, and functional skills (English, maths and ICT). In return the employer is able to benefit from improved overall efficiency, productivity and competitiveness within their market sector.

What do our apprenticeships include? An apprenticeship with the Adult Learning and Skills Service typically covers the following components (these may vary according to the subject area):

Certificate or Diploma

This covers the practical skills where the apprentice demonstrates that they have the skills and knowledge to meet the required national standard. This includes developing an individual training plan to cover the core skills required for the job.

Technical Certificate

This relates to the knowledge based element of an apprenticeship and is typically assessed by a series of online tests, written assignments or practical assignments.

Functional skills

English, maths and ICT

Employment rights and responsibilities.

Are you eligible for apprenticeship funding? • You must not be currently studying

Have the opportunities offered by your apprenticeship had an impact on aspects of your life beyond work? My apprenticeship has enabled me to apply for a more senior full time position as a data and examinations officer. This has massively increased my self-confidence, both in my working environment and in my personal life. I have had the pleasure of working with a fantastic team of people who have all played a role in my progress. I look forward to developing and progressing within my new role.

I have since progressed onto a Band 6 full time business administration role and I am looking forward to advancing my career further within the Adult Learning team. As a result of my apprenticeship I have felt more confident to take on new challenges both in my work life and personal life. I have communicated with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds with different requirements from the service which has massively increased my self-confidence.

Claire BramleyCurrently employed as a Business Support Administrator at North Yorkshire County Council

My apprenticeship has helped me get to where I am now, as it has given me the confidence to go with what I think is right, to complete tasks to my best ability and to secure a full time position in a department which is always evolving.

I completed my apprenticeship in around 10 months and have been in a full time, fully paid position with North Yorkshire County Council since June 2016.

Remember – more detailed course information is available online at www.northyorks.gov.uk/adultlearning

Further information about our courses and servicesCosts of our courses All of our courses are individually priced to take account of a number of factors including course hours, the numbers that can attend or the need to use specialist facilities or venues. For many of the courses you will see four prices.

Price 1 – Course Fee

Price 2 – Reduced Fee

Price 3 – Materials fee if applicable

Price 4 – Exam fee if applicable

Please note that you will be required to produce evidence that you are entitled to a reduced fee within one week of signing up for the course. If you fail to do this we may cancel your place on the course.

Can I spread the cost of the course fee?Our easy payment method to help you spread the cost are available on all courses over £100. This is done via direct debit and is generally four payments spread over four months. On occasion we are able to set up payment schedules over a longer period of time but this cannot extend beyond the end date of a course.

Please note: Once a direct debit is set up you must not cancel it unless you have been in contact with us first and we have confirmed that it is alright to do so. If you cancel without our permission you will immediately be invoiced for the full amount. It is important to understand that direct debit is not a method of paying for part of the course, just a way of spreading the full cost of the course over a number of months.

Can I get any help with the cost of the course? We understand that for some people the cost of an adult learning class can be a barrier to

attendance. In some circumstances we might be able to help with assistance towards the cost of the course, travel to the course, books, materials and childcare. You should note that this support is limited and is not available on all courses. Please contact our Customer Service Centre on 01609 780780 and ask for ‘adult learning’ to find out if you might be eligible for support.

Advanced Learner LoansAdvanced Learner Loans are available for most learners aged 19 and over, studying at level 3 to level 6. The application process is made easy as household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit checks.

How to apply 1 One of our local offices will issue you with a

‘Learning and funding information’ letter – you will need this to complete your application. This letter contains the details about your course.

2 You will need to register before you can apply online www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan/how-to-apply (you can apply by post if you can’t apply online).

3 You will receive a letter confirming your loan – usually within two weeks if you apply online (postal applications take longer).

Please contact our Customer Service Centre for details of our level 3-6 courses and to book an appointment with a Learning and Skills Adviser.

Examination feesAll exam and registration fees are included in the exam fee price. However, if you complete a course and then are unsuccessful in the final exam we may ask you to pay an additional fee to re-sit the exam.

RefundsA full refund will be given under the following circumstances:

• The course time or dates change following you signing up and it is no longer convenient for you to attend.

• The course closes because there are insufficient numbers on the course.

• You signed up over the phone or via our online booking system and change your mind within 14 days of the booking.

Please note this does not apply if the course starts within the 14 day period or if the course has already started when you book. In all other circumstances we only offer a refund in exceptional circumstances. Once a course has started we cannot offer any refunds. This is because the course fee contributes to funding that makes the course viable. All refunds offered in exceptional circumstances will be subject to a £15 administration fee.
