Neve Shalom and Temple Emanu-El will be sharing many of our Adult Education courses this year with classes taught at various locations. Neve Shalom members should pay our synagogue; Temple Emanu-El members will pay their Temple (both synagogues will be charging the same fees) and students, at no additional charge, can take any or all classes that the two shuls will be offering. We encourage you to register early so we can guarantee that each class will have sufficient attendance to meet. Walking with Mitzvot with Rabbi Eric Rosin Sundays 10am at Neve Shalom

Fall Semester: Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28,Nov 4, 18, Dec. 2, 9, 16 Spring Semester: Jan. 13, 20, 27, Feb. 10, 17, 24, Mar. 3, 10, 17, Apr. 7 & 14 Rabbi Rosin will offer classes based on the Walking with Mitzvot curricula to examine the centrality and complexity of mitzvot - God’s Commandments - in our practice of Judaism. We will study the history of mitzvot, their centrality in our tradition, and how they shape and deepen the spirituality of our lives. The Walking with Mitzvot curriculum was prepared by the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies.

Musical Lunches with Hazzan Sheldon Levin Fall Semester: Thursdays at noon: Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, Nov. 1, 8 at Neve Shalom Bring your own cold dairy lunch and learn about Jews in classical and popular Music. From opera to broadway, classics to pop, we will listen to, perform, and discuss Jewish roots in famous songs and productions.

How Jews Choose with Hazzan Sheldon Levin and Rabbi Victor Appel Fall Semester: Sundays at 11:15am:

Using issues brought to the leadership of the Reform Movement and the Conserva-tive Committee on Law and Standards, we will discuss how these two major denominations make decisions. Issues including acceptance of gay clergy, use of musical instruments on Shabbat, end of life questions and other pressing issues will be discussed.

Introduction to Torah Trop with Cantor Sharon Kohn Fall Semester: Tuesdays at 7 pm Oct. 9, 16, 23, 30, Nov. 6, 13 at Temple Emanu-El The new cantor at Temple Emanu-El will teach beginners the basic skills of learning to chant Torah. They will use the same melodies that are traditionally chanted both at Temple Emanu-El and at Neve Shalom. Ability to read Hebrew is needed.

Twelve Tremendous Texts with Rabbi David Vaisberg Course taught in memory of Rabbi Dr. Aaron D. Panken, z”l Fall Semester: Wednesdays at 12:30 pm Oct. 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7, 14, Dec. 5, 12, 19, Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6 in the Temple Emanu-El Mo’adon We will dive into twelve of Rabbi Panken’s favorite Talmudic texts— texts that deal with key issues confronting Reform Judaism today, including topics such as pluralism, disagreement, revelation, and balances of power. Rabbi Dr. Aaron D. Panken was a scholar, teacher, visionary, philanthropist, and mensch in the Reform movement, most recently serving as President of the Hebrew Union College— Jewish Institute of Religion. This past May, tragically, his life was cut short in a plane crash. His students across the globe are honoring his memory by sharing his teachings in their communities. No background in Talmud is necessary, and this course will be taught using English translations.

Talmud in English with Stephan Gross Fall Semester: Wednesdays at 7:30 pm meeting every other week beginning Oct. 10

at 340 Grove Avenue, Metuchen Topics from the Talmud in English. No background is necessary. This year we will generally focus on the status of women in Jewish Law.

Improving Hebrew Reading with Bruce Greenberg Fall Semester: Mondays at 7 pm Oct. 8, 15, 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26

at Neve Shalom This class is geared for those who know the Hebrew letters and vowels and would like to read Hebrew more quickly so they can join with the congregation in reciting prayers at services.

History and Politics of the Arab-Israeli Conflict with Rabbi Vaisberg Spring Semester: Wednesdays at 12:30 pm Feb. 13, 20, 27, Mar. 6, 13, 27, Apr. 3, 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, June 5, 12, 19, 26

at Temple Emanu-El Mo’adon In our introductory survey to the conflict, using documents, speeches, and archived sources, we’ll examine the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, starting at its roots before the establishment of the State of Israel and concluding in current times. All questions are welcome. Bring your lunch if you’d like. Recordings of classes will be available via the podcast, Torah with TEEE.

Beyond the Headlines: The Global Refugee Crisis Through a Jewish Lens with Rabbi Rachel Grant Meyer (sponsored by the Gesher Committee)

Saturday Sept 22 at lunch after the 9:30am service at Neve Shalom

Over the past year, the number of refugees and displaced people across the world has grown to more than 68 million - more than at any time in history. Because of our own Jewish history and values, the Jewish people have a unique connection to these most vulnerable people. In this session, we'll ground ourselves in a shared understanding of the current crisis and its connections to Jewish history, as well as explore Jewish text connected to the value of welcoming the stranger. We will also talk about next steps in connection with the world's refugees and asylum seekers.

Global Day of Learning (for all ages) Sunday Nov. 11 9:45am-1pm

at Neve Shalom This community-wide day of study is part of the world-wide program designed by Adin Steinsaltz. Rabbi Eric Rosin, Hazzan Sheldon Levin, Martha Mack, Esther Fendrick, Rabbis Vaisberg, Appel, Reed and other area educa-tors will be teaching this year’s theme: Extraordinary Passages: Texts and Travels.

ROSENWALD Film Screening Saturday Jan. 19 7 pm at Neve Shalom Free Admission Rosenwald, a documentary by Aviva Kempner, is about a Jewish Chicago businessman who rose to head Sears and later partnered with Booker T. Washington to build 5,400 schools in the South in African-American communities in the early 1900s.

Israel and Shirley Segal Memorial Lecture Sunday May 5 at 10 am at Neve Shalom Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, curator and founder of the Polin Museum in Warsaw, Poland will be this year’s speaker.

Susy Schwartz Memorial Concert Sunday, June 2 at 7pm at Neve Shalom The Susy Schwartz Concert brings contemporary Jewish music to our community while raising funds for our "Passport to Israel" program and has featured such luminaries as Debbie Friedman, Craig Taubman, Neshama Carlebach, Josh Nelson, and Safam. The concert this year features comedian and cantor Kenny Ellis with comedy, songs and shtick.

Justice at Dachau Oct. 19 Joshua M. Greene is a filmmaker whose Holocaust documentaries have

aired on PBS, The Discovery and Disney Channels. His books on war

crimes trials and survivor testimony have been published in six

languages. He has taught Holocaust studies at Hofstra University.

Chaplaincy and the Military Nov. 16 Rabbi Melinda Zalma is a Chaplain (Lieutenant Commander) in

the Reserve Component of the U.S. Navy. She received her

rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary where

she also received her Masters in Midrash.

Women and the Garment Industry Dec. 14 Ethel Brooks is an Associate Professor in Women's/Gender Studies

and Sociology at Rutgers University. She is the co-editor of the

special issue of WSQ on "Activisms." WSQ is an interdisciplinary

forum for the exchange of emerging perspectives on women and

sexuality.

Heschel and King Jan. 11 Rabbi Gerald L. Zelizer came to Neve Shalom in 1970 and served

as our rabbi for 45 years. He writes for major publications and he

has written over 70 essays on matters of religion and American

society.

Israel, BDS, and Colleges Today Feb. 15 Rabbi Esther Reed is a Conservative rabbi and the Senior Associate

Director of Rutgers Hillel. She will discuss BDS issues and

responses on college campuses.

Mamaleh Knows Best May 17 Marjorie Ingall is a columnist for Tablet Magazine, the national

magazine award-winning journal of Jewish culture and ideas, and a

regular contributor to The New York Times Book Review. For

seven years she wrote the East Village Mamele column for The

Jewish Daily Forward.

Rabbi Gerald L. Zelizer SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE at Neve Shalom

Dr. Susannah Heschel Susannah Heschel is the Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies and the chair of the

Jewish Studies Department at Dartmouth College. Her scholarship focuses on

Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, the

history of biblical scholarship, and the history of anti-Semitism. Her numerous

publications include Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus, which won a National

Jewish Book Award, and The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in

Nazi Germany. She has also taught at Southern Methodist University and Case

Western Reserve University.
