ATTENDANCE REPORT: July 3, 2016

Recently I was wondering what it is about the college experience that makes students so receptive to new ideas.

Donald McGavran is a researcher in church growth movements. Three of the factors he identifiedthatcauseopennessareconsistentlypresent for college students:1. New Settlements. McGavran found that people are open to new ideas, including the gospel, in newly developed areas. College campuses aren’t exactly new settlements, but theschoolcalendarandtheinfluxoffreshmencreate a sense of newness each fall. 2. Returned Travelers. McGavran found that people are receptive after travel has exposed them to new cultures and ideas. Students may not be traveling out of the country, but moving to a new school does expose them to a new world.3. Freedom from Control. “Control inhibits responsiveness to the Christian gospel. Relaxing control encourages it. Most of the three billion who yield no allegiance to Jesus Christ live under rigid controls. When these disintegrate, people become free to consider the claims of Christ.”—Donald McGavranFor the first time in their lives, mostcollege

students are experiencing complete freedom. This freedom creates opportunities and a sense of openness.

I’m convinced that the college campus is a receptivemissionfield.

Thanks to my friend Neil Reynolds, campus minister at Arkansas Tech U., Russellville, AR.
