Scope and Intended Audience

Scope. This publication describes how to configure and operate EMC Avamar Data Transport 1.0.

Intended Audience. The information in this publication is primarily intended for persons responsible for monitoring and administering Avamar Data Transport systems across the enterprise. These persons should have strong working knowledge of Avamar administration.

Product informationFor current documentation, release notes, software updates, information about EMC products, licensing, and service, go to the EMC Powerlink website at powerlink.emc.com.

Avamar supportFor EMC support, product, and licensing information that may enable you to resolve a product issue before you contact EMC Customer Service, go to the Avamar support page:

1. Go to https://support.emc.com/products.

2. Type a product name in the Find a Product box.

3. Select the product from the list that appears.

4. Click the arrow button to the right of the Find a Product box.

5. (Optional) To add the product to the My Products list so that you do not need to search for it each time, click Add to my products in the top right corner of the product page.

The Avamar support page provides access to product documentation, advisories, and downloads, as well as how-to and troubleshooting information.

Knowledgebase

The Avamar Knowledgebase (KB) contains applicable solutions that you can search for either by KB solution number (for example, esgxxxxxx) or by keyword.

To search the Avamar KB:

1. Click the Search tab at the top of the Avamar support page.

2. Type either the KB solution number or keywords in the search box.

3. (Optional) Limit the search to specific products by typing a product name in the Scope by product box and then selecting the product from the list that appears.

4. Select Knowledgebase from the Scope by resource list.

5. (Optional) Specify advanced options by clicking Advanced options and specifying values in the available fields.

6. Click the search button.

Live chat

If none of these resources resolve the issue, you can engage EMC Customer Service using live interactive chat by clicking Join Live Chat on the Service Center panel of the Avamar support page.

Service Requests

If more in-depth help is required, you can submit a Service Request (SR) by clicking Create Service Requests on the Service Center panel of the Avamar support page.

NOTE: To open an SR, you must have a valid supportagreement. Contact your EMC sales representative fordetails about obtaining a valid support agreement or withquestions about your account.

If you have an existing open SR, you can review the SR by clicking Expand on the Service Center panel and then clicking Manage Service Requests.

Facilitating support

EMC recommends that you enable ConnectEMC and Email Home on all Avamar systems to facilitate the best possible support. Systems with ConnectEMC configured and enabled can automatically generate SRs when appropriate and as noted in this guide.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

EMC® Avamar® Data Transport (ADT) is system of virtual machines that run in a VMware ESX or ESXi server environment in conjunction with tape backup software to transport de-duplicated Avamar data to tape.

A transport node functions as a target of replication from a primary Avamar server, which, after replication is complete, is moved to tape. Transport nodes can also be recovered from tape, allowing backed up data to be accessed by administrators or users. Transport nodes are sized at either 1TB or 2TB. (All transport nodes that are managed by an ADT control node must be the same size.)

Configurations. As transport nodes are used for both targets for replication and targets for recovery from tapes, it is strongly suggested that you configure at least two transport nodes in your systems. Avamar Data Transport 1.0 has been qualified with up to 10 transport nodes per control node; however, it is generally the capabilities of your hardware and network infrastructure that limit how many transport nodes you can efficiently deploy.

Important Terms and ConceptsThe definitions of the following terms and concepts deviate from the norm in that transport nodes, which have many of the capabilities of Avamar servers, are installed as virtual machines rather than specific rack-mountable hardware.

Avamar

Avamar Grid. See Avamar Server.

Avamar Server. The server component of the Avamar client/server system. An Avamar server is a fault tolerant, high-availability system, comprised of one or more nodes, used to store client backups. It also provides essential processes and services required for data restores, client access, and remote system administration. Sometimes also referred to as a “grid.”

Data Server. See GSAN.

Grid. See Avamar Server.

GSAN. Global Storage Area Network. The GSAN is a component of the Avamar server. It is sometimes referred to as the data server or the storage server.

Node. The primary building block in any Avamar system is a “node.” Each node is a self-contained network-addressable server that runs Avamar software on a virtual machine running the Linux operating system.

Retention Policies Backup retention policies allow you to specify how long to keep a particular backup in the Avamar system.

Single-Node Server. Single-node Avamar servers combine all the features and functions of Avamar software on a single node. Avamar Data Transport transport nodes are single node configurations of an extensively modified Avamar server.

Storage Server. See GSAN.

Avamar Data Transport

Archive Server. See Tape Backup Server.

Avamar Data Transport Framework. The framework is a service oriented architecture that provides applications with common services like communication, security, and event logging.

Control Node. The control node is a 64-bit Linux host where the Avamar Data Transport application and the Avamar Data Transport Framework run. The Avamar Data Transport user interface is accessed from a web server that is installed on this host. In addition, the database of all transported files is often located on the control node. There is only one control node in an Avamar Data Transport system.

Purging. A process that prepares a transport node as a new target for replication, or as a new target for a recover operation.

Replication. The process whereby specified client backups on the primary Avamar server are copied to the transport node.

Retention Policies. There are two separate types of retention polices to understand in the Avamar Data Transport system. The first type of retention policies are those used to determine how long to keep Avamar client backups in the Avamar system (see Retention Policies on page 12). The other type of retention policies are those used by tape backup applications which are used to determine how long to keep ADT backups on tape.

Springboards In the Avamar Data Transport GUI the workspaces display windows called springboards that show system status and provide launch points into system functionality.

Tape Backup Server. Avamar Data Transport supports the EMC NetWorker® or Symantec NetBackup tape backup products. Both of these products have a server component that drives the tape archiving process.

Transport Node. Transport nodes are Avamar Virtual Edition servers that have been modified specifically for use in the Avamar Data Transport system. They are the targets of replication from Avamar servers, and they are used as backup and restore targets by the tape backup server.

VMware

COS. Console Operating System. The COS is the core VMware ESX Server operating system and root console. Also referred to as the ESX Service Console.

ESX Server Farm. A logical grouping of VMware ESX Servers that share storage.

RDM. Raw disk mapping. RDM is a construct that maps a virtual disk to a pass-through SCSI device.

VIN. Virtual infrastructure node. VIN is a VMware licensing bundle that includes licenses for ESX Server, VMotion, VSMP, and a VirtualCenter node license.

VMware ESX Server. The foundation for delivering virtualization-based distributed service to IT environments. A core building block of VMware Infrastructure, ESX Server is a virtualization layer that abstracts processor, memory, storage, and networking resources into multiple virtual machines running side-by-side on the same server. Avamar Data Transport can run on either ESX or ESXi.

VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS). A high-performance cluster file system for ESX Server virtual machines. Each virtual machine is encapsulated in a small set of files and VMFS is the default storage system for these files on physical SCSI disks and partitions.

VirtualCenter Management Server. The user interface that delivers centralized management, operational automation, resource optimization, and high availability to IT environments.

VMware Virtual Machine. A representation of a physical machine by software. A virtual machine has its own set of virtual hardware (for example, RAM, CPU, NIC, hard disks, and so forth) upon which an operating system and applications are installed. The operating system sees a consistent, normalized set of hardware regardless of the actual physical hardware components. VMware virtual machines contain advanced hardware features such as 64-bit computing and virtual symmetric multiprocessing.

Virtual Infrastructure Client (VI Client). An interface that allows administrators and users to connect remotely to the VirtualCenter Management Server or individual ESX Server installations from any Windows platform.

Virtual Infrastructure Web Access. A web interface for virtual machine management and remote consoles access.

vSphere Client. An interface that allows administrators and users to connect remotely to the vCenter Server or individual ESX Server installations from any Windows platform.

Host. The virtual representation of the computing and memory resources of a physical machine running ESX Server.

Cluster. The aggregate computing and memory resources when one or more physical machines are grouped together to work and be managed as a whole. Machines can be dynamically added or removed from a Cluster.

Resource Pool. A hierarchical grouping of computing and memory resources from Hosts and Clusters.

Datastore. Virtual representations of combinations of underlying physical storage resources in the data center. These physical storage resources can be provisioned from the local SCSI disks of the server, the Fibre Channel SAN disk arrays, the iSCSI SAN disk arrays, or Network Attached Storage (NAS) arrays.

Networks. In the virtual environment, networks connect virtual machines to each other or to the physical network outside of the virtual data center.

Logging in

IMPORTANT: The first time you run the Avamar DataTransport GUI, you must set the lockbox password andprovide information for the administrator account. EMCAvamar Data Transport Installation and Reference Manualprovides more information.

To log in:

1. Type your username in the User Name text box.

2. Type your password in the Password text box.

3. Click Login.

You have three tries to provide the correct login information.

Login failures

If you enter incorrect login information, the login process displays the following Error dialog box.

Click OK and type the correct password in the Password text box.

If you exceed three login tries without entering the correct login information, Avamar Data Transport displays the following Error dialog box:

Contact the administrator to unlock your account.

Each failed login attempt creates a warning security event.

Session timeouts

The amount of time a logged-in session remains active depends upon the session timeout setting. (The default setting is 45 minutes.) When a logged-in session is inactive for more than the session timeout setting, the session is automatically terminated. An Error dialog box appears after user interaction:

Your session has timed out. Please refresh the browser to log back in.

If your session times out:

1. Click OK in the Error dialog box.

2. Refresh the browser.

The EMC Avamar Data Transport login screen appears.

About the GUI screensThe Avamar Data Transport GUI has two screens. The first screen is the login screen.

After login, the GUI displays the EMC Avamar Data Transport screen. This is the main interface screen. The first time you log in, the Administration workspace appears with three empty rectangles.

The rectangles represent drop zones for springboards.

The EMC Avamar Data Transport screen also contains two tabs stacked vertically along the left side:

• The WORKSPACE tab contains, My Workspace and Administration, by default. • The TOOLBAR tab displays an icon for the active springboard and a list of

available springboards.

The list of springboards available on the TOOLBAR tab depends on the roles assigned to the user. A user with the User role, has access to the Events, Security Events, and My Profile springboards, for example.

About the WORKSPACES tabThe WORKSPACES tab opens and closes horizontally by clicking it. Initially, the WORKSPACES tab contains icons for My Workspace and Administration.

Whenever an administrator installs a value-added (VA) application, Avamar Data Transport creates a new icon for the application on the WORKSPACES tab. For example, after installing the Avamar Data Transport application, the WORKSPACES tab includes the ADT icon.

A workspace provides screen real estate for placing springboards. With the Avamar Data Transport GUI, you can customize workspaces by adding or removing springboards, or by copying springboards to My Workspace.

My Workspace

My Workspace is a user-defined workspace. Initially, My Workspace contains three rectangles, which represent drop zones for springboards. My Workspace provides an area for you to organize frequently-used springboards for easy access.

Administration workspace

The Administration workspace includes up to ten springboards The types of springboards available to a user depend on the user’s role assignments. The following table describes Administration Role management springboards.

SPRINGBOARD DESCRIPTION

Applications Installs and uninstalls VA applications, and displays application version information.

Configuration Configures system and message settings.

Disaster Recovery Backs up and restores the Avamar Data Transport components.

Events Displays Avamar Data Transport system events. All users have access to this springboard. The data displayed by the ADT framework is based on the user’s “role” assignments.

Log Information Saves log files for Avamar Data Transport components and value-added (VA) applications and displays the log files in a table format.

About the TOOLBAR tabThe TOOLBAR tab opens and closes horizontally by clicking it. When the TOOLBAR tab is open, it displays the icon for the active workspace and the Springboards list.

In the following illustration, the ADT workspace is active.

Springboards list

The Springboards list enables you to add or remove springboards to or from a workspace. The roles for the current user determine what springboards are available in the Springboards list.

To add a springboard to a workspace:

1. Expand the WORKSPACES tab and select a workspace.

2. Click the checkbox preceding the springboard.

The springboard is added to the selected workspace.

My Profile Sets options for individual user accounts. All users have access to this springboard.

Role Management Adds and removes user roles.

Security Events Displays the current security threat level in the ADT framework by using five colors to categorize threat levels.

Tasks Displays the total number of tasks currently active in the ADT framework. The tasks are sorted into five status categories: active, scheduled, cancelled, completed, and failed.

User Management Creates and edits users.

To remove a springboard from a workspace:

1. Expand the WORKSPACES tab and select a workspace.

2. Clear the checkbox preceding the springboard.

The springboard is removed from the selected workspace.

In the following illustration, for example, the checkboxes preceding the ADT Server, Queued Tasks, and the Quick Launch springboards are selected.

These springboards would be available in the ADT workspace. The checkbox next to the Avamar Servers springboard is not selected. The Avamar Servers springboard, therefore, would not be available in the ADT workspace.

The Springboards list for My Workspace includes two exclusive functions:

• Editing the Springboards list• Removing springboards from the Springboards list

NOTE: These functions are not available in the Spring-boards lists for value-added (VA) application or Administra-tion workspaces.

Editing the Springboards list

To edit springboards from My Workspace:

1. Click WORKSPACES, and then click My Workspace.

The My Workspace screen appears.

2. Click TOOLBAR to expand it.

3. Below the Springboards list, click [edit].

The My Workspace Springboards dialog box appears.

4. Select a component from the Workspace list.

A list of springboards available for the selected component appears in the Available Springboards pane.

5. Select or clear checkboxes preceding springboard names:

(a) To include a springboard in the component’s Springboards list, select the checkbox preceding the springboard name.

(b) To exclude a springboard from the component’s Springboards list, clear the checkbox preceding the springboard name.

6. Repeat steps 4–5 to edit the Springboards list for other components, or if finished continue to step 7.

7. Click OK to commit the edits, or Cancel to quit.

Avamar Data Transport updates the Springboards list accordingly.

Removing springboards from the Springboards list

To remove springboards from the Springboards list for My Workspace:

1. Click WORKSPACES, and then click My Workspace.

The My Workspace screen appears.

2. Click TOOLBAR to expand it.

3. In the Springboards list, click the delete icon next to the springboard.

NOTE: Moving the mouse pointer over the delete icon high-lights it.

The Alert dialog box appears.

4. Click OK to remove the springboard from the Springboards list, or Cancel to quit.

Customizing the GUIYou can move springboards within a workspace or copy them to My Workspace.

Moving a springboard in a workspace

You can move a springboard by dragging and dropping it onto another springboard or onto a valid drop zone. (Drop zones are represented by dotted-line rectangles.)

1. Click and hold the mouse cursor on the title bar.

2. Drag the springboard to a valid drop zone and drop it by releasing the mouse button.

The springboard appears as a transparent rectangle as it is moved.

NOTE: The mouse cursor changes to a icon to indicatean invalid drop zone.

Copying a springboard to My Workspace

Each springboard in the Administration or value-added (VA) applications workspaces contains a house icon in the top right corner.

To copy a springboard to My Workspace:

1. Click the house icon.

Avamar Data Transport makes a copy of the springboard. The springboard now appears in both my My Workspace and the active workspace.

2. To hide (or remove) the springboard from the active workspace, click the hide from workspace icon.

Avamar Data Transport removes the springboard from the active workspace. The springboard remains in My Workspace.

Understanding Avamar Data TransportAvamar Data Transport enables you to make a tape backup of Avamar client data. It does this by replicating data for each client in a domain group to a VMware virtual machine that is configured as a transport node on the Avamar Data Transport server. After this data replicates from the Avamar server to a transport node, the data is backed up to tape by either EMC NetWorker or Symantec NetBackup. The data is then indexed and stored in a database so that you can search for the data later as part of the recovery process.

If a user requires the recovery of data that is no longer on the Avamar server, then you can search the tape backup through Avamar Data Transport. When you find the necessary data, you then can recover the backup that contains the data from tape. The backup is recovered to a transport node. You then can connect the Avamar client to the transport node and recover the data to the client machine.

Avamar server

Avamar Data Transport System services run on the Avamar server and communicate with the Avamar Data Transport control node that runs on a separate host, generally a virtual machine.

ESX server hosting Avamar Data Transport Nodes

The Avamar Data Transport solution utilizes a VMware ESX or ESXi server which hosts multiple virtual machines. These virtual machines include the Avamar Data Transport control node and the transport nodes used to copy client data to tape.

The core of the Avamar Data Transport solution is the control node, which provides communication infrastructure between the Avamar server and the transport nodes. In addition to the Avamar Data Transport software, a PostgreSQL database on the control node manages an index of all files backed up to tape by Avamar Data Transport.

You can configure multiple transport nodes to share the burden of copying Avamar client data to tape. Avamar Data Transport Node services run on each transport node. The services connect to the tape backup server running either NetWorker or NetBackup.

Tape backup server

The tape backup server is the host on which the tape backup software runs—either NetWorker or NetBackup. Each transport node on the Avamar Data Transport server connects to this tape backup server through the Avamar Data Transport Node services on the transport node.

Tape library

The tape library is connected to the tape backup server and contains the tape media on which the Avamar client data is stored after it replicates from the Avamar server to the Avamar Data Transport server.

Exploring the user interfaceThe Avamar Data Transport graphical user interface (GUI) is a workspace within the Avamar Data Transport Framework GUI. Inside the workspace are windows called springboards that show system status and provide launch points into system functionality.

As part of the Avamar Data Transport Framework GUI, the Avamar Data Transport application GUI supports the following web browsers:

The ADT Server springboard provides a summary of the transport nodes in the environment. It also enables you to launch a server viewer to view detailed activity in real time for each transport node on the Avamar Data Transport server.

Avamar Servers springboard

The Avamar Servers springboard provides status information for each Avamar server from which Avamar Data Transport replicates data.

Queued Tasks springboard

The Queued Tasks springboard lists the Avamar Data Transport tasks that are pending or currently in progress. You can change the order in which tasks are processed or cancel a task.

NOTE: Only 50 tasks are displayed in the queue.

Quick Launch springboard

The Quick Launch springboard provides access to the following frequently used functions:

• Transport Settings — Enables you to configure replication and recovery settings.

• Reports — Enables you to monitor system activity that has already occurred.• Search By Client — Enables you to search the tape backup for a backup that

contains data for a specific client, and then to recover the backup that contains the client data.

The User Management springboard enables an administrator (a user with the Administrator role) to create, edit, and disable user accounts. An administrator also uses the User Management springboard to unlock user accounts for users, who fail to log in after three tries.

Creating a user accountTo create a user account:

1. In the User Management springboard, click Create User.

The Create User dialog box appears.

2. Type the appropriate information in each text box.

The following table describes each text box.

TEXT BOX DESCRIPTION

User Name Type a unique name. Maximum length is 32 alphanumeric characters. Do not use special characters, or leading or trailing spaces. The username is case insensitive.

First Name Type the user’s first name. Maximum length is 32 alphanumeric characters. Do not use special characters, or leading or trailing spaces.

Last Name Type the user’s last name. Maximum length is 32 alphanumeric characters. Do not use special characters, or leading or trailing spaces.

Email Address

Type the user’s email address in the standard email format:[email protected]

Valid email addresses contain 5 to 64 characters.

Status Select Active to enable the user account, or Inactive to disable it.

The Role Management springboard enables an administrator to add or delete roles to or from a user account. Roles enable a user access to components and functionality within the Avamar Data Transport system and access to value-added (VA) applications. The types of roles a user is assigned, determine what springboards are available to the user, what types of events are viewable by the user, and what VA applications are accessible to the user, for example.

What happens during data transportThe following steps occur when you set up a transport group to move Avamar server data to tape:

1. In the Avamar Data Transport application GUI, you create a transport group by selecting the Avamar domains you want to transport to tape. As part of the transport group creation process, you create a schedule for when the transport job will run. However, you always have the option to run the job “immediately” if necessary.

When the transport job runs, the job appears in the Queued Tasks springboard in the ADT workspace.

2. When the task reaches the top of the task queue and a transport node is available, Avamar Data Transport replicates the backups of all the clients contained in the transport group to the transport node.

It is possible to set filters on a transport group to limit what types of client backups to transport to tape.

3. After the data replicates to the transport node, Avamar Data Transport node services initiates the tape backup process, and the backup manager software on the tape backup server (NetWorker or NetBackup) moves the data to tape.

4. After the transport to tape is complete, the transport node is purged and prepared for another task (either transport or recovery).

The ADT Transport Settings windowOn the Quick Launch springboard, the Transport Settings button launches the ADT Transport Settings window that enables you to configure transport settings, to run transport jobs immediately, and view clients in a transport group.

• To configure global transport settings that apply to all transport groups, click Global Automation Settings. “Configuring global automation settings” on page 42 provides details on the available options.

• To create a transport group, click on an Avamar server, and then click Add. The GUI displays the domains on the selected Avamar server, and you can click which domains you want to include in the transport group. As part of this process, you can create a schedule for automatically transporting client backups in the transport group to tape. “Creating a transport group” on page 43 provides details on other available options.

• To move a transport group’s client backups to tape immediately, click the desired transport group, and then click Run Immediately. “Moving transport groups to tape immediately” on page 46 provides details on the available options.

• To view a list of clients that belong to a transport group, click the transport group, and then click the Clients tab.

Configuring global automation settingsTo specify global transport settings that apply to all transport groups on all Avamar servers:

1. From the Quick Launch springboard in the Avamar Data Transport application GUI, click Transport Settings.

The ADT Transport Settings window appears.

2. Click Global Automation Settings.

3. Choose whether to perform a fast or full Hash File System (HFS) check on data that has replicated from the Avamar server to the transport node:

• To perform a fast HFS check, which verifies the integrity of the data by using fewer checks than a full check, select Fast.

• To perform a full HFS check, select Full.

4. Choose whether to ignore checksum mismatches when you recover data from a tape backup:

• To ignore checksum mismatches and continue with the recovery process, select Ignore recovered replica checksum mismatches.

• To automatically fail the recovery if a checksum mismatch occurs, leave the checkbox clear. The transport node that was assigned to receive the recovered data from the failed task appears with a status of “Failed” unless the Failed Recovery checkbox is selected in the Automatically purge and reuse node on section of the window.

IMPORTANT: If you recover data when a checksum mis-match is identified, then the data may be incomplete or cor-rupt. Use caution when recovering data after a checksummismatch.

5. If a transport or recovery task is canceled or fails, choose whether to automatically remove the data from the transport node and prepare the node for another task by selecting or clearing the checkboxes in the Automatically purge and reuse node on section.

“Cancelled Replication” and “Failed Replication” refer to the portion of the transport process where the Avamar server replicates data to the ADT transport node.

“Cancelled Archival” and “Failed Archival” refer to the portion of the transport process where the contents of the transport node are moved to tape.

NOTE: If you click either “Failed Archival” or “Failed Replica-tion,” you will not be able to restart a failed job from theQueued Tasks springboard.

6. To issue a warning if the transport job takes longer than a certain amount of time, select the Issue warning for exceeding time limit if run longer than checkbox, and then select the time limit from the box and list.

The warning appears in the Event Viewer in the Avamar Data Transport Framework interface.

7. Click OK.

Creating a transport groupA transport group is essentially a list of clients whose backups will be transported to tape from a specific Avamar server. A transport group can contain one or many clients, and filters can be set on the transport group to limited the types of client backups that get moved to tape.

To create and configure a transport group:

1. From the Quick Launch springboard in the Avamar Data Transport application GUI, click Transport Settings.

The ADT Transport Settings window appears.

2. From the Avamar Servers list, select the Avamar server that contains the client backups you want to transport to tape.

3. Click Add.

A transport group is added to the Transport Groups list which by default is named “New Transport Group.”

4. Using the tabs on the right side of the ADT Transport Settings screen, you can configure the characteristics of this transport group.

Tape Backup Manager Retention

Tape backup retention specifies the amount of time that the data is retained in the tape backup server. The options in the list depend on the retentions configured in either NetWorker or NetBackup. When the retention period expires, the tape backup server will no longer keep references to the data.NOTE: The value set in this field will override any index policy retention that may have been set when creating the NetWorker client that will backup transport nodes. However, any values set in the Networker pool retention policy will override any retention values set on this page as well as any index policy retention that may have been set. In other words, tape-level retention is determined by the following precedence:• Pool retention policy

• Overrides to index policy retention (such as those specified on this screen)

• Index policy retention (which were set on the Networker client at install time)NOTE: Retention periods of less than one day are not displayed in this list.

Media Group

Media Group specifies either the NetWorker group or a NetBackup policy you want to transport the data to. If you specify a media group, the Tape Backup Manager Retention field will be grayed out and set with the value “Media Group.” This means that Avamar Data Transport will use the retention that is set on the media as the retention for the transport operation.If no value is specified for media group, Avamar Data Transport will use the default media group specified in the file/opt/EMC/TransportNodeService/config/3rdpartybackup.properties

which is located on the transport node.

Notes (Optional). Enter any notes that apply to this transport group. Notes can be up to 32,000 characters long.

Transport Schedule

Active/Inactive

Temporarily disable the transport group schedule for a domain by clicking the Inactive option for the schedule. This option preserves the schedule settings for future use but prevents the job from transporting data as scheduled.

Run Every Select the frequency for moving data in this transport group. NOTE: Scheduling in Avamar Data Transport is interval based. The time intervals available are Days, Weeks, and the following intervals: 15 day, 4 week, 30 day, 45 day, 90 day, and 365 day.These intervals do not share all the same features of traditional “calendar” concepts. For example, if you set a schedule to run every 1 day, it will run every 24 hours. If the next day happens to be the end of daylight savings time, that “calendar day” will have 25 hours in it, and your scheduled job will run on the 24th hour of that day, or an hour earlier than it did the day before.

Starting on . . . at

Select the start date and start time for moving data in this transport group.NOTE: Do not schedule a transport job to run at the same time as maintenance activities such as “garbage collection” on the Avamar server. Transport jobs will fail if they are scheduled to start while garbage collection is running on the Avamar server. This is because the Avamar server does not grant a connection to the control node during garbage collection.NOTE: Do not set the schedule for a transport job to occur within one minute of the time that you set the schedule. 4. In the Scheduling section, set the “Include backups between” fields to a range that will include the data you want to transport to tape.

5. In the Details section, select the retention period.

The retention period specifies the amount of time that the data is retained in the tape backup. The options in the list depend on the retention policies configured in either NetWorker or NetBackup. When the retention expires and the data is removed from the tape backup, the information for the data also is removed from the index database on the Avamar Data Transport control node.

The value you select in this field will override any group (NetWorker) or policy (NetBackup) retention that was set on the tape backup server.

NOTE: The value set in the Retention field will override anyindex policy retention that may have been set when creatingthe NetWorker client that will backup transport nodes. How-ever, any values set in the NetWorker pool retention policywill override any retention values set on this page as well asany index policy retention that may have been set. In otherwords, tape-level retention is determined by the followingprecedence:

• Pool retention policy• Overrides to index policy retention (such as those speci-

fied on this screen)• Index policy retention (which were set on the Net-

Worker client at install time)

6. If desired, click Override Automation Settings.

What happens when you recover a backupThe following steps occur when a user needs to recover data:

1. The user opens the Avamar client interface and attempts to recover data from a backup on the Avamar server, but the data has expired and is not available.

2. The user contacts the Avamar administrator for assistance in finding the data. The user provides a date when the data would have been included in a client backup.

3. The administrator opens the Avamar Data Transport application GUI and searches the tape backup for a client backup that matches the date provided.

4. The administrator finds the client backup and recovers it to a transport node.

5. The user activates the Avamar client to connect to the transport node instead of the Avamar server.

6. The user restores the data from the transport node to the client machine using the Avamar client. Optionally, the administrator could restore the data to the Avamar client using the Avamar Administrator.

7. The user activates the Avamar client to connect to the Avamar server instead of the transport node. (In other words, the user deactivates from the transport node and reactivates to the Avamar server.)

8. The administrator opens the Avamar Data Transport application GUI to purge the backup set from the transport node and prepare the node for additional tasks in the queue. “Purging a node after a recovery” on page 57 provides details.

At the far top right of the Filter Panel is an icon that toggles between these two

For example, then, when you start a search, the Filter Panel will display by default in “search criteria and results” mode. After you click the Search button, the results are displayed in the “results only” mode. However, if the search results were not what you expected, you can click the expand/collapse icon which will toggle back to “search criteria and results” mode, allowing you to refine your search criteria.

Search by Client Display Columns

When you perform a search by client, the results of that search display the client backups that match your search criteria. These results are displayed in the following columns:

• Archive ID—an internal Avamar Data Transport sequence number. This is a unique key per ADT archive.

• Archive Date—the date Avamar Data Transport wrote the backup to tape.• Backup Label—an Avamar backup label.• Backup Creation Date—the date the Avamar client backed up the files to the

Avamar server.• Client—the host name of the Avamar client that created the back up.• Domain—the domain on the Avamar server where the Avamar client resides.

Searching the tape archive for client backupsTo search the tape backup for data to recover from a specific client:

1. (Optional) To ensure that a transport node is available for the recovery process after you find the data, reserve the node by using the instructions in “Reserving a transport node for recovery” on page 55.

2. Verify the recovery settings for the domain group, such as whether to perform an HFS check on the recovered data and whether to cancel recovery if a checksum mismatch occurs. “Creating a transport group” on page 43 provides details on how to select domain group settings.

3. In the Search section of the Quick Launch springboard in the Avamar Data Transport application GUI, click By Client.

The ADT Archive Search By Client window appears.

4. Select the type of criteria by which to search by selecting or clearing the checkboxes on the left side of the window:

• To search by when Avamar Data Transport backed up the data to tape, click the Archive Date checkbox.

• To search by when the Avamar server backed up the data from the client, click the Backup Creation Date checkbox.

• To search by the Avamar label, click the Backup Label checkbox.• To search for data from a certain client, click the Client checkbox.

The search options that appear depend on the checkboxes you select.

5. To search by the date and time that the data was backed up to tape by Avamar Data Transport, select the date and time range from the Archive Date boxes and lists.

6. To search by the date and time that the data was backed up by the Avamar server, select the date and time range from the Backup Creation Date boxes and lists.

7. To search by client, type the name of the client in the Client Name box.

8. From the Sort By list, choose the criteria by which to sort the search results, and then choose whether to sort them in ascending or descending order.

9. Click Search.

Data in the tape backup that meet the search criteria are listed in the Filter Panel.

If there are a significant number of results, you can page through the results. You also may want to sort them by clicking a column heading.

NOTE: If a search yields more than 1,000 matches, the first50 matches are displayed and a warning message advisesyou to refine your search criteria and try again.

10.Click the item you want to recover and click the Recover icon.

NOTE: You cannot add more than 50 replication and/orrecovery tasks to the queue. Do not initiate a recovery taskif there are already 50 tasks in the queue.

11.Click OK on the confirmation message.

The recovery job is placed in the job queue and is displayed in the Queued Tasks springboard.

12.After the recovery has completed, the Avamar client on the client machine can be activated to the transport node where the archive was recovered.

13.Recover the data from the transport node to the client machine by using the Avamar client.

14.Activate the Avamar client to connect back to the Avamar server instead of the transport node. (In other words, deactivate from the transport node and reactivate to the Avamar server.)

15. Purge the backup set from the transport node and prepare it for additional tasks in the queue. “Purging a node after a recovery” on page 57 provides details.

NOTE: The node cannot be used for other Avamar DataTransport tasks until it is purged and prepared.

Monitoring transport nodesYou can monitor the status of the current tasks on each node of an Avamar Data Transport server. If necessary, you can manage the activity of the nodes based on their status.

To monitor and manage transport nodes:

1. From the ADT Server springboard, click Launch ADT Server Viewer.

The ADT Server window appears with a list of all transport nodes. The following information appears for each node:

• The type of task currently running on the node• The status of the task that is in progress on the node• The overall status (offline, online, and so on) of the node

NOTE: To view a list of tasks that are pending or that havecompleted, use the Queued Tasks springboard, as dis-cussed in “Managing Tasks” on page 58.

Reserving a transport node for recoveryYou can reserve a transport node to ensure that the node is available for a recovery task. The transport node is then used for a recovery, even if there are replication tasks that are ready to begin.

To reserve a transport node:

1. From the ADT Server springboard, select the Avamar Data Transport server that contains the node and click Launch ADT Server Viewer.

The ADT Server window appears.

2. Select the node to reserve and click the Toggle Reserve for Recovery

icon ( ).

If a task is currently in progress on the node, the task completes. Then the node is purged and reserved.

If there are no tasks in progress on the node, then the node is immediately reserved.

A green arrow appears on the open lock icon to left of the node name in the ADT Server window to indicate that the node is reserved.

Taking a transport node offlineWhen you take a transport node offline, the node is not available to process replication and recovery tasks. You may want to do this, for example, to perform system maintenance on the node.

NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you only take nodesoffline when they are in an idle or completed state. If you tryto take a transport node offline while it is in a running state,the running job may not cancel.

To take a transport node offline or to bring it online:

1. From the ADT Server springboard, select the Avamar Data Transport server that contains the node and click Launch ADT Server Viewer.

The ADT Server window appears.

2. Click the node whose state you want to toggle and then click the Toggle

Online/Offline icon ( ).

3. Click OK to continue toggling the state of the node.

The node status switches to the opposite state and the icon to the left of the node name changes.

NOTE: It may take as long as one or two minutes for thenode to be set offline or online.

NOTE: After performing a recovery operation, the transportnode is left in an “Activating node after recovery mode.” Thisallows users to connect to the transport node and restorefiles from it. However, in this state, you cannot set the nodeoffline. The interface allows you to try to offline the node,but no errors or warnings are reported and the node will notgo offline. To take the node off line in this state, click the

Unreserve and purge icon ( ). After the node isreported as “Purging - Completed” then you can set thetransport node offline.

Purging a node after a recoveryAfter you recover data to a transport node and successfully restore data from the transport node to a client machine, you can purge the recovered data from the node and prepare it for another task in the queue.

To purge a transport node and prepare it for the next available task:

1. Ensure that the Avamar client is no longer activated to the transport node. In other words, reactivate the Avamar client to the Avamar server.

2. From the ADT Server springboard, select the Avamar Data Transport server that contains the node and click Launch ADT Server Viewer.

The ADT Server window appears.

3. Select the node and click the Run next available task icon ( ).

4. Click OK on the confirmation message.

Unreserving and purging a nodeTo clear the reservation of a node and purge the node even if a task is currently in progress on the node:

1. From the ADT Server springboard, select the Avamar Data Transport server that contains the node and click Launch ADT Server Viewer.

The ADT Server window appears.

2. Select the node and click the Unreserve and purge icon ( ).

The task that is currently in progress is canceled, and the status of the purge process appears in the ADT Server window. The process is complete when a Completed status is listed in the Task State column for the node.

3. Click OK on the confirmation message.

NOTE: Clicking Unreserve and purge does not change theToggle Reserve for Recovery state. That is, if the nodehas been reserved for recovery, it will only accept recoveryjobs after the Unreserve and purge operation has com-pleted. If you want the node to accept transport jobs, youwill need to click Toggle Reserve for Recovery after theUnreserve and purge operation has completed.

The Queued Tasks springboard provides a list of pending and in progress tasks. Tasks are listed first by priority and then by the time the task was queued. The following topics provide details on managing the tasks in the queue:

Changing the order of tasks in the queueYou can change the priority of tasks in the queue to change the order in which the tasks are processed.

To promote a task in the queue to a higher priority:

1. From the Queued Tasks springboard, click the Bump this task to a

higher priority icon ( ) next to the task to promote.

2. Click OK on the confirmation message.

Canceling a pending taskTo cancel a task that has been scheduled to occur but has not started yet:

1. From the Queued Tasks springboard, click Remove this task from the

queue icon ( ) next to the task.

2. Click OK on the confirmation message.

Retrying a failed taskMANAGING TASKS

Canceling a task that is in progressTo cancel a task that is in progress:

1. From the Queued Tasks springboard, click Cancel this running task

icon ( ) next to the task.

2. Click OK on the confirmation message.

NOTE: You cannot cancel a replication task if the task iscurrently at the stage where Avamar Data Transport isindexing file data that was backed up to tape. Similarly, youcannot cancel a task when the node is being purged and pre-pared for reuse.

Retrying a failed taskWhen a Queued Task fails, there are two scenarios to consider:

• Failure during replication—If a job fails during replication, you can retry the job starting with the client backup that failed. (That is, it does not restart the replication with the first client backup in the transport group.) In some cases, retrying a job will result in the task completing successfully.

• Failure during archiving—If a job fails during the archiving process, you can retry archiving the transport node. (That is, ADT does not need to replicate the transport group again, just retry archiving the transport node to tape). In some cases, retrying a job will result in the task completing successfully.

To determine what stage the task failed in, use the ADT Server viewer to see the Task Type on the transport node that reports the failure.

To retry a task that has failed:

1. From the Queued Tasks springboard, click the red exclamation mark icon.

2. From the Action Required dialog, click Retry Task. You also have the option on this dialog to Fail Job.

To view completed task details:

1. From the Quick Launch springboard, click Reports.

The ADT Job Reports window appears.

Refreshing the list of completed tasks

The icon to the right of the print icon displays the status for the job reports.

To refresh the list of completed tasks in the ADT Job Reports window, click the

Refresh icon ( ).

Any additional tasks that completed since you first opened the ADT Job Reports window are added to the list.

Filtering the list of completed tasks

If there are a significant number of completed tasks in the ADT Job Reports window, you can filter the results to find a specific task.

To filter the list of completed tasks:

1. Click the Add Filter icon ( ).

The Job Report Filter window appears.

2. In the Server section, choose whether to view completed tasks from all Avamar servers or from a specific server:

• To view completed tasks from all Avamar servers, select All.• To view completed tasks from a specific server, select Server and then

choose the server from the list.

3. In the Final State section, choose whether to limit the list of tasks to completed, failed, or cancelled tasks by selecting or clearing the checkboxes.

4. In the Date Range section, choose whether to view all completed tasks or to limit the list of tasks to those that completed within a certain date and time range.

• To view all completed tasks, select All.• To view completed tasks within a date and time range, select Between

Dates and then choose the start date, start time, end date, and end time.

5. Click OK.

After you filter the list of completed tasks, you can remove the filter and view the

full list again by selecting the Remove Filter icon ( ).

Downloading the list of completed tasks

You can download the list of completed tasks to your local machine in a comma separated values (CSV) format.

1. Click the Download icon ( ).

2. Specify the location for the job report file.

After the file is downloaded you can use a spreadsheet or word processing program to examine the file.

Printing the list of completed tasks

To print the list of completed tasks in the ADT Job Reports window:

1. Click the Print icon ( ).

A browser window appears with raw data for the list of completed tasks.

2. To print or save the list, use the browser commands to print or save documents.

SYSTEM EVENTS

The Events springboard displays a quick summary of system events and launches the ADT Framework Event Viewer. The ADT Framework Event Viewer displays only events for which a user has roles to view. The Events springboard and the ADT Framework Event Viewer automatically refresh their contents every 30 seconds.

Viewing a quick summary of system eventsThe Events springboard displays a quick summary of current event notifications by using a heatpad as shown in the following illustration.

The top bar shows a total of 52 event notifications. The heatpad shows the distribution of the 52 events into four categories:

• Red for critical event notifications.• Orange for severe event notifications.• Yellow for warning event notifications.• Blue for informational event notifications.

NOTE: Acknowledged events are not included in the totals.

When there are no unacknowledged events, the top bar contains the text, “0 Event Notifications” and the bottom bar is solid blue and contains a 0 (zero).

Viewing complete details for system eventsTo view complete system event details:

1. In the Events springboard, click Launch Event Viewer.

The ADT Framework Event Viewer opens in a separate browser window or in a separate browser tab.

NOTE: The specific browser being used and its settingsdetermine which method is used to open the ADT Frame-work Event Viewer.

The top two bars of the ADT Framework Event Viewer (the total number of unacknowledged event notifications and the color-coded bar) are carried over from the Events springboard.

The six-column table below the taskbar contains details about all current system events.

The following table describes each column.

COLUMN DESCRIPTION

Message Lists all event messages. Click the Message column heading to sort events alphabetically. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Message column heading again.

Severity Lists severity icons and labels. Click the Severity column heading to sort events by severity. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Severity column heading again.

Time Lists the time the event occurred. Click the Time column heading to sort events by time. To alternate between ascending and descending order, click the Time column heading again.

Components Lists system components that issued events. Click the Component column heading sort events alphabetically by component. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Component column heading again.

Details Contains a balloon icon. Click the balloon icon to display event details in a pop-up window. Pop-up windows combine the information from the Message, Severity, Time, and Component columns into a quick-view summary.

Ack Contains a checkbox. Click an event’s checkbox to select an event or to clear a selected event.

2. To close the ADT Framework Event Viewer, close the specific browser window.

Closing the ADT Framework Event Viewer does not close the Avamar Data Transport GUI.

Updating the events table

The Avamar Data Transport framework updates the information in the events table when you:

• Launch the Event Viewer.

• Click .

• Add a filter.

The Avamar Data Transport framework, by default, updates the information in the ADT Framework Event Viewer every 30 seconds.

The icon to the right of the taskbar displays the status for the information in the table.

Resizing table columns

To resize table columns:

1. In the ADT Framework Event Viewer, click and hold the mouse cursor on the vertical line between two columns in the table.

2. Drag the vertical line to the desired width and release the mouse button.

Using the taskbar

The taskbar in the ADT Framework Event Viewer contains five task icons.

The following table describes each taskbar icon.

Using the navigational arrows

Navigational arrows are located below the ADT Framework Event Viewer table on the right and left sides. These arrows are active when events comprise more than one page. The page number is located in the bottom bar of the ADT Framework Event Viewer.

The following table describes each arrow.

Filtering events

To filter events:

1. In the ADT Framework Event Viewer, click the filter icon on taskbar.

The Event Filter dialog box appears.

Remove current filter.

Acknowledge selected events.

Select all events. After clicking the icon, it changes to the deselect all events icon.

Clear the selection of all events. After clicking the icon, it changes to the select all events icon.

2. Select filter criteria.

The Event Filter dialog box uses five panels to group filter criteria.

The following table lists these panels and describes the specific filter criteria.

3. If you select Between the following times:

(a) Click the date field to display the calendar.

(b) Use the navigational arrows to select a month, and then select a date.

(c) In the time field, type a time using the standard format, hh:mm.

(d) Use the navigational up/down arrows to select AM or PM.

(e) Repeat steps a–d to set an end date and time.

4. Click OK to apply the filter criteria or Cancel to quit.

The ADT Framework Event Viewer table shows events based on the filter criteria you specified.

5. Click the delete filter icon to clear filter criteria.

PANEL CRITERIA

Severities Select one or more types:

Acknowledged Select a type of acknowledgment:

• Un-acknowledged displays all unacknowledged events.

Acknowledging events

To acknowledge events:

1. In the ADT Framework Event Viewer, select events by clicking checkboxes in the Ack column:

• To select all events, click the select all events icon.

• To clear all events, click the deselect all events icon.

2. Click the acknowledge events icon.

Avamar Data Transport removes acknowledged events from the ADT Framework Event Viewer table.

SECURITY EVENTS

Avamar Data Transport components and value-added (VA) applications post security events to the Avamar Data Transport message bus. Avamar Data Transport includes a security service module, which can run on one or more servers that have access to the message bus. The security service module listens on the message bus for security events from Avamar Data Transport components or VA applications.

Whenever a security event occurs, Avamar Data Transport sends a security event notification to the Avamar Data Transport GUI. The GUI displays security event information as a quick summary from the Security Events springboard, or as a detailed listing in a table from the Security Event Viewer. The Security Event Viewer also enables you to filter events by specifying filter criteria, to archive a set of security events, and to delete security events.

Viewing the current security threat levelThe Security Events springboard uses color-coded graphics to show the current security threat level in the system. The following illustration depicts a high security threat level:

Avamar Data Transport uses five colors to categorize threat levels:

• Green for a low threat level• Yellow for a medium threat level• Orange for a high threat level• Red for a critical threat level• Gray for an unknown threat level (the server may be down)

The current threat level is synonymous with the most critical security threat present in the system. For example, if 99 out of 100 security events are informational security events, and 1 is a critical security event, Avamar Data Transport categorizes the threat level as high. The highest, or most critical event, determines the current threat level in the Avamar Data Transport system. Using color makes it easy to quickly check the system’s current threat level.

You manage security events from the Security Event Viewer.

COLUMN DESCRIPTION

Message Lists all security event messages. Click the Message column heading to sort security events alphabetically. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Message column heading again.

Severity Lists severity icons and labels. Click the Severity column heading to sort security events by severity. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Severity column heading again.

Time Lists the time the security event occurred. Click the Time column heading to sort security events by time. To alternate between ascending and descending order, click the Time column heading again.

Component Lists system components that issued security events. Click the Component column heading sort security events alphabetically by component. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Component column heading again.

User Lists the user account associated to the security event.

Details Contains a information icon. Click the information icon to display security event details in a pop-up window. Pop-up windows combine the information from the Message, Severity, Time, and Component columns into a quick-view summary.

Select Contains a checkbox. Click a security event’s checkbox to select a security event or to clear a selected security event.

2. To close the Security Event Viewer, close the specific browser window.

Closing the Security Event Viewer does not close the Avamar Data Transport GUI.

Resizing table columns

To resize table columns:

1. In the Security Event Viewer, click and hold the mouse cursor on the vertical line between two columns in the table.

2. Drag the vertical line to the desired width and release the mouse button.

Using the taskbar

The taskbar in the Security Event Viewer contains seven task icons.

The following table describes each taskbar icon.

CLICK ON THIS ICON: TO PERFORM THIS TASK:

Update the contents on the page with new events that have occurred.

Add or edit an event filter.

Remove event filter.

Archive selected security events.

Delete selected security events.

Select all security events. After clicking the icon, it changes to the deselect all security events icon.

Clear the selection all security events. After clicking the icon, it changes to back to the select all security events icon.

Reset threat level.

Navigational arrows are located below the Security Event Viewer table on the right and left sides. These arrows are active when events comprise more than one page. The page number is located in the bottom bar of the Security Event Viewer.

The following table describes each arrow.

Filtering security events

To filter security events:

1. In the Security Event Viewer, click the filter icon on the taskbar.

The Security Event Filter dialog box appears.

2. Select filter criteria.

The Security Event Filter dialog box uses three panels to group filter criteria.

The following table lists these panels and describes the specific filter criteria.

ICON DESCRIPTION

Displays the next page.

Displays the previous page.

Displays the last page of events.

Displays the first page of events.

PANEL CRITERIA

Severities Select one or more types of security events to display:

3. If you select Between the following times:

(a) Click the date field to display the calendar.

(b) Use the navigational arrows to select a month, and then select a date.

(c) In the time field, type a time using the standard format, hh:mm.

(d) Use the navigational up/down arrows to select AM or PM.

(e) Repeat steps a–d to set an end date and time.

4. Click OK to apply the filter criteria, or Cancel to quit.

The Security Event Viewer table shows events based on the filter criteria you specified.

5. Click the delete filter icon to clear filter criteria.

Date Range Specifies the date range:• All displays all security events regardless of a date

Archiving security events

To archive security events:

1. In the Security Event Viewer, click the checkbox for each security event to archive.

NOTE: Click the select all security events icon to selectall security events.

2. Click the archive selected events icon.

An informational dialog box appears.

3. In the dialog box, click OK to archive the security events, or Cancel to quit.

The security events are written to the SecurityArchive.xml file.

NOTE: The SecurityArchive.xml file is located in a directoryon the control node. The directory location is specified by the<archiveLocation></archiveLocation> XML tags in the /opt/EMC/IMFSecurityLogger/config/SecurityLog.config file. Formore information, refer to the Avamar Data TransportInstallation and Reference Manual.

Deleting security events

To delete security events:

1. In the Security Event Viewer, click the checkbox for each security event to delete.

NOTE: Click the select all security events icon to selectall security events.

2. Click the delete icon.

An informational dialog box appears.

IMPORTANT: Deleting a security event permanentlydeletes it from the Security Events database. Alternatively,save the event to the archive file (SecurityArchive.xml). See“Archiving security events” on page 77.

3. Click OK to delete the security events, or Cancel to quit.

Resetting security threat level

After you address security events, reset the threat level setting.

In the Security Event Viewer, click the reset threat level icon.

Viewing a quick summary of ADT tasksTASKS

TASKS

The Tasks springboard displays the total number of tasks sorted into five categories, and launches the ADT Framework Task Viewer. The ADT Framework Task Viewer displays only tasks for which a user has roles to view. The Tasks springboard and the Tasks Viewer automatically refresh their contents every 30 seconds.

Viewing a quick summary of ADT tasksThe Tasks springboard displays a quick summary of the number of tasks sorted into five categories:

• Active• Scheduled• Cancelled • Completed• Failed

The Tasks springboard summary includes user-driven tasks as well as tasks run by the Avamar Data Transport scheduler component.

To view the complete details for ADT tasks, click Launch Task Viewer.

The Avamar Data Transport framework stores task data in a database. Tasks that have completed or have been cancelled are removed by a clean-up procedure.

Avamar Data Transport displays a taskbar that contains three icons and a nine-column table. The nine-column table contains details about tasks.

The following table describes each column.

COLUMN DESCRIPTION

Name Lists the task’s name. Click the Names column heading to sort tasks alphabetically. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Names column heading again.

Description Provides a short description of the task. Click the Description column heading to sort tasks alphabetically by the description. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Description column heading again.

Current Step Provides details about the current phase or step for the task.Click the Current Step column heading to sort tasks alphabetically by current step. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Current Step column heading again.

Component Lists the system component that activated the task. Click the Component column heading sort tasks alphabetically by component. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the Component column heading again.

State Displays the current state of the task:• Active• Completed• Failed• Scheduled• Cancelled.

Click the State column heading to sort tasks alphabetically by state. To alternate between ascending and descending alphabetical order, click the State column heading again.

End Time Shows the date and time a task completed. Avamar Data Transport framework uses the standard date and time format: yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss.

Details Contains a balloon icon. Click the balloon icon to display the Task Details pop-up window. Pop-up windows combine the information from the Name, Description, and Component columns into a quick-view summary.

Update the contents on the page with the current status of tasks.

LOG FILE INFORMATION

The Log Information springboard enables you to perform the following:

• Save log files for Avamar Data Transport components and value-added (VA) applications.

• View a list of log files and details about the log files for each Avamar Data Transport component and VA application.

When you first notice a problem with an Avamar Data Transport component or a VA application, you can use the Log Information springboard to save the log file for that component. The save operation captures only the activity relevant to the specific time.

IMPORTANT: Only users with the Administrator role haveaccess to the Log Information springboard.

Saving log filesTo save a log file:

1. In the Log Information springboard, select a component.

2. Click Save Logs.

The following status messages appears in the Log Information springboard:Saving Logs...

Logs Saved

The Avamar Data Transport server sends a notification to save all log files for the selected component. The log files are saved to a folder that contains the current date in its name.

Viewing log file listingTo view a list of log files:

1. In the Log Information springboard, select a component and click View Logs.

The Log Viewer opens in a separate browser window or in a separate browser tab.

NOTE: The specific browser being used and its settingsdetermine which method is used to open the Log Viewer.

The Log Viewer uses a tree hierarchy to display details about log files.

GLOSSARY

This glossary provides definitions for many of the terms used in this document.

Avamar Data Transport Node services An Avamar Data Transport component that facilitates communication between the transport nodes and the other components in the Avamar Data Transport system, such as the Avamar Data Transport System services on the Avamar server and the backup software on the tape backup server.

Avamar Data Transport Framework A software framework with services that enable management of value-added (VA) applications such as Avamar Data Transport. The Avamar Data Transport Framework is installed on the control node on the Avamar Data Transport server. Access to the Avamar Data Transport Framework GUI is available through a web browser on a client computer that is on the same network as the Avamar Data Transport server.

Avamar Data Transport server A VMware ESX Server with multiple virtual machines. One virtual machine on the Avamar Data Transport server is designated as the control node. Other virtual machines on the Avamar Data Transport server are designated as transport nodes. See also “control node” on page 86, and “transport node” on page 87.

control node A VMware virtual machine on the Avamar Data Transport server with the Avamar Data Transport Framework foundation installed for system configuration and management and a PostgreSQL database for storage of metadata for files that are backed up from transport nodes. See also “Avamar Data Transport Framework” on page 86.

domains Groups of Avamar clients on the Avamar server.

Hash File System (HFS) check A Hash File System (HFS) check is an internal operation that validates the integrity of a set of domain data that has replicated from the Avamar server to a transport node.

recovery The process of retrieving data that has been backed up to tape and placing it on a transport node. An Avamar client then can connect to the transport node and restore the data to a client machine.

replica A set of data for a domain that has been replicated from an Avamar server to the Avamar Data Transport system.

replication The process of copying de-duplicated data from a domain group on the Avamar server to a transport node.

retention The ability to control the length of time backups will be kept in an Avamar server before automated deletion. Retention can be set to permanent for backups that should not be deleted from an Avamar server. Retention is a persistent and reusable Avamar policy that can be named and attached to multiple groups.

springboard Windows that belong to a specific workspace within the Avamar Data Transport GUI. See also “workspaces” on page 87. A springboard displays status information and links to specific functions. The Avamar Data Transport work space contains the following springboards: ADT Server, Avamar Servers, Queued Tasks, and Quick Launch.

tape backup server A NetWorker or NetBackup server that backs up data that has been replicated to a transport node to tape.

task A program or process that runs on behalf of the Avamar Data Transport system.

transport node A VMware virtual machine on the Avamar Data Transport server with the ADT Node Services component installed. The transport node is a virtual Avamar server that receives replicated data from the primary server. The replicated data is then backed up to tape through a tape backup system. The transport node is also the target of a tape recovery. The recovery is initiated through the Avamar Data Transport application GUI.

workspaces Expandable and collapsible panels (represented by blue horizontal bars) in the Avamar Data Transport Framework interface. Workspaces organize the Avamar Data Transport user interface by functionality or application type. The Avamar Data Transport workspace appears within the Avamar Data Transport GUI after you install Avamar Data Transport.
