This list makes it clear that the perpetual inventory system is vastly superior to the periodic inventory
system. The only case where a periodic system might make sense is when the amount of inventory is
very small, and where you can visually review it without any particular need for more detailed
inventory records. The periodic system can also work well when the warehouse staff is poorly trained
in the uses of a perpetual inventory system, since they might inadvertently record inventory
transactions incorrectly in a perpetual system.
Single-Step Income Statement
A single-step income statement is one of two commonly used formats for the income statement or profit and
loss statement. The single-step format uses only one subtraction to arrive at net income.
An extremely condensed income statement in the single-step format would look like this:
The heading of the income statement conveys critical information. The name of the company appears first, followed by the title "Income Statement." The third line tells the reader the time interval reported on the profit and loss statement. Since income statements can be prepared for any period of time, you must inform the reader of the precise period of time being covered. (For example, an income statement may cover any one My What is the difference between the periodic and perpetual inventory systems? What is the difference between the periodic and perpetual inventory systems?
The periodic and perpetual inventory systems are different methods used to track the quantity of
goods on hand. The more sophisticated of the two is the perpetual system, but it requires much more
record keeping to maintain.
The periodic system relies upon an occasional physical count of the inventory to determine the ending
inventory balance and the cost of goods sold, while the perpetual system keeps continual track of
inventory balances. There are a number of other differences between the two systems, which are as
follows:
Accounts. Under the perpetual system, there are continual updates to either the general ledger or
inventory journal as inventory-related transactions occur. Conversely, under a periodic inventory
system, there is no cost of goods sold account entry at all in an accounting period until such time as
there is a physical count, which is then used to derive the cost of goods sold.
Computer systems. It is impossible to manually maintain the records for a perpetual inventory system,
since there may be thousands of transactions at the unit level in every accounting period. Conversely,
the simplicity of a periodic inventory system allows for the use of manual record keeping for very small
inventories.

Cost of goods sold. Under the perpetual system, there are continual updates to the cost of goods sold
account as each sale is made. Conversely, under the periodic inventory system, the cost of goods sold
is calculated in a lump sum at the end of the reporting period, by adding total purchases to the
beginning inventory and subtracting ending inventory.
Cycle counting. It is impossible to use cycle counting under a periodic inventory system, since there is
no way to obtain accurate inventory counts in real time (which are used as a baseline for cycle
counts).
Purchases. Under the perpetual system, inventory purchases are recorded in either the raw materials
inventory account or merchandise account (depending on the nature of the purchase), while there is
also a unit-count entry into the individual record that is kept for each inventory item. Conversely,
under a periodic inventory system, all purchases are recorded into a purchases asset account, and
there are no individual inventory records to which any unit-count information could be added.
Transaction investigations. It is nearly impossible to track through the accounting records under a
periodic inventory system to determine why an inventory-related error of any kind occurred, since the
information is aggregated at a very high level. Conversely, such investigations are much easier in a
perpetual inventory system, where all transactions are available in detail at the individual unit level.
This list makes it clear that the perpetual inventory system is vastly superior to the periodic inventory

Some forms of a qualitymanagement initiative that I would recommend are Lean Principles or Total Quality management. I feel that either ofthese quality management systems can be adapted and modified to correct the business needs of TheStore. I wouldalso recommend that they use either a balanced scorecard or lead/lag indicators in which they can measure theirsuccess. The success or failure of instituting these new quality initiatives would be very apparent in the coming monthsafter implementation. The results would be able to be seen through the look and feel of stores, increased employee
retention and annual revenue reports.I was able to come upon my recommendations through my extensive knowledge of the inner workings of TheStore bybeing a former employee and the knowledge this class has provided me with. I see that TheStore has had and still hasplenty of opportunities to become a leader in the retail business. With large financial backings of XYZ HoldingsCorporation and a quality management system, TheStore would be able to reclaim its hold on the retail market. Both Lean Principles and Total Quality Management systems will address the issues that have been plaguing TheStoreand causing losses in the form of customers, employees and profits. Both management systems would allow TheStoreto focus on its key areas of business. It would allow for them to maximize their profits by spending money. One of theunfortunate sides of business is that you must be willing to spend money to make money, TheStore has forgotten this. The quality management systems will provide the company with a direction in which to properly spend money toachieve a maximum return on profit. The lack of employees has produced an initial increase in monetary savings but theprolonged effects of not having adequate employees will yield a large decrease in the revenues over an extended periodof time, due to customer dissatisfaction with stores and services.TheStore has no formal training or continuing education for hourly employees and or members of management. Thishas led to unexperiencedworkforce that is not capable of handling all the aspects of business. This shows that all theemployees and stakeholders of the corporation are viewed at as being expendable by the corporation. If the company isnot willing to provide customers and employees with the tools necessary to maintain a positive relationship thecompany will fail. TheStore has been on the decline for years with decreased customer satisfaction and profitsgenerated.RecommendationsMy recommendation for TheStore is to start using a quality management initiative. The results would be able to be seen through the look and feel of stores, increased employeeretention and annual revenue reports.I was able to come upon my recommendations through my extensive knowledge of the inner workings of TheStore bybeing a former employee and the knowledge this class has provided me with. I see that TheStore has had and still hasplenty of opportunities to become a leader in the retail business. With large financial backings of XYZ HoldingsCorporation and a quality management system, TheStore would be able to reclaim its hold on the retail market.

The quality management systems will allow the voices of bnotice a lack of employees manning the store. If you have a question about a product good luck trying to huntsomeone down to assist you with your inquiry. Often times you will feel as if you are the only one in the store. This isdue to the fact that TheStore has trimmed the company employees down below an acceptable level for conductingnormal business operations. TheStore has been on the decline for years with decreased customer satisfaction and profitsgenerated.

This isdue to the fact that TheStore has trimmed the company employees down below an acceptable level for conductingnormal business operations. TheStore has been on the decline for years with decreased customer satisfaction and profitsgenerated.Recommendations
My recommendation for TheStore is to start using a quality management initiative.
Under the perpetual system, there are continual updates to the cost of goods sold account as each sale is made. Conversely, under the periodic inventory systWhat is the difference between the periodic and perpetual inventory systems?

inventory journal as inventory-related transactions occur.
Under the perpetual system, there are continual updates to the cost of goods sold account as each sale is made. Conversely, under the periodic inventory systWhat is the difference between the periodic and perpetual inventory systems?
The periodic and perpetual inventory systems are different methods used to track the quantity of
goods on hand. The more sophisticated of the two is the perpetual system, but it requires much more
record keeping to maintain.
The periodic system relies upon an occasional physical count of the inventory to determine the ending
inventory balance and the cost of goods sold, while the perpetual system keeps continual track of
inventory balances. There are a number of other differences between the two systems, which are as

Conversely,

inventories.

If you have a question about a product good luck trying to huntsomeone down to assist you with your inquiry. Often times you will feel as if you are the only one in the store. This isdue to the fact that TheStore has trimmed the company employees down below an acceptable level for conductingnormal business operations. TheStore has been on the decline for years with decreased customer satisfaction and profitsgenerated.Recommendations
My recommendation for TheStore is to start using a quality management initiative. TheStore has been on the decline for years with decreased customer satisfaction and profitsgenerated.Recommendations
My recommendation for TheStore is to start using a quality management initiative. The quality management systems will allow the voices of bnotice a lack of employees manning the store.
