Baby Boomers can learn a lot from centenarians. When cen-tenarians were recently asked about “the secrets of aging suc-cess” as part of the “100@100 Survey,” nearly 90% indicated that they communicated with family and friends daily; more
than two-thirds said that they prayed, medi-tated, or engaged in spiritual activity; and over half revealed that they exercised daily. While Boomers match up pretty well with the cente-narians in all these aspects, most do not sleep as long or eat as well as the centenarians surveyed. Seventy-one percent of centenarians surveyed say they sleep at least eight hours nightly (ver-sus only 38% of Boomers), and 80% of cente-narians say they regularly eat a balanced meal (compared with just 68% of Baby Boomers). LONGEVITY ADVICE FOR BOOMERS
Estate planning is not just for older or wealthy
people. Life is uncertain and young individuals and couples, especially those with minor children, should create a plan in case of a debilitating accident or untimely death. Your estate plan should have a Health Care Proxy that nominates an individual to make medical decisions for you in the event you are unable. Similarly, most plans should include a Durable Power of At-torney to allow your spouse or another person to manage your finances and sign legal documents on your behalf. Without these documents, a court would need to appoint a guardian and/or con-servator to make these crucial decisions for you. Th e time and expense involved with petitioning the court to appoint a guardian and conservator can be avoided by simple planning. It is also a good policy to setup
Even Young Families Need an Estate Planat least a basic Will that puts someone in charge of settling your estate (your Personal Representative), names your beneficiaries, and designates a guardian and/or conservator for your minor children to care for them and their inheri-tance. Additionally, it is often wise to create a family trust to manage property designated for your minor children. Without a Will, if
both you and the other parent of your children are gone, a court will decide who will raise your minor children and who will manage their fi nances. Most individuals would prefer to decide these issues for themselves. Planning now can help protect your family when they will need it most.
