Engage: Let’s Recap Engage: Let’s Recap PhotosynthesisPhotosynthesis
Plants absorb sunlight and use its energy to grow directly.
Autotrophic plants use chloroplasts, and the process of photosynthesis, to capture the energy from sunlight and store it by creating sugar (glucose) molecules.1. Write out the chemical equation
for photosynthesis. Using the magazines supplied, cut out pictures/symbols that can represent the reactants and products of photosynthesis.
However…However…
It is important for you to realize that photosynthesis alone can not sustain life.
Plants, or other living things, can not stay alive if this was all that happened. Remember, glucose is like a storage house for energy, storing the chemical energy obtained from the sun.
How is all of this energy released from storage???
EXPLORE: CELLULAR EXPLORE: CELLULAR RESPIRATIONRESPIRATION
Respiration releases the chemical energy stored in glucose, which is used by the cells to carry out their life activities (growing, moving, etc.).
2.Create a labeled diagram showing how photosynthesis and respiration are related using pictures cut out from a magazine.
Sunlight (radiant energy)is Transformed through the process of Photosynthesis in Green Plants Transforming the radiant energy into GLUCOSE (chemical energy)which can be Respired by Plants & Animals to Transform chemical energy Into other formsRequired to continue living.
RESPIRATIONRESPIRATION
– Respiration is NOT the same as
what we call breathing!– Respiration is a chemical
reaction…
3. Write out what you think the equation for respiration
looks like.
