3Academy focuses on physical, emotional wellnessBy F. AMANDA [email protected]

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Acad-emy of Early Learning has taken anew approach to harnessing a healthylifestyle by challenging its faculty, stu-dents and their families to take partin Gimme Five, a challenge from FirstLady Michelle Obama’s fitness cam-paign, “Let’s Move.”

Early childhood teachers DanaNaffziger and Leslie Mueller decidedto accept the challenge and create asummer curriculum that encouragedmembers of their school communityto participate. The two also decided toinclude just one more bit – how can stu-dents demonstrate good character?

Elmhurst Academy’s philosophycenters on a project-based method todevelop and enhance physical, socialand emotional skills, Naffziger said. She added the philosophy embodiescommunication as a crucial constructto building balanced relationshipswith oneself, one’s peers and one’s fam-ily, and that’s what they hope to accom-plish with the Gimme Five challenge.

Naffziger explained their summerschool program runs from June to Au-gust, and she and Mueller devised eachmonth to concentrate on individual, partner and team tasks.

The two said these include varioustypes of activities that develop hand-eye coordination and balance throughcatching or kicking a ball to one an-other, as well as learning how to worktogether to accomplish a goal.

A large aspect of this project is thatthe students are in charge of coming upwith challenges for their peers, teach-ers and parents, Naffziger and Muellersaid.

This allows them not only to usetheir critical thinking skills but also totake ownership in receiving the chal-lenges and performing them, Naffzigersaid.

For the week of June 30, MichellePike and her infant class challengedMueller and her preschool-aged classto give high-fives to five differentfriends, which primarily encompasses

good sportsmanship and targets socialdevelopment skills. In return, the in-fants were challenged to look at picturebooks for five seconds, aimed at devel-oping their literary skills.

Lisa Dillard and her kindergartenclass received a similar assignment andwere asked to give compliments to fivefriends, family members or teachers.

Mona Webber and Naffziger’s tod-dler-aged classes received missionsthat helped them touch base withtheir bodies and their environment.Naffziger’s class, who already weretaking advantage of a perfect summerday with a beach-like activity, tooksome time to complete their exercise,

which entailed jumping in five differ-ent ways, while Webber’s class went ona short nature hike around the acade-my’s garden and playground to collectfive nature items.

Mueller said another importantcomponent to completing these activ-ities is documenting them throughphotos and video and sharing themwith parents, as well as other stu-

dents, faculty and staff. But there’s someone else Naffziger

and Mueller would like to share thesephotos and videos with – the first ladyherself.

Mueller said at the end of the sum-mer, they intend to showcase theirjourney in one video, send it to herand “challenge her to give five minutesof her time” to take a look at their ac-complishment so far in achieving goodhealth and wellness.

“It’s a big dream,” Mueller said.“But we take it to heart that we are rolemodels, and we want to show our stu-dents that if you dream big, anythingis possible.”

Elmhurst bar gets quite the surprise

By F. AMANDA [email protected]

ELMHURST – Steve Riley was infor the surprise of a lifetime when hereceived a text from his brother thatPatrick Kane and the Stanley Cupwere on their way June 27 to their fam-ily-owned restaurant and bar, Riley’sGathering Place, on York Street.

“I thought my brother was just mess-ing with me,” Riley said, adding he de-cided to show up just to make sure.

When Riley entered the bar thatnight, there were about 30 peoplethere, but as soon as Kane and his crewof friends arrived in a limo bus, thecrowd nearly tripled, he said.

Kane, his friends and the StanleyCup had just come from a Jimmy Buf-fett concert in Tinley Park. The Black-hawks star sported appropriate Buffettattire, complete with a parrot-head hatand a Hawaiian shirt, Riley said.

He said one member of Kane’s groupbrought the cup inside the bar, placedit on a table and let Blackhawks fans

take photos with the coveted prize. Before Kane was swallowed by an

enormous crowd of friends and fans,Riley was able to snag a photo withhim. He and his wife, Debbie, also wereable to get a photo with the cup, he said.

Another surprise Kane had in storefor fans that night was his karaoke ren-

dition of Tom Petty’s song “Free Fallin.’”“It was pretty neat,” Riley said.Riley said Riley’s Gathering Place is

a “big Blackhawks bar,” and the familybought the bar from former Blackhawksplayer Grant Mulvey. Throughout theyears, players such as Bobby Hull andJeremy Roenick have made trips tothe 26-year-old neighborhood establish-ment, Riley said.

“It’s still so surreal,” he said. After Kane’s visit, visitors came the

next day and bombarded Riley withquestions. It’s a story he wants to share.

“It’s amazing how word gets out,”Riley said.

Elmhurst resident celebratesCamp I AmMe’s 25th anniversary

By F. AMANDA [email protected]

ELMHURST – Jackie Bafaro was8 years old when she suffered fromthird-degree burns on half of her face, her stomach and her chest from an in-cident that involved scalding hot water.

Bafaro said after spending aboutthree months in an induced coma andrecuperating at Loyola UniversityMedical Center, she met staff memberswho told her about Camp I Am Me, asummer camp in Ingleside for childrenand teenagers with burn injuries.

For the past 13 years, Bafaro, now 21and a newly appointed camp counsel-or, has spent a week of her summer atthe camp, learning and teaching othersthis valuable lesson: “It’s OK to be dif-ferent. Our scars don’t define us.”

That’s the message Camp I Am Mewas built on 25 years ago, and Elm-hurst resident Terry Pluta, a retiredNorthlake firefighter, knew that wouldbe its driving force.

The camp celebrated its 25th anni-versary and honored staff memberssuch as Pluta with its social mediacampaign, 25+ Faces for 25 Years.

The long-time camp volunteer tookpart in starting the summer camp in1991. At the time, the only place that waslike Camp I Am Me was in Colorado, which is miles away from the victims’Illinois-based homes, he explained.

Collaborating with the Illinois FireSafety Alliance, an organization basedin Mount Prospect, Pluta and othersbegan to work together to provide aspace for children and teenagers to justbe themselves as they entered throughdifferent personal stages of recovery, acceptance and healing. Pluta recalledthe camp started out with about 40 chil-dren and just enough staff membersand counselors.

At the time, the camp had dirt roadsand cabins without air condition-ing. With the help of volunteers and

Park District to buildPlayground for Everyone

By F. AMANDA [email protected]

ELMHURST – The purpose ofa playground is quite simple: It’s aplace where kids can just be kids. It’s a place where they can gather, play, learn how to interact with oneanother and, most important, buildfriendships.

For all children, inclusivity isimportant in crafting those relation-ships with each other, and that’swhat the Elmhurst Park Districthopes to achieve with the concept ofthe Playground for Everyone, a ren-ovation of the Butterfield Park Play-ground expected to be completed infall 2016.

Ginger Wade, marketing and com-munications director of the ElmhurstPark District, explained the park dis-trict has an obligation to redevelopparks every 18 years, and in 2016, theButterfield Park Playground is nextin line.

The district chose to convert thisparticular park into a “playgroundfor everyone” because it is spacious, has an existing parking lot and re-strooms, and is near accessible majorstreets in York Street and ButterfieldRoad, Wade said.

It won’t look a lot different from atypical playground, but it does pro-vide different opportunities of playfor everyone, said Jim Rogers, Elm-hurst Park District executive direc-tor.

Rogers explained parks in the El-mhurst community have some fea-tures that accommodate childrenwith special needs such as a slide or aramp that is large enough for a childusing a wheelchair to use, but thatdoesn’t leave enough room for thatchild’s friend to run alongside himor her.

In addition, the playground will

have amenities that will cater to chil-dren with visual, hearing and othersensory issues, Wade said.

While the new playground willinclude various play structures withneeded physical adjustments, such asa zip line and teeter-totters with con-toured seats and appropriate handles,“cozy” shaded areas are designedfor children with sensory issues as aplace for them to retreat.

The park district already has part-nered with local organizations Spe-cial Kids Day, People for ElmhurstParks Foundation and the ElmhurstKiwanis Club for fundraising sup-port.

Special Kids Day Chairman RichRosenberg said the new playgroundlooks past just fulfilling ADA require-ments and becomes a place for chil-dren with and without special needsto “coexist, cointegrate and mingle”together.

The total cost of the project is$550,000. Rogers said the park dis-trict has set aside $300,000 from tax-es and revenue for the constructionof a typical playground, and the re-maining $250,000 is expected to comefrom donations from local organiza-tions, individual donors and grantfunding.

So far, the park district has raisedabout $55,000 and has a long way to go,Wade said.

Rogers added aside from the

Greetings! I am not sure that it has sunk in yet. I have beenasked to serve as the next superintendent of Elmhurst District 205!

Since I left college coaching and returned to EC-12 educationin 1998, I have consciously pursued a path to become a publicschool superintendent. Since my grandmother lived in a farsouthwest suburb of Chicago, which was mostly a cornfieldthen, I told everybody I knewthat I was going to live inChicago someday.

As coincidence would haveit, my first position uponreturning to public educationwas in a far northwest suburb.Until recently, my familystationed ourselves there for agood period of time, and, now,I have a dream job – a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – Ihave been invited to come toElmhurst. Grandma, I made it!

So, what’s next? Well, inlarge part, you will all tell me.We will have dialogue aboutwhat it means to raise the barand close the achievementgap for all students. We willcome to consensus on a plan ofattack for how to continue tomake District 205 schools a bea-con of educational excellence. And, if all goes according to plan, we will become a model districtnationally, sharing our successes for all to see and emulate.

If we are truly committed to this ideal, it will not necessar-ily be easy in this knowledge-driven, rapidly changing, globalworld. But, boy, will it ever be worth it!

First things first. I have to say thank you for the opportuni-ty to serve. With a community that supports its public schoolsand a board of education and team of teachers and administra-tors that share in a common vision of excellence, the rest willtake care of itself. As Bob Dylan sings in “When I Paint MyMasterpiece,” “Someday everything is gonna be smooth like arhapsody, when I paint my masterpiece.”

David Moyer is the superintendent of Elmhurst CommunityUnit School District 205.

OUR VIEW

The mighty struggle underway over theIllinois state budget is eerily similar to thegame of chess. The comparison is both aptand sad.

The opponents are the entrenched Demo-crats, led by House Speaker Michael Madi-gan and Senate President John Cullerton, versus first-year Gov. Bruce Rauner and theminority Republicans. They represent thekings, queens, knights, bishops and rooks onthe chess board.

And the 12.8 million other Illinoisans?Well, if you’ve ever felt like a pawn in thegreat budgetary battle, join the club.

In chess, pawns are manipulated toadvance the interests of the major pieces.Pawns don’t matter much in the grandscheme of things. They are routinely im-periled and sacrificed to benefit the morepowerful chess pieces.

Likewise, in the budget battle, averagecitizens are manipulated to advance theinterests of the politicians. If the public isimperiled by budgetary proposals and brink-manship, it’s no real concern to the leader-ship class.

The object of chess is to use one’s intelli-gence and experience to defeat the opponent.

The same goes for politics, which unfor-tunately carries over into governance, andwhich is the crux of the budget battle: Willthe state continue to live beyond its means,or not?

The budget approved by the Democratswould spend $3 billion to $4 billion more thanit takes in. Democratic leaders did that onpurpose to pressure Rauner to approve tax

increases to cover the difference. For his part, Rauner doesn’t like the

chronic overspending, vetoed most of thebudget June 25, and awaits the arrival ofDemocrats at the bargaining table to negoti-ate for what he wants: some “pro-business”legislation and structural reforms to govern-ment that would weaken Democrats’ stran-glehold on power.

He previously announced more than $800million in temporary cuts that are set to kickin with the new fiscal year that starts thisweek.

What are the pawns’ roles in all of this?Average Illinoisans have spoken up abouthow proposed budget cuts would negativelyaffect them. Some have done so on their own;others have been trotted out by politicians.Either way, their stories are compelling.

Senior citizens, the poor, those withphysical and mental disabilities and otherswho rely on state funding are imperiled. Theuncertainty is difficult to bear.

In chess, pawns do have one golden op-portunity to triumph. If a pawn can advanceto the end of the board, it wins a powerfulpromotion and gains great influence. Theopposing player tries to stop that from hap-pening at all costs.

In Illinois’ budgetary endgame, Illinoisansmust put politicians in check and exert theircombined influence to demand that fiscalprudence and the best interests of the peoplebe part of the new budget.

For politicians who just don’t get it, thepublic can deal with them at next election.

Checkmate.

Illinois residents are pawnsin a giant state chess game

I have to say thank youfor the opportunity toserve. With a communitythat supports its publicschools, and a Boardof Education andteam of teachers andadministrators that sharein a common vision ofexcellence, the rest willtake care of itself.

EYE SAFETY ATWORKEach day, approximately 2,000 U.S. workers sustain a job-related eye injury thatrequires medical treatment. The majority of these injuries result from small particlesor objects striking or abrading the eye. To guard against these preventable injuries, workers should wear safety eyewear whenever there is any chance that machinesor operations present the hazard of chemicals, flying objects, or other potentiallyharmful situations. Industrial-thickness glass, plastic, and polycarbonate lenses meetor exceed the requirements of the eye protection standard. While glass lenses providegood scratch resistance and can accommodate a broad range of prescriptions, polycarbonate lenses are lighter in weight and are superior to glass and many otherplastics in terms of strength and impact resistance.Safety glasses may have prescription lenses or non-prescription lenses. The opticalboutique at SKOWRON EYE CARE is available to accommodate all of your eyewearneeds. We offer the latest in frame styles and lens technology at competitive pricesand can provide the thinnest, lightest, most smudge and scratch resistant lenses tofit almost any style frame you desire. We’re invested in the technology to make examfindings easier and more accurate from toddlers to seniors. At Skowron Eye Care, ourmission is your vision.P.S. Protective eyewear should be selected for its appropriateness for a given task.

SOUND OFFNorth Elmhurst hasflooding problems, tooIn the last few years, Elmhurst has

made the news as one of the worstflooded areas every time we getextensive rain. The paper is filled witharticles about how the city will resolvethese issues on the south side of town. There is talk of relief ... , home buyoutprograms and more town meetings. Myquestion is, what will be done for thehomes north of [Interstate] 290? LakeStreet and Emroy become a parking lotas the side streets become swimmingpools. Our homes flood as much, if notmore, as other areas, and yet there is noplan in place that I have read about toalleviate the problem on the north sideof town.

Who will clean up COD?There are powerful interests at College

of DuPage who lost much and havemuch more to lose. Solution: Destroy themessenger, Chairwoman Kathy Hamil-ton. The board policies on campaigningdo not have the force of law and areunenforceable. Board policy does nottrump First Amendment protections.COD trustees are not paid, hence, thecharge of campaigning using compen-sated time should be seen for what it is,a blatant attempt at political payback.Keep fighting for us, Kathy.

Correct use of pesticide andherbicide is not harmfulStop poisoning the environment? As

a professional in the green industry, Iwould like to say that any fertilizer, pesti-cide or herbicide that is used correctly isnot toxic to the environment. That is whyprofessionals are required to have a statespraying license where they learn whatconditions are safe to spray in, expo-sure protection and correct applicationrates. The chemicals you breathe, ingest

and touch are everywhere – processedfoods, makeup, sunscreen, deodorantsand shampoos, just to name a few, and Ithink people are exposed to those thingsmore on a day-to-day basis rather thanpesticides and fertilizers.

Share the road with bicyclistsI commute to work on my bicycle.

About one-fourth of my commute followsbike paths. I happily take that routebecause the other three-quarters I amforced to share the road with motoristswho feel my existence in their world isan insult to them. I follow the rules of theroad and yet I have angry drivers try andrun me over. The law says share the road.I will share it with you. Will you share itwith me?

Man-caused global warmingis not ‘settled science’The idea of man-caused global warming

is often presented as some sort of scien-tific consensus. We even see the usageof the term “settled science” as thoughno more questioning is to be tolerated.... the very concept of “settled science”is strange and contradicts the natureof science, which invites questioningof so-called established knowledge andrecognizes that all conclusions have aprobability that they are wrong. To treatan explanation as perfect and absoluteis to move into the field of faith andreligion. Science is not revealed truthpresided over by the almighty. But, it is avery human process that invites criticismand continual challenge.

This year, the camp host-ed 64 children and teenagersand had about 70 full-time andpart-time counselors. Over theyears, the number of attendeeshas fluctuated, but camp lead-ers have made sure to developstaff that can accommodate allof their needs, Pluta said.

Moving forward with thisproject 25 years ago called forthe community to come togeth-er, and that has been the key

to the camp’s overall success,he said. Over the years, teach-ers, firefighters, police officersand medical personnel acrossIllinois have volunteered andoffered different services infulfilling this summer experi-ence for the campers.

Dotty Abhe, an adminis-trator and school teacher inNorthlake, has worked along-side Pluta for more than 25years. Even before their vol-unteer work together at thecamp, Abhe and Pluta teamedup and revamped curriculumfor helping teachers and stu-dents learn about fire safety.

The two said while thecamp helps children move for-ward and see past their ownscars, having platforms toraise safety awareness is cru-cial to prevention.

“We don’t know the fireswe prevent,” Pluta said. “Weonly know the ones we don’t.”

Randy Ahlgrim, a retiredfirefighter and paramedicin Addison, also has workedalongside Pluta at the campsince its inception.

Both Pluta and Ahlgrimsaid they remember howthey first felt when interact-ing with the children and the

teenagers at the camp.“Do I hug them? Shake

their hand?” Pluta said.PlutaandAhlgrimexplained

as firefighters they were onlyconcerned about two things:getting victims to safety andhelping them receive propermedical attention immediately. As volunteers at the camp, thetwo were able to play an activerole in the campers’ lives, buildthat friendship and be a part oftheir support system.

Piscataway, N.J. – The Chicago Red Starsdefended their spot at the top of the NWSL tablewith a commanding 3-0 away win over Sky BlueFC on Sunday night. Vanessa DiBernardo, Jen Hoyand Alyssa Mautz all scored for Chicago, with Hoyadding an assist on Mautz’ second-half tally. Thematch also featured a pair of assists by 22-year-oldHuerta and outstanding play by defender AbbyErceg, who made her return to the Red Stars line-up after captaining New Zealand in the 2015 FIFAWomen’s World Cup. Chicago goalkeeper MicheleDalton earned her third clean sheet of the seasonbehind an all-around solid performance. The Red Stars seized the lead in just the sixth min-ute of play. Huerta sprinted into the box on the leftand battled to maintain possession before smartlycentering to DiBernardo, who coolly sidesteppedgoalkeeper Brittany Cameron for the openingstrike. Sky Blue FC had an opportunity to levelthe score a mere four minutes later, but ShawnaGordon’s left-footed shot from the top of the areawent just over the frame. After three brilliant defensive plays in a row byChicago’s Erceg, the 25-year-old center back wasin the right spot again to block a 21st-minute crossfrom the right by Sky Blue FC’s Meg Morris. How-ever, the interception fell right to Katie Freels, whonearly put away the opportunity with a left-footedattempt that rattled the crossbar. The home side had another chance to tie thematch at the half-hour mark, as Taylor Lytle wasin on goal off a beautiful through ball from deepinside her own half, only to have Red Stars outsideback Arin Gilliland catch up and force her wide. While the rookie’s hustle allowed Erceg andSamantha Johnson to recover, Lytle still managedto get a shot off, firing across goal and just wide ofthe far post from the left side of the area.In the 34th minute, Chicago made their opponentspay dearly for the missed opportunities with abeautiful combination play doubling the lead forHead Coach Rory Dames’ side. Rachel Quon tookfull advantage of a breakaway by releasing Huertadown the center, and the rookie sensation unself-ishly slid the ball through to Hoy for a simple tap-infrom the mouth of the goal.

Sky Blue FC started off the second half on the rightfoot, as Freels put Danish international Nadia Nad-im through on goal, but Red Stars keeper MicheleDalton left her feet for an exceptional block onthe powerful driven effort. That set the stage forChicago to increase their lead just after the hourmark. Danielle Colaprico’s long ball into the attackfound Hoy entering the box with time on herhands, picking out Mautz for a right-footed shotthat took a slight deflection and trickled inside theleft upright. In the 66th minute of the competition, Huertanearly added a fourth for her squad when sheexploited some indecisive defending by toe-pok-ing the ball away from Maya Hayes and tookunleashed a shot on frame to force a diving stopby Cameron.Idaho native Huerta continued to wreak havoc inthe closing stages of the match, dribbling past twodefenders on the left side of the box and firingfrom close range, only for Cameron to produce apoint-blank reaction save. The rebound fell intothe path of Rachel Quon, whose low attempt ongoal forced another diving save from the Sky BlueFC goalkeeper.Lytle had a chance to pull one back for the hosts, her strong shot from the top of the penalty areawhistling just over the bar. Shorty after that, herteammate Nadia Nadim nearly scored what wouldhave been a certain candidate for Goal of the Year.On a stoppage-time corner kick from the right, thestriker tracked back to meet the ball near the edgeof the box and smashed it off the crossbar by wayof a spectacular bicycle kick. It would be the finalopportunity of the night, as Chicago held on for itsfifth victory of 2015.The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars look tomake it consecutive wins when they travel totake on Houston Dash on July 12. The team’snext home game is a July 18 meeting withBoston Breakers at Benedictine University in Lisle.Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 RedStars campaign may be purchased by calling773-698-6001 or by visiting www.chicagoredstars.com/tickets.

VILLA PARK – A knockon some eateries is that theyoffer so many menu items, the cooking staff can neverreally master any of them. It’sprecisely the opposite at BabaKaram.

With a focus on MiddleEastern fare, the restaurantin Villa Park keeps the menusimple, and, in the process, has clearly perfected its craft.

I stopped by Baba Karamon a recent evening with adining companion. Hungry forsome protein, I was hankeringfor something with beef orchicken.

But first, to whet our appe-tite, we started with a hum-mus appetizer. The smooth, tasty dip, based on chickpeasand tahini sauce, was filledwith flavor, and made theaccompanying pita breaddisappear quickly. Our serverasked if we needed more pita, but it turned out that the por-tions matched up perfectly.

For our entrees, we bothzeroed in on the main sec-tion of the menu: the kabobs.Chicken, ground beef, lambshank and a few differentpreparations of filet mignonwere offered.

I went for the one labeled“barg,” described as thinlysliced filet mignon marinatedin saffron and spice. My com-panion opted for the bonelesschicken, similarly marinatedin saffron. We both ordered thedill rice; the other sides avail-able were white rice and shi-razi salad. The latter featurescucumber, tomato and onionin a dressing of olive oil, blackpepper, lime juice and mint.

I definitely had myhankering for some meatfulfilled, and then some. Thefilet mignon was as deliciousand tender as I expected, andI probably wolfed it downquicker than is strictly ac-ceptable for a nice restaurant.Fortunately for me, my diningcompanion loved her chickenkabob but couldn’t finish theserving, so I got to sample asizable portion of that entree, too. As terrific as the bargkabob was, I think the chicken

might have been even better, really capturing the flavor ofthe saffron and bursting withjuices.

Featuring an attractiveinterior, Baba Karam is in oneof Villa Park’s several com-mercial districts on St. CharlesRoad. The ambiance is relaxed, with gentle Middle Easternmusic playing, and an atten-tive staff that never lets yourcup stay empty for too long.

There are a number ofother appetizers offered inaddition to the hummus, and

several salads available, too.But for sure, kabobs are theprimary attraction. Unless

you’re a vegetarian, it wouldbe a shame to leave the restau-rant without trying one.

LEMONT – The past year has beena whirlwind for Scott Darling after theLemont native signed with the Chica-go Blackhawks on July 1, 2014.

Having made a variety of stops onthe minor league circuit, the 26-yearold got his first call-up to the NHL onOct. 26 and was the winning goalie in a2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators.

Darling went on to play in 14 regu-lar season games before seeing actionin five postseason contests in the open-ing round against Nashville, where henotched three wins. His performancehelped the Blackhawks advance to thesecond round and ultimately capturetheir third Stanley Cup in the past sixseasons.

In the process, the 6-foot-6 goaliebecame the first Chicago-area bornplayer to have his name etched on thecup as a member of the Blackhawks.

On June 29, Darling brought thecup to his former hometown andput it on display at the Lemont ParkDistrict. Staff writer Scott Schmid waspart of a press conference at whichDarling spoke about the experience inLemont and what it has been like to bea part of a Stanley Cup champion.

What has the last couple of weeks beenlike and has it sunk in that you are a StanleyCup Champion?

Darling: It’s been crazy since we’vewon. We’ve done a lot of great stuff, like

going to Wrigley Field and going to seeMumford & Sons. And now this is myday to share the cup with my home-town and with my family and friends.

Once it all winds down a little bit, Ican relax and just reflect, maybe turnmy phone off for a few days and enjoyit for a little bit.

What’s the last year been like?Darling: The whole year, from start to

finish, like I’ve said before, it was suchan honor to sign with the team and I wasthrilled to be on the [Rockford] Ice Hogs. Then to get the opportunity with Chica-go and to have a role in the playoffs andwinning the cup, it’s been unbelievable.

To get to bring the cup back to Lemont, how special is that?

Darling: This is where I spent alot of my life, these are the streetswhere I use to ride my bike. To seehow excited the people are, it meansa lot. I never forgot where I camefrom. I call this home, I always havemy whole life. I played Little Leaguehere, I played for the Lemont Indi-ans. I was [just like] those kids outthere, and to see them all here, it’sexciting.

I’ve had my opportunity with thecup last week with the team. This isa great opportunity to share it witheveryone else.

How did your new tattoo of the StanleyCup come about?

Darling: I’m a fan of tattoos. I alwayswanted an excuse to get a StanleyCup tattoo and now I have a greatone.

What is your mindset heading into nextseason?

Darling: I’m hungry as ever. I want tostay here, I want to be here for a longtime. I’ll take a couple of weeks offand then a couple of weeks later, theseason will start. I’m excited to get tocamp and I still have to earn my spotfor next year.
