Adorama: What factors are important to you when deciding to buy new equipment?

Z&J: When we are buying new gear, we always consider the brand (is it a trusted brand), the durability (can it stand the test of travel and getting knocked around a bit) and reviews (we want to know first-hand if others have loved the product).

A: Has there ever been a time you’ve said, “We’d have never gotten that shot without that gear?”

Z&J: Most definitely! With weddings you have to shoot with the given circumstances – there’s no rescheduling. When we have off-camera lighting (like the Rapid Box) we are able to nail extremely hard to get images with ease. If we hadn’t had it at a gig last year where the bride and groom had their first dance, outdoors, just after sunset, we would never have gotten the shot.

A: What’s the most surprising thing that’s ever happened to you on a shoot?

Z&J: At one wedding in 2007, Zach dislocated his shoulder (wasn’t funny at the time) and rolled our new Canon 5D and Canon 24-70L lens across the concrete ground. One of the bridesmaids came over and popped his shoulder back in - she happened to be a doctor and saved the day for us! It was a rough shoot, but we made it through. a
