In an ideal world, animal sanctuaries wouldn’t exist. Animals wouldn’t be abandoned, injured or cast off by reckless individuals or industries. As president of The Fund for Animals, I long for the day when animal sanctuaries are no longer needed.

Unfortunately, they are needed now more than ever. Staff at our Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch receive calls like these every day: A family needs to find a home for their “pet” monkey who has become aggressive; an endangered antelope bred for captive hunts will be killed by the highest bidder; chimpanzees from laboratories need placement because they weren’t useful in experiments; horses and donkeys are destined for slaughter; and tigers living in the deplorable conditions of a roadside zoo need immediate rescue and shelter. These stories are a mere glimpse of what is asked of just one sanctuary.

That’s why we are not only rescuing animals in crisis, but also working to prevent cruelty and stop the root causes of abuse. We can only continue this important work because of the generosity of wonderful supporters like you. I want to personally thank you for visiting today, learning about our work and joining us in our fight to help animals in need.

Sincerely,

Michael MarkarianPresident, The Fund for Animals

Wildlife ProtectionWe work to protect wildlife from captive hunting, the fur trade, the exotic pet trade, Canada’s commercial seal slaughter, horse slaughter, habitat loss, urbaniza-tion and more. Equine Protection We fight to safeguard the welfare of horses, burros and donkeys. We work to end cruelty and abuse, horse slaughter and irresponsible breeding while encouraging responsible horse ownership and providing support and resources to the horse rescue community. Farm Animal ProtectionWe work on many fronts to protect farm animals from some of the most egregious abuses on factory farms. In the last decade, we’ve seen significant reforms in the way farm animals are treated, both in the U.S. and abroad. Primate Protection We encourage and advance innovations to replace the use of animals in scientific research. Until such alternatives are available, we will work to reduce the number of animals used and refine research to decrease animal suffering. Companion Animal Protection We know pets are important parts of your family. We help you enjoy your furry and winged companions and solve any problems that prevent you both from purring. And we can also show you how to improve the lives of the com-panion animals next door, in shelters and on the streets.

ALEXANDERAlexander was part of an exotic pet rescue in Atchison, Kansas. He was one of about a dozen dangerous wild animals who had been aban-doned by their owner—left without food or water in cages that were inadequate in size and

security. Alexander is now being cared for in a safe environ-ment at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch.

SAHARASahara was saved from an Illinois slaughter-house in April 2007. She was one of thousands of horses who are targeted every year for slaughter to meet the demand for horse meat in Europe and Asia. Sahara now lives a peaceful

and secure life at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch.

PENELOPEPenelope is a pot-bellied pig who was found wandering down a street by animal control after her owners abandoned her. Penelope now spends her days foraging for tasty goodies and wallowing in her favorite mud pool at the

Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch.

MIDGEMidge was rescued from a research facility where he lived for 22 years. During that time, he spent nine years confined to a cage and was routinely infected with Hepatitis B and other live viruses. Midge is now a member of our chimp family at

the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, where he enjoys play-ing with magazines and racing around his enclosure.

HANNAH SHIRLEYHannah Shirley—a 40-year-old Pygmy Hippo—was discovered in 2002 living illegally in the suburban backyard of a private citizen. Luckily for Hannah Shirley, she was rescued and trans-ported to The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center,

where she has a 13,000 square-foot paddock, complete with a swimming pool and a natural pond to play in.

The Fund For Animals

The Fund for Animals was founded in

1967 by prominent author and animal

advocate Cleveland Amory. For 37 years,

The Fund has spearheaded some of the

most significant events in the history

of the animal protection movement

by employing hard-hitting advocacy

campaigns and operating animal care

facilities like the Cleveland Amory

Black Beauty Ranch. The Fund’s historic

victories have saved thousands of

animals from cruelty and suffering.
