Over 4.3 million

immigrants moved to the United

States between 1841 and 1860.

✢ Lack of extended family.

✢ Children as young as six working.

The population of New York City in 1850

reached about 500,000 due to the influx of

immigrants. Between 10,000 and 30,000 of

these residents were homeless kids.Bureau of Consular Affairs, U.S. Department of State. | “Need for the Orphan Trains.” Orphan Train Complex: Preserving

Started by the

Sisters of Charity in

1869 with $5 to their

name and a white

cradle in the foyer.

On the evening of the same day it opened, it

received its first infant, and forty-four others

followed before the end of the first month. After two

years, The Foundling had received 2,500 babies.

Between 1854 and

1929, as many as

250,000 children from

the East traveled on the

Orphan Trains.

Who do you think

would be chosen

by the families?

n the world.

An address will be made by the

agent. Come and see the children

and hear the address. “Distribution

will take place at the Opera House

Friday, Feb. 25th at 1:30 P.M.”

The term orphan train was avoided

because less than half of the

children were truly orphans. Most

had at least one living parent.

• Roughly 1 in 25 Americans are connected to Orphan Train Riders

through family, friends, neighbors, etc.

• Children's Aid Society estimated that 90% of placements were

successful. (Deemed successful if the child didn’t run away or ask

to be moved.)

• Today, we estimate 60 - 70% of placements were successful with the

other 30 - 40% being used as free labor.

Accurate Adoption Language

Spencer, M. (2005). Adoption Vocabulary: a guide to correct terminology.In: C. Marshner, & W, Pierce (Eds.), Adoption

Fact book III. Waite Park,MN; Park Press Quality Printing Inc.

Nurses need to be cognizant of accurate

adoption language in the care of families.

Words not only communicate facts but they also

evoke feelings. The words used to address

adoption can be emotionally charged and may

be used inappropriately.
