What is Adopt-A-Highway

Organizations in return for litter removal from the highway are allowed to post their club or groups name on the highway sign. Basically they are given the right to “own” the highway if they take care of it.

This program supports environmental protection through communal projects, that let everyday citizens provide a helping hand.

Oakton’s Octagon Club

I was president of Oakton’s Octagon club throughout my high school career. Our club was dedicated to community service, ranging from highway clean up to food drives.

Cleaning Up of Blake Lane

As a club we noticed that the highway(Blake Lane) surrounding our school was very polluted. We decided to take action and got the Vienna Optimist club to sponsor us and help us adopt it.

Once the highway was “ours” we got straight to work. Each quarter our club would meet up after school and walk the entire highway and back picking up all the trash we saw.

Cleaning Up Responsibly

When we picked up trash we sorted it in to recyclables and non-recyclables. Then disposed of all bags properly.

Blake Lane now and forever will stay clean….
