Plasticolors’ IR reflective technology works to maximize total solar reflectance with focus in the IR region. Proper pigment selection, optimized milling, and tight manufacturing cleanliness practices are combined to meet the customers’ required total solar reflectance.
By using Plasticolors IR reflective technology, paint formulators and system houses can develop coatings that keep surfaces cool when exposed to the sun. When applied to a roof, the coatings can provide a number of benefits including reduced energy cooling costs, in-creased roof life cycle by reducing thermal shock stress associated with large temperature changes, decreased pollution, and reduced
heat island effect.
IR reflective technology supports government legislation and industry organizations such as the EPA’s Energy Star program, The Cool Roof Council, and California’s Title 24 requirements.
Other markets which can benefit from this technology include the transportation market (both interior and exterior applications), indus-trial coatings, wood and concrete deck coatings, and anywhere solar heat reflection is desired.

Solar Energy and Measurement
The Sun Emits Radiation
Sunlight consists of 5% Ultraviolet, 42% Visible, and 53% Invisible Infrared (Heat) Radiation.
Effect of the Sun’s Energy
When sunlight strikes an opaque object, it is reflected or absorbed.
When sunlight is absorbed, objects heat up.
Traditional roofs can heat up to over 180°F.
IR Reflective roofs can reduce the maximum temperature by 60°F or more.
Total Solar Reflectance Total solar reflectance is the measure of the amount of sunlight reflected from an object. The greater the reflectance, the
cooler the object. The total solar reflectance is measured using a Solar Spectral Reflectometer.
In visible light, all three panels appear black (left photo). In infrared light (right photo), the left panel with InfraCool® Colorant Technology appears white due to a high infrared reflectivity. The middle panel is a standard black and does not use InfraCool® Colorant Technology. It appears black due to high infrared absorptivity which creates heat build. The right panel also uses InfraCool® Colorant Technology and appears gray due to moderate infrared reflectivity. The higher the infrared reflectivity the cooler the surface!

INTRODUCTION
UCD™ HS high-solids colorants meet the
increasing demand for pigmented, low-Volatile-
Organic-Compound (VOC) polyurethanes to
replace low-solids thermosetting acrylics in
applications where exterior durability or chemical
resistance requirements preclude the use of
polyesters. The HS line of automotive (exterior)
grade colorants is formulated at maximum loadings
in a hydroxyl-functional modified-acrylic vehicle.
COMPATIBILITY
UCD™ HS colorants are compatible with a
wide variety of solvents, resins, polymers,
reactive diluents, and additives.
CHEMISTRY
The HS colorants are formulated with a hydroxyl-
functional acrylic resin.* The primary solvent is
methyl n-amyl ketone, which offers the benefit of
low specific gravity. The end result is colorants that
offer high functional reactivity for maximum
resistance properties, low VOC levels, excellent
pigment development, and rheological
characteristics that contribute extraordinary
stability to the colorant (resistance to flocculation,
settling, and syneresis).
In addition to the superior pigment development
afforded by the HS millbase, all colorants exhibit
excellent grind, high gloss and transparency
(organics), and high tinting strength value. Another
significant feature: on average, HS colorants contain
68% less VOC than typical solvent-borne colorants.
Consequently, HS colorants can be formulated into
high-solids coatings containing less than 2.8 pounds
of VOC per gallon.
*Equivalent weight is 400 (solids).
PROPERTIES
The tinting strength of the colorants is controlled
to ±2% of the standard. The color difference is
controlled to less than 0.8 CIELAB units with the
individual color components (DA, DB, and DL)
controlled to ±0.80 CIELAB units.
HS colorants have a viscosity range that facilitates
their use in volumetric dispensing equipment.
HANDLING AND STORAGE
Proper handling is essential to maintain good
quality. It is recommended that the colorants be
mixed prior to use. Containers should be tightly
sealed when not in use. Repacking the colorant
into a smaller container should be considered if
the colorant level in the container is less than 20%
of the original amount and will be stored for a
extended period of time.
Shelf life on the HS line colorants is 3 years from
the date of manufacture in unopened containers.

INTRODUCTION
The V series of colorants has been designed for broad use in modern coatings. These products have closely controlled color strength and viscosity to permit reproducible color matches by volumetric machine dispensers or weight measurement in the plant.
The colorant vehicle consists of a low-molecular weight acrylic resin dissolved in propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PM) acetate. This combination provides superior compatibility with two-part urethanes, epoxies, alkyds of all oil lengths, and vinyls.
UCD™ V colorants are thixotropic, which makes them resistant to separation by settling or syneresis. The PM acetate solvent assures long package life and freedom from caking and drying in opened containers or dispensing equipment.

CHEMISTRY
The V colorant vehicle is a nonfunctional methacrylate polymer with a tightly controlled, low molecular weight. The low molecular weight of the vehicle helps to ensure full development of pigment strength while providing a rheological profile suited to automated dispensers.
PM acetate is used as the solvent because it is not toxic and does not react with crosslinking resins such as isocyanates.
Only prime pigments are included in this line’s color spectrum; no extenders are present.
PROPERTIES
The tinting strength of the colorants is controlled to ±2% of the standard. The color difference is controlled to less than 0.8 CIELAB units with the individual color components (DA, DB, and DL) controlled to ±0.80 CIELAB units.
HANDLING AND STORAGE

Revised: November 2011
INTRODUCTION
The UCD™ E series of colorants is distinguished by
the fact that they contain no hazardous air
pollutants (HAPS) and less than 0.05 pound of
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) per gallon.
These colorants are appropriate for most water-
based coating systems.
UCD E colorants are formulated with a unique
proprietary acrylic resin that provides excellent
pigment wetting. This feature makes possible high
pigment concentrations at relatively low millbase
solids levels. For the paint formulator, this means
less millbase resin can be added to a paint. Also, less
colorant is required in formulations that employ an
E colorant as a tinter or as the entire pigment; the
result is a savings in valuable inventory space.
UCD E colorants provide excellent performance
through ease of incorporation and resistance to
flooding/floating and flocculation. E products should
not negatively affect paint physical properties.
COMPATIBILITY
E colorants should be suitable for use with a variety
of waterborne systems. These include but are not
limited to the following:
Acrylic/PVA emulsions
Water-reducible polyester/epoxies
Water-soluble alkyds
Urethanes
Acrylics
E colorants are also compatible with systems
containing co-solvents and are not limited to use in
low-VOC paint formulations.
CHEMISTRY
E colorants have an alkaline pH and are suitable for
use in both nonionic and anionic paint systems.
Only prime pigments are included in this line’s color
spectrum; no extenders are present.
E colorants are typically not recommended for
use in manual volumetric dispensing systems.
However, performance in dispenser systems with
covered dispenser tips should be acceptable.
PROPERTIES
The tinting strength of the colorants is controlled
to ±2% of the standard. The color difference is
controlled to less than 0.8 CIELAB units with the
individual color components (DA, DB, and DL)
controlled to ±0.80 CIELAB units.
HANDLING AND STORAGE
Proper handling is essential to maintain good
quality. It is recommended that the colorants be
mixed prior to use. Due to the lack of any co-
solvents, the E line colorants will dry quickly and
could flake if not handling properly. Containers
should be tightly sealed when not in use.
Repacking the colorant into a smaller container
should be considered if the colorant level in the
container is less than 20% of the original amount
and will be stored for an extended period of time.
Shelf life on the E line colorants is 3 years from
the date of manufacture in unopened containers.

INTRODUCTION
UCD™ Q colorants are employed in all types of water-based coating systems.
The products in this series offer a combination of high quality, efficiency, and compatibility with all types of coating binders. They are extremely well-suited for use in marine, industrial maintenance, retail sales, and high-performance coatings applications.
UCD Q colorants also provide significant economic advantages. Because they are compatible with all major classes of water-based paint chemistries, they allow the coating manufacturer to reduce his or her supplies of colorants. Some manufacturers have been able to save as much as 80% in inventory and storage space requirements. Q colorant users have also been able to reduce production time and increase equipment utilization.
Q line colorants represent a good balance of high performance and cost-effectiveness in a wide range of applications. Other desirable attributes of Q colorants are as follows:
Low volatile organic compound (VOC) levels
Not Red Label
Low vehicle-to-pigment ratios for tinting or total pigmentation
Excellent shelf stability
COMPATIBILITY
Water-soluble alkyds
Acrylics
Water-reducible polyester/epoxies
Urethanes
Acrylic/PVAs
CHEMISTRY
The Q colorant vehicle is an alkali soluble acrylic polymer. The acrylic resin is neutralized with dimethyl ethanol amine.
Butyl Cellosolve (Glycol Ether EB) is the co-solvent that is used in this line. For the colorants that are denoted with a “W”, the co-solvents are mineral spirits and m-pyrol.
Only prime pigments are included in this line’s color spectrum; no extenders are present.
PROPERTIES
Color strength is maintained within a tolerance of ±3% on a weight basis by means of a computer-interfaced spectrophotometer.
To provide a high-performance end product, our Q production process and proprietary methacrylate vehicle were developed to generate colorants that provide maximum pigment wetting without any adverse effect on film integrity.
HANDLING AND STORAGE
Proper handling is essential to maintain good quality. It is recommended that the colorants be mixed prior to use. Containers should be tightly sealed when not in use. Repacking the colorant into a smaller container should be considered if the colorant level in the container is less than 20% of the original amount and will be stored for an extended period of time.
Shelf life on the Q line colorants is generally 3 years from the date of manufacture in unopened containers.
Plasticolors ChromaCure™ 73-series colorants for UV cure coatings consist of high quality organic and in-organic pigments finely milled in monomer and monomer/oligomer blends. Revised: November 2011
INTRODUCTION
The UCD™ PS line is a series of 100%-solids
colorants for high-performance coatings. Each
product in the line consists of a dry pigment mixed
in a low-molecular-weight methoxy-functional
silicone intermediate. PS colorants are designed to
be reacted with other silicones, epoxies, and
hydroxyl-functional resins to produce copolymers
with outstanding properties.
Silicone compounds typically provide excellent
weatherability, chalk resistance, and heat resistance.
Consequently, the use of polymers containing PS
colorants (and their silicone intermediate) tends to
produce highly durable coatings.
The PS line is formulated at maximum pigment
loading for use in volumetric or gravimetric
dispensing systems.
COMPATIBILITY
PS colorants are suitable for use in a wide variety of
conventional and high-solids solvent-based coatings.
Binders and solvents compatible with PS colorants
include but are not limited to the
Polymers* Solvents
Acrylics Aromatic solvents
Polyester Ketones
Alkyds Esters
Epoxies Chlorinated solvents
Glycol ethers
PM Acetate
*Polymer system must be designed to crosslink
intermediate into the final film.
CHEMISTRY
The methoxy groups of the silicone millbase resin
in the PS products provide the formulator with
several useful options.
These methoxy groups enable the resin to
crosslink with other silicone resins in the
presence of heat and a catalyst, generally an
organometallic type. Coatings based on this all-
silicone chemistry are generally employed in high-
temperature applications.
As indicated previously, the millbase resin will also
crosslink with epoxies and hydroxy-functional
resins such as polyesters, acrylics, and alkyds. As
with silicone resins, heat and a catalyst are
required to make the PS colorants to react with
the hydroxy-functional resins. With epoxy resins,
an organosilicon curing agent is generally used to
initiate crosslinking. Modification of these systems
with 30% to 50% silicone intermediate (on resin
solids) will generally improve durability.
PROPERTIES
The tinting strength of the colorants is controlled
to ±2% of the standard. The color difference is
controlled to less than 0.8 CIELAB units with the
individual color components (DA, DB, and DL)
controlled to ±0.80 CIELAB units.
HANDLING AND STORAGE
Proper handling is essential to maintain good
quality. It is recommended that the colorants be
mixed prior to use. Containers should be tightly
sealed when not in use.
Shelf life on the PS line colorants is 3 years from
the date of manufacture in unopened containers.

Revised: November 2011
INTRODUCTION
UCD™ SF (solvent-free) colorants provide a broad color spectrum in a colorless unsaturated low-molecular-weight polyester resin containing no solvents or reactive monomers. These products are formulated at maximum pigment loading to minimize the effects of the polyester vehicle on the coating film.
Although the SF colorants are primarily used in curing formulations, the vehicle is also compatible with a variety of non-crosslinking resins, including vinyls, alkyds, nitrocellulose, acetates, and acrylic lacquers. The plasticizing effect of the SF resin occurs at levels above 15% of total vehicle solids. Therefore, when considering total pigmentation with SF colorants, the formulator should evaluate the potential impact of SF resin properties on film integrity very carefully. When crosslinked or covalently reacted, as in gel coats, the SF vehicle is fully converted to a portion of the vehicle solids.

CHEMISTRY
Unsaturation in the linear backbone of the SF vehicle allows monomeric crosslinking with styrene, methyl methacrylate, and other unsaturated vinyl monomers. The polyester resin also has secondary hydroxyl groups. The equivalent weight is 319 (solids).

All of these additives are liquids and, hence, will provide products that are generally easier to incorporate when compared to dry powders. The use of our proven acrylic resin technology means superior compatibility of the UCDTM additives with modern coatings.
COMPATIBILITY
These additives will be compatible with many solvent-based and water-based coatings. Similarly to the UCDTM colorants, these additives will be compatible with many resin systems based on acrylic, epoxy, polyester, alkyd, polyurethane, and vinyl polymers.
USAGE LEVELS
Since all coatings systems are different, it is recommended that a ladder study be performed to determine the appropriate level of the additive to achieve the desired properties. A general starting point range will be 1 - 5% by weight of the total coating.
Since the SynermixTM additives are dispersant blends, these additives must be incorporated into the grinding phase to minimize dispersion rates and optimize wetting properties.
CHEMISTRY
All of the UCDTM additives utilize our proven acrylic resin technology to create additives that have broad compatibility. The SynermixTM additives build on Plasticolors’ extensive wetting and dispersing knowledge to provide synergistic dispersant blends.
The primary solvent for the solvent-based additives is mineral spirits. The UCD 2148Q contains a small level of Butyl Cellosolve (Glycol Ether EB) as a co-solvent.
PROPERTIES
All additives are thixotropic, but are flowable. The thixotropy of the additives provides resistance to settling and aids the long-term shelf stability of these products.
HANDLING AND STORAGE
Proper handling is essential to maintain good quality. It is recommended that the additives be mixed prior to use to ensure uniformity. Containers should be tightly sealed when not in use. Repacking the additives into a smaller container should be considered if the additive level in the container is less than 20% of the original amount and will be stored for an extended period of time.
Shelf life of the UCD additives is 3 years from the date of manufacture in unopened containers. The shelf life of the SynermixTM
additives is 2 years from the date of manufacture in unopened containers.

UCD 2106N SLICK This product is compatible with all solvent-based coatings. The characteristics of the polyolefin dispersion can improve properties such as slip, mar resistance, and pigment suspension. UCD 2106N is especially superior in its ease of incorporation and minimal gloss loss when used in solvent-based coatings. The UCD 2106N incorporates an ultra-compatible proprietary methacrylate resin as the dispersion vehicle. The resin to polyolefin ratio is lower than many comparable products. UCD 2226N FLATTING PASTE This is a solvent-based silica paste that can be added to your finished product to adjust gloss in-plant or in the field. Unlike many silica-based pastes, the UCD 2226N is thixotropic, which will resist settling and hard-packing. UCD 2148Q FLATTING PASTE This is a water-based silica paste that can be added to your finished product to adjust gloss in-plant or in the field. Similar to the UCD 2226N, the UCD 2148Q is thixotropic, which will resist settling and hard-packing. UCD 2360N BENTONE PASTE Bentone products are formed by replacing the inorganic cations in a clay mineral lattice with organic cations. This results in a compound that forms a thixotropic gel in organic liquids. UCD 2360N is a ready-to-use paste that can be post-added to coatings, without any preparation, to provide pigment suspension and sag resistance. UCD 9844N MPA This is a multipurpose flow additive that will provide sag control and pigment suspension with enhanced brushability and flow with minimal effects on viscosity and gloss. One of the benefits of UCD 9844N is that it can be post-added to control the pigment suspension, sagging, brushability, and flow.
