The University Business School made its beginning in 1968, when the first batch of MBAs
was admited. Since then it has addeda number of courses and strengthened the research base. The
courses, for which the details are given in this Hankbook of Information, have been introduced keeping in
view the changing environment and the needs of the industry. The curriculum is regularly updated with
the help of renowned academicians and our alumni. The alumni of the School hold key positions in

THE UNIVERSITY BEAUTIFUL IN THE CITY BEAUTIFUL
A masterpiece of architectural aesthetics, Chandigarh
is one of the most beautiful cities of India. The city has
witnessed a unique harmony in industrial and cultural
growth and has produced the best in every discipline.
The Panjab University was founded more than a
century ago. From a small beginning as an expanded
version of a college in Lahore, it grew steadily into a
University of national significance. Pandit Nehrus dream
of University Beautiful in a City Beautiful in India
Culminated into reality with location of the The Panjab
University Chandigarh in 1956. Spread over two complete
sectors in the city, Panjab University can boast of having
one of the most attractive campuses of the Planet Earth.
The University consists, at present, of the Chandigarh
Campus with its teaching departments and its affiliated
colleges spread over the Union Territory of Chandigarh and
a part of state of Punjab. It has more than 50 teaching
departments, covering areas of study in Science, Arts,
Business Management and Commerce, Engineering and
Technology, Law and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Panjab

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL
The University Business School (Formerly
Department of Commerce and Business Management) has
been imparting quality management education to develop
dedicated, innovative and effective managers, researchersand teachers for above three decades. The rechristeningof the Department of Commerce and Business
Management as University Business School in 1995 by
the Panjab University, symbolises the recognition of its
completeness and maturity of the Department as a centre
of management education in India. The transformation from
a Department to a School has given it a distinct identity as
a School of Thought.
The Philosophy of the management education at the
University Business School is built on an integrative value-
system. It is motivated by dutybound work ethics, humane
approach and scientific temper. The philosophy of theSchool is translated into mission of creating wholesome
personality of human beings with a view to producing
effective, efficient and innovative managers, researchersand teachers. Modern attitude, practical wisdom, knowledge
and skill relevant for management are deeply ingrained in
the serene Indian culture.
The School uses rigorous multifaceted pedagogy with
an effective interface with industry to translate the mission
into action. It creates opportunity for its students to enhance
their understanding of economic, social and political
environment to enlarge their ability not only to adjust tochange but to become catalyst, and to develop their power
to conceptualise, decide and communicate.
The faculty of the University Business School, trained
in India and abroad, has earned international recognition
in Industry and academia. The students produced by the
School have made a mark in the world. The School hasbeen recongnised by the University Grants Commission
under Special Assistance Programme for the following
thrust areas:
(i) Marketing of services and rural marketing,
International Business-Strategies and regionalstudies.
(ii) Accounting and business f inance-social
responsibility and human resources accounting,investment decision making and innovative
financing.
The School has been identified by the University
Grants Commission for organising Refresher Courses and
Training Programmes for University and College Teachers.
It has also been given the responsiblity of educational
organising Induction Training Programme for teachers ofeducational institutions imparting management educationin the country. It has organised several programmes where
teachers from all over India participated as trainees and
benefited from such programmes. The University
Business School has consistently been ranked among
the top 15 Business Schools and ranked second
amongst the universities of India. UBS during 2004-
2005 has achieved 100% palcement. More than 54 top
companies selected our graduates.
The faculty interacts with industry through consultancy
assignments, management development programmes, and
industry focussed research and case studies. A goodnumber of top executives from the industry around
Chandigarh take regular classes at the School, which helps
in imparting pragmatic sense to the teaching learningprocess. In addition, management luminaries are invited
for special lectures.
Practical experience in the actual work environment
in the industry is the necessary component of the full time
management programmes. It is compulsory for every
student to go for a summer training of eight weeks duration
at the end of first year. The students relate their class room
learning with the reality of management, and second yearprogramme becomes more goal oriented and meaningful.
The students take Research Project based on some
aspects of industry in the third and fourth semester of the
educational programme.
The School is well equipped with the modern methods
of teaching both in terms of trained faculty and teachingdevices. Computers form an integral part of learning system.
The Course work is demanding. The pefrormance of the
students is continuously evaluated through class
participation, written assignments, snap tests at regular
intervals in addition to mid-semester examinations.
The School has a well-organised placement cell for
full time students. Every year a placement brochure isprepared containing brief bio-data of the final year students,
and sent to nearly all reputed organisations. Nearly all the
students get placement through campus interviews. The
average annual emoluments for the last year students were
Rs. 5.5 lakhs.

The School has special seats for Foreign/NRI/NRI
sponsored students. The additional funds thus generated
are used for infrastructural improvement and givingscholarships to brilliant and needy students of the School.
The excellence of the University Business School can
be judged by the praiseworthy performance of its alumni
who have made their mark in establishing and managing
business organisations like Vardhman and Daksh. The
Alumni also hold faculty positions in the top management
institutions of the world. Many of them are in multinationals
and the Indian Administrative Services.
The Ph.D. Programme of the University Business
School has international reputation. A large number of
students, Indian and Foreign have earned their Doctorate
in different areas of management and commerce and about
125 scholars are currently on active roll.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
The Candidates enrolled under Ph. D. Programme are required to go through
2-3 semester course work. The University Business School decides the course

OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
E-commerce as a way of conducting business effectivelyand efficiently has become a reality, and will caputre majorbusiness space in the future. It has become an inevitablecompetitive tool available to business for facilitating,
integrating and accelerating transactions in the areascovering education, entertainment, banking, finance,insurance, hospitality, travel and manufacturing. Theemerging business enivronment offers career opportunitiesfor talented individuals with the right combination of skillsin management and technology.
The course aims at extending the inter-disciplinary
competence of the candidates and imparts them trainingand requisite skills with a view to enable them to pursuecareer in E-commerece teaching and research as well asconduct and management of technology enabled business.
Eligibility criteria
The eligibility of M.Com. (E-commerce) will be asfollows :
a) B.Com.//BBA with not less than 45% marks in theaggregate; OR
b) B.Com. (Hons.) degree with not less than 45% marksin the aggregate; OR
c) A graduate with Honours in Economics or Mathmaticsor Statistics or Commerce with not Less than 45%
1. Admission for these courses will be made on the basis ofmerit determined by scores of the candidates in CATconducted by IIMs followed by group discussion andpersonal interview. Candidates under various reservedcategories and Foreign / NRI/NRI sponsored category will
compete within their categories on the same criteria.
2. The candidates are called for group discussion andpersonal interview on the basis of their scores in thewritten test (CAT) conducted by IIMs.

3. The number of candidates to be called for groupdiscussion and personal interview will be equal to eighttimes the total number of seats of all the three coursesin each category. All foreign / NRI / NRI sponsoredcandidates will be called for Group Discussion andpersonal interview at Chandigarh. There are 24 seatsin MBA, 15 each in MBA (IB) and MBA (HR) in generalcategory. This makes the total number of seats in three
management course equal to 54. Therefore 432 (fourhundred thirty two) which is eight times the fifty fourseats, will be called for group discussion and personalinterview in general category. Similar calculation willbe applicable to other reserve categories on the basisof number of seats available.
4. Final combined merit list of all the candidates calledfor group discussion and personal interview will beprepared category wise for each course on the basisof their combined aggregate score in the written testgroup discussion and personal interview. Admissionswill be made on the basis of this merit list. Theweightage for the written test, group discussion andpersonal interview for preparing the final merit list foradmission will be as follows :
WRITTEN TEST (CAT) 85% (OF THE PERCENTAGE CAT SCORE)
GROUP DISCUSSION 7.5%
PERSONAL INTERVIEW 7.5%
5. The eligibility of a candidate will be provisional atevery successive stage of admission process. It willbe responsibility of the candidate to make sure abouthis/her eligibility and fulfilment of various conditionsfor admission as prescribed in the Rules / Regulationsof the University. Admission will be cancelled at anystage in case the candidate is not found eligible.
6. All provisionally eligible candidates will take written testconducted by IIMs (CAT) on 20th November, 2005
from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at various centres.7. (a)The candidates appearing in f inal degree
examinations are eligible to apply and can take thewritten test provisionally. They will have to fulfil theeligibility condition at the time of admission, failingwhich the candidates will not be considered foradmission even after they have gone through allthe stages of the admission process. The result ofthe qualitying examination should be submittedpositively by Aug. 10, 2006 failing which theadmission will be cancelled.
b) The vacant seats if any on 31st August, 2006 willbe filled from those who are present by 5.00 p.m.on that day . The seats shall be filled strictlyaccording to merit. Information about vacant seatswill be disp layed on the notice board and the website. It is the students responsiblit y to keep awatch for the vacant seats. No separate notice willbe given regarding the vacant seats.
8. The group discussion and personal interview of theshort-listed candidates will begin at UniversityBusiness School, Panjab University, Chandigarhwhere the candidates will have to come at their owncost, around the third week of February, 2006.
9. The final combined category wise result of thecandidates will be notified around last week of March/1st week of April, 2006. The candidate will appearforcounselling in the 1st or 2nd week of May, 2006.At the time of counselling, admission to MBA,MBA(IB)& MBA (HR) will be offered strictly according to thecombined merit list. The candidates will have to depositRs. 10,000/-in cash or DD in favour of Registrar,Panjab University, Chandigarh towards the firstinstalments of tuition fees and other University charges.Further , the candidates will have to deposite anotherRs. 10.000/- in cash or DD in favour of Chairman,University Business School, Panjab UniversityChandigarh payable at Chandigarh towards SummerPlacement, Teaching materials, Business Club andcomputer Charges etc.
DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS with respect to fee,refund of fees, doucments and procedures will be sentto the selected candidates before counselling. TheBoard of Control of UBS has the final authorityregarding admissions and changes can be made inthe existing rules, according to the University rulesprevailing in 2006 as given in the Handbook ofInformation and Rules for admission of the University.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The rules incorporated in this Handbook aresubject to the over-riding effcet of the relevantRegulations and Rules contained in the P.U.Calendars as also the resolutions adopted by theSyndicate. 11. Foreign / NRI / NRI sponsored candidates not residingin India and thereby unable to avail of the aboveadmission process will be required to submit scoresof GMAT, Princeton which will be treated at par withthe combined score of written test, (CAT) groupdiscussion and personal interview conducted byPanjab University.
12. The last date for submission of application forms byForeign/NRI/NRI sponsored candidates not in India andapplying for admission on the basis of GMAT score is 28thFebruary, 2006 (upto 5 P.M.).
13. For Foreign / NRI / NRI sponsored candidates, the totalfee is US$ 5250 per year. This consists of tuition feeUS$ 4725 and Development Fund (non refundable)
of US$525 per year. Registration fee US$ 550 will alsobe charged from those who have passed the qualifyingexam from a University/ Institution other than PanjabUniversity.

GUIDELINES FOR PERCENTAGE
OF RESERVATIONS / OPEN SEATS
IMPORTANT NOTE :
Admission in all reserved categories shall be madesubject to fulfilment of the eligibility conditions and in
accordance with the provisions of the Admission Process
contained in Handbook of Information 2006 issued by
the University Business School.
1. At least 60.5% of the seats in each course shall be
treated as belonging to the Open category.
2. Up to 39.5% seats shall be treated as belonging to
the Reserved category, as per details given below :
In making admission, University Business School will
reserve seats in each class as under :-
(a) 15 percent for members of Scheduled Castes;
(b) 7 percent for members of Scheduled Tribes.
Provided that the reservation in (a) and (b) above can
be inter-changeable i.e. if a sufficient number of applicants
is not available to fill up the seats reserved for Scheduled
Tribes, they may be filled up by suitable candidates from
Scheduled Castes and vice-versa;
The above reservation shall be subject to the following
conditions :-
(i) the number of students belonging to the above
Classes admitted on merit shall not be included
in the number of seats reserved;
(ii) members of Scheduled Castes / Tribes shall be
allowed concession of 5 percent marks for
admission to the courses in which a certain
percentage of minimum marks has been
prescribed, provided they have obtained
minimum pass marks prescribed by theregulations; and
(iii) in case 22.5 per cent seats earmarked for
Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes remain
unfilled, a further relaxation in the marks may
be given to them, in order of merit amongst
themselves so that all the reserved seats are
filled in by candidates belonging to these
categories.
*(c) 3 per cent for Physically Handicapped persons;
(d) 5 per cent on the basis of achievement in sports;
(e) Upto 5 per cent (for all the undermentioned
categories taken together) for candidates who
fall in one of the following categories (which are
given here in order of precedence) :-
(i) Sons/Daughters/Spouses of such Defence
and Para Military Personnel like CRPF/
BSF etc. who died in action while on duty.Only those who were wholly dependant on
such personnel shall be considered.
(ii) Sons/Daughters/Spouses as are wholly
dependant on such Defence and Para-
Military Personnel who were incapacitated/
died** while in service.
(iii) Such Sons/ Daughters / Spouses of ex-
servicemen*** (Defence and Para-military
Personnel like CRPF / BSF etc.) as are
wholly dependant on them.
* Claimant in this category should be capable of pursuing the course of which the admission is sought. The handicappedcandidates should have a minimum of 40% disability duly certified by the Medical Board of District/State/UT/Medical Institutionof National Importance. Such certificate shall be further certified by the Medical Board o fthe Panjab University Health Centre.
** Incapacitation will mean incapacitation leading to the discharge of the person by the concerned authorities.

*** Ex-Serviceman means a person who has served in any rank whether as a combatant or noncombatant in the regular Army,Navy and Air Force of Indian Union or in Paramilitary services :
(i) Who retired from the service after earning his / her pension; or
(ii) Who has been boarded out of the service on medical grounds attributable to military service or circumstances beyond hiscontrol and awarded medical or other disability pension; or
(iii) Who has been released from the service as a result of reduction in establishment; or
(iv) Who has been released from service after completing the specific period of engagement, otherwise than at his ownrequest, or by way of dismissal, or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency and has been given a gratuity.
Territorial Army Personnel of the following categories shall also be considered as ex-servicemen :-
(a) Pension holders for continuous embodied service.
(b) Disabled Territorial Army Personnel with disability attributable to military service.
(c) Gallantry award winners.
(iv) Defence and Para-Military Personnel who
are incapacitated while in service.
(v) Such Sons/Daughters / Spouses of
serving defence and Para-Military
Personnel like CRPF/BSF etc. as arewholly dependant on them.
(vi) Ex-servicemen
(vii) Serving Defence and Para-Military
Personnel like CRPF/BSF etc.
For admission to evening courses, categories ii, iii, &
v under (e) above will not be considered, since the term
wholly dependant will exclude such persons as are
employed or self employed.
Under categories i, ii, & iv under (e) the Vice Chancellor
may, at his discretion, sanction additional seats up to a
further 5% of the total number of seats in a course. These
seats will be treated as being in addition to the approved
strength of a course in that year only.
(f) 2 per cent for son/daughter/husband/wife/
brother/sister of persons killed/incapacitated in
November 1984 riots and of persons killed/
incapacitated in terrorist violence in Punjab andChandigarh. A certificate from the District
Magistrate to this effect must be submitted by
the candidates.
(g) 2% for the Children/Grand children of freedom
fighters who have been sanctioned pension by
Central/State Govt. or awarded Tamra Patra by
Govt. of India.
NOTE : Students sponsored by the Government of India
and Foreign students who approach the University foradmission through the Central Ministry of Education
may be admitted, if they fulfil the minimum conditions
for admission to the course subject to decision of the
University.
