ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES DIVISION CENTRAL DUPLICATING SERVICE Central Duplicating Service provides low-cost, high-quality digital printing, color copying and high-speed duplicating to all offices and departments of the University community. A full line of bindery services also is available to meet customer printing needs. Central Duplicating is recognized for its quick turnaround of printing requests and is committed to providing quality service to the entire University. Summary of Major Accomplishments Central Duplicating continued to focus on developing new relationships and maintaining successful partnerships with departments and organizations throughout the campus. The printing technology utilized by Central Duplicating is referred to as digital printing. Digital printing is the method of printing from digital-based images directly to a variety of media. Although digital printing has a higher cost per page than most traditional offset printing methods, this price is countered by the costs saved in avoiding all the technical steps associated with offset printing techniques. Print-on-demand developed after digital printing began because it is economical to print single copies. Technical set-up is quicker than offset printing. Large inventories of print jobs do not need to be kept in stock, reducing storage, handling costs and inventory accounting costs. With digital printing, turnaround times are instantaneous, which is essential to the success of Central Duplicating. Although a 9.4% decrease in black and white impressions in Fiscal Year 2011 resulted in a decrease in revenue of 4.1%, color impressions were up 39%. This continues to support the importance of maintaining a digital print shop on campus. Global print markets continue to reflect an increase in digital printing, while offset printing is expected to drop and share less of the total market. Central Duplicating changed its pricing structure to tier pricing, lowering the cost per copy as volume increased; this resulted in an increase in larger production jobs. Due to the increase in color impressions, Central Duplicating purchased a new Xerox 800 Color Digital Press which features many capabilities such as clear dry ink and 3-D imaging. The bindery area was updated with the purchase of a Duplo Perfect Binder and a Duplo Cutter, Slitter, Slicer. Digital print personnel participated in Pit Stop training by Xerox to learn skills to adjust printers more accurately for better color copying quality. One staff member participated in Professional Business Training on campus to increase customer service skills. Central Duplicating staff worked with customers throughout the year to help them convert files to PDF for submitting jobs. Staff also worked with users of MAC computers to train them on submitting projects to Central Duplicating. D-12
