The Administrative Assistant – Medical program at BSC centers on preparing students for work in offices related to the practice of medicine. Curriculum emphasizes medical terminology, medical transcription, and elementary anatomy and physiology courses, along with database and business math. On the job, medical administrative assistants transcribe dictation and prepare reports or articles for physicians or medical scientists. They also take simple medical histories of patients, arrange for patient hospitalization, or process insurance payments. Medical administrative assistants need to be familiar with medical terminology, medical records, and hospital or laboratory procedures. They also create and maintain patient file systems. Opportunities will be best for applicants with extensive knowledge of software applications.
The aging population will have increased demand for medical services. As a result, medical administrative assistants will be needed to handle administrative tasks related to billing and insurance processing.
