Ein Substantive macht Larm

All nouns have a gender. They are either masculine, neutral, or feminine (der, das, die) and each one makes a certain sound…

Masculine (der) – is manly, grumpy and always acts tough and trys to show even when he is not so cool.

Neutral (das) – is right between yes and no, indesisive and cannont commit.

Feminine (die) – is always excited about what is going to happen and can hardly contain itself or

RRRRRRRR!SSSSSSSSS…EEEEEEEEE!

See any connection?!?!?

If you look at the sounds the different genders make, we can deduce WHERE the articles came from…

Masculine (der) Der/ein-- Den/einenNeutral (das) Das/ein-- Das/ein--Feminine (die) Die/eine Die-eine

If the initial sound of RRR, SSS, and EEE are made in the article then every adjective will have and ‘e’ ending!

Changes…Spot #1Nomnative Accusative Dative Genitive

Masculine (der) Der/ein-- Den/einenNeutral (das) Das/ein-- Das/ein--Feminine (die) Die/eine Die-eine

You will notice that ‘der’ changes to ‘den’ when a masculine noun changes from nominative to accusative case (subject to direct object)

Page 17: Adjectiv Endungen Lite: Adjective following articles and pre-ceeding nouns. Colors and Clothes.

Changes…Spot #1Nomnative Accusative Dative Genitive

Masculine (der) Der/ein-- Den/einenNeutral (das) Das/ein-- Das/ein--Feminine (die) Die/eine Die-eine

This means that the original RRR sound has evolved into a brand new sound of

EN!Any adjective following the EN sound will

end in the same EN sound.

Page 18: Adjectiv Endungen Lite: Adjective following articles and pre-ceeding nouns. Colors and Clothes.

Changes…Spot #3, 4, 5Nomnative Accusative Dative Genitive

Masculine (der) Der/ein-- Den/einenNeutral (das) Das/ein-- Das/ein--Feminine (die) Die/eine Die-eine

The other spots where the original sound is not made occurs with the word ‘ein’ (a)

in the masculine nominative and the neutral nominative/accusative…

Page 19: Adjectiv Endungen Lite: Adjective following articles and pre-ceeding nouns. Colors and Clothes.

Change…Spot #3, 4, 5Nomnative Accusative Dative Genitive

Masculine (der) Der/ein-- Den/einenNeutral (das) Das/ein-- Das/ein--Feminine (die) Die/eine Die-eine

When this occurs, since the original RRR, SSS are not there, the sound (or the letter)

transfers to the adjective!ein tollER or ein tollES

Lets do some practice…

Zusammenfassung (summary)

• When speaking each gender had a sound that it uses. RRR for masculine, SSS for neutral, EEE for feminine. If you don’t hear that sound, and an adjective comes after the article and before the noun, the adjective takes the sound. (otherwise the adjective takes an e)

• When masculine changes to ‘den’ any adjectives will have an ‘en’ ending.
