Here in Bermuda we used theweekend of 23rd25thMarch2013 to host a number of

events in commemoration ofthis special day. On Saturday23rdwe hosted a walk throughNorth Hamilton. Our maincity is Hamilton, in the parishof Pembroke and North Hamil-ton is an area where manyAfrican Bermudians settledwhen they came to Bermuda

both pre and post Emancipa-tion. This remains an area ofAfrican Bermudian owned busi-nesses to this day.On Sunday 24thMarch, we had

our signature event for thisannual commemoration, theannual commemorative serviceat Cobbs Hill Methodist

Church. This church was builtby slaves between 1825 and1827. The slaves worked on

the church after their normalwork day therefore most ofthe work was done at night. The road on which the churchis located is now called Mid-

    night Lane.On Monday 25thMarch there

was a visual display showing the

    ways in which African Bermudi-

    ans celebrated Emancipation.

    Our main Emancipation Cele-

bration event is Cup Match, a

    two day cricket game, which

may be the longest-standingemancipation celebration event

    in the western hemisphere. It

is played on the closest Thurs-

day and Friday to August 1,

which is Emancipation Day. Itbegan as a friendly game be-

tween a team from the western

end of the island and another

    from the eastern end during

    the annual picnics that were

    held to celebrate emancipation.

In 1901 it was agreed that the

teams would play for a trophy

and in 1902 a silver cup was

    purchased by the Friendly So-

    cieties and CUP MATCH was

    born. It is Bermudas most

    famous event for CELEBRAT-ING EMANCIPATION!!

    land rights against their

    will.

We are elders of the Maasai

    and incumbent President

    Goodluck Jonathan. However,

he won the inaugural edition of

    the Nigerian National Merit
