The new Tokyo National Stadium is more than a large sports facility designedto the highest design specifications and functional requirements. It is a pieceof the citys fabric, an urban connector which enhances and modulates peoplemoving through the site from different directions and points of access. Theelevated ground connections govern the flow of people through the site, effec-tively carving the geometric forms of the building.

The building volume sits gently within the urban landscape and is articu-lated as an assembly of stadium bowl, structural skeleton, cladding membranesand the museum, together forming an intricate structural composition that isboth light and cohesive. The perimeter of the bowl structure becomes a new

inhabited bridge, a continuous exhibition space that creates a new type ofjourney for visitors flowing along the projects north-south axis.

The stadium roof defines an iconic silhouette that integrates gently withinthe cityscape around it. It is an intricate assemblyof efficient long-spanning structural ribs that arespanned by a system of lightweight, translucentmembranes. This unique structure is a light-

weight solution, where the stadium elevation graciously touches the ground, defining a clearapproach towards the stadium entrances. Theinterior of the stadium is also given a clear iden-tity through the strong roof structure that con-trasts with the lightness of the translucentmembrane tensile structures.

The museum is displaced from the main bowgeometry as a discernibly separate element. Itdefines an elevated plaza for public use a newurban gathering space that can be used by the

public for functions outside of sports events, yetits carefully controlled views into the stadiumintimately tie it to the overall sports complexThe museum is lifted up above the ground planeallowing for a minimal footprint on ground

where the landscape extends beneath it.

LDA-Design with Hargreaves Associates,Arup and Atkins, the design teambehind the Olympic Park, have beennamed winner of the 2012 Land-scape Institute Presidents Award.

The Olympic Delivery Authorityhas been named winner of the 2012Landscape Institute Peter YoungmanAward. Both awards recognise thespecial nature of the Olympic Park

project and also the extraordinaryachievement it represents.

RIBA has responded to the

Chancellor of the Exchequer,Rt Hon George Osborne MPsAutumn Statement to the Houseof Commons on the 5 December.The RIBA has welcomed theChancellors commitment to build120,000 new homes as part of alarger 5.5 billion investment ininfrastructure but is concernedthat the government is not doingenough to address the currenthousing crisis.

RIBA president Angela Bradysaid: A healthy construction indus-try is vital if the UK is to recoverfrom the economic decline of the

past few years. We do not believe theAutumn Statement goes far enoughto tackle this housing crisis. Thecommitment to fund 120,000 is

welcome but significantly short ofthe mark; we need to be building300,000 new homes a year to meetcurrent demands and solve thehousing shortage.

Design quality is vital for creat-ing long lasting sustainable homes

and communities and offering reallong-term value to the taxpayer.The government must ensure thatthe promised investment in hous-ing and schools is spent on well-designed buildings where people

want to live and where children areinspired to learn.

Autumn Statement A missed opportunity

For the second year running, a build-

ing in Belfast has won the SupremeWinner Award and the Best PublicBuilding Category at the 2012 BrickAwards. The MAC, a new arts build-ing in Belfast, designed by architectsHackett Hall McKnight, followedin the footsteps of the 2011 Awardswinner, Belfasts Lyric Theatre. TheAwards were held at the MarriottGrosvenor Square Hotel in Londonon 13 November.

Completed in February 2012, theMAC reflects its location in Belfastand the surrounding heritage ofmills and warehouses.

Architect Ian McKnight com-mented: Belfast is a brick city. Thebuildings of its hey-day were all con-structed in brick, using simple, legibleconstruction. We sought to create abuilding that reflects this heritage notonly in its resilience and construc-tional legibility, but also in its warmthand texture and essential humanity.

Brick is the dominant finish bothexternally and within the main foyer,

which is dominated along one side by

a four storey wall of brick piers. Thebrick selection was undertaken withgreat care with the architects choos-ing Wienerbergers Mellowed RedSovereign Stock brick because itreflected the regularity of bricks typ-ically used in Belfast in the 19th an20th centuries. Built by brickworkcontractor Grove Builders Ltd, the

building has received many apprecia-tive comments from the public.

The brick walls use elements ofprecast concrete in a direct referenceto the stone cills, string courses andlintels of the traditional brick build-ings in Belfast. The detailing of these

was undertaken carefully, involvingthe contractor in key decisions withregards to buildability.

The result is a building with exter-nal brick elevations that are highlysuccessful in reflecting a contem-

porary interpretation of traditionalconstruction methods.

The judges felt that the MAC wasa fantastic building, such wonderfulframing with brick centralised as themost dominant feature and deservedthe accoloade of the BDA Supreme

Award 2012.In addition to the Supreme Award,

Belfast project wins top medalagain in Brick Awards

Following the massive success of the Olympic Park, and inan effort to celebrate its landscape legacy the LandscapeInstitute has released a series of films telling the story of thedesign and build of the London 2012 Olympic Park.

The series is headlined by a five minute film entitledThe Olympic Park: a landscape legacy, which brings togetherthe key players behind the creation of the Park and capturesthe role landscape had to play in the transformation of theonce derelict site.

Professor John Hopkins, project sponsor of the PublicRealm and Parklands, Neil Mattinson FLI, of LDA Design,Tom Smith of AECOM, Sarah Price of Sarah PriceLandscapes and Tom Armour of Arup are among the keyplayers who agreed to ta lk about their respective roles increating the Olympic Park and associated sites.

Headline figures in Constant (2005)Prices, Seasonally Adjusted The estimated total volume of all

new construction orders in thethird quarter of 2012 increased by

5.4 per cent compared with thesecond quarter of 2012. However,the level of orders in the thirdquarter is still the third lowest onrecord. The total volume of all newconstruction orders in the thirdquarter of 2012 was estimated to be6.7 per centlower than the thirdquarter of 2011.

Compared with the second quarterof 2012 there was an increase in theestimated volume of infrastructureorders in the third quarter of 31.4

per cent (with current price orders

for railways increasing by 79.1 percent). Infrastructure orders wereestimated to be 43.8 per cent higherin the third quarter of 2012 com-

pared with the same period oneyear earlier. This sector providesmost of the upwards movement inthe level of new orders in the thirdquarter of 2012.

The estimated volume of private commercial orders inthe third quarter of 2012 was 6.7 per cent lower thanthe second quarter and 35.1 per cent lower than thesame quarter one year earlier.

Although Q3 has seen some improvement against thesecond quarter in 2012, the overall level of construction neworders remains very poor, indicating continuing challengingconditions for construction in 2013.

Commenting on the ONS figures, Milja Keijonen, senioreconomist at the Construction Products Association said:

Our intelligence of the trading conditions the industry isexperiencing has indicated a difficult market and thesefigures from ONS certainly endorse this position. However,there are some brighter areas, as both infrastructure andprivate industrial construction new orders are showingdouble digit increases of 46 and 24 per cent respectively forthe first nine months of this year, compared to the sameperiod last year. It would be very encouraging if this percent-age growth was repeated across all sectors, but the figures for

these two sectors are not unexpected and the overall figure

of orders for all new work is negative.Commercial and private housing, that accounted for 36per cent of tota l construction output in 2011, saw ordersdecline both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year in thethird quarter. New orders for commercial work, the largestconstruction sector, were 18 per cent lower in the first ninemonths of 2012 compared with the same period in 2011,while private housing saw orders decline by 7 per cent froma year earlier.

Prototyping Architecture brings together the work of archi-tects, engineers, manufacturers, academics and artists toexplore the importance of prototypes in the delivery of highquality contemporary design. Placing a particular emphasison research and experimentation, the exhibition shows howtrial assemblies can inform architecture with maquettes,models and full-scale sample productions on show fromaround the world.

Curated by Professor Michael Stacey of the University ofNottingham, in conjunction with the Building Centre, the

show includes prototypes by Barkow Leibinger, RenzoPiano Building Workshop, YvesEbnoether, Zaha Hadid Architectsand many more. PrototypingArchitecture celebrates performativearchitecture that is inventive, pur-

poseful and beautiful.The full-scale prototype for

Kieran Timberlake AssociatesLoblolly House is a central featureof the exhibition. It has never beenexhibited outside the USA before. Itdemonstrates a new, more efficientmethod of building using building

information modelling (BIM) andintegrated component assemblies.The thousands of parts which makeup a building are collapsed into afew dozen off-site fabricated assem-blies that are simply attached to this industrial aluminiumframe on-site. The result is a truly modular house that can bere-assembled allowing for whole-sale reclamation.

One striking display is Philip Beesleys Protocell Meshproject which integrates first-generation prototypes thatinclude aluminium meshwork canopy scaffolding and a sus-

pended protocell carbon-capture filter array. Designed inToronto and primarily digital fabricated in Nottingham, it was

then assembled by the University of Nottingham Architecturestudents under the guidance of Philip Beesley and JonathanTyrrell of Waterloo Architecture and PBA Inc. This spectacu-lar combination of sculpture, architecture and science is partof the Living Architecture research programme, a collabora-tion with the Universities of Waterloo, Nottingham, andUniversitet Syddansk, funded by The Social Science &Humanities Research Council of Canada.

New architectural prototypes show a kind of promiscuousexchange between widely varying sources, sweeping away

traditional divisions between machine and hand crafts, anbetween nature and technology. Philip Beesley, Philip BeeslArchitect Inc.

The prototype structure of Jaguar Land Rovers new RanRover with an all-aluminium body, launched in Septemb2012, has been lent to the exhibition. Designed and enneered in Britain, it is the worlds first SUV with a lig

weight all-aluminium body. It achieves a weight saving 420kg when compared with the previous model, which is tequivalent to the weight if five average adults. This thi

generation of JLR light weight vehicle architecture combinwith improved aerodynamics resuin an increase in fuel efficiency over 20 per cent, significantly reduing the carbon footprint of ownia SUV. It is a high-profile example

potential technology transfer froother industries.

The exhibition includes: a digiprototype for the Passion FaadeAntoni Gaudis Sagrada FamBasilica and a laser-sintered additimanufactured violin, additive maufacturing has the potential herald a second industrial revoltion. The exhibition also includlightweight prefabricated fabformwork for on-site cast concrean early prototype for Anto

Gormley's Quantum Cloud; Optical fibre concrete; and mamore examples of innovation and invention that have bedeveloped for use in building design, or have the potentialbe translated to the construction industry.

The reduction of demand side energ y consumption is a ktheme in the exhibition, with examples on show of architectuthat provides comfort while consuming less energy. Resourefficient modes of fabrication and manufacturing that use le

material and thus provide components and systems with lowembodied energy are also celebrated. Combined, this is a nresourceful architecture for the 21st century.

Following presentations to the juryin mid-November, the Board ofTrustees of the Royal Opera Househas agreed the next stage of the OpenUp competition. The jury, comprisingmembers of the Royal Opera Houseexecutive team and a number of exter-nal advisors, have invited Stanton

Williams Architects and WitherfordWatson Mann Architects to completefurther work in response to a refinedbrief. The two firms will present againin January with a further announce-ment expected in early February.

Open Up aims to make the physicalentrances and street level public areas

to the building more open and invit-ing. The project will also develop exist-ing spaces, such as the Linbury StudioTheatre and Paul Hamlyn Hall, toenable the creative and educational

work of the Royal Opera House to

become more visible to more people.In turn this will enhance the appeal

of the Covent Garden building as adestination in itself. The project doesnot affect the main auditorium.

The Royal Opera House will belooking to reduce its use of energy andresources throughout the project as

part of an ongoing strategy embeddinggreen thinking into all areas of ROHoperations.

Tony Hall, chief executive of theRoyal Opera House said: We wereextremely pleased by the richness and

variety of the submissions received. Allthe architects taking part in the com-

petition proposed inspirational ideasfor how our public spaces could evolve.

We now look forward to workingfurther with Stanton Williams and

Witherford Watson Mann beforeappointing a chosen firm in February.

Anthony Lau, founder of designer andproducer of innovative cycle parking solu-tions, Cyclehoop, discusses the growinginterest in cycling and its impact on thedesign and construction of UK propertydevelopments

Cycling in the UK has had a revival.Following the success of Laura Trott,Chris Hoy and the rest of Team GB at

this summers Olympic Games, interestin cycling has almost doubled andfigures from the London School ofEconomics have confirmed that cyclingaccounts for 2.9 billion of the nationaleconomy. With the growing number ofcyclists on the roads and cycle theftremaining at an all-time high of700,000 bikes reported stolen each

year, architects and developers arefeeling more pressure to consider bikestores and secure cycle parking for newdevelopments.

In the past year it is believed thatmore than eight million Boris Bikeswere hired in London with over400,000 people taking advantage ofthe Cycle to Work Scheme.

As the number of cyclists increase,how are local authorities and privatedevelopers coping with the suddendemand for bike storage? The LondonAssembly previously addressed the lack

of cycle parking as a barrier to cyclingwithin the capital. Thankfully therehave been substantial improvementssince then, with over 60,000 more cycleparking spaces made available.

The recent cycle surge has led tomany developers replacing standard car

parking bays in favour of stylish andsafe storage for bicycles in new devel-opments. This trend is also supported

by the Code for Sustainable Homes inwhich developers are encouraged toprioritise cycle storage as a way topromote cycling as the main form oftransport to replace car journeys andessentially reduce CO2 emissions.

As cycle parking becomes a moreprominent part of a developers agenda,it is increasingly more apparent thatarchitects are using stylish, innovativeand space-saving storage options. Forexample, the 2-tier rack holds twice asmany bikes as a standard cycle rack.

The nations love affair with c yclingcontinues to grow and it seems that it

will keep on having an impact on thelandscape and change the surroundingsand modern architecture. Style andfunctionality go hand in hand as thesenew cycle storage solutions are beingbrought to the forefront of propertydevelopment and meeting the needs ofthe next generation of cyclists.

Cyclings impact on design

St Pauls Way Trust School in Bow,Tower Hamlets, has been shortlistedfor the 2013 National Civic TrustAwards. Winners will be announcedon 9 March 2013.

Designed byAstudio, the schemehas been recognised for its positivecultural, social and economic contri-bution to the local community. Theschool, which opened in early 2011,

was rebuilt as part of Tower HamletsBuilding Schools of the Future

Programme. Funded predominatelyby Tower Hamlets council, the 36million project also received 1million from the London ThamesGateway Corporation. The develop-ment was led and managed by thecouncil, and designed by Astudio inconjunction with the students, staffand wider community.

COMMENT

Archbishop McGrath Catholic HighSchool near Bridgend, which wasdesigned by architects HLM, has been

shortlisted for the Civic Trust Awardsand, on 30 November, was one of 52 tobe considered and one of only four tobe shortlisted for the prestigious trien-nial Dewi-Prys Thomas Prize. Theaward recognises the importance ofgood design to the quality of life, iden-tity and regeneration of Wales. Earlierthis year, the school also won theNational Eisteddfod Gold Medalfor Architecture.

Richard ONeil, director at HLM,said: Working with the School,Archdiocese and Authority has been

a privilege. We are delighted that thestudents, teachers and local commu-nity now have a facility which inspiresachievement, engendering pride withinthe community. We are, of course, alsodelighted that the design is receivingsuch accolades and honoured thatthe school has recently been short-listed for the prestigious Dewi-PrysThomas Prize.

With the current economic climatehaving significant impact on the UKconstruction sector and improvementnot widely expected for at least the next12-18 months, many architectural prac-tices are extending their services in abid to add additional value to existingclients and projects. For many, and thesmaller ones in particular, this meansthat in addition to project design theyincreasingly take on responsibilitiesfor overall project management andtherefore the difficulties that this canoften bring.

Many of the more visionary practicesare however turning this to their advan-tage and rather than trying to tackleeverything themselves they bring inand manage specialist contractors. Thismeans that they obtain the expertiseand specialist knowledge required but

at the same time they can concentrateon the areas of the project where theirown creative skills are more valuable,

while still offering a better service totheir clients. This approach also has the

potential to increase practice income a critical factor for survival.

One particular area where this is trueis in the provision of utility, energyand even communication services. Formany years it was a normal practice tosimply sub contract this provision outto the local distributors, leaving it tothem to oversee the process and justaccept the often-inflated costs andextensive lead times. More recentlyhowever, specialist, agile and really pricecompetitive companies have grown tooffer a unique service, by delivering pro-fessional expertise on multi-utility con-nections and by project managing everyaspect of the project delivery.

PA Architects, responsible for the7.5 million Harrow Central Mosquedevelopment, initially went with a local

distributor but they requested a consid-erable size substation be installed on-siteto support the required load. Not only

would the overall architectural designsimply not accommodate this, it wouldhave been significantly more expensive.

As a result of these issues weapproached Maxim Eyes, which ulti-mately secured a practical solution,explained Harshad Patel of PAArchitects. They managed the entire

process and assigned a dedicated personto liaise between the services consult-ants, the main contractor, the variousutility companies, the client and our-selves. And in conjunction with theM&E consultant they scrutinised therequirements and, despite variousobstacles, they not only avoided theneed for the substation but also negoti-ated more favourable terms and dis-counts, resulting in additional savingsof around 150,000. As a result of thissuccess they are now a key part of ourteam for al l future projects.

There are currently 50+ members ofBuildingSMART who benefit fromtraining programmes, networkingevents and access to standards, educa-tional tools and a helpline related toBIM. BREs mission is to extend themembership across the whole construc-tion supply chain.

Professor Tim Broyd of UCL, anexisting BuildingSMART member said:BuildingSMART has been at the fore-front of BIM development for many

years. The UK business environment isdriving rapid increases in the applica-tion of BIM techniques to real buildingand infrastructure projects. Reliablestandards and effective practitioner

training are absolutely vital. BREwill provide a great home to enableBuildingSMART to deliver both.

BRE is currently active in BIM acrossa multitude of projects, not only inhelping clients control energy use intheir buildings but also to understandhow their products, materials andsystems will perform and how theirenvironmental performance could beimproved. BIM also plays a major partin the BRE Trusts recently-announcedFuture Cities programme and its Smart
