Adelphi Circle K Chapter of Kiwanis International Letter from the Editor Hello to my Circle K readers, My name is Meghan Cody and I am the editor of Adelphi University’s chapter of Circle K for this upcoming Service year. This first newsletter is comparable to the idea of taking the summer off and then diving back into classes, like we all will be doing this month. We have forgotten some things while lounging at the beach, or working a few summer jobs. Now we have to dig through what we have learned, what we have done and decide, what is worth telling people about, and what do we need to reread from last semester's courses before our first lecture this semester. In the course of a single school year Circle K has held many events, had representatives at District and Divisional events at both the Circle K and Kiwanis International level. This newsletter is designed to tell you what is important to remember from last semester: from the first large scale event organized by the 20152016 Executive board to one of the most active members of Circle K from this past service year. But there is more to Circle K and this newsletter than giving you facts about our organization we also want to ensure that the fun doesn’t stop with meetings, but is also a part of our writings. At the end of each newsletter there will be at least one fun activity for you the member and a chance to get your photo in the next newsletter.

Adelphi Circle K Chapter of Kiwanis International

Letter from the Editor Hello to my Circle K readers, My name is Meghan Cody and I am the editor of Adelphi University’s chapter of Circle K for this upcoming Service year.

To Due or not to Due

While most clubs don't’ ask their members for more than attendance at events and meetings Circle K is a little different. we ask members to pay dues as part of the club. While they are not required be an active member dues open up a brand new set of doors for our members who chose to pay them.

By paying $8 for the year, you create a brand new network for yourself. Not only are these connections fellow members of your our Circle K Chapter, but it includes their families and friends and all other branches and levels of Kiwanis.

Event Spotlight The highlight and spotlight of this edition of the newsletter. The event was held on a warm and sunny spring day in celebration of not only mothers, but of the nurturing figures in each of our lives. The event’s guests included two prior Adelphi Circle K Presidents: Sophia Conti (2013-2014), Ashley Glitz (2014-2015), and their friends and family. Guests of all ages enjoyed crafts and took plenty of photos in our DIY Photo booth, and competed in Candyland and team games throughout the evening.

The Night was a complete success filled with fun and happy new memories. WE raised $217 for the Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project is a Kiwanis supported organization that has been the promoted project for Kiwanis associated organizations. The cause of this organization could not be more perfect to associate with our Mother’s Day Tea.

All money that is received by the Eliminate project is supply to buy tetanus shots

for mothers in developing nations. The shots are not only beneficial in the initial pregnancy of the recipients, it also protects any of her children born up to ten years after her initial vaccination.

A word from our Vice President Jackie The Mother's Day Tea was great not only because we were able to raise so much money but also because we didn't spend a lot of money on it. We were able to make a fun photo booth and decorate the room on a small budget while still making it super festive and fitting fit our Candy Land theme. Check the next page to see some tricks we used that can help you with your next event!

Photo Booth A photo booth is a great way for the people at your event to have fun and make memories. Instead of spending money renting a professional booth, here are some ideas to make your own:

Backdrop- this is a super simple way to make your photo area look more legit. Place decorations up on a wall where people can take the pictures. You can make the backdrop match your event’s theme and incorporate your group's logo too. For a reusable pop of color you can hang up a plastic table cloth on the wall (and if you're feeling really crazy you can put decorations on top of the table cloth)

Props- The most fun part of the photo booth is choosing the props to use in your picture. Visit your local dollar store you are bound to find some cheap plastic hats or oversized sunglasses you can use. You can talk to members and borrow accessories or props from old Halloween costumes such as bunny ears or devils horns. Making your own props is also a great way to save money, it’s as simple as print - cut -glue and done!

Hashtags- People will most likely use their phones to take the pictures and will upload them to social media create a hashtag for your event that people can use. Not only does it allow you to see pictures from your event, but it is completely free and gets your guests more involved at your event. Be sure you put up signs and remind people to use the hashtag throughout the event. Decorations Balloons- A simple way to bring fun colors into your space. Plain latex balloons filled with helium from a party store it normally costs less than a dollar per balloon. But if you bring balloons to the store they fill them up for 50 cents or less per balloon. Streamers- Dangle them from the ceiling, wrap them around chairs and even tie them to balloons! For less than a dollar you get 80ft of streamer that you can use to decorate in endless ways! DIY your own Decorations! - Our club loves to do this for our events. Depending on how creative you are you can create amazing decorations. Print out pictures for members to color then hang them up on the walls. After all what college kid doesn't love to color? This is not only a great way to prepare for your upcoming event but it allows member to hang out and get to know one another better.

Spring into Service Held on April 6th, Spring into Service was held during our usual meeting time and filled with spring inspired activities. Guests spent time decorating cookies with festive colors and easter candy. While members filled their stomachs they filled our donations bins as well with no-sew blankets, pipe cleaner cat toys, and books and school supplies for help a public library after suffering a large fire. The notable guests of the night included: Walaa Ahmed, Circle K’s District Governor, Edgar Hu, Circle K’s Lieutenant District Governor. The night ended with the announcement of Anthony Belbol as the winner of our Raffle for Relay.

RSA Block Party and Disney Karaoke with PAWS

Radio April 24th was a day filled with service and

enjoyment. The day started with the annual Resident Student Association Block Party which was co-hosted by Circle K International. Along with bringing in a fun

inflatable dodgeball style game, we set up our table and made hope stones for hospice patience with

images and messages from people in attendance at the block party. We spent the morning surrounded

by friends and smiling students who helped to brighten the day of hospice patients with a simple and kind gesture.

The same night Circle K members sang the night away and wished on a few stars along the way. PAWS Radio and Circle K filled the Underground Cafe with music and Disney trivia between songs. The music played all night with classics songs like A Spoonful of Sugar and Hakuna Matata and new favorites like Love is an Open Door and Immortals.

Member Spotlight: Katie Werbeck Katie Werbeck, a freshman communication sciences

and disorders major, was a first year member this past service and was a standout active member. Among other events, Katie attended DCON, Spring into Service, Bobby and the Strays, and the Mother’s Day Tea. Katie devoted countless hours to to each event that she attended, often times being one of the first and one of the last people to leave.

When I asked Kate why she serves she explains that she is influenced by those who had helped her and by her mother. She explained that “I really like to help other and my mother always gave back to the community and only knew how to help people so that was a big influence on me.” She really enjoyed volunteering at Bobby and the Strays, because she understands that animals need love too and that shelter animals don’t always get the love that they need. We wish Katie luck at SUNY New Paltz as she continues her studies and her serve as well.

Organization Spotlight: The Joey Foundation

The Joey Foundation is a non-profit that is centered in our

Division of Kiwanis. The namesake of this organization was born in September 1993 with a terminal case of Aplastic Anemia.

Aplastic anemia is a result of poor bone marrow development that creates deficiencies in all types of blood cells. At the point of

his birth, doctors had predicted that Joey would live less than a year.

Joey defied expectations and lived six and a half years and became an influential person in his own community. He would refer to himself as the “major” of the playroom, taking time to

educate the other patients at the hospital about tests. The strength and care Joy posses is mirrored in the Joey Foundation, founded by Joey’s mother Ann Torcivia in 2004. Ann started her fundraising for children by selling costume jewelry. Now eleven years later The joey Foundation has expanded beyond jewelry

sales. This year alone the Joey function held large scale events such as the Kentucky Derby Joey Style. This race night and family dinner figured retired athletes

and other important figures from Kiwanis acting as the jockey’s for the evening.
