This year, 2014, is a year of celebration for Santos, marking 60 years since we were founded in Adelaide for the purpose of finding oil and gas for South Australia.

Times have certainly changed since 1954, and our company has grown in size from just a handful of people to a workforce of over 3,000 people working in many sites across Australia and Asia.

Being part of the community in which we live and work and supporting community organisations and events is central to Santos’ culture.

This year also commemorates our 16th year as Principal Partner of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, an outstanding orchestra focused on delivering its own brand of energy and high level of performance to all South Australians.

As always, this year’s program from our internationally renowned Orchestra promises another wonderful season of performances, including the Santos Symphony Under the Stars at Elder Park in February.

Welcome to the ASO’s 2014 Season which offers you a year of spectacular concerts featuring some of the greatest orchestral music in the repertoire performed by some of the world’s finest musicians. We are thrilled to announce that in 2014 Arvo Volmer becomes the ASO’s new Principal Guest Conductor. Arvo has been our Chief Conductor for the past ten years and we are delighted that his new title gives us the chance to continue to invite him back to Adelaide often. We look forward to him making music with the Orchestra that he loves, and the Orchestra that loves working with him. Arvo leads a new and exciting conducting team which secures two special musical friendships. Nicholas McGegan becomes the ASO’s first Artist-in-Association. A well-respected Baroque and Classical specialist, in September 2014, he will conduct and curate a two-week long Beethoven Festival. Also, young Australian conductor, Nicholas Carter, joins the ASO family as Associate Guest Conductor. Nicholas is a rising star on the international scene and increasingly in demand in Europe. We’re thrilled that he has chosen to spend some of his valuable time with the ASO in 2014. Do not miss Nicholas’ debut in his new role as he leads the Orchestra and the Adelaide Symphony Chorus in Carl Orff’s iconic choral masterpiece Carmina Burana.

Other highlights in 2014 include the much-awaited return to Adelaide of the piano wizard, Behzod Abduraimov, who promises to dazzle in Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 3. The British conductor Mark Wigglesworth leads the ASO in Mahler’s mighty Fifth Symphony and, at the end of the year, we bring an international cast of singers to Adelaide for Handel’s Messiah. Add to that, a Season Opening Gala which celebrates St Valentine’s Day in style, the irrepressible Guy Noble in a night of music from the James Bond movies, alongside an innovative new creation from Tan Dun at the OzAsia Festival and a major collaboration with the Adelaide Festival. It all demonstrates the range and excellence of what the ASO offers. Nicholas McGegan conducts the ASO’s 2014 Beethoven Festival. McGegan is regarded as “one of the finest Baroque conductors of his generation” (The Independent). In these concerts, McGegan is joined centre stage by the great British pianist Stephen Hough in Beethoven’s heroic Emperor Piano Concerto. Also, the ASO’s Concertmaster, Natsuko Yoshimoto, plays Beethoven’s lyrical Romance in G. The drama of Beethoven’s first Leonore Overture contrasts with the brilliant First Symphony.

Beethoven’s ‘little’ symphony finishes this wonderful program, bookended with his second Leonore Overture. The American pianist and renowned Harvard Professor of Music, Robert Levin, known both for his wit and scholarship, promises to bring an invigorating reading to Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto. Also, this concert provides a rare opportunity to witness Levin’s extraordinary improvisatory skills at the keyboard which involves you – the audience!

Making his ASO debut, Music Director of the San Diego Symphony, Jahja Ling opens our 2014 Master Series with Dvořák’s Bohemian folk music inspired Eighth Symphony. Mendelssohn’s spirited Violin Concerto is performed by the Sibelius Competition winner, young Russian-born German Alina Pogostkina. And we raise the curtain on the season with music which launched Richard Strauss’ composing career - written when he was just 24 - his fiery and dramatic orchestral tone poem Don Juan.

Conductor Arvo Volmer takes us on an Italian inspired musical journey. At the heart of the program is Hector Berlioz’ Harold in Italy. Based on Lord Byron’s poem Child Harolde, this extraordinary symphonic adventure features viola soloist Maxim Rysanov - one of the world’s greatest violists today - portraying Harold the romantic hero. In the first half of the program, Volmer leads the ASO in Mendelssohn’s sun-soaked Fourth symphony – Italian.

As part of the 2014 Adelaide International Cello Festival the ASO welcomes the great American cellist Lynn Harrell to Australia, playing Lutoslawski’s powerful Cello Concerto, which was composed in 1970 for the legendary Russian cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich. Arvo Volmer leads his players in Brahms’ joyful Second Symphony.

Conductor Christopher Seaman opens this concert with Smetana’s evocative tone poem Ma Vlast, and continues the theme of nationhood with Sibelius’ rousing, patriotic Karelia Suite. A mystery concert of sorts as it will also feature the winner of the 2014 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards to be held in Adelaide on Thursday 28 August. The evening ends with Richard Strauss’ powerfully drawn tone poem Death and Transfiguration. With typical understatement, the composer wrote: “It’s a funny thing... but dying is just the way I composed it in Tod und Verklärung…!”

The dynamic young American conductor, Eugene Tzigane makes his Australian debut in one of the 20th century’s great orchestral showpieces - Bartók’s virtuosic Concerto for Orchestra. Also, we celebrate Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe’s 85th birthday with a pair of beautifully atmospheric orchestral works inspired by the Australian sea and landscape. The ASO is joined by cellist Alban Gerhardt in Dvořák’s much-loved Cello Concerto written in the composer’s autumnal years during his tenure at New York’s National Conservatory.

Ives Three Places in New England Tippett Fantasia concertante on a Theme of Corelli Beethoven Symphony No 6 Pastoral

The ASO welcomes back to Adelaide the great Australian violinist Richard Tognetti to play and direct a fascinatingly diverse program as only he can. In this concert Tognetti leads the ASO though an American musical landscape as imagined by Charles Ives, and performs Michael Tippett’s richly-scored Corelli Fantasia. Beethoven’s vivid symphonic depiction of our natural world is brought to life in his evergreen Sixth Symphony - Pastoral.

The lion of the keyboard in de Falla’s Andalusian folk-inspired score – Nights in the Gardens of Spain – is the much-loved Australian pianist, Piers Lane.

“The relentless snare-drum underpins the whole of the 15-minute work as Ravel inexorably builds on the simple tune until he finally releases the pent-up tension with a burst of fireworks.”

To close the ASO’s 2014 Masters Series, British conductor Mark Wigglesworth conducts Gustav Mahler’s mighty Fifth Symphony. The conducting legend, Herbert von Karajan, described hearing this music as a ‘transforming experience’. At the symphony’s emotional heart is the achingly beautiful Adagietto - a love song for Mahler’s wife, Alma - made famous in Visconti’s 1971 film Death in Venice. Virtuoso pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet performs Franz Liszt’s flamboyant Second Piano Concerto.

From Russia with Love! The ASO’s 2014 Season Opening Gala celebrates St Valentine’s Day in real style with a supremely romantic night of Russian music. Tchaikovsky’s beautiful yet stormy musical portrait of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers opens the concert and Russian pianist, Alexander Gavrylyuk, joins the ASO for Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini. Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite Scheherazade is his exotic take on The Arabian Nights which tells the tale of Princess Scheherazade’s dramatic seduction of an evil Sultan.

“I had in view the creation of an orchestral suite in four movements, closely knit by the community of its themes and motives, yet presenting, as it were, a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images and designs of oriental character.”

American conductor Michael Stern makes his ASO debut in this concert of dazzling orchestral masterworks. It opens with Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice - immortalized by Mickey Mouse as an aspiring magician in Walt Disney’s classic movie Fantasia. By way of contrast, Mozart’s late and darkly beautiful Clarinet Concerto is performed by one of the world’s greatest clarinettists, Michael Collins. Aaron Copland’s joyful and tuneful celebration of Appalachia is juxtaposed with Igor Stravinsky’s 1919 suite from his magical ballet score The Firebird.

Hallelujah! Handel’s masterpiece oratorio Messiah continues to bring people together with its sparkling, tender and joyful musical gems. Join us and welcome a stunning cast of international soloists, the Adelaide Chamber Singers and the ASO, conducted by young English Baroque specialist Matthew Halls, for a heart-warming performance in the magnificent Adelaide Town Hall.

Tan dun Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women (Australian Premiere)

Presented by Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra

Tan Dun has captured in this twelve-movement micro film symphony, the musical life and spirit of Nu Shu, a disappearing language with a long vocal tradition created by women for women in Hunan, China in the 13th century. Combining the fields of anthropology, musicology, history and philosophy, Tan Dun weaves heart-rending stories of Nu Shu women through song script and historical environment. Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women was created for harp solo, an instrument Tan Dun selected because of its beautiful feminine sound and distinctive shape, similar to one of the ancient Nu Shu characters. Joining Tan and the ASO will be one of classical music’s great harp ambassadors, solo harpist with the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1994, Elizabeth Hainen.

Arvo Volmer conducts the ASO in an evening of romantic Russian music. The curtain rises on the darkly dramatic world of Tchaikovsky’s opera The Queen of Spades premiered in 1890. St Petersburg resident, Rimsky-Korsakov, wrote his soulful Fantasia in 1887 - a little known song-inspired work of great charm and beauty. And to end the evening, Tchaikovsky’s early symphony Winter Daydreams - music full of Russian elegance and atmosphere - a creation the composer considered to be amongst his finest.

The great city of Prague is at the heart of this concert. “My Praguers understand me...” so said Mozart. Not surprising, since the city was the scene of some of his greatest musical triumphs including The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Mozart is centre-stage in this concert as Howard Shelley directs the ASO from the keyboard in one of the composer’s most sublime piano concertos. Also, a great symphony by one of Prague’s greatest musical sons - Dvořák, his joyful Sixth - packed full of folk tunes and Bohemian spirit.

“If I were to name the composer whose music is the most perfect embodiment of the Hungarian spirit, I would answer, Zoltan Kodály. Kodály’s composing activity is rooted not only in the Hungarian soil, but also in the deep inner reason of his unshakable faith and trust in his people…” so wrote the great Hungarian composer, Bela Bartók. Gérard Korsten leads the ASO in music which shimmers with orchestral colour, infectious rhythms and folk melodies. The concert comes to an energetic climax with some of Brahms’ most wonderful Hungarian Dances.

To contrast, Yoshimoto play/directs the ASO strings in Shostakovich’s autobiographical and powerfully tragic Chamber Symphony.

A late concerto and an early symphony. The pianist Kathryn Selby joins the ASO for a performance of Mozart’s final piano concerto; composed in his last year, 1791, marking the summit of Mozart’s creative genius. The ASO’s Associate Guest Conductor, Nicholas Carter, leads the Orchestra in Schumann’s early romantic First Symphony - his glorious Spring Symphony.

Legendary figures from the worlds of classical and electronic music, improvisation and noise join forces for Tectonics Adelaide - a two day program curated by conductor Ilan Volkov. In a program of orchestral, ensemble, chamber and solo performances, Tectonics Adelaide explores the intersection of western classical traditions, radical composition and improvisation. Featuring performances by Aki Takahashi, Oren Ambarchi, Jon Rose, Soundstream, Speak Percussion and more. Tectonics Adelaide continues at Queen’s Theatre on Monday 10 March 2.30 - 11pm.

James Ledger’s Two Memorials is music which beautifully unites the spirits and sounds of two great but very different composers: John Lennon and Anton Webern. Brett Dean’s Pastoral Symphony celebrates the greatness and beauty of our natural world but also has a timely warning. “I find it increasingly difficult,” writes Dean,”to separate my love of the sounds of the natural world from an immense and growing sense of loss. This piece, then, is about glorious birdsong, the threat that it faces, the loss, and the soulless noise that we’re left with when they’re all gone.”

“Brett dean’s Pastoral Symphony begins with birdsong, moves into mechanized madness and ends with a sorrowing viola, like a prayer beside a grave, only this grave contains the entire planet and everything on it.”

A new multi-media work for orchestra, narrator and video is a tribute to the life of the great Australian sportsperson, Sir Donald Bradman. This specially commissioned and innovative score celebrates Bradman’s achievements on the cricketing field, his influence on Australian sporting history, and the man’s humble role as a national hero and Australian icon.

The ASO continues its 85th birthday celebrations of one of Australia’s greatest composers - Peter Sculthorpe. Memento Mori evokes the silent tragedy of Easter Island: great stone heads remain but there is no surviving history to tell of their meaning. Also, music by the great French composer Henri Dutilleux who died in 2013. Natsuko Yoshimoto is the violin soloist in the magical and nocturne-like Sur le même accord.

We welcome back charismatic actor and singer Jay Laga’aia as he presents our Meet the Orchestra concert as part of ASO Adventures. Featured in ASO in Schools we present Tigers and Teapots in which primary school students workshop and then perform as a choir alongside members of the ASO. And our much loved production of Edward and Edwina the Emus is back by popular demand, performing to students at schools, kindergartens and vacation care programs all over Adelaide. We are delighted to welcome two outstanding Australian music educators, Richard Gill OAM and Graham Abbott, to the ASO to deliver what will be inspirational workshop-performances to secondary students as part of our Learning LIVE concerts. And following the success of the ASO’s Open Rehearsals for Schools in 2013 we have included three Schools Open Rehearsals in 2014 which allow students to watch and hear the ASO live at work on the big day of a concert. 2014 also sees the development of a key partnership with the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide. ASO Professional Pathways aims to provide a platform for young emerging artists exploring ways into a career in classical music. Professional Pathways includes Orchestral Traineeships, Learning Traineeships, Big Rehearsals and a unique Artist Insight Series. Opportunities for adults to engage in ASO Learning include two ABC Classic FM’s Keys to Music concerts and three public Open Rehearsals. As part of the ASO’s 2014 Beethoven Festival we offer community musicians the chance to rehearse Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony alongside ASO musicians, led by one of the world’s leading conductors, Nicholas McGegan. We invite you to join us on this adventure and enjoy the benefits that both music learning and music making can offer!

Actor and singer Jay Laga’aia returns in 2014 to present a vibrant show, including the much-loved Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. Families will discover the unique musical signatures that represent each character in the story. Children can participate through song and movement as they are introduced to the instruments and sounds of the orchestral families.

Our much-loved adaptation of the popular books, Edward the Emu and Edwina the Emu by Sheena Knowles and Rod Clements, returns in 2014. Composed by Peter Webb, the delightful music score features nine musicians from the ASO. Two actors from Giggly Kids bring Edward and Edwina to life using full-sized emu puppets. Co-produced by ASO and Country Arts SA and directed by Ninian Donald.
