Spacious parklands fringe the city centre,

home to over 100 restaurants offering mouth-

watering international cuisine, bars and clubs

to entertain, and a retail precinct to cater to

any shopping budget. The temperate weather,

proximity to some of Australia’s best wine and

seafood regions, and variety of festivals and

activities will satisfy both the adventurous or

indulgent travellers.

It’s a city whose dedication to refined taste

extends beyond the plate and to the arts, in all

its forms. It’s the ideal place to base yourself

as you explore South Australia. The city is

just 10 minutes from the home of Penfolds'

Grange, 20 minutes from the beaches and

hills, a leisurely hour’s drive from the Barossa

and a little under an hour from McLaren Vale.

Everything is within such easy reach that you’ll

never want to leave.

The architecture from early Colonists

who first arrived in 1836 has been well

preserved, with the living heritage of

their stone buildings giving Adelaide its

elegant air. It’s Australia’s cultural capital

– a festival city home to the Adelaide

Festival, WOMADelaide, Adelaide Fringe,

Feast Festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival,

Adelaide Festival of Ideas and Adelaide

Fashion Festival. It becomes a stage for

numerous world-class sporting events held

each year, including the Santos Tour Down

Under, World Tennis Challenge and Clipsal

500 Adelaide.

Discover local culture and learn indigenous

language from the Kaurna (pronounced Gar-

na) people, who are the traditional owners

and custodians of the Adelaide Plains. Kaurna

country stretches from Crystal Brook in the

north to Cape Jervis in the south, the Mount

Lofty Ranges in the east to the waters of Gulf

St Vincent in the west.

“Marni ninna budni Kaurna yertaanna. Ninna

padnipadnima, bukki mukabando.

It’s good that you came to Kaurna land. As you

walk, remember the past.”

Whether you’re already here or just starting to

plan your visit, this guide will help you find the

very best of Adelaide.

AdelaideWelcome to

Moseley Square, Glenelg

Adelaide is friendly and vibrant, surrounded by rolling hills, world-class beaches, with an unhurried lifestyle hard to find in other cities.

“One of the best holidays I’ve ever had in South Australia was in and around Adelaide… the layout; the beautiful Adelaide Oval; the beaches so close to the city; the ease of getting around; the friendliness of the people.” Jenny, Rosewater, South Australia.

Drive on Left in AustraliaTake care when driving on Australian roads. Be sure to drive on the left-hand side of two-way roads. Obey the road signs and remember that speed limits are strictly enforced in Australia. You must not drive if your blood alcohol level is 0.05 per cent or higher, nor are you permitted to use a hand-held mobile phone when driving. When travelling long distances plan your journey to include several rest breaks and ensure you have enough fuel for your journey. For your safety and enjoyment slow down, relax, and enjoy the pace of Adelaide.

There are a lot of wheelchair accessible buses in the Adelaide fleet but, unfortunately, these are not on fixed schedules, and you’ll need to call the service provider to find out when they run. Start by calling the InfoLine's toll free number on 1800 182 160 for route and time information and ask for the contact phone numbers for the relevant service. January also brings the World Tennis Challenge, where current and past heroes of the game compete over three action-packed nights.

In March, Adelaide showcases a whole host of event favourites, including the Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe, WOMADelaide and Clipsal 500 Adelaide. The city atmosphere is electric.

Adelaide’s event calendar has something for everyone, with events such as Targa Adelaide, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, OzAsia Festival, Adelaide Fashion Festival, Feast Festival, Australian International 3 Day Event and Come Out.

Regional food and wine festivals, including the BankSA Sea and Vines Festival on the Fleurieu Peninsula and the Barossa Gourmet Weekend, provide unique gourmet experiences.

Adelaide has an ever-growing selection of top eateries serving SA-grown produce and boasting an impressive local wine list.

With a climate that’s right for al fresco dining most of the year, Adelaide has a high quality food and wine culture with a mix of fine dining, casual cafés and great pubs and bars. With influences from the Mediterranean, Asia and modern Australia, Adelaide has a host of options to whet your appetite. Many dining spots also serve fresh local goods: sumptuous oysters and prawns from Eyre Peninsula, homemade cheeses from the Barossa and seasonal produce from the Adelaide Hills.

Adelaide is the heart of South Australia’s booming wine industry and the closest vineyard is just a cork toss from the city centre. Located at the end of North Terrace, the National Wine Centre of Australia showcases the nation’s wine industry and is the perfect starting point for a great South Australian wine journey. It features a wine tasting gallery and interactive exhibits that cover all aspects of winemaking. Just 15 minutes away, Penfold’s Magill Estate is home to Australia’s most famous wine – Grange. Drop in for a tasting or join a tour of the historic winery.

You’ll find entire streets devoted to dining. Stylish Rundle Street is known for its al fresco-style

cafés. Gouger Street is home to a selection of Asian eateries and the place for great seafood and fantastic steaks. North Adelaide’s Melbourne and O’Connell streets are both recognised for their eclectic mix of funky pubs, fine dining and cafés. On the coast, there’s Henley Beach Square, Jetty Road and Holdfast Shores at Glenelg and Jetty Road at Brighton – all great hangouts if you want to unwind in a relaxed atmosphere by the beach. The Parade, Norwood, on the city’s east, houses some of Adelaide’s favourite little eateries. On the south side of the city there’s a great selection of restaurants along Unley and King William roads, and while you’re in the area, visit Haigh’s Chocolates – the only Australian chocolate-maker that still imports and roasts its own beans.

Situated in the heart of the CBD, the Adelaide Central Market is a local foodie institution, trading since 1869 when a small group of industrious market gardeners carted their home-grown fruit and vegetables to the site between Grote and Gouger streets and sold all their produce within a matter of hours. Today, it’s the biggest undercover produce market in the Southern Hemisphere, abuzz with colour, passionate personalities, and delicious tastes and smells.

In 2006, the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market opened its gates, with growers and producers from all over the state bringing premium goods to the city. Cooking demonstrations and kids’ cooking classes add to the market’s lively atmosphere.

Arts & CULTUrE

See the largest collection of Aboriginal artefacts and experience a vibrant art scene.

Adelaide is renowned for its creative culture – visit one of the many traditional and contemporary art galleries, including the Art Gallery of South Australia and Jam Factory. Or follow the Public Art Walking Trail and pick up a copy of the Aboriginal Attractions Guide to see the creative and cultural highlights of the city.

The Australian Aboriginal Cultures Gallery, located in the South Australian Museum on North Terrace, is home to the largest collection of Aboriginal artefacts in the Southern Hemisphere. Here, accredited Aboriginal guides provide a rare insight into their ancient ceremonies and customs.

Close by on Grenfell Street, Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute is Australia’s oldest Aboriginal-owned and managed multi-arts centre and exhibits the work of both established and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Just 20 minutes south of the city, in Marion, is Warriparinga – a known traditional camp site for the Kaurna people. Here, you’ll find the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre and the beginning of the Tjilbruke Dreaming Tracks, which follows the coastline to Cape Jervis.

The Living Kaurna Cultural Centre offers guided group tours, educational programs for schools on Kaurna culture and the wetlands environment, a Kaurna heritage display, Kaurna arts and cultural workshops and performances. Twenty-five minutes west of the city, at Port Adelaide, Better World Arts gallery specialises in fine Aboriginal art and beautiful handmade rugs, cushions and jewellery.

Nightlife &ENTErTAiNMENTAdelaide is dotted with an assortment of venues to unwind or wind up, to chill or to party.

The city’s hot spots for nightlife are the pubs, clubs and bars of the Rundle Street area in the east and Hindley Street, Light Square and Gouger Street in the west. Add theatres, big cinemas and the Adelaide Casino and you’ve got a huge variety of choices for a great night out. If you’re not sure where to go, ask a local or just follow the crowds on any given weekend.

The biggest shows come to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre in Hindmarsh, as well as the theatres of Adelaide Festival Centre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide Town Hall and the Lion Arts Centre. These venues are used by South Australia’s opera, theatre and contemporary dance companies and touring arts groups. Throughout greater Adelaide, hundreds of pubs and clubs host musicians, bands, comedians and DJs.

Cinemas range from megaplexes to art-deco beauties operated by local organisations and

art-house cinemas in the city and surrounds. If you’re around in summer, pack a picnic and enjoy the Moonlight Cinema at Botanic Park, choose between classic flicks to the latest blockbusters.

In the historic Adelaide Railway Station, Adelaide Casino offers an exciting combination of bars, restaurants, live music and gaming facilities.

How to find out what’s onCheck The Advertiser’s ‘Hit’ lift-out in Thursday’s newspaper, while each Saturday edition carries ads and listings for arts, live music, comedy and concerts. Cinema ads appear every day under ‘Amusements’.

Pick up the city’s great free street magazines – Rip It Up (weekly) and dB (fortnightly) – for comprehensive coverage of gigs, concerts, reviews and interviews. The gay and lesbian fortnightly paper blaze also carries what’s on info.

Check with ticketing agencies BASS, VenueTix and Ticketek for upcoming performances and sporting events. All have sales outlets around Adelaide and South Australia.

Website www.glamadelaide.com.au is dedicated to promoting a great selection of all things hip and happening around the state.

SHOPPiNGWith a host of shopping hubs about town, Adelaide is the perfect place for an afternoon browse or a full-day splurge.

All you need to know for a spot of retail therapy in Adelaide is that good shopping starts in the heart of the city and spreads in all directions. Rundle Mall is the retail backbone of the CBD, with international and national flagship stores and boutiques, local institutions and speciality shops, cafés, elegant arcades, buskers, flower stalls, sculptures and seven-day trading. The adjoining Rundle Street is home to numerous designer boutiques and high-end fashion stores. In the centre of the square mile, the Adelaide Central Market is always fun. With dozens of fresh food and speciality stalls, Asian grocery stores and a host of excellent cafés and food halls, you’re sure to find any number of unique South Australian products.

King William Road in Hyde Park is great for high-end fashion, while Glen Osmond Road in Eastwood is the centre for seconds and clearance shops. The Parade in Norwood is much loved by locals and visitors with stacks of quirky shops and boutiques, while Magill Road around Norwood and Maylands is known for elegant European antiques through to funky 70s design pieces.

In North Adelaide, Melbourne Street is renowned for designer Australian fashion and great coffee. Beachside, the bustling Jetty Road in Glenelg is a good excuse to mix shopping with a stroll on the beach, while Harbour Town in West Beach contains over 140 quality brand outlets.

Burnside Village, in the leafy suburb of Glenside, just five minutes from the city, offers a selection of exclusive retailers, including the finest fashion, fresh foods, unique gifts and homewares. Newly redeveloped, the village is Adelaide’s hottest new destination for world-class shopping. Shoppers can wander from landscaped outdoor garden areas into single-level air conditioned malls with comfort and ease.

There are also popular suburban Westfield shopping centres in Tea Tree Plaza, West Lakes and Marion (the largest shopping centre in SA), with enough shops to trawl for the entire day.

Shopping hours City and metropolitan shops are open

seven days a week. As a general rule,

shops are open Monday–Saturday

9am–5pm and Sunday 11am–5pm.

City stores are open until 7pm

weeknights (for participating retailers

only) and Friday until 9pm, while

in the suburbs you’ll find late-night

shopping Thursday until 9pm.

MArKETSHome to the world famous Adelaide Central Market in the heart of the city (the largest undercover market in the Southern Hemisphere), Adelaide has spread its foodie-passion throughout the state.

Every Sunday from 9am–1pm, the Wayville Showgrounds, just south of the city, is home to the Adelaide Showground Farmers Markets, a showcase for fresh, seasonal and regional produce. Operating since 2006, the market has fast become an Adelaide favourite. Bag some delicious goodies for the road, or sample while you’re there.

Regional areas have also embraced the market phenomenon, with weekend markets at Willunga, the Adelaide Hills and Victor Harbor building up quite a following. Make the journey down the coast to the Fleurieu Peninsula to find local fruit and veg, artisan breads and sauces, and handmade chocolates and cakes. Goolwa Wharf Markets and Barossa Farmers Markets are also worth a look.

Aside from local food produce, Adelaide’s markets also embrace other aspects of the city’s vibrant culture. The Gilles Street Markets are a popular style institution, showcasing Adelaide’s best in fashion, with everything from well-loved vintage pieces, new clothing items and a host of local designers selling their collections.

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Wander through the Gepps Cross Treasure Markets, held every Sunday morning, looking for treasures that locals sell from the back of their cars.

Sample the best local produce, find top fashion buys and soak up the city’s vibrant market scene.

Parks &GArDENSHead to one of the city’s many picturesque parks and gardens to take a stroll, enjoy a picnic or just relax on the grass and watch the city bustle by.

Adelaide is known as a scenic, green city, completely surrounded by a border of parklands. Laid out by Colonel William Light in his original plan for the city in 1837, this ring of greenery contains 29 parks and covers 45 per cent of the city area. Since the earliest days of the colony, the parks have been preserved and enhanced as an important natural asset to the city.

Each park has its own unique character. There are formal rose gardens, olive groves, wide spaces with grand native and exotic trees, playgrounds and lakes, and sporting fields for football, cricket, petanque and archery. There

are walking trails, quiet spaces and gathering places throughout this network of greenery.

Beyond the inner city, the suburbs of Adelaide are also filled with rich greenery, with many fine examples of natural bushland shared with residential areas. By the sea, in the foothills and along rivers, these important natural spaces protect vegetation, landscapes, wildlife and birds, as well as providing grounds for a wide range of activities and facilities. Their proximity to the city is a constant surprise to visitors and they are among our most treasured secrets.

Botanic ParkBotanic Park is one of Adelaide’s most-loved parks and a sensational venue for Adelaide’s annual international music festival WOMADelaide in March. The park is situated between the Adelaide Botanic Garden and the Adelaide Zoo. You can enter from Hackney Road into Plane Tree Drive, which forms a drive-through loop around the park. There is on-site parking, plenty of shady trees and an interpretive trail.

rymill ParkRymill Park is located on the eastern fringe of the city centre. Here, hire a rowboat for a paddle on the lake or stretch out on a blanket and watch the ducks. You’ll find large shady trees, a rose garden, barbecue facilities, a playground and a kiosk serving great coffee.

Elder ParkElder Park sits on the banks of the River Torrens alongside the Adelaide Festival Centre and is one of Adelaide’s most popular outdoor spots. You can hire paddleboats and bicycles and just across the river are the beautiful gardens of Pinky Flat, the Memorial Drive Tennis Complex and Adelaide Oval.

Peace ParkPeace Park incorporates the much-revered Cross of Sacrifice, the Prince Henry Gardens, Ester Lipman Gardens and Pioneer Women’s Memorial Gardens. It’s located just across the River Torrens where Sir Edwin Smith Avenue and War Memorial Drive converge with King William Road.

Adelaide–Himeji GardenThis beautiful Japanese garden is a walled oasis of peace and tranquillity. Himeji blends two classic Japanese styles, the lake and mountain garden and the dry garden, and celebrates Adelaide’s sister-city relationship with the ancient Japanese city of Himeji. The park sits at the corners of Glen Osmond Road, South Terrace and Hutt Road.

river Torrens Linear ParkThis is the largest hills-to-coast park in Australia. You can walk or cycle along a bitumen pathway lining the banks of the River Torrens, running from Henley Beach in the west, through the city to the Tea Tree Plaza interchange north-east of the city. With many bridges along its length, it’s easy to

explore short or long loops along the park’s span. Extensive planting of trees and shrubs create a sense of space being distanced from civilisation.

Victoria ParkHome to the internationally-acclaimed motor sports street circuit used for the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, Victoria Park or Bakkabakkandi (meaning ‘galloping’ in reference to the racecourse that used to be here) comprises a bicycle path, a sweat track, walking paths and an old olive grove. Victoria Park is framed by Fullarton Road, Wakefield Road and East Terrace on the eastern fringe of the city.

Bonython ParkBonython Park is a fabulous, meandering park alongside the River Torrens, with a lake for model boats, two playgrounds, a bike path, a nature trail, barbecue facilities and a kiosk. The park is easily accessible located along Port Road in the north-west corner of the city, with on-site parking.

Garden islandThe Garden Island Ships’ Graveyard in the north arm of Port River gives visitors a chance to experience the waterways and a historic part of South Australia’s early maritime history. Just 20 minutes north-west of the city centre, Garden Island forms part of one of the world’s largest and most diverse ship graveyards. Boasting the remains of sailing ships, steamers, motor vessels, ferries, barges, dredgers and pontoons, the site provides a unique glimpse into our past. The trail is marked by three on-water signs near the main group of wrecks, as well as two on-land signs at the Garden Island boat ramp. Although a few wrecks can be seen by car, paddling a canoe or kayak will reveal a wealth of interesting relics – you might even spy the gorgeous, friendly river dolphins.

ACCOMMODATiONRanging from boutique hotels and apartments, to seaside resorts and heritage cottages, Adelaide has it all.

Although most accommodation options are concentrated in the city, there’s also a great selection along the coast, as well as hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts throughout the greater metropolitan area.

The international hotels offer all room styles, from apartments and suites to luxury penthouses with city, parkland and coastal views. The growing number of serviced apartments

reflects the demand for self-contained city accommodation, popular with families and longer stay visitors. Self-contained heritage cottages and houses are also available throughout the city.

Adelaide’s popular backpacker and youth hostels have a reputation for quality facilities, while well presented and conveniently located caravan parks (many with modern en-suite cabins) are another alternative for families and independent travellers.

Choices along the coast include top class hotels, motels, apartments, beach houses, guesthouses and backpacker hostels. There’s a wide choice in the popular beachside suburb of Glenelg.

They enjoy a reputation for being a progressive, innovative community, with a lifestyle the envy of their neighbours.

Nineteenth century architecture is evident with Norwood’s superb heritage buildings, beautiful houses in tree-lined streets, pubs-a-plenty, elegant commercial estates and grand churches. There’s a plethora of perfectly turned out pocket parks where locals congregate regularly. In the 20th century, European immigrants, particularly from Italy, moved in to the neighbourhood, bringing together cultures and traditions and energetically revitalising the area.

Today, Norwood has two parallel ‘arteries’: The Parade and Magill Road – both offer excellent shopping and dining experiences. On The Parade, sidewalk cafés with outdoor tables seat a crowd of regular patrons where the aroma of fresh coffee fills the air. Businesses nearby

include award-winning florists; hair and beauty salons; quality book, music and sports stores; the legendary Vari’s Italian grocery; a cinema complex; wine bar; and an extensive collection of exclusive designer fashion boutiques, interspersed with favourite high street brands.

Magill Road, a five-minute walk through the leafy streets to the north, is well-known for its antique and design stores, including original and vintage fashion, contemporary furniture and quirky bric-a-brac. Try Khai Liew Design, Mid Century Modern, Eureka Antiques and Louis Bond for desirables and inspiration.

Three much-loved events are held in Norwood each year: Magill Road Alive in April; the Adelaide Fashion Festival in October; and the open-to-everyone Norwood Christmas Pageant in late November.

PortADELAiDETake a deep breath of fresh sea air and get ready to experience South Australia’s maritime heartland.

At Port Adelaide, find evocative seafaring history, a waterside heritage precinct, a colourful pub scene and the world’s only inner-city dolphins – all only 20 minutes from the CBD.

Take a walk along the docks and through the old Port to experience the ambience and observe some of the finest colonial and Victorian buildings in Australia. Self-guided tours are available, including ‘Kids Port Walks’, or book a local volunteer tour guide.

The Maritime Museum, Railway Museum and Aviation Museum are all on Lipson Street and open daily… check out the spitfire, climb the old ketch and ride the steam train.

Next to the iconic lighthouse, the Sunday market is popular with those hunting antiques, books and bric-a-brac. ‘The Port’ has many hidden treasures, including the South American-inspired Jackalope Gallery and a colourful range of Aboriginal art and gifts at Better World Arts.

Find great local cafés and, of course, pubs – this is a port. Many of the local establishments serve

up a swag of history as well as great food and atmosphere; you can sample them all on the self-guided Port Heritage Pub Trail. A visit to Port Adelaide wouldn’t be complete without stopping at the Port Dock Brewery Hotel for a beer.

River boat cruises show another fascinating view of the area – the famous Port River dolphins are well-known for following the boats. Dolphins can often be seen in shallow protected waters and the Port River Dolphin Trail identifies ideal viewing opportunities for those with their own transport.

Kayaking is another way in which you can explore the rich marine environment, the abandoned wrecks of the ships’ graveyard and the vast number of mangrove-lined tidal creeks.

After your visit to Port Adelaide, be sure to see popular seaside Semaphore, only two kilometres west of the Port.

Make your first port of call the Port Adelaide Visitor Information Centre, 66 Commercial Road, Port Adelaide. Open daily 9am–5pm, closed Christmas Day. Phone (08) 8405 6560 or freecall 1800 629 888 (country/interstate callers), or visit www.portenf.sa.gov.au/tourism

SEMAPHOrESemaphore’s white sands, family-friendly shallows and colourful foreshore make for a classic Adelaide beachside escape.

Semaphore Road – one of Adelaide’s widest boulevards – is finding a new sense of style.

Funky boutiques have opened their doors alongside famous ‘old salt’ pubs, contemporary cafés are serving al fresco and the delicious aroma of fish and chips fills the night air – fine dining has undoubtedly come to Semaphore.

Enjoy a tremendous sense of space. Semaphore beach is deep and white and backed by low dunes rather than tall buildings, so you get a sense of being kilometres from anywhere.

There’s a famous expanse of green foreshore – two kilometres of public space preserved and reserved for what beach holidays are supposed to be all about – having fun. Here play minigolf, slither down the water slide, ride on the vintage carousel or ferris wheel, buy ice creams and fish and chips from a beachside kiosk, cycle on the coast path, and ride on the steam train that puffs two kilometres along the shoreline.

Semaphore’s maritime history isn’t confined to a museum, nor hidden by developments.

• Absolute beachfront location • 5 minutes from Semaphore • 15 minutes west of Adelaide city • Deluxe self-contained cabins • Caravan and camping sites • Swimming pools • Laundry facilities • Internet access • Playground and BBQ area

Even from the end of the jetty you can see the largest working carousel in the Southern Hemisphere, Timeball Tower; the glorious 1920s Palais bathing pavilion; the historical buildings along Semaphore Road; and the Ozone Theatre building.

Discover a colourful shopping experience, with a diverse range of shops doing their own thing, creating one of the most colourful shopping experiences in South Australia. Check out the edgy mix of old, alternative and new – the street where ‘boutique’ sits beside ‘bargain’, ‘chic’ beside ‘cheeky’, and ‘contemporary vintage’ beside shops that have been serving the locals for decades.

Enjoy high quality food in a unique beachside atmosphere where fine dining and great pubs mix together with quirky cafés and spots where you can enjoy good old fashioned fish and chips by the beach. Semaphore is fast becoming one of Adelaide’s premier eating out hot spots.

Stay longer, discover more and wake to the sound of waves. In the area you’ll find luxury apartments, bed and breakfasts, a caravan park, hotel accommodation in pubs and even a converted church.

Regular events include the Kite Festival, Summer Carnival, New Year’s Eve and Australia Day fireworks, Greek Festival, and Semaphore Music Festival.

After visiting Semaphore, check out nearby historic Port Adelaide and its attractions.
