Welcome to Barry Humphries' 2015 Adelaide Cabaret Festival - There Are No Rules.

Transcript of Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2015

On my first visit to Adelaide as a student actor in 1953, I was told

after I had observed how quiet the city was that “Adelaide seethes

underneath”. It was a striking and memorable phrase and the image

has stayed with me to this day. I have recently been granted an

opportunity to make Adelaide seethe on the surface and I am now an

honoured curator of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival which is fast gaining

an international reputation amongst the world’s finest entertainers.I have assembled some of my

favourite artistes in the fields of music and comedy to appear with me at

the many venues of Adelaide Festival Centre in what was once quaintly called the “Athens of the South”.

Speaking as a regular visitor to the Adelaide of the North I can vouch for

the accuracy of that epithet.

BARRY HUMPHRIESArtistic Director

Sensuous sirens, charismatic crooners, scandalous storytellers and jovial jesters… they are hilarious, naughty, sexy, addictive, outrageous and dangerous. This game of cabaret has no rules… in fact cabaret loathes, abhors, excoriates, detests and ignores rules – as do I – which is the reason I still have an uncanny ability to offend. When I recently whimsically declared that I was banning the F word, I succeeded at one stroke in offending several stand-up comedians who felt I was robbing them of their total vocabulary. Please join us for an adrenalin fuelled ride into euphoria, romance and turpitude. We need your energy and infatuation.I can guarantee that there will be some very disreputable moments that you won’t want to miss but there will be beauty, wit and astonishment that you will always remember. Be assured I will be there as your devoted guide. My pleasure…

FROCK UP POSSUMS!

The Government is pleased to support the Adelaide Cabaret Festival which is keeping the festival party going in Adelaide over winter. What better way to spend a chilly June evening than a hot night at the Cab Fest?In much the same way as the Adelaide Festival of the Arts was pioneered in Adelaide and then replicated around the country, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival is now being emulated around Australia. The Adelaide version is still the original and the best and is now the most comprehensive cabaret festival in the world. This year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival is reaching even higher notes under the artistic direction of the legendary Barry Humphries. An international performing arts icon, Mr Humphries’ leadership of the Festival has received wide spread national and international coverage which is not only promoting the Adelaide Cabaret Festival but also promoting our city and our State to an international audience.

Come to the Cabaret, enjoy this heart felt art form; share the intimacy of artists’ thoughts in word and song as they communicate directly to you, their inner most feelings about the world around them.Cabaret is ‘entertainment with attitude’ that can be hilarious, political, naughty and also nice, making you cry and laugh at the same time. It’s a game that everyone can play whatever age or inclination. There is something for everyone in this festival.Sound the trumpets for the biggest and best cabaret festival in the world. Encourage friends here, interstate and overseas to experience this fun festival in adorable Adelaide – “The City of Fabulous Festivals”. I thank my fellow Festival Advocacy Committee members Amanda Blair, Jane Doyle, Zannie Flanagan, Matt Gilbertson, Denise Jones, Paul Kitching, Amanda Pepe and Catherine Blanch.

Established in 2001 Adelaide Cabaret Festival has become a shining light in the dark of winter. In its 15th year the event has grown to become one of the most respected, renowned Cabaret Festivals in the world. Under the guardianship of Australia’s most famous cabaret export, Barry Humphries, the Festival has come of age.Our dedicated audiences have become aficionados versed in the ways of Wiemar, Parisian chanteuses and the great American song book. They have also borne witness to the evolution of Australia’s own cabaret scene. We are extremely proud to present a record number of local artists many of whom had their first taste of cabaret here and have since travelled the stages of the world refining their craft to return to an adoring local crowd.Much thanks to our wonderful sponsors, our valuable allies for this annual madcap winter trek and to the staff and volunteers who keep us all on course. Congratulations to all the artists – we look forward to the celebrations.

Concert pianist Anna Goldsworthy’s deeply-felt memoir, Piano Lessons, comes to glorious musical life. The award-winning book, which recounts her musical awakening as a young girl, struck a deep chord with critics, readers and music lovers on its 2009 release.Goldsworthy stars in this stage adaptation about the intriguing relationship between a young pianist and her Russian teacher. Inspiring and challenging her young charge in equal measure they work through a program of sublime piano pieces, including selections from Mozart, Liszt and Chopin.

Making its world premiere at Adelaide Cabaret Festival, The Front is a new Australian musical following the people and events surrounding the bloodiest battle in ANZAC history. The story follows two perspectives, through the experience of the diggers and nurses who were there and relived by surviving relatives almost a hundred years later.Featuring a stellar Australian cast and accompanied by a live ensemble – be swept away by the soaring romantic melodies and a poignant human story.“So begins a piece of music theatre that...

JOHN O’HARAIT WAS WORTH THE WEIGHT

DEDICA IONSDAVID AUCI

Inspired by Richard Mercer’s long-running late-night radio program Love Song Dedications, John O’Hara (Cats, Wicked, Rock of Ages) inhabits multiple characters who call in to share their stories with the Love God.We experience both the heartache and the triumphs as they request classic love songs from artists including Whitney Houston, Aerosmith, Lionel Ritchie, Michael Bolton, Leonard Cohen and more.

He has sung at over a thousand weddings, countless receptions and the inaugural Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2001.David Gauci is perhaps Adelaide’s most unsung singer and unrecognised talent – ironic, because he stands out in a crowd. It’s time to discover the local with Josh Groban’s voice and Bruce Willis’ hair.A musical chronicle of the unknown extraordinary life of the guy who probably sang at your mother’s wedding and your grandmother’s funeral!

“Part Mick Jagger, part Johnny Depp, O’Hara’s rock star performance had the ladies – both on

stage and in the audience – swooning.” “David Gauci has a voice that soars

and a wit that engages all ages”

The Narelles have had their ups and downs – they’ve struggled with drug addiction, battled the press,

struggled with drug addiction, been defrauded of all their money and struggled with drug addiction.

But they never stopped making music.Whether you remember The Narelles or not,

this is a gig you won’t forget.

Rock ‘n’ roll your way through a chronological tour of Memphis’ finest and celebrate the timeless music released by Sun Records in the early 1950s, bringing to life the music of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Howlin’ Wolf and many others. Sun Rising navigates the famous tales and hilarious anecdotes from the record company with ‘perpetual optimism’ paying homage to both the artists and celebrated owner/producer, Sam Phillips.

Front man for the evocative soundscapes of The Cruel Sea and the hard edged pub rock of The Beasts of Bourbon, collaborator on the Tex, Don and Charlie outings, compadre to Tim Rogers on the TnT project and more recently fronting the rock band The Ape, Tex is back! With fellow Dark Horses – Charlie Owen, Joel Silbersher, Murray Paterson, Stephen Hadley and Gus Agars, Tex performs some of the finest tunes your ears will hear in 2015.

SPECIAL VICTIM

ART LITE

HANNAHGADS Y

Stories of hope, loss, white privilege, velvet rage and effeminate ennui with song and sting.Join award-winning performer Ash Flanders as he takes the world, and himself, to task. From the river Nile in Egypt to the Sphinx Hotel in Geelong, from Charles Manson to King Charles Spaniels, Special Victim bombards you with deep thoughts from a determinedly shallow victim.Come laugh at his pain.

Armed with an art history degree and a keen eye for absurd detail, comedian Hannah Gadsby will take you on a whistle stop tour of her favourite art. She loves nothing more than teaching people about art and then undermining all that learny goodness with jokes and general foolery. You will learn and then forget that you did.

Triumphantly returning to the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Frisky and Mannish are back with a veritable

cornucopia of musical mayhem. Since 2008 the duo have been peddling their peculiar

brand of popmusicy-seriocomic-mashparodic-vaudevillian-sketchcabaret-bapsbotty-infotainment all over the world,

appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (to great acclaim), the Sydney Opera House (yes, the real one), Melbourne Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival,

PURE BLONDE

WHELAN BROWNE

Do blondes have more fun?Five glorious years ago Christie premiered her first one-woman show Britney Spears: The Cabaret at Adelaide Cabaret Festival. The same talented team of Helpmann-Award winning director Dean Bryant (Sweet Charity) and musical maestro Mathew Frank (Drowsy Chaperone) are back to explore the widely underappreciated blonde song book. In the tradition of Saturday Night Live meets Alan Bennett, Christie brings to life a cavalcade of blondes in a hilarious cabaret comedy.

Composer John Thorn is joined by legendary Australian performer Lindsay Field (John Farnham band) and the enchanting Emily Taheny (Mad as Hell ABCTV) for a musical odyssey through Henry Lawson’s most beautiful poems.Inspired by Tangos, English music hall and European folk tunes and echoing composers such as Jacques Brel, Astor Piazzola, Joni Mitchell and even the Anglican hymn book, Looking for Lawson features original melodies that sound fresh and at the same time familiar.

Lionel Bart was once Britain’s most celebrated composer, responsible for the iconic musical Oliver! He partied with Noel Coward, Rudolf Nureyev and The Beatles. Now he’s bankrupt and ensconced in a flat above a laundromat. At his piano and fuelled by more than a few vodkas, Lionel sings us songs including Living Doll, From Russia With Love and You’ve Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two and shares stories from his incredible life.

Adelaide’s own award winning funny man, Steve Sheehan, returns with a cabaret version of Wagner’s grand opera. As Tristan, he delivers an evening of bittersweet punch lines to some of the world’s great classical piano pieces. Isolde, who barely knows he exists, has a career to think about. Norma Knight, Stalwart of the local opera community for 45 years, lights up the stage as the diva preparing for her performance. They are both completely upstaged by Arapahoe the miniature horse.

Celebrating her 25th anniversary as a solo artist, Laura Fygi is a veritable vision of exotica with a distinctive sultry voice.

At home in The Netherlands she is famously known as the daughter of an Egyptian belly dancer raised in Uruguay;

in the Far East she is the emancipated Western lady who many others aspire to be.

Singing in English, French, Portuguese and even Chinese Laura fashions her own unique renditions out of famous jazz,

Bossa Nova and Latin hits. An instantly recognisable voice and she swings like crazy!

After the mega success of A Storm in a D-Cup, local award-winning cabaret darling Amelia Ryan returns to illuminate the secrets and stories we’re often too embarrassed to share, encouraging us to let go and be liberated.Through her signature blend of scintillating stories, clever parodies, and pop-musical mash-ups, Amelia asks: what does it actually mean to be a liberated woman? Is it through meditation or Moët?

Plumbing the depths of popular song (Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Rodgers & Hart) and pivoted around Shaw’s highly confessional, often hilarious originals, this one-man, one-piano tour de force is the ultimate lesson of one-man showmanship. This BBC award winning jazz singer, songwriter and comic presents a solo show which takes in all of Shaw’s performing skills. From poignant, witty takes on popular song to daring and often very personal tales of a life on the road.

When Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the infamous crossroads, he was fated to become the

founding member of the 27 Club. Its members include Hendrix, Morrison, Cobain, Winehouse and Joplin,

musicians who all famously died aged 27. They were each the voice of their generation.

Hosted by charming devil Henry Wagons and featuring rock goddess Hayley Mary (The Jezabels), Adelaide

vocal powerhouse Carla Lippis and guitar virtuoso Daniel Champagne. Celebrate the musicians who will forever be

27 and the music they left behind.

PERFECT

As a boy raised in the aspirational suburb of Mentone – one-time “Riviera Of The South” – Eddie Perfect couldn’t

wait to grow up and get the hell out. With heart-breaking and hilarious songs about coming of

age, binge-drinking, failed romance and mind-numbing normalcy, Perfect explores what it means not to belong, to

leave, and how it hurts to go back.A contemporary song-cycle set in the middle of Port Phillip

Bay that is equal parts nostalgia, peace-making and personal exorcism.

“…this is a moving, courageous and mature work that lingers in the imagination. The journey back to sleepy old Mentone proves one well worth taking.”

Last year Ray wowed US television audiences with his performance on America’s Got Talent, singing his hilarious song, What She’s Got. The song went viral with over twelve million hits on YouTube and is now known as the Penis Song. The 85 year old Broadway composer-lyricist, whose songs have been recorded by so many well-known artists including Louis Armstrong and Michael Feinstein, performs interpretations of his songs from the ridiculous to the romantic, from the silly to the serious, from the witty to the wistful... Well, you get the idea.

When Mrs Everage first appeared on stage in 1955, she did not wear her iconic bedazzled glasses, purple hair or an elegant frock. A lot has changed since her early days at Moonee Ponds.Come out and celebrate the creation, life and glittering wardrobe of this legendary lady at this extraordinary exhibition. Dame Edna will literally take the clothes off her back and lay them out for all to see, giving a rare, close up insight into the very fabric that has made her a global fashion icon.
