From the Pastor’s Desk...

Greetings Church Family,

It is amazing how fast time flies by, for the scriptures tell us in James 4:14, “For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” I am grateful that God has called me to spend my life as a

minister of the gospel and that He has blessed Harvest Community Church to be able celebrate one year of ministry to the people of Brantley County. We have been able to minister to hundreds of people this year through various events and worship services. I am thankful that we have seen six baptisms over the last several weeks as well as watching others grow in their faith. There are some great ministry opportunities in the near future with our ongoing backyard Bible clubs and a community picnic planned for later on this month. "Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.” John 4:35.

The month of July is going to be filled with some wonderful opportunities to gather and hear God’s Word together. I have been honored by several invitations to speak at nearby Bible conferences. And there are several guest speakers coming to our community that will surely be a blessing to hear. On Friday, July 9th, I will be preaching at Rick Coram’s PowerLife Bible Conference on St. Simon’s Island. Brother Rick is a dear friend of our church and his annual Bible conference is always filled with great preaching and anointed music. This conference requires paid registration

and more information can be found online. Bro. David Miller is preaching revival at Deenwood Baptist Church in Waycross on July 14-18. The Wednesday through Sunday schedule will allow some of our folks to hear this gifted expositor of God’s Word. An evangelist from Arkansas, Brother David has muscular atrophy that has confined him to a wheelchair. I have never heard him preach that I have not been challenged and strengthened. We are grateful for Deenwood’s pastor (Jarrod Everson) having Brother David in our area. Go one night if you can. You’ll be glad you did. This year is my 4th invitation to preach at the South Georgia Bible Conference in Valdosta. The wonderful folks at Morningside Baptist are always such gracious hosts. The July 18-21 Bible conference will also feature preaching by Sam Cathey, Gerald Harris, Bill Sturm, Russell Moore, John Waters, and our host pastor, Dr. Wayne Robertson. There are few people I love and respect more than Pastor Wayne. His conference features morning and evening sessions, and you will be blessed if you can drive over to Valdosta to attend part of this conference. Finally, on July 25th, we will host Dr. Sam Cathey in the EBC pulpit. Papa Sam has always been a blessing to me. His health is requiring him to cut back on his schedule. This may be one of the few remaining opportunities we have to hear this faithful servant of God preach the Word to us. As you can see, there is a lot going on in July even as the summer continues. Mark your calendar for these dates and make every effort to be present. I hope to see you each Lord’s Day with an open hand, and open heart, and an open Bible.

Hey girls! Are you looking for a fun way to spend part of your Saturday with your friends and grow closer to God in the process? Emmanuel Student Ministry is hosting a Passion 4 Purity Submerge Saturday July 17, 2010. Here we will discuss living a lifestyle of purity and becoming the girl God wants you to be. Our Scripture focus will be on Philippians 2:13-14. This will be an exciting time for you to gain a deeper understanding of purity and give you an opportunity to ask questions to help you in your walk with Christ. Even though this event is FREE, we still need you to register with a blue envelope by July 14! See you there!!

Dear EBC Family:

Thank you very much for your prayerful consideration and financial support to our family as we travel overseas to share the love of Christ on this mission endeavor to the Dominican Republic. Because of the love EBC has for Christ, our family will be able to share the gospel and witness to those who do not have the opportunities and freedoms we have in the states. Please continue to pray that God will give safety, wisdom, compassion, and success to our family and the other individuals who will be part of the mission team traveling.

PowerLife 2010 Youth Camp By: Mara Byrd

Last month our students went to Johnson City, Tennessee, to Rick Coram’s PowerLife Camp. The camp was filled with almost 600 students from more than sixteen different churches. We enjoyed fun times in the morning with energetic worship songs and intense Bible studies. Both the morning worship band and the evening worship band were awesome! The speakers were amazing too!

Evangelist Rick Coram really laid it down this past week! The theme of the camp was Spiritual Warfare. Pastor Rick taught us how to prepare for battle. We learned about the battle itself, the tools needed for battle, and how the victory is already won. Through Pastor Rick and other pastors who spoke to us throughout the week, thirty-nine students got saved at PowerLife and many more rededicated their lives. From our youth group alone, there were seven decisions including salvation, several rededications and a calling to the ministry! The Holy Spirit was really moving this week through our group, and we have returned home prepared for the war that is unseen around us. With Jesus we know we are capable to tell Satan, “Get thee behind Me,” as Jesus did while being tempted in the wilderness. PowerLife was an extreme blessing to us! It was also super fun! Thank you for your prayers and for giving scholarships to help students attend camp!!

A HEAVY LUNCH SACK

The story is told of back in the great depression when money, jobs, and food were scarce and people had to struggle. There was a man who was among the fortunate few who had jobs. Those men went off to work each day carrying a small paper lunch sack with a meager lunch. All of the men would go off by themselves at lunchtime because they were embarrassed many times by what they had to eat and by the small portions that they had. One man brought a single biscuit each day that his wife had lovingly poked a hole in and filled with syrup. That’s not bad eating, but a single biscuit, and only that each day, was embarrassing and rather monotonous after a while. He occasionally would “heft” a sack or two of his fellow workers as he placed his lunch bag on the lunch table each morning upon arrival at work. Of course he only did this

when he could do so with no one seeing him do it. He became intrigued with one sack that was constantly heavier than all the rest. His imagination began to run wild as he imagined all the wonderful goodies that the sack must contain. He envisioned baked potatoes and fried ham slices, maybe a half of a cake of cornbread. All sorts of menus ran through his mind, and he wondered at how this man was able to get such good groceries in such hard times. One day it got the best of him and he swapped his lunch sack for the heavy one. At lunch time he hurried back to the lunch table to get “his” sack first and be gone before anyone else got there. As he approached his customary eating place in a back corner his lips were drooling as he anticipated a virtual feast beside his ordinary biscuit lunch. With great excitement he opened the bag and discovered it contained two walnuts and a claw hammer. This story illustrates several truths we need to know. One is that anticipations based on external things aren’t always matched by the realities of internal things. We need to know this because we need to learn that sometimes our preconceived notions and ideas about things aren’t founded on reality. Some people think, without ever trying it out, that Sunday School, mission trips, local mission activities, a place of service here at Emmanuel, or _________________ (you fill in the blank), is not for me when they haven’t really opened that sack and looked inside. You may be in for one of the greatest surprises of your life if you’ll open the bag. Another truth is that at least some of the time, and probably most of the time, we’ve got it better than we really think we do. The proof that we have learned this truth will manifest itself in our giving. Now I know the offering plate comes to mind when I say giving, and rightly so. But there are other things that need to be considered when giving is mentioned. For example, giving up my class to be a part of Sunday School reorganization so we can reach more people for Christ; giving up my Wednesday night in a Discipleship Training class to work in AWANA and see children come to know Jesus; giving up the comfort of sitting in a Sunday School class for the responsibility, joy, and privilege of teaching a Sunday School class. There are all kinds of giving, and the most giving people are those who are aware of how much they have been given. Don’t be the kind of person who decides what’s in my bag is not as good as what’s in another bag. That will lead you to think that you have less than you really do. Come be a servant at Emmanuel where we all open our bags together and share.

Emmanuel Baptist Music and Worship Ministries

Emmanuel Baptist Music and Worship Ministries

Thursday night, September 16th, EBC will host the Georgia Baptist “Sons of Jubal” men’s choir and orchestra. You do not want to miss this evening. “Sons of Jubal” is made up of ministers of music from around the state of Georgia. We are expecting around 200 men for this concert, so make plans now to be here. It will prove to be one of the best evenings of proclamation and praise EBC has ever hosted.

EBC Choir

The EBC Worship Choir is a wonderful group of people who love the Lord Jesus Christ and love to sing His praises. August is always the best month to join this group of people. You do not have to audition to be apart of this group, and you just have to be 10th grade or older. We will kick off our rehearsals on August 4th. We want you to come be our guest and see how much fun choir can be. We have two rehearsals on Wednesday night, so you can choose which one best meets your needs (6:30 or 7:50 pm). Childcare is provided for each of these. The best part is you do not need to know how to read music. We will be starting our Christmas 2010 program, so come start with us during our rehearsals on August 4th. We will look forward to seeing you there in the choir room located in the back hall of sanctuary.

EBC Preschool, Children and Student Music kick off August 22nd at 4:45 pm

As school will begin during August, so will all of our Preschool, Children, and Student Choirs. Preschool and Children choir kick off is a time to bring your children to meet their choir teacher and have fun playing some games. I hope you make a point to involve your children in this wonderful ministry.

GWU Student Choir (6th—12th) August 22nd at 4:45

Each year, our student choir does an exceptional job of leading us in worship each month on Sunday evenings. We are planning some new music and a great mission opportunity for the Students this winter. Student choir also does a choir retreat each January.

What an awesome week we had for Vacation Bible School! A huge “Thank You” to EACH and EVERY person who worked! It was a long and tiring week, but it was great!!! Without dedicated volunteers like you, things would not have run as smoothly as they did. We averaged 389 people each night!

I would like to also say, “Wow,” to the offering that was brought in by the children each night. We received $2,395.72. To God be the Glory! The offering will be donated to a feeding program for children in Haiti. This is the most money ever raised during Vacation Bible School. What a heart of compassion our children have!!!! They were so excited to bring their money each night, but, I have to say, some of the excitement was to see someone get a pie in the face. That someone just happened to be Mr. Scott Kirkland, and he was such a good sport. The children loved it. Thanks, guys, for all the hard work!!

Wendy Peacock Preschool Director

Preschool News

The nursery department had a great week in VBS this year. The 2 year-olds had a lot of fun painting and making their crafts. Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked in the nursery during VBS. The workers had as much fun as the babies.

Great things are ahead for the Women's Ministry at EBC. The

women's ministry team is making plans for new Bible studies in the fall.

Look for announcements about some times of special fellowship during the summer.

August — Fall Bible Studies will begin! We had a good response to the new Tuesday night studies and will continue in the Fall. Also, we will offer

studies on Sunday evenings, Wednesday evenings, and Thursday mornings. Look for the listing of

the Bible Studies that will be offered in the coming weeks in the church bulletin.

You will have plenty of opportunities to be involved in Bible study!

If you have any suggestions, please see Sherri Robson or Becky Hayes. We look forward to all

that God has in store for the women of Emmanuel!
