DANIEL FREEMAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS Freeman Public Schools will collaboratively engage a community of learners so that students will become productive, respectful, and responsible citizens.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT, MR. RANDY PAGE

New Year, New Goals, New Opportunities

Here we come 2019! We all have plans. We have things to do and we have mountains

to climb! A new year brings with it new hope, new ideas, and new opportunities. You

know what never changes? Work is required to find success. Being prepared counts if you

want to be at your best and do great things. Getting off to strong start is much better than

having to play catch-up further down the line. So, set your goals, set them high! Also,

remember that you control your attention, effort, and attitude all of which will contribute

greatly to your success. Here we come 2019! We are ready to make you a year to

remember.

Soon after the beginning of the New Year, Nebraska’s Legislature will open their 2019

legislative session. Funding and taxes are going to be key topics within this session related

to education. Whether you choose to look at how the state creates revenue, how much

revenue the state creates, or what the state allocates funding to within the budget, all of these

concepts come back to the same basic topic, funding/taxes. Leadership is also going to be a

critical focus within this session. How will our leaders choose to work through the issues

facing the state, who will emerge as speaker and committee chairs, and how will the

legislative body and the Governor work together on sensitive issues facing our state? Keep

in tune with what is going on in the legislature and talk to your representative so that they

know your feelings and perspective on issues that are important to you!

Happy New Year and thank you for supporting Freeman, our kids, our activities, and our

educational system! Together we make a difference!

THE MYSTERIES OF CHRISTMAS By Mrs. Marker and Mrs. Garton’s Kindergarten science classes

Our Kindergarten Science this week helped us to answer a few burning questions about Santa and his reindeer. We worked like scientists first by identifying the questions, then watched a video of real scientists and how they gathered information to answer these questions for us. Here are a few of our hypotheses. If you’d like to read more of our hypotheses, please visit the Freeman Falcon web page and search for our story. And if you’d like to find out the Scientific explanation of these Christmas phenomena, the link to the video can be found at https://youtu.be/v26roTmutjw

1. How does Santa get to all of the houses in 1 night? • Charlie and Keaton – Santa can run really fast to every house and drops the presents into the chimney. The elf

puts magic on the sleigh and it goes speedy fast. • Lexie and Kylie – He gets to all of the houses because of Christmas Spirit. • Evy and Chloe – There is magic in his hat and magic in the reindeer’s collar and that makes them go so fast.

So he shouldn’t lose it or he can’t get to all of the houses. • Nolan and Quinten – There is a magic star that makes it go fast and there’s a little diamond star that glows and

that makes the sleigh so fast. 2. Why don’t we see him deliver presents? • Josie and Easton – Santa is really quiet under the tree and Santa is so fast that we don’t even see him. • Lane and Harrison – We are all asleep or we are up in our bedroom and not by the tree. • Madi and Kinley – He is really sneaky put the presents down so fast that you don’t even see him. • Alex and Ethan – He sneaks really quiet when we’re sleeping and we don’t even know it when we’re sleeping

and he tips toes through the house. 3. How does he fit down the chimney? • Keaton and Izzy – He pushes his tummy back and squeezes it down the chimney. • Kylie and Braxtyn – He’s not really fat. I’ve seen the real Santa before and he’s skinny. • Harrison and Jack – He holds onto a rope. He points and it makes him go down. • Charlie, Josie, and Lexie – Santa is skinny. He pours water on himself and that makes him slippery to go down

the hole. 4. How does Rudolph’s nose glow? • Keaton and Izzy – It has a light in it that glows in the dark. There is magic in it. • Kylie and Braxtyn – It has sparkles in it. • Harrison and Jack – There’s a light in his nose. When he was a baby a queen used her powers to make his

nose glow. • Charlie, Josie, and Lexie – He was born with a glowing nose and he had a little ball of glow that went up into

his nose. He had glowing bones that went up into his nose.

WHY TEAMMATES? As you read articles asking you to consider becoming a mentor, you may wonder why a student needs a

TeamMates mentor. The TeamMates Central Office released data taken from the annual mentee surveys. The following information comes from the 2018 spring mentee survey, including Freeman students: • 92% of our mentees have a higher sense of hope because of the mentor in their life • 90% are engaging in conversations with their mentors that help them recognize their strengths and talents • 94% feel a sense of value in their life and person because of having a mentor in their life Being a mentor provides hope for our students as they face the rigors of academic classes and extra-curricular activities. You can be a person who provides hope and confidence in the life of a young person. TeamMates of Freeman is seeking mentors for our students. We currently have boys and girls in fifth and sixth grade waiting a mentor. Please consider becoming a mentor. Go to www.teammates.org to sign up. For more information, contact Danelle Evers or Teri Nieveen at school.

HEALTH NEWS Flu season is upon us. We have had a couple of confirmed cases of influenza within the school so far this flu season and the state is reporting an increase in influenza activity. Influenza can be spread even before a person displays any symptoms so it is difficult to stop its transmission. Influenza can be a serious illness so please take note of the following information. What is the flu? Influenza (the flu) is a viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs. The flu is spread mainly by droplets made when someone with the flu sneezes, coughs or talks. These droplets can land in the mouth or noses of people nearby. They may also land on a surface that is then touched by another. This person rubs their eyes, put their hands in their mouth or nose and has potentially become infected. It is believed that the influenza virus can live for 2 to 8 hours on surfaces. What can you do to prevent the flu? If you have not received the flu vaccination, it is not too late. Contact your doctor’s office or Public Health Solutions for more information. In addition to being immunized, other general tips for preventing the flu include eating a healthy diet rich in Vitamin C, drinking adequate fluids, getting enough rest/sleep, covering your cough, not putting your hand in your mouth, eyes or nose and most importantly washing your hands. It is recommended that you wash your hands with soap and water for as long as it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice. If soap and water are not available, an alcohol based hand sanitizer should be used. What symptoms are associated with the flu? 1) Fever of 100 degrees or higher is usually present and lasts several days, 2) Severe aches, 3) Unexplained chills, 4) Moderate to severe tiredness, 5) Headache, 6) Cough. The symptoms of influenza come on suddenly and with a vengeance. What do you do if you are ill? Don’t hesitate to call your doctor if you suspect something more serious than a common cold as an antiviral medication may be beneficial. Studies show that an antiviral medication is most effective when started within 2 days of the onset of symptoms. People with the flu are able to spread the virus from 1 day before having symptoms to 5 to 7 days after becoming symptomatic. If your child is diagnosed with the flu please follow the advice of your physician as to when your child can return to school. At a minimum, your child is to be excluded from school for at least 24 hours after their fever (> or = 100 degrees) is gone without the use of fever-reducing medications. Please notify the school of any diagnosed cases of influenza so we can monitor the situation. Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

TEAMMATES OF FREEMAN AT HOLIDAY TIME Question: What is glass and goes on your Christmas tree? Answer: An ornament! That earns you a spot on your Christmas Bingo card. TeamMates of Freeman played Holiday Bingo before school the morning of December 4th. Mentors and mentees met together, ate rolls provided by our Board of Directors, and played bingo. It was a time of fun and a chance for matches to mingle with one another during this busy season. We still have boys and girls on our list, looking for mentors. If you can give twenty to thirty minutes a week to talk, play a board game,

make a craft or shoot hoops, you can be a mentor! Go to www.teammates.org and begin the application process. Question: Who is someone who makes a positive difference in the life of a student? Answer: A TeamMates Mentor!

FREEMAN EXTERNAL VISIT IS COMPLETE! Even though the weather shifted our schedule, the Freeman External visit was completed on November 27. The

team was kept busy touring facilities and interviewing administration, staff, and students. The evening meal from Monday was served after Tuesday’s preliminary report and the team was then able to visit with community and board members. The preliminary report was positive with suggestions for the next cycle. The final report should be available soon. Thank you to administration, staff, and community for your support, time, and hard work in preparation for this visit.

Second semester will be a time we start revising the mission statement and goals for the next five years. Community input is a necessity. If you would like to be a part of the Continuous Improvement Process team and have a voice in these areas, please contact the school or Teri Nieveen.

FFA NEWS The FFA has had a busy month! Fruit orders

came in and were sorted and delivered by FFA members. Thank you to everyone who supported the chapter during this year's fruit sales fundraiser!

The Ag Leadership class wrapped up its semester-long Ag Buddies program by making cards and coloring with their Kindergarten Buddies. This program alternates between the two sections of Kindergarten classroom throughout the semester and activities include reading, crafts, games, and other holiday activities.

At the end of November, the officers took a tour of several different businesses that support our chapter. Among those toured this year include Exmark Manufacturing, Farm Credit Services of

America, LandMark Implement, E Energy Adams, and Adams State Bank. We will look to tour different businesses each year as a way for our students to learn more about careers and different organizations.

As the FFA wraps up the year, we want to look back at the past year's successes and say thank you to the parents that have supported us, to the contest coaches for their time and dedication, to the community for their support of our activities, and the teachers at the school who are flexible with our schedules. We look forward to these partnerships in 2019!

Upcoming dates for the chapter are the Winter Ceremonies on January 21st at 7 p.m. in the ag room, the district Leadership Development Event contests on January 29th at SCC-Beatrice, the FFA Fun Night on February 4th at 6:45 in the ag room, the State FFA Degree Review on February 6th, and FFA Week activities on February 18th-22nd.

FBLA NEWS FBLA in Adams, Nebraska has been popping in the

month of December. This is Eli Pelc here bringing you the down low on everything FBLA. There has a speaker come in for the December meeting and Peanut Butter Drive.

The Peanut Butter Drive was a success in the fact that we got jars of peanut butter to donate to the Food Bank of Lincoln. We did not get as many as we were hoping for. We got around 50 pounds of peanut butter so around 25 jars. Next year, we will do a better job of spreading the word to you all so people will DONATE THAT PEANUT BUTTER. Remember folks it's for a good cause.

Freeman Public Schools has a lot of different fundraisers and asks a lot out of the community when it comes to fundraising. There is a solution for this. TAGG, which stands for Together A Greater Good. Holly Baker, the co-founder of TAGG, came and spoke to the Freeman FBLA and showed us what her company was all about. TAGG connects people, businesses, and causes for a mutual benefit. It makes fundraising in the community so much easier. All you have to do is download the app, take a picture of your receipt, and if that business is partnered with TAGG then you can pick a cause to donate to and a low percentage of your purchase will go to it. TAGG promotes community togetherness. One of their co-founders, Holly Baker, is a family first person and an entrepreneur. She works very hard and is very passionate about what she does. This company could be a great opportunity for the community of Adams here in the near future to fundraise for sports and other good causes. The FBLA students learned a lot from this wonderful person. TAGG and Holly Baker sure have “TAGGed” Freeman and their FBLA program with their ideas.

The Freeman FBLA program had a somewhat busy month and a productive one at that. The Freeman FBLA program is dedicated to overall success and community involvement. Signing off until next time, I am Eli Pelc sending you out with a great quote, “Don’t downgrade your dream just to fit your reality. Upgrade your conviction to match your destiny.

Strengths Discovery Day to be Held on January 30th

A group of staff members at Freeman is developing a day where all Kindergarten through twelfth grade students focus on

strengths. Freeman staff and all students in fifth through twelfth grade have taken the Gallup Strengths assessment. Students in grades five through eight know their top three strengths while students in grades nine through twelve and the staff know their top five strengths. The Kindergarten through fourth grade students will talk about strengths as superpowers, discuss some of the strengths they may possess, and will participate in fun, interactive challenges that focus on communication, teamwork, and leadership.

The fifth grade through twelfth grade students will learn more about their individual strengths, how they can

use these strengths on teams and in organizations, and how they can use strengths every day to become the best versions of

themselves.
