A great start to the year. Classes are off to a flying start with a high level of engagement occurring across the school.We had wonderful weather for the swimming carnival and participation and competition was fierce.

We have celebrated our High Achiever’s Ceremony and were pleased to see both the students and parents inattendance. Unfortunately four students were unable to attend because of travel and work commitments.

School photo day was another highlight as students keenly preened themselves for the camera. A catch up day will

be held on 5th for those who were away.

P&C – Our next meeting is the AGM – 7pm . followed by our normal meeting. Please consider attending to support ourschool.

Thanks to the P&C for the calendars and the ordering of the new blinds across the lower and middle floor rooms.

Our new Science labs are nearing completion and we are looking forward to having the practical room spaceback.

2013 DER-NSW Parent Survey

I have the great pleasure of informing everyone of our knockout boy's volleyball success today. They progressedthrough the tournament undefeated, without even dropping a single set!! Six Keys To Developing Resilience In Teenagers

Reality Check – Young people live up to the expectations we set for them, however high or low. They arelooking for boundaries and will seek to find where the boundaries are and how firm or enforceable thoseboundaries are. Young people need adults who believe in them unconditionally, holding them to the highexpectations of being unique, strong, passionate, creative, full of potential and generous to others.

The 6 P’s Of Resilience

PASSION

Young people are born with passion. Have you ever watched a young child dance to the wiggles, sing theirfavourite song, dress up as a super hero or pretend to be someone else? Unfortunately all too often adultstend to squash this passion rather than guide and foster it. You see the thing about passion is that it can benoisy and messy, so rather than create an environment to foster passion, we find it easier to discouragepassionate play.

Passion is an essential key for young people to develop resilience. Passion gives us energy when we needto work hard to reach our goals. When things get tough passion is the driving force which will help youngpeople keep going. It is passion which young people need to be able to navigate the world, think outside ofthe box, look for new ideas and recover from setbacks.

It is passion which gives a young person the determination and persistence to succeed as well as the abilityto focus their attention on a goal or a task. Passion is also a key element of having a good sense of humourand the ability to laugh or be light hearted in the face of adversity.

PURPOSE

Friedrich Nietzsche said “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”

Young people today live with a desire to contribute, to live with a greater sense of purpose than just livingfor themselves. We can see this clearly with the emergence of youth led movements such as ‘Make PovertyHistory’, ‘Thank You Water’, ‘The Oaktree Foundation’ and the ‘Global Poverty Project’ just to name a few.

Having a sense of purpose can be identified in two specific areas:

1. Personal Purpose

A personal sense of purpose may be found in answering the question – “What is my why?”

Helping young people work through the process of identifying their passions, skills and abilities, their storyand how that might fit into what they want to do beyond school instils in them a sense of personal purpose.To realise that their life is much more meaningful than the doldrums of their day to day activities.









2. Making A Difference

To make a difference in someone else’s life through a direct contribution gives a young person an amazingsense of personal satisfaction and meaning to their life. When a young person is removed from their ownenvironment and faced with the reality of someone else’s negative circumstance AND given the ability andopportunity to make a real contribution in that person’s life it brings a number of things:

Perspective – Young people often lack perspective which limits their ability to see the reality of their ownsituation.

Power – The globalisation of our world through technology means that young people see the enormity ofworldwide issues and often don’t understand the ability they have to make a difference in someone else’slife OR their own.

Pleasure – Through practical acts of service and random acts of kindness young people discover thatcontributing to others feels good.

POTENTIAL

I often use the apple seed as a metaphor when presenting my “Decide Your Own Destiny” presentation inhigh schools around Australia. The apple seed has the potential within it to create infinite numbers ofapples… right? But what happens if I put that seed in my pocket? (The wrong environment)

NOTHING HAPPENS!

But… If I dig a hole, plant the seed, nurture it, water it, care for it (the right environment) what happens? Atree grows and on that tree will grow more apples. In those apples will be more seeds and on and on itgoes.

Young people need help to identify the potential within them. It is our role as trusted adults to help our youngpeople identify this potential and create environments which encourage them to unpack that potential.

When young people lack hope (which is essentially an inability to see their own potential) they lose anydesire to do the tough stuff. One of the primary characteristics of lack of resilience in young people is thepropensity to quit. If we help our young people to identify the untapped potential, the gold which lays hiddeninside them, and create an environment which nurtures and encourages them to develop their potential wewill find them developing a great resilience.

PRACTICE

A young person’s previous experience in dealing with adversity and challenges will help them developresilience and skills to cope with bigger challenges in the future. There are often two extremes which faceyoung people in practicing coping with adversity:

1.Cotton Balling – Young people are often ‘cotton balled’ by their parents or significant adults and completelyshielded from any opportunities to deal with adversity and challenge.

2.Thrown In The Deep End – On the other extreme young people can be left to fend for themselves insituations where they may be forced to grow up too quickly because they lack the positive input from aparent or significant adult.

The opportunity to practice coping is a key to developing resilience for young people. As I speak with youngpeople I often refer to my story of being born with ‘Radial Ulna Synotosis’ the fusion of the radius and ulnabones in my forearms. The point of this story is the reality that ‘Stuff Happens’. We are all faced with ‘stuff’,hard stuff, bad stuff, stupid stuff, dumb stuff, whatever it is, life isn’t perfect and is ridiculous for us to pretendthat it is or it could be.

As adults we need to help the young people we work with develop ways of coping and overcoming thedifficulties they face, while presenting them with a realistic outlook and perspective on the world they live in.

Some of these common challenges that young people may experience are: disappointment, loss, change,rejection, conflict and failure.

POSITIVITY

Young people need a positive confidence to be able to live life to their full potential. It is often only inadverse events and challenges that a young person’s sense of positivity or self-esteem is tested.

One of the most significant contributors to my own sense of self esteem was my father. I was only 18months old when my parents discovered that I had been born with a disability. But from that time on, dadwould sit me on his knee at night and whisper into my ear “you are a champion, you can do anything you put












your mind to, you can be anything you want to be.”

These messages are now engrained in my subconscious!

The power of our words as parents and adults who have the privilege to work with young people issignificant. Our words literally have the power of life or death. We have the ability to speak life into thedreams and ambitions of a young person, or we can shoot them down and kill their idea of who they are andwhat they can become.

A young person’s sense of positivity and self esteem is built on two main things:

1.Competency – I am capable cause I can do stuff

2.Communication From Trusted Adults – I am capable cause people tell me I am

Positivity can act as a guard around young people against criticism, rejection and bullying. As I say to youngpeople all the time – when you’re confident in who you are, the labels other people try to put on you won’tstick.

PRESENCE

The presence of trusted adults and the modelling of healthy resilience strategies is more important thatanything we say to them. When I look back on my teenage years the most significant influences in mydevelopment were adults who took the time to help me develop through social interaction, teaching andmentoring.

The old adage “Do as I say, not as I do” just doesn’t cut it these days. The reality is that young people willfollow your example before they follow your advice. So much of actions we see displayed in young peopletoday is simply what has been modelled to them.

Young people, who have the support and active presence of at least one trusted adult, will recover muchmore favourably and quickly from challenging and difficult times than those who are surrounded by adultswho are inattentive and distracted.

MY CHALLENGE FOR YOU

Will you work with me and commit yourself to supporting the young people in your life to develop resilience.

Encourage passion and play

Help young people discover purpose – in their own lives and their contributions

Dig for the potential and create an environment for it to flourish

Stand beside your young people as they face challenges and adversity and teach them the strategies tosucceed

Speak life – use your words to build up and encourage the dreamer

Be present, be available

Celebrating 50 years of excellence, opportunities andsuccess

2013 marks 50 years of education on the current site of Cardiff High.

Initial planning began in 1957 with a survey on land owned by the Edwards family. The property was a dairyfarm with the dairy where the library now stands.

Planning in earnest began in 1960with the Principal and staff being appointed before the school was builtwith the presumption that the school would be completed in 1961. However, due to construction delays,












Cardiff High students were accommodated at other local schools. 2nd form boys stayed at Wallsend High,

1st form at Broadmeadow and the girls at Hamilton Girls High. For the timetable to function, Cardiff High staffwere shuttled between schools in order to deliver lessons.

The first time the school gathered together as Cardiff High School was at the first swimming carnival atNewcastle Baths in 1962.

Construction continued during 1962. In December that year, 1st and 2nd form students moved into the newbuildings, even as construction continued.

1963 was the foundation year with 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th Year students occupying the one block that was inuse. Issues with finalising the construction continued as enrolments continued to grow. The P&C providedlots of pressure on the government to ensure the completion of building.

One theme that has emerged from speaking to staff and students who experienced the tumultuousbeginnings of the school is that of strong friendship that developed between staff and students. It has beenremarked upon many times by ex -students and teachers who, despite the overcrowding and makeshiftnature of classrooms, found unity in adversity.

The first principal ,Mr Richardson, designed the school badge and chose its motto,”Know Thyself”. The shieldwith the badge surrounded by laurel wreath, contains representations of education – the stylus (writing), thetree ( knowledge), the lantern( learning) and the book(wisdom).

The first P&C swung into action with its formation in 1962. It was supported by an active Ladies Auxiliary.

By the end of 1963, the school had everything it needed to begin its future as an educational centre for theCardiff district – students, staff, P&C, buildings and boundless energy for the future.

2013 – the energy, enthuasism and pride in serving our local community continues. Our students’ successesare a testament to the wonderful support of parents and staff who continue to offer lots of opportunities andexcellence in teaching in a wonderful supportive environment.

We invite you to join us for our celebrations on Saturday 6th April 2013. Our events include:

Open day 10am – 2pm. Guided tours, art exhibition, entertainment, barbecue, coffee shop and












canteen will be available. Memorabilia , including a commemorative Munibung will be available.

6.30 onwards . A celebration concert with many former students who have gone on to professionalcareers have volunteered their time. Strictly limited tickets are available at the administration office.

P&C News Members of Cardiff High School P&C would like to welcome you all to the 2013 school year and a special












welcome to new students, parents, carers and staff.

Congratulations to Canteen Supervisor, Annette Salmon in receiving her Certificate for Nomination forCanteen Manager Award.

A big thank you to those who volunteer their time in the canteen, it is greatly appreciated. I am sure all willbe happy to keep cool with the installation of the new air conditioner.

The next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday, 13 March at 7.00pm in the administrationstaffroom. This meeting commences with the AGM, followed by the General Meeting. Everyone welcome! Ifyou are new to the school, this is an excellent opportunity to come along and meet other parents andparticipate in the decision making about all aspects of school life. The P&C is able to provide assistance tothe school and students through the wonderful work of volunteers from our school community and we wouldlove to have more people join us.

At the General Meeting, Mrs Russell will be taking us on a guided tour of the school. During the tour it willbe interesting to see the many works that have taken place, including the beautiful murals. We shall alsolook at the current state of window blinds, as at the last meeting of P&C, members voted to funding theinstallation of new blinds in a number of classrooms.

Healthy Schools, Healthy Futures

Healthy Schools, Healthy Futures is a joint research project between Hunter New England Population Health and TheUniversity of Newcastle. We are working with a selection of schools to examine whether building resilience inadolescents leads to a reduction in smoking and alcohol consumption. At Cardiff High School, staff have been workingto enhance the resilience of students both in and out of the classroom and this will continue in 2013.

Setting Goals

One of the factors of resilience is the ability to have high expectations and goals and use these aspirations to plan andfocus on the future. The start of a new school year brings an opportunity to reflect on past challenges and successesand set new goals for the coming year. In setting new goals it is important to be realistic and establish goals that areachievable. It is also important to be specific and have goals that are measureable and definite. A goal such as “I’d liketo achieve at least 60% on each English assessment this year” is more specific than “I’d like to get better in English”.Being specific makes it easier to work out the smaller steps that need to be taken to achieve the goal.

Technology can be a handy tool in tracking goal progress. There are numerous handy apps designed to assist withsetting, tracking and achieving goals. Some of these include Way Of Life, which uses a colour-coded system fortracking multiple goals, and 43 Goals, a social goal-making site that also connects to Facebook.

Whatever your goals may be this year, make them realistic, achievable and specific and work out how you will trackyour progress. And remember to celebrate your achievements along the way as well as at the end. These are thepositive experiences and skills that help to build meaning, maintain motivation and develop greater resilience. Goodluck!

Science News

Welcome to Science for 2013. It has been a busy and disrupted start to the year.

There have been a few changes to the Science Faculty staff. Mr James is now the Head Teacher afterrelieving in the position last year. We welcome back Mr Ross who was appointed to a permanent position atCardiff High School late last year after leaving CHS in 2008 to work as a permanent teacher at anotherschool. Welcome back also to Mrs Kerr from her maternity leave working Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.The other permanent science staff members are Ms Woodbury, Ms O’Donnell, Mr Smith and the deputyprincipal Mr Robinson is teaching the HSC chemistry class.

Staff and students are eagerly awaiting the completion of the two refurbished science labs. We thank all thestaff and students that have been working in these challenging circumstances due to the laboratoryupgrades. At times we have had two classes in the library at the same time this certainly is not what wewanted. We have endeavoured where ever possible to move classes into classrooms if room time tablingallowed it to enable our students to focus on their learning. The students deserve recognition for their abilityto adapt so well to the changed learning environments. The staff should also be commended for the collegialsharing of the remaining two laboratories to enable all classes the opportunity to partake in practical lessons.

Students in practical lessons are required to wear covered in, sturdy shoes and safety glasses as requiredby Workplace Health and Safety laws. We do provide a pair of safety glasses for those who forget to packtheir safety glasses, but they are a one size fits all. These safety glasses do provide good protection forstudent’s eyes. However, they are not as comfortable as a student’s own pair. Please help us to meet theWorkplace Health and Safety laws and ensure that your child has covered in shoes that will protect the topof their feet and has a good sturdy sole underneath.

It is essential for all students to participate in all aspects of the course to adequately fulfil and complete theoutcomes of the course. We ask that students collate all of the course work into a covered writing book. Thisenables the students to have all of the necessary notes together in the one location to revise and preparefor assessments, have evidence to demonstrate they have completed the course outcomes, demonstrate thequality of work that they are capable of producing and reflect the effort that they put into the learningprocess.

Students also need to bring with them the correct tools for the job. In science we write in blue or black penand underline headings in red pen. When we draw diagrams we use a pencil and if we want to improve theman eraser is used. All straight lines are drawn using a ruler and there are a lot of straight lines in tables,graphs and diagrams of equipment. When sheets are provided it is imperative that they are not lost, so aglue stick is required to glue them in. Where necessary we try to provide the resources listed above toenable all students to achieve excellence with in science.

Science is a practical subject and has a $6.00 fee for students in years 7 to 10 and a $10.00 per subjectfee for senior students in years 11 and 12. Could we ask that you pay your fees to enable us to purchasethe consumables used throughout the course like chemicals, matches, biological specimens etc as well asthe purchase of replacement equipment and new equipment to support your child’s learning throughengaging hands on learning.

Assessment tasks have begun for Yr7 with their poster task due on the 7th of March. The following is a list

of the assessment dates the juniors need to be aware of for the 1st semester. Senior students have areadybeen issued Assessment schedule booklets for 2013 and should be using these to plan and prepare forupcoming assessment tasks.

This purpose of this program was togage how the students were settling into High School.Natalie presented a power point presentation about thekeys factors of Communication. Students engaged ingames to support team building skills. These includednaughts and crosses snakes and ladder and miming.

Thanks to the English class teachers and Mrs Summerville for attending andsupporting the students and Natalie in implementing this program. Studentsreceived a book mark that had important factors for them to remember about

Do you know about the Schoolkids Bonus? It is a new cash payment to help eligible families and students with thecosts of primary and secondary school studies. Around 1.2 million families have already benefitted from the first waveof payments in January 2013 – have you?

If you receive a family or income support payment, including Family Tax Benefit Part A, you could be eligible to receive$410 a year for each primary student and $820 a year for each secondary student, with half paid in January and halfpaid in July.

The Schoolkids Bonus replaces the Education Tax Refund (ETR) and is a much simpler system. You no longer need tocollect receipts and payments are made automatically so you don’t have to wait months to make a claim via your taxreturn. Unlike the ETR you can choose how you use the payment to best support your children’s education – whether itbe school books, stationery, uniforms, school fees, or excursions.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT

Representative Sport has got off to a flying start in 2013. The girls and Boys Volleyball teams have alreadycompeted in their respective Regional Knockout gala days with mixed success. The girls bawd out in thesecond round but held their heads high with taking a set off the team that became Regional Champions inthe process. The Boys went through the entire day without dropping a set beating Glendale High, HunterSports and Merewether High all convincingly. This has qualified our boys to compete in the NSW KnockoutChampionships later in the term –congratulations Boys!! The team is: Bradley Roser, Dean Razmovski,Brendan Andrews, Brody Kirkbride, Lucas Blanch, Drew Lambert and Ray Steadman. Coached by Mr Welch.

The Open Boys Basketball team have also had their first win of the season beating BelmontHighschoolconvincingly earning our way through to the Regional Knockout Gala Day to be held at Maitland on

Monday 4th March 2013 –Good Luck Boys!!

Other sports in training and to be contested shortly are Open Girls Netball, Junior and Senior Boys Cricket,Lawn Bowls, Tennis, Touch, Open Boys League and football.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The weather was kind to us once again this year with the sun shining for the entire duration of the carnivalwith the heavens opening after the day had wrapped up. 2013 saw a record level of attendance and byCardiffHigh Schoolstudents. Participation by non serious competitors was also up. Many student partook inthe races in a friendly manner and earnt valuable points for their house. Valtiri jumped to an early lead intaking out the House Cheer competition and remained in front for the rest of the carnival to take out House

Swimming Champions for 2013, a massive turnaround from 2012 when they ranked 4th in the Swimming.

The House Championship Placings were as follows: 1st - Valtiri 795; 2nd - Yirrig 675; 3rd - Kalori 519; 4th -Waru -484.

SWIMMING REPRESENTATION

Twenty three of our students represented Cardiff High School at the Westlake Zone Carnival held at theForum on Wednesday 20 February. All students represented our school admirably and 5 students wereselected to represent the Westlakes Zone at the Hunter Regional Swimming Carnival to be held at Maitland

Pool on Wednesday 5th March 2013. We wish the following Swimmers the best of luck:

SCHOOL SPORT

Year 7 have been participating in an Aquatics Program during the Wednesday sport afternoon and areachieving development in swimming ability and lifesaving skills. I would like to take this opportunity topublicly thank the teachers that have volunteered to guide our students through this program. Theirenthusiasm and dedication has been rewarded with successed right across the board. Thanks go to MrKinniard, Mr Swadling, Mr Brown, Ms Carroll, Ms Goldsmith, Mr Randell, Mr Bussey, Ms Woodbury.

Coming up shortly years 8-10 will be selecting their term 2 sports. Notes with sports options and detailedinformation on each sport will be sent home with the consent form. Please take the time to read about thedifferent sports and guide your son/daughter to the most appropriate choice for them at this time. Bus farefor sports that require travel will remain at $50 for the term. Preference will be given to those students thatare able to pay bus fare and return the consent form on the sport choice day.

NEW SPORTS

Term 2 will see the introduction of 2 new sports to Wednesday Sport afternoon. –BMX/Scooter ridingatPlaygroundsParkand Gymnastics. We are fortunate to have an Australian Trampolinist, Ty Swadling join usin the PDHPE Department this year. He will be taking all keen gymnasts to Gateshead Gymnastics and iswilling to pass on his knowledge and skills to any student keen to learn trampolining or just participate ingymnastics as a sport option starting next term. WarnersBayhas also seen the opening of another greatsporting complex –PlaygroundsPark. This facility allows students to ride BMX and scooters in a safeenvironment and learn new trick in a professionally supervised area. They have all the ramps and slides thatyou would find at an outdoor park but also have the addition of trampolines and foam pits to learn trickcomponents in a safe manner. The cost of this sport will be $7/week + $50 bus fare.

The adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right messageto our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of thisevent is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved.

All students have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school. Thefunds raised will be used to purchase: School Representative Sports Uniforms

We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their childto fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward foreffort. In the Sponsorship Form you will also find many other benefits like the chance to win a family holidaytoDisneyland!

Blood Bank

Every three months students from Cardiff High travel to the Newcastle Red Cross blood bank and donateblood. Last year was a very successful year and due to the large number of donations we won the ‘CourtesyBus’ pick up trophy. This is an amazing achievement especially considering that we are competing againstmuch larger schools such as Merewether and Newcastle High schools. The first donations this year were

made on the 1st March with further bookings on the 5th and 8th March. Donors make a significantcontribution to society as each donation has the potential to save three lives. Students need to be sixteenyears old to donate.

Congratulations to Hayden Wilson Year 10 who was awarded St. Johns Ambulance Northern RegionCadet of the Year Award at the end of last year. The award is to congratulate the cadet on their goodservice and cadetship.

School Laptops

Digital Education Revolution-NSW aims to improve student learning experiences both in and out of theclassroom. As the Digital Education Revolution program finishes students will not be designated to receive a1 to 1 laptop. However it may be determined that a student will benefit from a home loan of a laptop. Thismay be for a particular topic of work, project or need. A number of pool laptops are available for short andlong term loan to such students. Loan laptops remain school property.

A Laptop Loan Charter must be signed and provided to the student’s school before the laptop will be loanedas well as a deposit of $150 to cover damages/ repairs if required. This deposit is refundable when the fullyworking laptop is returned.
