KEY CONTRIBUTORS
Wednesday 22nd February 2012
The official launch of AWES’s “WIND LOADING HANDBOOK FOR
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND - Background to AS/NZS1170.2
Wind Actions”.
This Handbook was prepared by the AWES to provide background
information into wind and its actions but also into the derivation of
the Code and its contents. In particular, it equips users with a better
understanding of wind and the Standard to provide them with
improved interpretation and judgment in determining wind actions
acting on structures.
A one day workshop will introduce the new publication and offer
practicing engineers insight into the application of AS/NZS1170.2
and highlight updates in the new edition. Attendees will be led
through the handbook by the authors and will receive a copy on the
day.
The Handbook covers key issues of the Standard; these are
reflected in the 70 minute sessions the outline of the Workshop:
Wind Loading Day Sessions:
S1: Introduction and wind speeds/multipliers
S2: Aerodynamic shape factors I - rectangular buildings
S3: Aerodynamic shape factors II - free walls & roofs,
frames, towers and members
S4: Dynamics – damping, along-wind response &
occupant perception
S5: Attachments to Buildings; Dynamics – cross-wind
response; Interference.
S6: Q & A and forum

A special session “Cyclone Yasi: One year on” will be run at AWES
15. This session will hear speakers outline some of the major
lessons learned in light of this devastating event. Some of the
topics to be covered are:
• Meteorological aspects of Yasi
• Analysis of Yasi’s wind field
• Analysis of damage to engineered and non-engineered
buildings
• Impacts of storm surge
• Implications of Yasi for building Standards or Codes
• Yasi implications for the insurance industry
• Damage assessment methods/techniques
Session organisers encourage anyone who would like to speak to
these topics, or any other work related to Cyclone Yasi, to make a
submission or simply come along and join the discussion. For any
queries please contact Dr Matthew Mason ([email protected]).

Sydney
Sydney is a cosmopolitan city surrounded by iconic beaches, a
beautiful harbour and countless parks. The city was the site of the
first British colony founded in 1788 and has remained Australia’s
largest and most international city.
Sydney has one of the worlds largest proportions of foreign
born inhabitants and enjoys a broad cultural mix that is visible
throughout the city. A temperate and humid climate, with abundant
sunshine and blue skies. February is known for its pleasant
afternoon sea breezes and boasts average maximum and minimum
temperatures of 26°C and 19°C.

addITIONal INFORmaTION CYClONE YaSI SESSION
Thursday & Friday 23rd & 24th The workshop is intended to provide a forum for scientists,
academics, architects and engineers to present their latest finding
in the fields of wind engineering and wind energy. The workshop
aims to encourage collaborations, address new challenges and
provide a platform for the discussion of the social and economic
effects of the wind environment. A broad scope of topics and
interested parties are welcomed.
The workshop committee invites abstract submissions on all
wind engineering and related topics, including wind energy.
Recommended categories include:
• Aerodynamics
• Bridges and tall buildings
• Codification & standards
• Meteorological events
• Structural dynamics
• Transport, dispersion & deposition of pollutants
• Ventilation and human comfort
• Wind damage & structural failures
• Wind energy & wind turbines
• Wind hazards, vulnerability & risk
• Wind modelling (numeric & physical)
The latest research on these topics and many others will be
explored during the workshop.
Key Note Speakers
Prof Jan Carmeliet, ETHZ, Zürich, Switzerland
Prof. Carmeliet will present research regarding wind flows in urban
environments and its potential to remove heat and pollutants from
streets, public spaces, courtyards and building envelopes.
Dr. John Schroeder, TTU, Texas, USA
Associate Professor and Director of the Texas Tech Wind Science
and Engineering Research Center John Schroeder will speak about
some of TTU’s recent full-scale observational work during landfalling
hurricanes in the USA.
