Adding Integers Definition’s
• Definition: If the signs are the same, combine by adding the absolute value of each number & keep the same sign.
• Definition: If the sins are different, ignore them. Then subtract the smaller number from the larger number and keep the sign of the original number that has the larger absolute.
Examples Of Adding Integers
Example 1: -2 + (-9)
2 + 9
2 + 9 = 11
Example 2: -30 + (-8)
30 + 8
30 + 8 = 38
Definition of Subtracting Integers
Definition: Adding the opposite of the second number gives the same answer as subtracting it.
Step One: Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign.
Step Two: Change the sign of the integer you are subtracting.
Step Three: Use the integer rules of addition.
Example of Subtracting Integers
9 - (-3)» 9 + 3 » 9 + 3 = 12
