Recommend Be the first of your friends to recommend this.
BILL: Dave, I was just reading aboutCorey Haim, the 1980s Hollywood teen idol. After 15drug rehabs, dead at 38 of an enlarged heart and respiratory failure – a dea th usuallysuffered by men in their 60s and 70s.
DR. DAVE: The police found bottles of Vicodin, powerful muscle relaxants andprescription tranquilizers[1]. At one point, his friends staged an intervention, It was part of his A & E Reality TV Show, "The Two Coreys." There was Haim, claiming to be clean andthen getting arrested for driving under the influence. But Bill, he died last March. Whybring this up now?
BILL: The last major medical facility that tried to help him was the excellent UCLAMedical Centre. But isn't that the same one Lindsay Lohan just "graduated" from?
DR. DAVE: In her case, with less than a month's recovery, she came up with a positiveurinalysis for both cocaine and am phetamines.
BILL: Haim, like Lohan, was young, good looking and rich, surrounded by devotedfriends. Same thing with Casey Johnson, with all her Johnson & Johnson mi llions, whowent around and around with drugs and died at 30. Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal'sson Redmond were booked on drug charges while out on a 24-hour pass from a rehabprogram. With help from the best rehabs in the world, why couldn't they break their fatalhabit?
DR. DAVE: A great deal of medical data indicates that a stay in rehab is followed byrelapse about 80% of the time. "All the drugs of abus e cause chemical changes in thebrain that make it increasingly difficult to get clean and sober," says Dr. Michael Jackson, medical director of the outpatient chemical dependency program at St. Vincent's Hospital."It's not an underlying weakness but actual changes in the brain."
BILL: When I went through rehab, one of the patients was 67 years old. "What am I doinghere with you drunks?" was her bitter joke. "I'm a nice little old Jewish grandmother. Inever had a drink in my life but when my daughter-in-law put some bourbon in my tea tohelp me fight a cold, I was hooked. I could not stop."
DR. DAVE: Although genetic predisposition is a continuum from none to ins tantaneous, if you are on the wrong s ide of that biological line, you can become addicted almostovernight.
BILL: When you and I met, you were running one of the mo st prestigious rehabs in theworld. How were you fighting this relaps e problem?
DR. DAVE: Bill, your addiction didn't keep you from a successful career on Madison Ave.Turn on your TV any Sunday to see that addiction doesn't stop anyone from developingathletic skills . Peoples' bodies don't stop m aturing during addiction.
BILL: Didn't you once run a halfway house for nuns where you felt many residents hadgrown closer to their God even while addicted?
DR. DAVE: What goes off track is social development. Dr. Jackson's "changes to thebrain" are, more specifically, changes to the emotional functioning of the brain. Theaccurate flow of emotions and empathy back and forth between the addict and others
goes off track. Addicts like to joke about their stunted social skills— few are willing toconcede that socially, they are 9th or 10th Grader trapped in an adult identity.
BILL: And, since recovery relies on group support to jump start that development, that'swhy you worked to build alumni groups, peer aftercare groups, and countless other social systems—not just AA or NA.
DR. DAVE: Whether it's AA, secular groups like Rational Recovery or even a non-s tepgroup like SMART groups—the key is groups.

Lindsay's Lohan has to accept the fact that she is an addict. If, shedoesn't it could be a long and slow death or one day she will be founddead. She has to change her thinking. Stay away frompeople(including family) who are leeches and develop over time self-esteem. She has to go and s tay in meetings and work a program of complete recovery. Prognosis- this might take a miracle.

She has to want the help. Untill then, there's nothing anyone can do.She knows what she's doing and this is her choice. I don't feel bad for addicts who want to stay that way.

I agree with the 2 other posters, Lindsay has to accept the fact she'san addict. You would think by now she would accept it. But, she keepsgetting bailed out. Jail was a joke. Rehab is a joke. Court was a joke. She had "fu_k u" on her middle finger nail, pointed at the Judge. It'sonly a matter of time before she kills someone, or herself. That'swhen her parents will sue s aying the courts weren't tough enough.

BILL: Esprit de corps—
DR. DAVE: From day one, our major measuring yardstick was how well did the addict getalong in NON-treatment groups. In the dining room, with the visiting alumni, or thecommunity outings. That's been the mark of success or failure in all the treatmentcenters I have been affiliated with.
BILL: Reading Corey Haim's biography, it was clear that drugs kept him from going backto restart his development with friends his own age.
DR. DAVE: When Lindsay went off on an extravagant Cannes vacation between rehabs,my feeling was, there it was again – a dis missal of targeted aftercare, whereprofessionals and pe ers would help her "come of age" with the social development she
needs in recovery.
BILL: So your prognosis for her is --?
DR. DAVE: Bill, you tell me.
