BILL: Dave, you read that AP story about amasked addict breaking into the home of a77-year-old woman, and snatching herOxycontin pills at knifepoint? And three
armed men in Hyannis, Mass ., who boundthe wife with duct tape, looking for herhusband's prescription pain pills?
DR. DAVE: Here i n New York City, thenumber of oxycodone prescriptions filled atpharmacies rose by 66 percent from 2007to 2009 a lot of that in middle-class
strongholds like Staten Island andChelsea. There have also been reports ofaddicts posing as home buyers, just toraid the medicine cabinets. Homeinvasions, robberies, ass aults, homicides, thefts, said Ja-net T. Mills, Maine'sattorney general. all kinds of crimes arebeing linked to prescription drugs.
BILL: When people as des perate as these
get caught, I don't think there's much usethinking if we can only get them to joinhands and s ay the Serenity Prayer, hallelujah---they'll find recovery. In fact, I bet they laughat AA as jus t more pie i n the sky baloney.
DR. DAVE: Bill, you sometimes let that smug I'm an alcoholic, not some thieving junkiedistort your view of the world. Ironicall y, drug us ers have one advantage over boozers they're breaking the law.
BILL: Your point is having to choose between going to jail or into treatment really focusesthe user's mind? But take Lindsay Lohan, Bobby Brown, and all the other arrestedaddicts who we see in the headlines every day. They just seem to cycle between drugbinges and court appearances. Doesn't that just prove the modern drug addict doesn'trespond to treatment?
DR. DAVE: It only proves that 1.,we have judges trying to be drug s pecial-is ts and 2 ., drugspecialists deluding themselves into believing they are pro-bation officers. The wholesystem is ideal for well-funded addicts in denial, es pecially those with lawyers skilled in
exploiting enabling loopholes.
BILL: Since 2001 , the British have been looking at legalizing the opiate drugs, includingheroin. The argument is that since most addicts never do kick their habit, let's not havethem robbing the rest of to get their fix.
DR. DAVE: Not a road I hope we take. There's a very succes sful treatmen t experimentthat's been going on since 1993
BILL: Drug Courts?
DR. DAVE: Ten years o f national s tudies s how their recovery rate around 50%. This
includes abstinence from drugs, l ess criminality and other base-line changes. Ourreaders can look at the June 2010 program evaluation at this federal website [link ].

Do you or someone you know need help with opiate addiction? Thislife-threatening medical condition can now be treated in the privacy ofa certified physician's office with prescription medication calledbuprenorphine (Suboxone/Subutex). Bupe is abuse resistant and hasa ceiling to its effects making accidental fatal overdoses unlikely. It
also blocks other opioids for days, and is not euphoric to peopletolerant to opioids. It has enough opioid effect to stop cravings andwithdrawal allowing the patient and their family to make thenecessary changes that will translate to sus tained addictionremission. TreatmentMatch.org is a free service from the non-profitorganization - National Alliance of Advocates for Buprenorphine
Treatment (NAABT.org) it is a confiden tial way to find doctors certifiedto treat opioid addiction in their office. Learn more aboutbuprenorphine at naabt.org

Excellent article, gentlemen. I don't want to see drugs legalized at all.Just look at Holland. Courts do have to be more accountable and thatneeds to be with the "rich" celebrities who feel they are above the law.$ 5000 a night treatment centers don't have any better statistics thanchurch basements with lousy coffee. What would happen and howmuch would it cost the taxpayers if the courts instituted these
programs and made them mandatory? What would happen to theaddicts who failed to comply?
