INSA is a fine artist and designer who has established himself from a graffiti background through extensive street level work and gallery shows around the world. Throughout his career, INSA has allowed himself to explore different approaches and outlets for his artistic agenda, including designing signature collections for brands such as Kangol, Kid Robot and Oki-Ni, as well as starting his own heel company ‘INSA HEELS’.

He has undertaken many private commissions for clients such as Sony and Nike and was recently invited out to Sweden as one of only two British artists to help curate and sculpt the 2008/2009 ICE hotel.

INSA’s canvases and installations are often hyper real, finely crafted creations in which sexual desire and commodity-fetishism merge and contrast. Always with a heavy sense of irony, INSA visually exaggerates the notion of objectification meets commodification with graphically depicted oversized body parts that are suspended in the controlled architectural lines of a sneaker or bold black and white graphic patterns.

INTERVIEW with Greg Rivera co-founder of Мишка…

Lets start at the beginning, ‘Mishka’ - When and How did you and Mikhal decide you wanted to give birth to this baby?

Mike and I started the brand back in 2003. I had just moved from Florida to NYC in 2002. We met pretty soon after I moved here. We were into the same kind of things, music, toys, horror movies, etc. Mike was working as a freelance graphic designer, I was working in film and drawing a lot. Mike and I would always throw around ideas for t-shirts and stuff, and finally Mike was like, I am going to start a brand called Mishka, do you want to help me out? That’s pretty much how it all started.

How big is the Mishka camp and what does everybody do?

Its about 20 people now! We have Mike Jones our Art Director, Erik does our Cut and Sew design, Tara is our in house photographer, Holden holds down the blog and the blog interns, Lesa is our Operations Director, Henry and Nick handle logistics, Royce runs our warehouse along with our awesome warehouse staff, Jonathan runs web store, Kev Buc runs our retail shop 350 Broadway, Al handles our east coast sales, Andrew handles our west coast, how many is that?

Mishka is still quite young compared to some of the other brands out there, but you’ve had a lot of great success. What’s been the secret behind this?

I think the secret is we have just stayed true to ourselves and our brand.

Where does Mishka draw inspiration from?

We draw inspiration from all over the place. Music, comics, art, film, or travels, it comes from all over the place!

How does the UK street wear scene compare to the U.S?

To be honest I think they are both strong scenes. From what I can see in the UK they are very dedicated loyal fans who are into a lot of the same things we are in to. We have a lot of love for our fans in the UK.

You recently opened a store in Japan. Are you happy with how the store looks? Any plans to open anything in London?

This March will be our 2 year anniversary for the Tokyo store. I am very happy with how it looks since we designed it! Haha, I would like to open a store in London, but no plans anytime soon.

You’ve got an amazing toy collection in your office – when did you start collecting these toys?

Thank you! I have been collecting since I was a kid. My older brother started taking me to flea markets, yard sales, thrift shops as a kid, and I became addicted to collecting toys. Nowadays I get a lot them off eBay also my trips to Japan.

What is it you look for when you go out looking to add to your collection?

At this point I like anything random or odd. Toys that I have never seen before. I am also a fan of bootleg and knock off toys. Sometimes they are better than the real thing!

Interview with Lamour Supreme by Greg @ Mishka

Ok so where does the name Lamour Supreme come from?This is the million dollar question I never get tired of answering actually. The most obvious is Coltraine which definitely inspired me during my art spark a few years ago. I also realized that the art I create isn’t really made by me, the individual. I’m just an instrument for it to go through. I’ve used different analogies but the best one is me being a hole in a flute where the God breath passes through and comes into this world. That’s who is really doing the art. I wouldn’t call myself the least bit religious especially if you know my work, it’s probably considered anti-religion, haha but there is definitely spirituality there that transcends language and symbols. The Love Supreme. I’m just a francophile so I threw L’Amour on there as well.

Tell me a little bit about your history as an aritst, have you been doing this your entire life?I’ve been doing art all my life. Ever since I could remember and my mom used to tell me that I was drawing cars when I was 2 years old. I grew up in the bronx so I also grew up with the whole Hip Hop/ B-boy culture in the early to mid eighties. Went to art school and then realized I needed to find a real job after that because comic book artists just can’t make a living unless you’re Frank Miller or Alan Moore back then. I went on to become an architectural designer which I did for years but knew that I still had to paint, and draw. Almost like being able to leave for a bit but then called back when the time is right.

Is it true that you were a comic book arist? What comics did you do?Well I met Steve Stern in the early 90s who is the co creator of a character called Zen Intergalactic Ninja. I was airbrushing in a mall at the time and he asked me to airbrush his character. I told him I wanted to be a comic book artist and he gave me a stint on Zen and a lot of creative freedom. I penciled and inked the books

I worked on which I loved because I had control on a project for the very first time. Those were great times and I still get adults coming up to me and telling me how they loved my Zen interpretation because up until I started doing him, he was pretty G rated. I kind of buffed him up with intergalactic steroids, threw in some nudity and made it more of a darker violent comic. Pretty much what I do to everything I work on. I went on to do the architectural design shortly after that because this was the time of the early 90s comic book crash.

How did you start working with Mishka?I met Greg and Mikhail through a mutual friend John Prolly. He was an architect at the time who was designing the new Mishka Brooklyn store and he knew the guys needed someone to paint a mural on the wall. I was pretty excited to do it actually because Mishka was making a name for themselves at the time and I thought my art could be a part of the company in some small way. Fast forward a few years later and I’m still pumping out art/design projects with these guys more than ever. Our names have become pretty synonymous with each other and that’s great because I feel I’ve found a home there. I’m like the adopted baby they found abandoned in a dumpster. Hahaha!

What are you currently working on?Hhmmm, a bunch of things actually. I don’t know how much I can describe the Mishka projects we have coming up but they’re really great. I get to work in mediums outside of 2D and put my architectural prowess to use. I’m also working on some collaborative shirts with other companies and Mishka. Designing more vinyl toys with Mishka and myself. Getting back to painting on canvas and art in general. I’m just having fun at the moment.

The KDU (Keystone Design Union) Design & Communication Agency based in Brooklyn, New York, return with another range of Addict Co-lab Artist tees, led by KDU founder David Gensler. The Brooklyn based design house have been busy with their latest project and fashion brand SVSV and their recent pop up store opening.

Their clothing brand, Serum Versus Venom (SVSV) was created in 2003 as a long term study into the interconnectedness of craft and utility, in the pursuit of creating

a new luxury. While ultimately focused on creating bespoke, made to measure and short run garments, SVSV also explores home goods, jewellry, media and art as platforms for expression.

This latest Addict X KDU project has a real feel of Americana with a heavy dose of NYC vintage flavour mixed in, the customised graphics are executed with true authenticity and quality which is second to none.
