MAKING THE MOST OF A MICHIGAN WINTER

W inter is upon us, but there is no reason to hibernate. Weare fortunate that, unlike bears, we don’t spend our win-

ters isolated and sleeping. There are many things to do thiswinter at Adat Shalom, which are sure to get you out of thehouse and engage your mind and spirit.

In addition to weekly Shabbat services, we offer a ShabbatTorah Study session every Shabbat morning at 10 a.m. If youhaven’t attended one yet, and you’re in the mood for an alter-native Shabbat experience, I highly recommend Shabbat Torah Study. (See listof weekly discussion leaders on page 2.)

We are fortunate to have a great SYNergy event on January 13th, featuringDeborah Lipstadt, with a powerful presentation based on her book TheEichmann Trial – Its International Significance After 50 Years.

On January 8th, our Sisterhood and Men’s Club are holding a joint break-fast, followed by an interesting presentation on Jewish genealogy. Men’s Clubwill hold its annual World Wide Wrap on February 5 and a Father-Son BoardGames event on February 12th. All men are invited to participate in theIntercongregational Dinner on February 9 at Beth Shalom, featuring a lively talkby Justin Jacobs of Come Play Detroit.

When things are notgoing right in our lives,

we often say we are not in agood place. Not just a toughtime, but something that isso overwhelming that it feelslike a place. Everywhere youturn is another challengeand difficulty. This is whenwe feel most alone.

This is the story ofJacob. He is on the run from his brother whomhe has cheated twice. He is alone for the firsttime in his life, away from the mother who hadprotected him.

The only thing he knows is where he isleaving, not where he is going. He has no plan,no home, and no friends. Jacob is in a verybad place.

At night in the wilderness he dreams of astairway reaching to heaven, with God at thehead. God tells Jacob, no matter where youare in life, I will be there for you, and I will be

Iam very excited to announce that this month Adat Shalomwill host the first annual Cantor’s Cabaret. A recurring con-cert series, the Cantor’s Cabaret will present various perform-ers and styles of music. Our maiden voyage will feature MartyLiebman, Adat Shalom’s Resident of Sacred Music, me, myultra-talented wife, Lauren, and last but not least, the beauti-ful Vieder Memorial piano.

The theme for the first cabaret is A Night of Yiddish Music. We will presenta wide variety of Yiddish songs, including hits from 2nd Avenue (aka “YiddishTheater”), the radio, your childhood, your Bubbie’s record collection, and manyother gems of our heritage.

In addition to the music, we also plan to transform Adat Shalom into anOld World coffeehouse. We’ll create an intimate setting with candlelit tables,beverages and light refreshments.

I f you search Google images for a picture of an angel, you’llfind all sorts of lovely winged, cherublike figures. If yousearch the Torah, however, the images you will find are far dif-ferent. In the Torah, angels often take human form. TheHebrew word for angels is malachim. In the Torah, malachimare found visiting people who are sick or depressed, offeringencouragement and strength to those who need it and show-

ing others the holiness in simple things. Interestingly, the Hebrew word malachmeans both angel and messenger. This is not a coincidence; our tradition teach-es that we all act as God’s messengers when we help those around us to devel-op resilience and uncover inner strength. As February comes upon us and westart seeing winged cherubs in the media, let us take a moment to considerJudaism’s understanding of angels and remember our roles as God’s messen-gers.

A t the December 1, 2011monthly meeting of the

Farmington-FarmingtonHills Interfaith Association(FAIA), two FAIA colleagues,a Roman Catholic and aProtestant, mentioned dur-ing our “check-in” time thatdue to economic necessity, each was engagedin merger discussions with other groups intheir denominations. Prayers were requestedfor the success of the mergers now being con-sidered. That tone of serious reflection led meto think of a 1998 merger.

Thirteen years ago, Congregation BethAchim of Southfield and Adat ShalomSynagogue of Farmington Hills merged. TheUnited Synagogue gave our congregation aSolomon Schechter Award for our exemplarymerger activities. (See Judy Marx if you wouldlike to read the excellent album that was pre-pared about the merger.) The RabbinicalAssembly leadership observed the success ofthe merger in its initial years and asked me toexplain at a Rabbinical Assembly Conventionsession in Houston, Texas, the reasons for our

Jacob wakes up and says something strange. Hesays, “God was in this place, but I did not know it.” Idon’t think this refers to a geographic location. I thinkit means that Jacob did not think that God could findhim when he was in such a bad place. He thought hehad cut himself off from everyone and everything,which is why everything felt so dark.

God is saying to Jacob that the purpose of life isto help everyone realize that no one needs to be alone.God is always there with us. This does not mean Goddoes everything we want. It does mean that Godalways cares about us, and wants to know how we aredoing. Your worst time in life, when you say you arenot in a good place, can still feel like a house of God.You can find meaning when things do not go yourway, because there is not a moment of your life thatGod is not available.

In the Book of Psalms it says, “For God, the dark-ness is not dark. The light is always there, but oursadness and anxiety often blocks it out.” This is whythe verse, “God was in this place, but I did not knowit” is written on the ark of Adat Shalom Synagogue.

Our congregation is a place to be when you are ina bad or dark place, not just when we are ready topraise or thank God. It is a good place to be when youfeel loneliness and anxiety and frustration.

Even when we are just by ourselves, we neverhave to feel alone, or that we are in a bad place wecannot get out of. When we come together, no matterwhat, and when we turn our hearts upward out of thedarkness into the light that is always there, and whenwe realize that God is found even in the darkness, welearn that it is always possible to be in a good place inour lives.

Our Active Affiliatesn MEn’s CLuB HappEnings

Hello from the Men’s Club.

If you haven’t been coming to our Men’s Club events, you havemissed many good activities. In November we had Euchre night,chaired by George Dickstein. In December we had an amazing LatkeLunch, co-sponsored by the Education & Youth Department. We hadover 200 people attend and nearly two dozen volunteer helpers. Somany came without reservations that for the first time in history aJewish event ran out of latkes. Thanks to Ken Podell for chairing thisvery successful program and to all the Men’s Club members thatshowed up to help. At the end of the month we showed two greatfilms at our Family Movie Night, chaired by Gary Morof and JoeWener. Thank you to all of our chairpersons. They have all done awonderful job and allow us to continue to offer a huge number ofevents. Hal Baker, Don Davis and Larry Kaplan chaired our Sunday,December 11th Sing-Along at Senior Residences. On January 8th we will be having a joint breakfast with theSisterhood. James D. Grey will present “An Introduction to JewishGenealogy.” On January 15th we will co-host an Ice Skating Eventwith the Education & Youth Department at the Novi Ice Arena. Themen will get together on January 22nd to watch the NFL playoffs atthe home of Harold Schiff.

- February Frenzy -

February will bring the World Wide Wrap when we join Men’s Clubsfrom all over the world to lay Tefillin on the same day. At AdatShalom we have devoted this morning to teaching our young peoplehow to put on tefillin. February 9th is our annualIntercongregational Dinner, to be held this year at Beth ShalomSynagogue. Adat Shalom typically has the largest contingent of anysynagogue present, and we hope to continue our tradition of greatparticipation. On February 12th, we will be having a Father-SonBoard Game event. On February 18th, we will be going to dinner anda movie with our significant others. In late winter we will also begoing as a group to U-M, MSU, and Western Michigan to have lunchor dinner with our college kids. The dates for those meals have notyet been finalized.

Wow! Seven events, plus three college visits in two months – a lot,but you don’t have to attend every event. Pick one, or a few. We lookforward to seeing you.

Also, if you haven’t paid your dues for this year please do so. Duesare still only $36. You can see that the Men’s Club provides the AdatShalom family with many activities with your minimal investment.

JANUARY RELIGIOUS SCHOOL HAPPENINGS: CLASSES RESUME JANUARY 4.ON JANUARY 13, WE INVITE ALL OF OUR SEVENTH GRADE FAMILIES TO JOIN US

FOR SYNERGY SHABBAT. January’s Synergy features Deborah Lipstadt, abrilliant scholar who made a name for herself battling Holocaustdeniers. This will be a very powerful presentation for our students andan enrichment to their study of the Holocaust. We will set aside a num-ber of tables for 7th grade families. This will be a nice opportunity forthese families to get to know one another.

ON JANUARY 14, AS PART OF SYNERGY WE WILL HAVE A FOURTH GRADE

SHABBAT. The students are preparing a song about the weekly Torahreading. They will also help to lead a number of prayers in the service.Other families and students are welcome to join us but this week’s serv-ice is designed primarily for the fourth grade.

ON JANUARY 22, SECOND GRADE FAMILIES ARE INVITED TO A SIYUM, a cele-bration of the children’s completion of the first few parshas in the Bookof Bereshit. As in customary at a Siyum, the students and guests willstudy the last piece of Torah together. Then we will meet some specialguests from a long time ago and have a biblical themed snack. Yourchildren are very proud of what they are learning. Please give them theopportunity to show off a bit.

JANUARY 28 IS SHABBAT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL. Please join us at 9:15 a.m.for juice and muffins. Classes will begin at 9:30, followed by twentyminutes of games and then family services.

BUILDING COMMUNITY is a goal of the youth depart-ment. In December, I had the pleasure of organiz-ing and leading a Shabbat retreat for a group ofmiddle school students from Adat Shalom, ShaareyZedek, Beth Shalom and B’nai Israel. The Shabbatretreat was held at the Kalahari Resort inSandusky. This was a unique Shabbat experiencefor the teens. They had a blast!

On Sunday, January 15 we are having a winterOlympics event for teens from all of theConservative shuls. This is hosted by ShaareyZedek. I hope to bring the teens together again withother teens from Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania,West Virginia and Kentucky at the Central RegionUnited Synagogue Youth Middle School Retreathosted by Congregation Beth Ahm February 3-5.This camp style weekend is a wonderful opportuni-ty for teens to hang out with their friends, makenew friends, have fun and celebrate Shabbat.

As one of the leaders of J-Serve (community wideteen volunteer initiative), it is my pleasure to invite6th to 12th graders to be a mensch and make a dif-ference on Thursday, February 23. Teens will putthe mitzvah of Ha’akhalat Re’evim (feeding the hun-gry) into action. Look for more information about J-Serve Detroit at www.jservedetroit.org.

Understanding that at theend of every day, we have completed numerous Jewish values, weonly need to look back in order to see them. This Chanukah wededicated each night, each light to one value. I want to stress theimportant fact that we should all remember to look back at theend of every day. Remember the light we leave behind, the valuesthat we live each day. Make a point of making each day count. Atthe party we focused on CARING FOR THE SICK, CARING FOR ANIMALS,WELCOMING GUESTS, KEEPING PEACE IN THE HOME, FEEDING THE

HUNGRY, NOT DESTROYING NEEDLESSLY, CLOTHING THE NAKED, THE ACT

OF RIGHTEOUS GIVING, REPAIRING (IMPROVING) THE WORLD, STUDYINGJEWISH TEXTS.

To open our program, the chil-dren of the Early Childhood Center will perform a wonderful musicalreview in the sanctuary. Families will be able to dance the night away to the soundsof our Rockin’ D.J. Art activities and an amazing Scholastic book fairwill also be available for everyone to enjoy. ON FEBRUARY 12 OUR SIXTH GRADE FAMILIES ARE IN FOR

A TREAT AT THE TZEDAKAH EXPERIENCE. The TzedakahExperience is an annual 6th grade community eventdesigned to teach families about Federation agenciesin the Detroit area. While participating in this veryinteractive experience, we also learn what it means tobe part of a community and about our obligation tosupport our community. The Tzedakah Experience isan amazing program. It was created a generation ago,and it has continued to evolve with the times and withthe input of families, volunteers, educators and JewishExperience for Families. This is a “don’t miss” morning!

ON FEBRUARY 18 WE ARE GOING TO COMBINE YOUTHSHABBAT WITH SUPER SHABBAT TORAH STUDY. Each gradewill lead different parts of the service. When we get tothe Torah service, there will be different options.Families will be able to choose between 1.) a tradition-al, although abbreviated, Torah service, 2.) a musicalTorah study with songs about the parsha, 3.) a studyfocusing on art about the Book of Shemot, or 4.) a sto-rytelling program about the parsha. After this 20-minute experience, we will all go to the Main Sanctuaryto end services with the congregation.

Many of the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House are a great dis-tance from home and family. YAD EZRA DELIVERIES…On Sunday, January 22nd, we willneed volunteers to make Yad Ezra deliveries. This involves driv-ing to Yad Ezra on Sunday morning with yourfamily or friends and picking up groceries todeliver to two or three clients in the area. Itonly takes about 1½ hours. Without this“home delivery” many homebound recipientswould not receive their groceries. This is espe-cially important during the winter months. THIRTEEN YEARS AGOFROM RABBI YOSKOWITZ (continued from page 3)excellent progress. In part, here is what I said at the conventionand later prepared for inclusion in the Proceedings of theRabbinical Assembly.

‘”The Beth Achim congregation leadership felt at home withthe Adat Shalom leadership. Meetings were arranged betweenthe rabbis of both congregations and between the lay leadershipof Adat Shalom and of Beth Achim. Merger teams were formed.Each of the merger teams met with the rabbis of the congrega-tions. Each side came away with the feeling that the needs ofthe other were being respected and addressed. In Pirkei Avot4:1, Ben Zoma addressed the question, “Who is wealthy?” Theanswer given is “one who is happy with his lot.” Both congrega-tions were happy with themselves and with each other. Eachhad something to offer which the other did not have.Congregation Beth Achim had a high percentage of its membersattending religious services regularly. Adat Shalom Synagoguehad an excellent religious school and a large enrollment. AdatShalom was located in an area to which many Jews had moved.It was financially sound. Both congregations had leaders whowere respectful of the role of Judaism in the life of the commu-nity and displayed Kavod Harav. To be sure, there were issuesthat continued to be a challenge after the merger was effected,but the willingness to compromise and to empathize with eachother allowed challenges to be resolved.

“The Rabbis who came together work as a team. At this

time, it is difficult to remember someone asking ‘From whichcongregation did you come?’ This merger has really worked.”

Ask new members in January, 2012, if they can differenti-ate long-time members who came from Beth Achim. My guessis that they will likely be unable to do so.

Like a clergy person’s spiritual journey, so, too, does a suc-cessful congregation regard its work as a sacred quest to bringits members to love God, to respect Judaism and to stand tallas Jews. In 1998, the leadership of Adat Shalom and of BethAchim resolved to continue that quest as a single merged con-gregation which attempts to change lives, in the words of RabbiJonathan Sacks, “by showing people a greatness they did notknow they had.”
