Congregation KTI Paver Project

Phase TWO is Now Underway!

This is a great opportunity to make your mark at KTI!

Enhance your special moments with a personalized engraved paver to be placed on

our existing patio located to the right of the front door of the main building. Pavers are a lasting way to remember loved ones, celebrate bar or bat mitzvahs, weddings,

confirmations, births, baby namings, graduations and other life cycle events.

Pavers are available in two sizes — 4”x8” and 8”x8”. The pavers are shaped like bricks but are light in color to complement KTI's facade. The smaller pavers are $118

and the larger pavers are $180 each.

By purchasing pavers, you will be supporting KTI now and you will be part of its future.

We are also happy to consider donations of shrubbery to improve the setting for our

patio.

Order your paver at www.brickmarkers.com/donors/ckti.html.

ORDERS MUST BE RECEIVED BY JUNE 1, 2017

Dear Friend, We recently celebrated Tu b'Shevat - the New Year of the Trees. In Israel, trees are beginning to bloom, the rainy season is just about over, and spring is around the corner. New Year celebrations bring opportunities for growth and renewal. Here, at KTI, we are excited for the changes that are just around our corner. As you may have heard, Cantor Sklar, in addition to being our Cantor, will also be the new Director of KTI's Religious School, beginning this summer. In this capacity, she will serve as a Jewish educational role model, not only for our children, but for all of us. We are looking forward to adding a new dimension to our teamwork. Over the last seven years, we have built a strong partnership built on trust, open communication, mutual respect, and a desire to serve this community to the best of our abilities. We are excited about collaborating in order to build on the many successes of the Religious School. We believe that the Cantor's expanded role will spark creativity and cultivate meaningful connections among the many arms of KTI. While we are aware that transitions can be challenging, just as trees begin with small buds that grow into beautiful flowers and bear fruit, we know that in time, this change will strengthen the KTI Family, renew creative energy, and foster even deeper Jewish learning. B'yedidut (in friendship), Rabbi Jaymee M. Alpert and Cantor Alexis K. Sklar

Neshama Body and Soul The following Neshama Body and Soul sessions will be held at Congregation KTI,

President’s Message

“Everyone has a story”

We have all come together and formed a community here at KTI, and have travelled different paths along the way. Here is my story: I grew up in the middle of Nassau County, Long Island and our family belonged to a reform synagogue. My family had strong cultural ties to Judaism, but we were not observant and I had limited formal Jewish education. Of course, I had many Jewish friends, took part in Passover Seders, Chanukah celebrations and attended high holiday services and the B’nai Mitzvot of numerous friends–but I was unaware of the larger meaning of these rituals. My informal Jewish education began when I married my husband Norm in 1989. He grew up in a Kosher and observant conservative home. I willingly accepted these traditions and made them my own, although I’ll confess managing two sets of dishes took some practice. As young Manhattanites, we sent our children to Jewish nursery schools; my daughter Melissa attended a Hebrew day school and Norm and Melissa attended Shabbat services regularly. We had weekly Shabbat dinners and socialized with both conservative and modern orthodox Jews. Gradually, I gained a sense of living a Jewish life; it became comfortable and enjoyable. After we moved to Rye Brook and joined KTI, I came to realize that I wanted more. It wasn’t enough to drive the kids to Hebrew School, attend holiday celebrations and programs and simply be an observer during the services. In 2004 I decided to learn how to read Hebrew and attended the wonderful classes offered at KTI. Upon realizing that I could actually do this, I had the good fortune of joining 4 other KTI women in a B’nai Mitzvah class conducted by Rabbi Alpert. We formed a magnificent bond during our course of study over 2 years. It was during this time that I got my first exposure to what our rich heritage and traditions have to offer. I became a Bat Mitzvah in 2007, a little over a year after our daughter Melissa. I read from the Torah and led part of the Shabbat morning service. Our son Daniel became a Bar Mitzvah in 2010. It is a source of great pride to me, that I was able in a small way to share their experience through my own b’nai mitzvah here at KTI. I am a CPA and spent many years as a full-time working mom. When I decided to become a ―stay at home‖ mom, it afforded me the opportunity to become more involved in KTI life. The need for volunteers and the sense of community lured me here and over time I became part of something that has had great personal meaning to me -- supporting a wonderful institution that offers so much to our members and the larger Rye Brook and Port Chester communities each and every day. Our community takes great comfort knowing that KTI is here to support us in so many ways. When you need us, KTI is here. On our almost daily drives up or down King Street through just a brief glance, we witness KTI and all it represents—KTI is here and is a constant in our lives. All of us should take great pride in this, as we have each played a part through our membership, volunteering and tzedakah. continued on page 6

K.T. Items Page 6

continued from Page 5 I have met and become friends with so many wonderful people here at KTI. My role started gradually, helping out at many of our events – dinners, Purim carnivals, fundraisers and then taking on more of a leading role for these events. From 2004-2008, I was President of the Sisterhood. Nothing gave me more satisfaction than running a successful tag sale; gathering in the KTI kitchen to learn how to bake challah, helping facilitate a Sisterhood Shabbat service and, most important, nurturing the stability and growth of KTI.

Since 2004, I have had the honor of being a member of KTI’s Board of Directors. I became Chair of the Religious School Board from 2008-2011 and worked with the Board and our Hebrew School staff to maintain the quality and richness cultivated in our Hebrew School over many years. While always challenging, it was rewarding to have played a small role in supporting our Hebrew School, which is vital to our community and our children’s future. I was then asked to join the Executive Committee and became Secretary. This year I was honored when Larry approached me to assume the role of his co-president. I am very excited about my new role--working with all of you this coming year and adding another chapter to my story. I want to personally thank Larry for all the time and energy he puts into KTI. His dedication and devotion are unmatched. It is wonderful to take part in supporting KTI and working with our dedicated clergy, staff, leaders and volunteers. Through my involvement, I have achieved personal milestones and a new sense of Jewish spirit and identity. I hope and encourage each of you to become more involved at KTI this year. The unique talents, dedication and spirit of our volunteers have amazed me. You can start gradually, as I did, or jump right in to take on a larger role. I promise that you and ―your story‖ will be enriched by your efforts in whatever capacity, and I know KTI will be as well. Joanie Rosenbaum, KTI Co-President

K.T.I. Early Childhood Program It is hard to believe it is already March 2017! It seems as though we were just celebrating Hanukkah and the New Year a moment ago. The ECP has been very busy since our last update. School reopened on January 3rd and the action began immediately. Our 3s classes came back to school in furry slippers and comfy PJ’s to have a fun pajama day! Children enjoyed a delicious ―breakfast‖ of cereal for snack. They played games and read ―bedtime‖ stories. Some of the 4s had a PJ day at the end of the month, while the other class of 4s had a fun football sports day in celebration of the super bowl. Now that it’s winter, the children are learning about the season and the many exciting things that happen when the temperature drops: ice, snow and how it melts, animals in winter, hibernation, and migration. The 2s even had an especially fun time celebrating ―Bear Day.‖ The children gathered in the sanctuary ballroom and played games, read stories, sang songs and had yummy snacks. Some of the 4s celebrated bear day a bit later in the month – with stick puppets, ―nighttime‖ fun and ―bedtime‖ stories! In January we also celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Though our school teaches tolerance and understanding of all people every day, on this holiday we make a special point of emphasizing how important it is to accept and enjoy the differences in people. The children made projects like dream-catchers, murals of hands of many colors and peace plates to reinforce and help them understand this message. The holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the New Year for the trees, was celebrated in mid-February. In the classrooms children were taught how important trees are for us and the environment through stories and fun projects. Some classes made their own trees and thought about what kind of tree they would be! Our new semester of after-school classes also began in February. Three and four year olds have the opportunity to eat lunch with their friends and explore popular programs such as Happy Feet soccer, 123 Go!, Story Jumper, Artist’s Studio, Nature and Weird, Wacky Science, Cooking, Rhythm, and Math Madness – just to name a few. In addition to the regular classroom winter curriculum, ECP children continue to enjoy all of our visiting specialists. The dentist came to say hello to the classes and explained to the children the value of eating healthy foods, brushing teeth correctly and how to keep a healthy smile! We also continue to have visits from our animal friends at Nature, Sports with Steve Stone, music with Tina, and Mad Science. We had our February vacation camp during the winter break. Children 3 to 6 years of age had the opportunity to come to school during vacation and have loads of fun! This program was open to KTI and non-KTI students. We have several upcoming events: Mah Jongg Fundraiser on Thursday March 2nd, 7:30pm. Just contact the ECP office or Joanna

Goldstein.

Tot Shabbat on Friday, March 24th. Please join us to welcome Shabbat with friends and family. Here’s hoping for an early spring! Robin Goldberg

KTI Religious School

March! Already? Well, if it’s March it must mean that Purim is right around the corner and Passover cannot be far behind! We are looking forward to a great Purim celebration which will be on March 12th beginning at 9:00am with a minyan and abbreviated Megillah reading. Then at 10:30am in the main sanctuary all of our young families ECP and Kindergarten through Bet will gather for a costume parade and Purim play. Then at 11:00am our carnival begins! Please note that we made a change from the original Religious School calendar last month and made Sunday, March 12, 2017, a mandatory ―school day‖ for KTI Religious School Families and we will not be holding classes the day before on March 11. All are expected to help us celebrate Purim on Sunday. If you are a Religious School older child and are creating a booth for the carnival you will have time to set up at 10:30am. This year’s Purimkiyadah is on March 14th! It is the first time in ―kiyadah‖ history that the Purimkiyadah will be used to break a tie from the Chanukiydah! We will have a host of new and exciting events for the teams to compete in and you never know who will win until the do! After all…it’s Purim! SCHOOL HIGHTLIGHT: THE KTI RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ART PROGRAM This year the Art Program at KTI's Hebrew School has encompassed a myriad of projects. In the beginning of the year students created Tzedakah boxes which the students then took home and have served as a way to collect and bring in tzedakah. This project serves as a reminder of the great need both locally and afar. Our second project was creating the word "Shalom," (peace) out of ceramic tiles predominantly in the colors of the Israeli flag. Many of our students took this sign home and placed it proudly in a prominent place in their home. The younger grades have also completed a Mezuzah project, both writing an abbreviated text, rolling it up and then decorating the box with the letter "Shin" and some marvelous designs. Finally under the inspiration and direction of Karen Stamatis, the entire upper school created ―Soup in a Jar‖ (containing all organic products) which were donated to local food pantries. The students also attached hand made holiday cards. To date we have created more that two dozen soup in a jar containers which have fed approximately 50 people! Our art program is a one of a kind in the religious school model and provides our kids with a wonderful way to express themselves while learning about art and Judaism! We are fortunate to have Karen Stamatis as our art instructor! Rabbi Sandy Zisser, Director of Education
