What is Adaption?
“An adaptation is a mutation, or genetic change, that helps an organism, such as a plant or animal, survive in its environment.”
Passed on from one generation to the next. The mutation becomes the adaption
Physical Adaption
An adaptation can be structural, meaning it is a physical part of the organism.
Examples;Lady bugs vibrant colorStick bugs camouflage appearance Glow worms glow to attract mate
Behavioral Adaption
Behavioral adaptions affect the way an organism acts.
Examples;Birds migrate in the winterLady Bugs play dead to avoid predators
Physiological Adaption
A metabolic or physiologic adjustment within the cell, or tissues, of an organism in response to an environmental stimulus resulting in the improved ability of that organism to cope with its changing environment.
Examples;Stink bugs give off potent smell to keep predators awayPoly Polys hard exoskeleton protects its organs
Australian (Giant Spiny) Leaf Insect
Appearance resembles leaves or sticks Camouflage for survival
Coccinellidae (Lady Bug)
Red is known to many bugs as being a poisonous color. Their joints give out a foul-tasting fluid. They can fly, and play dead
Common Glow Worm (China Glow Worm) The glow is a warning to predators. The glow worm is filled with
chemicals and it causes vomiting. For females the glow is to attract the male glow wormto reproduce.
Their cream colored body is banded with purple as a warning colour for protection from predators
The moths are camouflaged when resting
Xyloryctidae -Australian Wood Moth
Armadillidiidae- Roly Poly
Cannot bite or sting Exoskeleton with plates. They can roll up in a ball for protection Use odor as a defense.
Praying Mantis
They are ambush predators, and their coloring allows them to blend into their surroundings.
Triangular head allows for 180 degree rotation Long legs enables far jumps
