Made From Ash, with a hint of walnut for upright sitting. The process of designing this chair depended on the geometry of a 9 layer bent lamination with a 45 degree fillet. After bandsawing the lamination using a jig, the edges were spoke shaved until smooth. The mortise and tenon legs were notched around this arch, and the rest of the chair follows this element. The back and seats each have a slit which excentuate the grain running along the spine of the chair.

Petajavesi Church Visitor Center by the lake
Adam Lans
ASSEMBLY
The Old Church of Petäjävesi is situated right off of a freeway, which creates a parking problem for visitors. Rather than attempt to excavate the existing landscape for parking lot space, a boat house is created to serve as the visitor center. A parking lot can then be located accoss the lake from the church. After parking, visitors are boated across the lake and enjoy panoramic views of the church in context as they approach the church.

A gap is created between the Southern facade and interior (Section AA) which lets in the water from the lake. The Facade is made of a glass, mesh, and wood veener laminate, which permits ambient light into the main space. The water channel also has ambient lighting so as to create caustic water effects in the interior space. This informs occupants when on-coming boats are arriving.

Statement The school is located in East Liberty, between
Whole Foods Market and the proposed Market Hall.
The site’s surroundings are highly unusual. The school
faces an unkept alley on the southern portion of the
site. This created a new public front for the school, and
connected shoppers from Whole Foods to the new
Market Hall. The walkway allows the public to appreci-
ate the student’s work via public gardens and views
into private workshops and garden spaces. This new
elevated walkway and garden will breathe new life into
this underdeveloped and under-utilized area.
In addition to the public walkway, there is a
public cafe on the corner of South Highland Ave. The
public can get their food and take it up to the walkway
level and enjoy the views out towards Shadyside or the
East Liberty Church. The walkway level intersects the
existing pedestrian bridge to connect to the East Bus-
way.
The cafeteria, classrooms, and greenhouse, and
auditorium exist on the lower level. The greenhouse
connects to large outdoor growing area for when the
weather allows for outdoor growing.

Statement Watering systems and appropriate planting are
fundamental for the success of any urban garden. As
such, the school treats these as essential elements in the
spacial organization of the school. Water is collected,
used, and recycled, all within view of the students and
public users in the main wall of the school. Overall, the
goal is to enhance the student’s and public’s under-
standing and engagement with agriculture in an urban
context.
Being a school, security is a prime concern. As
such, there is one entrance into the school. The public
can engage with the walkway, the cafe, the mezzanine
level of the lecture hall, and a public garden where
public workshops can be held.
The school is broken into four main zones. The
public walkway, learning spaces, greenhouse, and
support spaces. The walkway intersects the learning
spaces like interlocking fingers to enhance the connec-
tion between the public and the school. The support
core is concentrated in the rear, against the alley. The
greenhouse pops up around the walkway so the public
can look in and view the plants.

SCHOOL FOR URBAN
AGRICULTURE
The School of Urban Agriculture creates a public walkway from Whole foods to the Farmers market, creating a new identity to an underdeveloped area. The school makes use of natural watering systems which are integrated into the building’s performance, and experience, both privately for the school, and publically for users who utilize the walkway.

The public
can engage with the walkway, the cafe, the mezzanine
level of the lecture hall, and a public garden where
public workshops can be held.

ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER
Sited in Frick Park, Pittsburgh, an Environmental Center is necessary for educating people on the natural environment and the park. Lecture halls are the key aspect of the programming. Lecture halls are designed such that when they are occupied, the floors lower over time, and the water harnessed from the on-site meadow gets compressed up the walls from the body weight of occupancy. This water both feeds a green roof, and can be identified by occupants on the path adjacent to the lecture hall in order to inform them about the activity in the building.
In the evening during lectures, the occupants in the lecture hall will compress the existing creek water up the wall by weight. Also at this time, the evening sun will shine through the wall. The same happens for the classrooms which take place in the morning, as the eastern sun will shine through their corresponding adjacent walls.
This lends life to lecture occupancy, as the occupants who walk along the public adjacent path witness this occurence.
The water ends up feedinga green roof
The water is cleaned and returned to the creek of the meadow, which gives back to the ecosystem on site.
