I consider myself a dabbler in all mediums, tangentially embracing my every whim and fascination, and seeking new levels of discipline in the realms I chase. Though I remain a professional graphic designer by day and a cartoonist at heart, minimalist painting has largely remained my greatest contribution and subversion to art. Much of what I’ve done in this arena of art prides itself on an almost clinical inanity and the blind pulse of abstract thought. My pursuit of high art remains adhered to geometric abstraction and its boundless avenues and potential.

STATEMENTA GENERAL BIOGRAPHY
ON OBJECTS AND SELF
G
I once made messes. Being some-what brash and clumsy with paint, and perhaps unwilling to challenge myself, I began my early abstrac-tions with a solitary flat brush and a flourish of tiny squares. The col-ors were somewhat muddy and indistinct, though I certainly wasn’t aiming for polish and precision. One of the paintings in this series seemed to evoke satellite photog-raphy, which had recently become something of a commonality. I rec-ognized this as not necessarily a coincidence, but more as an inevi-tability, as though the shapes I was mindlessly rendering had more to do with order and function than taste. Humanity has this very in-stitutional way of shaping itself, of parceling land and threading it with roads, cities and monuments. This foundation of human behavior, the understood relationship we have with one another and the world we live on, could be boiled down to shapes. It didn’t have to mean anything, but it meant a profound sum to me.
Seizing this realization, I decided that this was my contribution. This was what seemed open and far-reaching enough to study in visual form. It was around this time that my fascination with minimalism of every degree took hold. Everything that was reduced to its most es-sential melody was intoxicating. Just one color, one form, or even one line was all it took to beg a thousand questions concerning human nature. I took a small por-tion of one of these very early ab-stract paintings and enlarged it to an enormous size, mostly using scraps of wood and fabric that I had left over from other projects. It was thoughtful, but unripened. A somewhat less cohesive effort than I set out to achieve.
I then focused on the rectangle, large monochromatic canvases with modest linear deviations and accents. I focused on scale over substance and sought the “wow” factor I’d felt in recent museum trips. There was a disquiet in those early works that I’ve yet to revisit. They were perfect, in such a way as I’ve never considered them un-finished and have little interest in pursuing further.
For seven more years, I toyed with the shape. I found new avenues in my work to stay challenged and sharp, and I sought better equip-ment and materials to allow them to become somehow less human. The works grew with me, and they grew more complex. I myself somehow became less so, as the doubts and fears of a maturing mind began to seep into them.
Disillusion currently stands as my greatest solo effort, and by far the most stable collection of work I’ve wrought. It’s a dialogue within it-self, something of an autobiogra-phy wherein I’ve chronicled these reflections with vague gestures of electric tones, assertive constructs and exaggerated scale. I’ve iden-tified the passionate ego beneath the man, and the work has notice-ably distanced itself from the sim-ple studies of human patterns.
I still ask myself the same ques-tions, but I imagine they’re the same ones every artist asks.
What now.
It becomes less a matter of asking it, and rather an acknowledgment that there is somewhere else to go. A pattern to follow. A form to ex-plore. A mess to clean up.
