The Denver Community Center was a mixed-use com-
munity center at 33 Osage Street In Denver’s Lower
Highland neighborhood. This project was completed
during my undergraduate degree at the University of
Colorado. The main geometry was created through a
sequential morphology. The design gives hierarchy to
views of the Denver skyline. The layout utilizes a roof
garden, indoor/outdoor market, and fl exible gallery
space.

This 200 square foot cabin (the fi rst is the series) is a space which
has two main purposes. First and foremost is to connect the user
mentally and physically to the environment surrounding them. And
secondly gives the user a space to relax, and do work. Through the
procession of space, there are two key moments. The fi rst is when
you enter the space and receive the full 200 degree unobstructed
view of the surrounding forest. The second is when the user steps
out onto the balcony and receives all of the sensory experiences
(wind, rain, sun, smell, sounds). The combination of these moments
will engulf the user in a calm, relaxing work environment.

1. Priliminary structural concept model- Structural study
The second project in the series, is a 900 square foot Net-Zero cabin. This structure produces more energy
than it uses by optimizing several different methods of effi ciency. Some of these methods include passive solar,
passive cooling, the heat island effect, and a PV solar panel system. This design organizes circulation by its
public and private spaces which are perpendicular to primary the wet wall. The structure of this cabin is based
off of a 12 foot bay system. The primary structure of this cabin is stick framed using 6x6 columns. The exterior
walls are 2x6 studs, fl oor joists are 2x10’s at 16 inches on center. The 6x6 columns die into 6x10 beams with
bird mouthed 2x10 rafters at 2 feet on center. All construction is sheathed with a 3/4” O.S.B.

1. Completed foundation connection detail- 1-to-1 foundation detail
This foundation to column connection allows the pri-
mary structure to connect into the earth though a fl itch
plate detail. This fl itch plate was constructed from 1/4”
plate steel, bolted onto a ripped down 4x4 column and
bolted into a 1’ diameter concrete piling foundation.

This nature observatory intertwines with the environment around it. A rectangular opening was booleaned into
the facade in order to frame views for the users. A glass fl oor is incorporated in order to give the user a unique
understanding of their surroundings. The facade was created to allow diffuse light into the space to calm and
encapsulate the observers. This project was designed using parametric modeling (grasshopper and paneling
tools) in Rhinoceros 5, then was rendered using the Vray plug-in.

This project was for my Rhino class at the University of Colorado. The assignment was to
model a small and large object with as much precision at possible. The most diffi culty was
found while modeling the compound curves in the case of the violin, along with the helix of
the violin string.

This project was for my digital fabrication class at the University of Colorado. It is a laser cut fl at pack lamp.
This lamp is cut from a single 18×32 sheet of material. All connections slot into each other making tape or glue
obsolete. This lamp was designed in Rhino 5, and the face of the module was a grasshopper script. This lamp is
incredibly intuitive to put together, and can sit or hang depending on user preference.

The geometry was created from an adapted module to have three forms. These forms include a structural, panel and membrane form to implement in different architectural instances. Once we had these independent modules we manipulated scripts to aggre-gate the geometries. These different connections were used to create different poten-tial systems including canopy, enclosure, and structure. Finally we introduced a norma-tive planar element, to create an enclosed architectural system.

Projection Mapping: Project 1Pyramid Projection Animation
An initial Grasshopper/Kanga-roo installation prototype was created as a base for seek-ing possibilities and moving forward. This study led me to many iterations which even-tually drew me to step away from simple surfaces and ex-periment further with the idea of tessellated wall systems and projection mapping. After designing a successful surface for projection I also designed an animation which would enhance the geometry of the surface. This experimentation has the ability to change in scale and become architec-tural for a larger surface.

This elementary school was designed with a focus on two key principals, light and food. A greenhouse on the top floor is a combination ecological learning environment and cafeteria. This school capitalizes on an in house Farm-to-Table system which allows the students to learn how to grow and cook nutrient rich foods. The spline tubular structure gives op-portunities for solar gain, integrated wall sys-tems, and completely embedded mechanical systems. The geometry of the structure also lays out the vertical circulation of the spaces created.

Toy Aggregation Study
![Page 70: Adam Chernick - Architecture Portfolio 2015](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062502/579070fd1a28ab6874a0056f/html5/thumbnails/70.jpg)
This project was based on the disassembly of a toy. After accurate-ly digitally modeling the toy, it was broken up into a series of parts. We then chose multiple complex pieces of our series to fuse into a single homogeneous geometry. This new geometry was then used to create an aggregation which could be given designated emitters and rendered using Rhino with the Maxwell plug-in.

This project was for my Robotic Automa-tion in Architecture class. Our first project was to write a Grasshopper script to use the ABB 120 to draw a 2D picture on a large piece of paper. In order to create this drawing we used Rhino with Grass-hopper and the HAL plug-in.
My drawing used the black and white image data from a photograph of the Seattle Skyline to remap the image into a line drawing.

Robot Automation Scripting: Project 3Heat Formed Pavilion

The third project was to create a pavilion from heat formed plastic panels. The robot was used to lift the plastic panels, hold over the heat and press the melted panel over a mold. The end product creates a tessel-lated panel system that seamlessly integrates into that waffle bench system.

Brooklyn Residential Mixed-use
![Page 84: Adam Chernick - Architecture Portfolio 2015](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062502/579070fd1a28ab6874a0056f/html5/thumbnails/84.jpg)
The Brooklyn Residential Mixed-Use project was created during my second year at Pratt Institute. This project is a 300,000 sf residential building with integrated office and light industrial spaces. The development of the forms were created from a layering of systems. The first floor creates an interactive pedestrian street system where the users can have a close relationship with the human scale spaces. The second layer gives an opportunity for formal offices and rooftop spaces. The third layer is the residential system, laid out with a pseudo corridor loaded plan which gives hierarchy to views, passive solar light gain, and an intimate connection to the surrounding community
