This booklet was developed to give you a broad overview and understanding of the ADA sign regulations. We have
also included design tools and drawings to help you select or design a sign system that is both compliant and functional. Contents / Intro2
Signs that identify a room, space or area shall have raised characters and Braille. (703.1)
Signs shall have a non-glare finish with contrasting colors. (703.6.2)
Pictograms that identify a room, shall be in their own 6” high background. (703.6.1)
Character shall be San Serif and All Uppercase. (703.2.3) (703.2.2)
Characters shall be between 5/8” and 2”, with a minimum of 1/8” spacing. (703.2.5) (703.2.7)
Font shall be ADA compliant. Not overly bold, condensed, italic, etc. (703.2.4) (703.2.6)
A minimum 3/8” margin is required around all raised elements of the sign. (703.2.7)
Line Spacing shall be between 135 - 170% of character height. (703.3.8)
Braille shall be all together and 3/8” to 1/2” below last line of text. (703.3.2)

a non-glare matte finish. Shiny, glossy or reflective
surfaces are not compliant. This includes both the
sign panel and characters. In addition, signs need
to have good contrast between the background
color and the character color. Below are examples
of background colors with good contrasting

There are many rules that govern proper Braille use:
Braille shall be dome shaped - not flat or pointed.
Braille shall be precisely sized and spaced.

The two tables below were developed to help you determine the proper size of your sign based on the various ADA laws.
Use the instructions and example below to determine the necessary length and height of your sign.
1 - Select your letter size (We recommend a minimum of 3/4” letters).
2 - Determine the number of characters and spaces in the longest line of text.
3 - Determine the number of lines required.
4 - Use the tables below to determine the sign size. See example to the right.
The sign to the left has 3/4” letters with
13 characters and spaces across and 3 lines.
Using the two tables below, the sign would
have to be at least 6 x 9” to be ADA compliant.

On double doors with both leafs active, the sign shall be mounted on the right side.
When there is not enough wall space for mounting the sign use the nearest adjacent wall.
Ceiling or wall projection signs must have a minimum clearance of 80” from bottom of sign to the floor.
Maximum mounting height of tactile characters is 60” above floor to baseline of characters.
Minimum mounting height of Braille is 48” above floor to baseline of Braille cells.
