This summer, there are regionsaround the country that are shortof hay and forage. Other areashave surplus hay stacked in longrows in feed yards or at the sidesof hay fields. Buyers may see thissurplus as an option to fill theirbale yards now instead of worry-ing about securing hay supplieslater in the summer. Buyers arelooking for deals and sellers wantto make room for the next haycrop, everybody wins: well,maybe. Purchasers should besure to re-weigh and re-test year-old hay before purchasing.

“Hay is a perishable commod-ity that deteriorates when ex-posed to weather,” says BarryYaremcio, beef and forage spe-cialist with Alberta Agriculture andRural Development. “Time is afactor. For example, 90 days aftercutting, the vitamin precursorslose strength, and animals will re-quire supplementation. The fat

soluble vitamins A, D, and E arethe first nutrients to oxidize. In-jecting or feeding vitamins 90days after animals are taken offfresh forage is necessary untilthey are put back on pasture thefollowing spring.”

Bales that are stored under ashed, covered or wrapped in plas-tic do not deteriorate over the win-ter as much as hay storedunprotected outdoors. If you wereto feed test in the spring and com-pare it to the results from the pre-vious fall, the protein, fibre(energy) and mineral content ofthe hay stored under cover wouldbe very similar. These valueswould be much lower for hay thatis stored outdoors, uncovered onthe ground.

“In a six-foot diameter roundbale, 27 per cent of the baleweight is found in the outer fiveinches of the bale,” says Yaremcio.“For every inch of rain, 82 litres or

180 pounds (18 gallons) of waterwill land on the bale. Some willrun off, but some will enter thebale. When the exterior of the baleis rain soaked and is exposed toweather, it rots.

“More weather damage occursto legume hay compared to grasshay. Applying twine at four inchspacing reduces moisture entryinto the bale compared to baleswith twine at eight inch spacing.Net wrapped bales shed rain bet-ter and have less damage thanbales tied with twine. Baleswrapped with solid plastic havethe least amount of damage. Adense or tight bale sheds morewater than a loose bale.”

Late summer and fall rains canreduce bale weights by 8 to 12 percent. A bale weighing 1450pounds in July can shrink to 1275pounds by October, althoughthere may be no visible differencein bale size or appearance. If pay-

ing for hay by the pound, re-weighthe bales and adjust the weight toa standard 15 or 16 per cent mois-ture.

“Much of the 2010 hay cropwas rained on and turned manytimes before baling,” says Yarem-cio. “Hay growers who waited fourto eight weeks for the weather tochange, harvested a larger vol-ume of lower-quality, over-maturehay. Generally, the feeding valueof the 2010 forage crop was lowerthan what is considered to be av-erage quality from other years.

Last year’s bales that may havebeen baled wet (more than 20 percent moisture) will absorb mois-ture from fall rains or when in con-tact with wet soil. High levels ofmicrobial activity can be ex-pected.

“Molds and bacteria have tolive on something and what theyuse up first is the best nutrients,”says Yaremcio. “The soluble pro-teins and highly digestible sugarsare consumed leaving off-coloured moldy feed. Feed qualityof the hay is reduced. Weatherdamage can increase the indi-gestible fibre levels in hay by fiveper cent or more and reduce en-ergy levels by similar amounts.Hay that had 14 per cent proteinin the fall may only have 11 to 12per cent next spring, and total di-gestible nutrient (TDN) values canbe reduced from 65 to 58 percent. Again, cautionary adviceproducers should glean from thisinformation is that even if you seelast years’ feed test results, re-weigh and re-test the hay beforepurchasing.

“If you compare the feedingvalue of straw and good hay fromprevious years, much of the 2010hay had the nutrient contentabout half way between straw andnormal good quality hay. Proteinwas lower, acid detergent fibreand neutral detergent fibre levelsmuch higher, and energy contentwas reduced. The impact of thislower quality showed up withmany cows coming through atough winter carrying less condi-tion than what is required.”

If producers expect this olderfeed to be the majority of thisyears’ feeding program, proteinand energy supplementation willbe required to meet animal re-quirements. As a guideline, haymade in 2010 should not be morethan 25 to 30 per cent of the for-age in the ration for cows in earlyto mid-pregnancy and 15 to 20per cent in late pregnancy. De-pending on quality, year-old haymay not be suitable to include inlactating cow or newly weanedcalf rations.

Coming up with a fair pricewhen buying year-old hay:

• weigh the bales – don’t useaverage weights from last fall

• take a representative sampleand test the feed to ensure thatthe quality meets requirements

• price should reflect the 10 percent reduction in digestibility forhay that was stored outdoors (ifcows cannot digest the hay effi-ciently, more nutrients end up inthe manure)

• compare the price of year-oldhay to greenfeed or straw, andpay according to quality not for-age type
