changed colour and the gentle breeze became a wind that tossed the boat high on the rough waves. Even
the fishermen were afraid!

When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshipped and gave thanks to the LORD, saying,
“He is good; his love endures for ever.” Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty—he is the King of glory.
Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came
with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses
because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!
Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from seeing the end of what was passing away. But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see: to him be honour and might for ever. Amen.

Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God. He said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to

When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount
Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud. To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai.
When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. But whenever he entered the LORD’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD.

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon
called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there,
he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
If others think they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for
righteousness based on the law, faultless. But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose
sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming
like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

Who’s the baby?
It’s Jesus, of course. Most
people know him as a baby in
a manger. Not so many people
know that when the baby
grew up, the things he did and
said changed the world.
‘He helped me
to see again,’ said
Bartimaeus. For
years Bartimaeus
had sat blind by the
roadside. When he
met Jesus, all that changed.
‘He changed my life,’
said Zacchaeus. For years
Zacchaeus had been a crook,
stealing people’s money.
When he met Jesus he too was
changed. He gave away half of
what he had.
We read about Jesus in a
book of special writings called
the Bible. The Bible shows
that Jesus was a real person
who really lived. It tells us that
Jesus did all kinds of special
things. So special that ever
since, people have said, ‘Who
is Jesus?’
There was something very
special about Jesus. When
Jesus came to a town
everybody knew about it.
Lots of people went to hear
what he had to say about
God.
Jesus was a natural leader.
He knew what he was talking
about. Crowds of people
came from miles around.
They listened to him for days
because he acted and spoke
with authority.
Jesus had special power,
which he used for good.
Once, he went sailing with
his friends. A storm blew up.
Jesus’ friends were afraid they
were going to drown. But
when Jesus said to the
waves, ‘Be still,’ the
storm stopped. And
his friends said ‘Who is
this?’
Jesus accepted people. He
didn’t turn anyone away. It
didn’t matter what they had
done. He loved them for who
they were. Once, when Jesus
was having dinner, a woman
came in. She had done many
wrong things. Most of the
people there didn’t like her.
They disapproved of her. She
kissed Jesus’ feet because he
didn’t hate her like the others.
Jesus told her she would be
forgiven for the wrong things
she had done.

QSoon after Jesus was born,
‘Wise Men’ came to visit him.
They came from a country to
the east of Bethlehem. They
came to worship a new baby
king. They are sometimes,
wrongly, called the Three
kings.
Who were they? The Bible
calls them ‘Magi’ (May-ji).
‘Magi’ means either ‘wise men’,
‘priests’ or ‘astrologers’ - people
who study the stars.
How did they know
a new king had been
born? They saw a new
star. To them, this
meant that something
special had happened.
The ‘new star’ may have been
three planets shining together.
Around this time Jupiter, venus
and Saturn shone from the same
point in the sky. Together, they
would have shone very brightly.
The Magi went first
to Jerusalem. There they
asked king Herod about
the new king. Herod was
a friend of Julius Caesar.
He had been king since
37BC. He was a cruel man and
later tried to kill Jesus.
The Magi found out that
God’s special king would be
born in Bethlehem. The star led
them there, and they found the
baby Jesus.
We don’t know much about
birthdays in the time of Jesus.
But we do know that soon
after he was born he received
three special presents.
The presents were brought
by the Magi, or Wise Men.
The Wise Men brought gold,
frankincense and myrrh.
Gold is the most
precious metal.
Frankincense and myrrh
are both a kind of gum
or resin that oozes from
trees, and have a strong, nice
smell. In those days, both were
expensive perfumes, not the
sort of gift for an ‘ordinary’
baby. The gold, frankincense and
myrrh may all have been ways of
saying ‘this is God’s special king’.
There were also other uses
for frankincense and myrrh.
Frankincense was burned as
part of worshipping God in the
Temple and myrrh was
used as a medicine and
a pain-killer. It was also
as a sweet-smelling spice
which was put on dead
bodies before they were
buried. These presents
could have showed that Jesus
was God’s special priest, and
foretold his death.
Whatever the three gifts
meant, they were all expensive:
worthy things to offer to Jesus.

Imagine it’s your
school’s Christmas
play. Joseph has
taken Mary to
Bethlehem. There’s
no room for them in
the inn. So when Mary has a
baby boy his cot is a manger
- an animal’s feeding trough.
Who’s the baby?
It’s Jesus, of course. Most
people know him as a baby in
a manger. Not so many people
know that when the baby
grew up, the things he did and
said changed the world.
‘He helped me
to see again,’ said
Bartimaeus. For
years Bartimaeus
had sat blind by the
roadside. When he
met Jesus, all that changed.
‘He changed my life,’
said Zacchaeus. For years
Zacchaeus had been a crook,
stealing people’s money.
When he met Jesus he too was
changed. He gave away half of
what he had.
We read about Jesus in a
book of special writings called
the Bible. The Bible shows
that Jesus was a real person
who really lived. It tells us that
Jesus did all kinds of special
things. So special that ever
since, people have said, ‘Who
is Jesus?’
There was something very
special about Jesus. When
Jesus came to a town
everybody knew about it.
Lots of people went to hear
what he had to say about
God.
Jesus was a natural leader.
He knew what he was talking
about. Crowds of people
came from miles around.
They listened to him for days
because he acted and spoke
with authority.
Jesus had special power,
which he used for good.
Once, he went sailing with
his friends. A storm blew up.
Jesus’ friends were afraid they
were going to drown. But
when Jesus said to the
waves, ‘Be still,’ the
storm stopped. And
his friends said ‘Who is
this?’
Jesus accepted people. He
didn’t turn anyone away. It
didn’t matter what they had
done. He loved them for who
they were. Once, when Jesus
was having dinner, a woman
came in. She had done many
wrong things. Most of the
people there didn’t like her.
They disapproved of her. She
kissed Jesus’ feet because he
didn’t hate her like the others.

forgiven for the wrong things
she had done.

QSoon after Jesus was born,
‘Wise Men’ came to visit him.
They came from a country to
the east of Bethlehem. They
came to worship a new baby
king. They are sometimes,
wrongly, called the Three
kings.
Who were they? The Bible
calls them ‘Magi’ (May-ji).
‘Magi’ means either ‘wise men’,
‘priests’ or ‘astrologers’ - people
who study the stars.
How did they know
a new king had been
born? They saw a new
star. To them, this
meant that something
special had happened.
The ‘new star’ may have been
three planets shining together.
Around this time Jupiter, venus
and Saturn shone from the same
point in the sky. Together, they
would have shone very brightly.
The Magi went first
to Jerusalem. There they
asked king Herod about
the new king. Herod was
a friend of Julius Caesar.
He had been king since
37BC. He was a cruel man and
later tried to kill Jesus.
The Magi found out that
God’s special king would be
born in Bethlehem. The star led
them there, and they found the
baby Jesus.
We don’t know much about
birthdays in the time of Jesus.
But we do know that soon
after he was born he received
three special presents.
The presents were brought
by the Magi, or Wise Men.
The Wise Men brought gold,
frankincense and myrrh.
Gold is the most
precious metal.
Frankincense and myrrh
are both a kind of gum
or resin that oozes from
trees, and have a strong, nice
smell. In those days, both were
expensive perfumes, not the
sort of gift for an ‘ordinary’
baby. The gold, frankincense and
myrrh may all have been ways of
saying ‘this is God’s special king’.
There were also other uses
for frankincense and myrrh.
Frankincense was burned as
part of worshipping God in the
Temple and myrrh was
used as a medicine and
a pain-killer. It was also
as a sweet-smelling spice
which was put on dead
bodies before they were
buried. These presents
could have showed that Jesus
was God’s special priest, and
foretold his death.
Whatever the three gifts
meant, they were all expensive:
worthy things to offer to Jesus.

soldiers and families and animals, and more people looking for
somewhere to stay than there were places to put them.
Joseph found a place where they could shelter for the night.
They shared it with the animals that were kept there, but Mary
knew she could wait no longer. Not long afterwards, the cries
of a tiny new baby mixed with the sounds of night-time in Beth-
lehem. It was Mary’s baby son. She remembered what the angel
Gabriel had said.
‘Jesus,’ she whispered. ‘Your name is Jesus.’
Mary wrapped up her baby warmly and made a bed for him in the
manger, filled with hay.

acob loved his large family – but he loved Joseph most of all. When
he gave him a beautiful coloured coat, his brothers muttered among

somehow, in his dreams, he was always the best brother, the impor-

It was time to do something about Joseph. His broth-

more. They waited till he came to visit them in the fields far from
home – and then they threw him into an empty well. While they were
still thinking about what to do next, some traders passed by. The
brothers rubbed their hands together greedily – and sold Joseph
for some silver coins.
While Joseph was taken away to be a slave in Egypt, Jacob
wept over the story of his son, attacked by wild animals – and lost
to him for ever…

Adam and Eve were good company for each other. They shared the work and they lived happily together. Adam gave names to all the creatures that God had made.
God told them that they could eat anything that grew in the garden except the fruit of one tree in the middle of the garden, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Good and evilGenesis 3:1-7
One of the creatures in the garden was a snake.
He came to Eve and tempted her. ‘Did God really tell you not to eat from
any of the trees in the garden?’ he asked.‘God told us we can eat from every
tree, except the tree in the middle of the garden,’ said Eve. ‘If we eat from that tree, we will die.’
‘You will not die… ’ said the snake. ‘God does not want you to eat from that
tree because if you do, you will know good and evil just as God does.’
Eve looked at the tree. She saw how lovely its fruit looked and thought about what the snake had said. She took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave it to Adam and he ate some too.
As soon as they had eaten, Adam and Eve knew what they had done. They realized why God had told them not to eat the fruit. Now they had disobeyed God and it was too late to put things right. They felt guilty and ashamed and when they heard God coming in the garden, they found trees to hide among so he would not see them.

In the beginning there was nothing. It was dark and empty and shapeless.
‘Let there be light!’ God said. As soon as he had said the words, light came into existence. God saw that the light was good. God divided the light, so that there was day and there was night.
God made the sky and separated it from the waters below.
God brought the waters together into seas and created dry land.
‘Let the land produce plants and trees full of seeds and fruits,’ God said. Then all varieties of green and leafy vegetation filled the land, from tall redwood trees to trees bearing olives and oranges, acorns and chestnuts. God saw that all he had
made was good.‘Let there be lights in the sky for the
night and the day,’ God said. ‘Let them mark times and seasons, days, months and years.’ So the golden sun became the light that shone in the day and the silvery moon the light that beamed in the night sky. God also filled the darkness with stars, and saw that all he had made was good.
‘Let the waters be filled with living creatures and the skies with every kind of winged bird. Let them multiply and increase in number.’ Then every kind of fish and sea creature swam and splashed in the seas and the air above became filled with colour and shape and sound. There were dolphins and sea horses, eagles, owls, robins and wrens, buzzing bees and beautiful butterflies.
‘Let there be all sorts of creatures to move on the land,’ God said. So there were sheep and goats, elephants and giraffe, lions, tigers and graceful gazelles.
God looked at everything that he had made and saw that it was good.
Then God made man and woman. He put them in charge of his creation, to care for it and cultivate it for food. God loved the people he had made and he saw that everything he had made was very good. Then God rested.

shepherds hear The newsLuke 2:8-20
While Jesus was being cradled by his mother Mary, shepherds were
on the hills outside Bethlehem, looking after their flocks of sheep.
The soft flickering flames suddenly gave way to dazzling light as an angel appeared in the night sky. The shepherds were terrified.
‘Don’t be afraid!’ said the angel. ‘I
have come with good news! Tonight, in Bethlehem, a baby has been born who is the Saviour of the world. You will find him wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.’
Then the sound of hundreds of angels, singing and praising God, filled their ears.
‘Glory to God in the highest heaven!’ the angels sang. ‘And peace on earth.’
The shepherds wasted no time. They ran down the hillside, determined to find the baby who had been born that night.
They found the place where Mary and Joseph were staying, and knew that this baby, lying in the manger, was the baby the angels had spoken of.
They went from there to tell everyone what they had seen and heard so that no one could be in any doubt about who the baby was. But Mary, watching Jesus sleeping, thought about all she had heard that night.

The lonG-awaiTed saviourLuke 2:21-40
When Jesus was just over a month old, Mary and Joseph prepared
to take him to the temple in Jerusalem. They went to thank God for his safe birth and offer a sacrifice of two pigeons.
As they went into the temple courts, they met there a man called Simeon. Simeon had been waiting for the day when God would send his Messiah – the chosen one who would save his people. He believed that God had promised him that he would see this Saviour before he died.
When Simeon saw Mary and Joseph and the baby boy in their arms, he knew that the special day had arrived. He took Jesus from them and praised God.
‘Lord, you can let me now die in peace, because I have seen with my own eyes the Saviour you have promised your people. This child will reveal your truth to all people on earth and be everything the Jewish nation have been waiting for.’
Mary and Joseph listened in some surprise to his words but before they had taken it all in, an elderly woman approached them. Anna was a prophetess who had lived in the temple, praying and worshipping God for most of her long life. She also knew that Jesus was God’s chosen one. And she thanked God for him.
Mary and Joseph made their offering.
They wondered at all they had learned that day about their baby son.

wise men from The easTMatthew 2:1-8
Wise men living in the east had been studying the night skies when
Jesus was born. They saw a strange new star and wondered what it could mean.
They set out on a journey, following the star, because they thought it heralded the birth of a new king, and they wanted to worship him.
When they reached Jerusalem, they stopped at King Herod’s palace.
‘Where is the child born to be king of the Jewish people?’ they asked. ‘We have come to pay our respects, to welcome and worship him.’
Herod was disturbed by their arrival. What king could there be apart from him? Quickly, Herod consulted the chief priests and teachers of the law. They told him what they knew from the ancient prophecies: the king would be born in Bethlehem.
Herod then talked to his eastern visitors and tried to find out exactly when they had first seen the star. This way he could know how old the baby might be.
Then he sent them to Bethlehem.‘If you find the king,’ he said, craftily,
‘let me know. I would like to be able to worship him as well.’

‘Let there be light!’ God said. As soon as he had said the words, light came into existence. God saw that the light was good. God divided the light, so that there was day and there was night.
God made the sky and separated it from the waters below.
God brought the waters together into seas and created dry land.
‘Let the land produce plants and trees full of seeds and fruits,’ God said. Then all varieties of green and leafy vegetation filled the land, from tall redwood trees to trees bearing olives and oranges, acorns and chestnuts. God saw that all he had
made was good.‘Let there be lights in the sky for the
night and the day,’ God said. ‘Let them mark times and seasons, days, months and years.’ So the golden sun became the light that shone in the day and the silvery moon the light that beamed in the night sky. God also filled the darkness with stars, and saw that all he had made was good.
‘Let the waters be filled with living creatures and the skies with every kind of winged bird. Let them multiply and increase in number.’ Then every kind of fish and sea creature swam and splashed in the seas and the air above became filled with colour and shape and sound. There were dolphins and sea horses, eagles, owls, robins and wrens, buzzing bees and beautiful butterflies.
‘Let there be all sorts of creatures to move on the land,’ God said. So there were sheep and goats, elephants and giraffe, lions, tigers and graceful gazelles.
God looked at everything that he had made and saw that it was good.
Then God made man and woman. He put them in charge of his creation, to care for it and cultivate it for food. God loved the people he had made and he saw that everything he had made was very good. Then God rested.

shepherds hear The newsLuke 2:8-20
While Jesus was being cradled by his mother Mary, shepherds were
on the hills outside Bethlehem, looking after their flocks of sheep.
The soft flickering flames suddenly gave way to dazzling light as an angel appeared in the night sky. The shepherds were terrified.
‘Don’t be afraid!’ said the angel. ‘I
have come with good news! Tonight, in Bethlehem, a baby has been born who is the Saviour of the world. You will find him wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.’
Then the sound of hundreds of angels, singing and praising God, filled their ears.
‘Glory to God in the highest heaven!’ the angels sang. ‘And peace on earth.’
The shepherds wasted no time. They ran down the hillside, determined to find the baby who had been born that night.
They found the place where Mary and Joseph were staying, and knew that this baby, lying in the manger, was the baby the angels had spoken of.
They went from there to tell everyone what they had seen and heard so that no one could be in any doubt about who the baby was. But Mary, watching Jesus sleeping, thought about all she had heard that night.

The lonG-awaiTed saviourLuke 2:21-40
When Jesus was just over a month old, Mary and Joseph prepared
to take him to the temple in Jerusalem. They went to thank God for his safe birth and offer a sacrifice of two pigeons.
As they went into the temple courts, they met there a man called Simeon. Simeon had been waiting for the day when God would send his Messiah – the chosen one who would save his people. He believed that God had promised him that he would see this Saviour before he died.
When Simeon saw Mary and Joseph and the baby boy in their arms, he knew that the special day had arrived. He took Jesus from them and praised God.
‘Lord, you can let me now die in peace, because I have seen with my own eyes the Saviour you have promised your people. This child will reveal your truth to all people on earth and be everything the Jewish nation have been waiting for.’
Mary and Joseph listened in some surprise to his words but before they had taken it all in, an elderly woman approached them. Anna was a prophetess who had lived in the temple, praying and worshipping God for most of her long life. She also knew that Jesus was God’s chosen one. And she thanked God for him.
Mary and Joseph made their offering.
They wondered at all they had learned that day about their baby son.

wise men from The easTMatthew 2:1-8
Wise men living in the east had been studying the night skies when
Jesus was born. They saw a strange new star and wondered what it could mean.
They set out on a journey, following the star, because they thought it heralded the birth of a new king, and they wanted to worship him.
When they reached Jerusalem, they stopped at King Herod’s palace.
‘Where is the child born to be king of the Jewish people?’ they asked. ‘We have come to pay our respects, to welcome and worship him.’
Herod was disturbed by their arrival. What king could there be apart from him? Quickly, Herod consulted the chief priests and teachers of the law. They told him what they knew from the ancient prophecies: the king would be born in Bethlehem.
Herod then talked to his eastern visitors and tried to find out exactly when they had first seen the star. This way he could know how old the baby might be.
Then he sent them to Bethlehem.‘If you find the king,’ he said, craftily,
‘let me know. I would like to be able to worship him as well.’

Mary’s baby boy
A long time ago, the Roman emperor, Augustus, called for a census. He sent everyone back to the place
where their family came from to be counted. Among the people who went to Bethlehem, in
a tiny corner of the empire, were Mary and Joseph. Mary was expecting a baby, and while she was in Bethlehem, Mary’s baby son was born. They called him Jesus. Mary wrapped him in strips of cloth and made a bed for him among the soft hay in a manger.
That night there were shepherds out in the fields, looking after their sheep. Angels appeared
to them, announcing the birth of a Saviour who would bring peace to the world.
The shepherds found the baby wrapped in
strips of cloth, just as the angel had told them. Then they returned to their sheep, thanking God for all they had seen and heard.

The crown of thorns
Only the Roman governor could agree to have Jesus punished by death. But Pontius Pilate could
find no fault with Jesus. One person could be released on the day of the
Passover. So Pilate asked the crowd, ‘Shall I set free the murderer Barabbas? Or this man, Jesus?’
The priests had already told the crowd what to say. ‘Barabbas!’ shouted the loudest voices. ‘We want
Barabbas!’‘And what should I do with Jesus?’ Pilate asked again.
‘Crucify him!’ they shouted.The soldiers took Jesus
away with a crown of thorns on
his head and wearing a purple cloak. They made fun of him, before taking him to his death.

‘It’s my fault,’ said Jonah. ‘I’m running away from God.
Throw me into the sea and you will be safe.’So they did.
The storm stopped. The sailors were saved. So was Jonah.Glub, gulp, swish, swish. Jonah was swallowed
by a great big fish! He had time to think. He had time to thank God and pray.
‘I’m truly sorry for running away,’ he told God. ‘I will keep my promise to do whatever you ask.’
The big fish burped. Jonah bounced on to a beach. Jonah got a second chance.

looked delicious. She ate some and gave some to Adam. Adam ate some too.
Suddenly, they knew what it was to do bad things and they felt bad. They made a bad choice. We all do.

Have you ever wished that you said ‘yes’ the first time you were asked to do something? Then you know how Jonah felt when he was swallowed by a big fish.
‘Jonah, go to Nineveh,’ God said. ‘Tell them I see the bad things they are doing. I want them to change.’
‘It’s my fault,’ said Jonah. ‘I’m running away from God.
Throw me into the sea and you will be safe.’So they did.
The storm stopped. The sailors were saved. So was Jonah.Glub, gulp, swish, swish. Jonah was swallowed
by a great big fish! He had time to think. He had time to thank God and pray.
‘I’m truly sorry for running away,’ he told God. ‘I will keep my promise to do whatever you ask.’
The big fish burped. Jonah bounced on to a beach. Jonah got a second chance.
It’s best to say yes the first time.

‘Did you see him heal the blind man?’ someone else asked.
‘I heard about a miracle with some bread and a couple of little fish – they say thousands of people shared a boy’s lunch!’
‘What about the lepers, then? Ten of them healed and went back to live with their families, I heard.’
‘So – he must have come for the Passover. Look! Here he is! Praise Jesus! Praise Jesus, the king!’

So it was that Moses and Aaron found themselves in front of the great Egyptian Pharaoh.
‘The God of the Israelites, the God of all the world, says, “Let my people go!”’ they said.
‘Who is this God?’ Pharaoh thundered. ‘Why should I do what he tells me?’ Pharaoh relied on his thousands of Israelite slaves. He had no plans to set them free – not even when God sent plagues on the land of Egypt.
Aaron struck the water of the river Nile with his stick and the water turned blood red. Then Moses and Aaron went again to Pharaoh.
‘God says, “Let my people go!”’At first Pharaoh agreed – he wanted God to take
the plague away. But as soon as the water was green again, Pharaoh changed his mind.
God sent a plague of frogs to invade
their beds and cooking pots. There were frogs wherever they turned!
‘God says, “Let my people go!”’ said Moses and Aaron.
Once more Pharaoh agreed – and then he changed his mind. God sent ten plagues altogether – biting gnats and swarms of flies; disease on all the animals kept by the Egyptians; itchy, sore boils over all the Egyptian people; a hailstorm that destroyed their crops; locusts that stripped whatever was left; deep darkness for three whole days; and finally, the tenth plague, when the first-born males of all the Egyptians died. The tenth plague changed Pharaoh’s mind.
‘Go, go, go!’ said Pharaoh.

God had kept the Israelites safe throughout the final plague. He had warned them to prepare for a long jour-ney, eating one last meal – the Passover meal – of roast lamb with bitter herbs and bread made without yeast. They had marked their doorposts with the blood of the lamb. And the angel of death had passed over them.
Now they were following Moses – and God was leading them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of bright fire by night – out of Egypt and out of slavery.
But as soon as the Israelites had gone, Pharaoh changed his mind again! He sent an army of horses and chariots to bring them all back.
When the Israelites reached the sandy banks of the Red Sea, they realized that the sea was in front of them and the Egyptian army was coming up fast behind them…
‘Hold out your hand over the sea, Moses,’ said God. And the sea parted to let them cross, safely to the other side. Then Moses held out his hand again and the waters closed up – so that the chariots of the Egyptian army who had pursued them were washed away.

slowly made his way towards her, picking his way through the crowd. Mary
handed Jesus to the old man.The man, whose name was Simeon, cradled the child in
his arms, and then he spoke, his eyes overflowing with tears.‘Sovereign Lord,’ he said. ‘You have kept your promise to me. I have seen the Saviour of the
world!’He handed Jesus back to Mary. Mary

At that moment, an old woman called Anna came up to them. She smiled and her face lit up with joy as she praised God.

ORejoicing With the Angels in Heaven!
The Gloria Suddenly there was a host of angels praising God and singing,
“Glory to God in the highest!”luke 2:13
On the night I was born, my Father sent angels to some shepherds on a hillside. The
angels told them about my birth. And off the shepherds went to find me in the stable
in Bethlehem.
Now it is time for you to join the angels around the altar, singing my praises
in the prayer of the Church, the Gloria. Yes, angels are here right now! Even your
guardian angel is singing this prayer. Ask my Holy Spirit to give you a picture in your
mind of all the angels here in church with you.
I love to hear you say, “We give you thanks. We praise
you for your glory.” Think of something you are especially
thankful for. Maybe you can thank me for your family, your
friends, and the fun times you have. Or you can thank me for
how I take care of you each day.
Did you know that your praises reach me in heaven? In
heaven I sit at the right hand of my Father. There’s so much
love and laughter. Everyone is so happy to be with us and
with each other. Heaven is such an awesome place!

The apostle Thomas had a hard time believing that I had risen from the dead. But
when he saw me with his own eyes and put his hands in my wounds, he believed. He
said to me, “My Lord and my God!”
My Holy Spirit helps you to believe. When you were baptized, you received the
seed of faith. What a gift! And guess what? Whenever you spend time talking and
listening to me at home or at Mass, you will come to know more and more in your
heart who I am and what I have done for you!
It was my early apostles who put together the prayer of the Church called the
Creed. It tells the story of the Trinity: how my Father created the world, how I came
to live on earth, and how the Holy Spirit, who spoke to the prophets, helps guide you
and the Church.
My friend, how delighted we are when we hear you say aloud these truths. And
just as I told Thomas, you are blessed—for believing in me and for telling others
how much I love them.
I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
