First Annual Community Activist Award


Jayne Ace-Bosgra

Jayne Ace-Bosgra of Hawthorne lives by two basic philosophies: “Do Unto Others

as You Would Have Them Do Unto You” and “Count Your Blessings.” These have guided her involvement in her community, whether it’s leading various civic, community or school groups, campaigning for local office, working for local, county, state and national candidates, or fostering newborns in the adoption system. It has also guided her throughout her professional career, first as a product trainer for the Xerox Corporation and now as a customer trainer with Superior Technical Resources.

Jayne’s goal in life is to leave things better than she found them. This is why she is always an active member of any group she joins. Currently, she is president of Democrats for Hawthorne;

vice president of the Friends of the Louis Bay 2nd Library in Hawthorne, and secretary of Women Empowered Democratic Organization (WE DO) of Passaic County. She is a member of the Hawthorne Democratic Organization, having been elected to represent Ward 3, District 2 in 2010. She has been a member of the Hawthorne Board of Health since 2006, where she served two terms as president. She is also a charter member of the Hawthorne Historical Society and serves on several committees at the Abundant Life Reformed Church in Wyckoff, where she and her husband Jake, worship. Additionally, when her sons Dan and Joe were younger, she was active in the parent-teacher organizations at their schools, serving as president of the Hawthorne High School PTO and president of the PTSO at Passaic County Technical Institute.

For the past six years, Jayne and Jake have volunteered their time as interim care providers for Spence-Chapin Family Services, an adoption agency in New York. During this time they have nurtured 39 babies from hospital discharge through adoption. These little “blessings,” as Jayne calls them, have gone everywhere with the couple, working the polls on Election Day, going to meetings and church services, campaigning door-to-door, attending fundraisers, and learning at an early age the benefits of contributing to your community.


Isabel Agudelo

Isabel Agudelo has been a resident of the city of Passaic for 31 years; She currently

works for the city of Passaic at the Collector’s Office. Isabel was born in Colombia S.A. I am the ninth among 4 brothers and 9 sisters, and the first in her family to attend and finish Higher Education; She attended ‘Universidad Technologica’ of Pereira where she reveived a degree in Industrial Technology. Her first jobs were for a Corporation, and for INEM , (Institute of diversified Education).

Trying to trace the path of future, and to enrich educational opportunities, She moved to The

United States on February 1981. The first ten years, She was dedicated to work and support her family, while working on her legal status. As she became a naturalized Citizen and in the middle of a divorce process, she started to study English at 33 years old at PCCC, and started to work at The Financial Aid Office. There, she graduated with Highest Honors and got an AAS degree in Computers Science; then, she transferred to Thomas Edison State College, where she got a Bachelor of Science in Administration with a core in CIS. The National Dean List published her biography as one of the best students of 1994.

On search for professional success, she engaged in public affairs, advocating for Immigration, social causes, and fighting for equal opportunities for women and minorities. With the sincere desire to become a pioneer student on Online Education, she enrolled through the London University, at AIU (American Intercontinental University), where she got a Master of Management in Information Technology with a core in Internet Security.Isabel is a mom of Juan Felipe, and a proud grand-ma of three grand kids, Brian, Jean Louis, and Janiris my little ones. Isabel currently lives with her dog bobby.


Maritza Davila

Maritza Davila was born in December 19, 1971 in Paterson, New Jersey in St. Josephs

Hospital. She is the youngest of four. She has two sisters and a brother. She was born to Awilda Morales and Jose F. Davila. Maritza has lived all of her life in Paterson. She also is a mother of a 13 year old son Eusebio Jr. She attended elementary school #20 class of 1985. She then went to Eastside High School and graduated in 1989. After graduation with the encouragement of her mother, she decided that a high school diploma wasn’t enough and was accepted into Monmouth University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 1993. Her concentration was in Public Relations and Journalism.

During her undergraduate years Maritza assisted children from different public schools in Asbury Park and Long Branch to read and write. She was quoted in the Herald News in 1990 as “Doing the Right Thing”. After graduating from Monmouth, Maritza worked as an assistant in the EOF office.

In 1994 Maritza saw the opportunity to come back home and give back to her community; Passaic County Community College hired her as a Bilingual Admissions Counselor. Throughout her employment with PCCC Maritza became a Designated School official for immigration. Currently she is the DSO for all international students at the college. She is also a member of The Middle States Association of Collegiate Registrars and officers of Admissions (MSACROA), Member of Passaic County School Counselors Association (PCSCA), and Member of New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling (NJACAC), Member of Women Empowered Democratic Organization (WEDO), Vice Chair of Friends of Passaic County Parks, and Democratic County Committee Member for her district. Maritza was also the past Board President for Community Action for Social Affairs (CASA).

Maritza obtained a Masters degree in Administrative Science at Farleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in May 2005. In September of that year she became the Assistant Director of Admissions. Maritza has 18 years of higher education experience and has been working with Passaic County children and nontraditional adults for a better future. In her free time Maritza volunteers her time working for the Democratic Party and its elected officials/candidates. She has done free Citizenship Drives for the Bengali Community and many others, toy drives, clothes drives and volunteered during thanksgiving at the YMCA. She has volunteered for Paterson Sweeps and also sits as a Paterson Planning Board Commissioner.

Maritza has received numerous awards. In 2010 she received the Paterson City Mayors “Women Changing Paterson” award, In that same year she was inducted into the ASPIRA Hall of Fame, 2009 Excellence Award from Cambio Newspaper for Communitarian Services, 2008 Education Award from Vista Panoramica, 2005 Presidents Citation for outstanding contribution to Passaic County Community College and many more……


Yolanda Esquiche

Yolanda Esquiche has been an integral part of

the Prospect Park community for over 30 years.

She has and continues to serve her community

working as an active participant in the political

process.

Mrs Esquiche currently serves as president of

the Peruvian Teacher’s Association. She is well

known as a trustee at Passaic County Community

College. Yolanda is a licensed drug & alcohol

therapist and works as a social worker at The

Harbor House Clinic of St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Mrs. Esquiche is an active member of the Prospect

Park Democratic County Committee where she

has been a member for over 11 years.

She is a commissioner on the Planning Board of

the borough of Prospect Park and has played an

active role in local, county and state elections for

over 30 years.

A strong voter advocate a favorite quote from her

favorite president Franklin D. Roosevelt sums up

her philosophy: “Nobody will ever deprive the

American people of the right to vote except the

American people themselves and the only way

they could do this is by not voting.”


Joanne J. Graziano

Joanne J. Graziano, a lifelong resident of Hawthorne, embodies what the

word “volunteer” truly means. She has dedicated the majority of her adult life to community service, through her involvement in various organizations including the Hawthorne Zoning Board of Adjustment, Hawthorne Boys and Girls Club, Hawthorne Friends of the Library and currently, the Hawthorne Municipal Alliance (Drug and Alcohol Prevention) where she serves as Chairperson. At the present time, she is also serving as a Founding Member of the Passaic County Coalition United for Prevention, dealing with issues that we face in today’s society.

Her professional career of thirty-two years in the Paterson Public School System as a Teacher and Administrator enhanced her ability to continue to help others. She was able to develop her professional career by being elected a Hawthorne Board of Education Member for seventeen years where she served as President, Vice President and Trustee.

Her love of children was not only evident in her town of Hawthorne, but also spread throughout Passaic County by being elected to the Passaic County School Board Association, serving as President, Vice President and Secretary. As a result of her county involvement, she also became involved on a statewide level in the New Jersey School Boards Association, serving in the position of Legislative Contact as well as State Resolutions Coordinator.

Joanne’s goal in life is to continually be on-the-go and in-the-know. Her various involvements range from the Passaic County Education Associations (First Vice President and Secretary), to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Community Outreach Foundation (Secretary), and Commissioner on the Passaic County Board of Social Services. Again, it shows volunteering and helping others is what it’s all about.

Joanne is actively involved in the Passaic County Democratic Party. One of her most recent accomplishments is WE DO, Women Empowered Democratic Organization. Joanne, along with several other prominent women, formed this politically-active women’s group. She serves as its Vice President and is very proud of its many accomplishments within its three-year existence. WE DO continues to excel and fights the fight every day in fostering the values of the Democratic Party. She also serves as a Liaison/Finance Committee Member for Senator Pou as well as a volunteer for Congressman Pascrell.

Joanne attributes her giving nature and selfless qualities to a strong religious upbringing. She is an active parishioner of St. Anthony Church in Hawthorne. She is thankful for being able to continue to do what she loves to do: helping others. Joanne is humbled to receive this award and congratulates all the other 2013 recipients on a job well done.

Monther Harb

Monther Harb was born in Amman, Jordan on June 28, 1975. He moved to Paterson, New Jersey with his family in 1993. He is happily married to Ola Harb for 10 years and they have 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl. They currently still live in the great City of Paterson.

Mr. Harb has been very active in the Arab community since his arrival to America. He is very active with youth recreation and advocating for more recreational opportunities for all kids. He

also played an integral part in the creation of the United Arab-American Coalition. Monther became very active in the Democratic Party when he saw first hand how the party values and philosophy helped out his community and neighbors.

For the past 5 years, Monther has been owner of Echo News, a community based newspaper. A very well respected publisher, Monther uses the newspaper to get important information out to residents of the Greater Paterson Area. An initiative that he is working very hard on is introducing elected officials and their accomplishments to members of his community. He feels that it is important for all residents to know whom they are represented by and makes every effort to relay that information.

MARY I. HOLLOWAY

I have been an active member of the Woodland

Park Democratic Party for the past nine years,

having been involved with many campaigns and

endless fund raising events.

For the past 26 years I have been employed as a

Licensed Funeral Director with the Vander Plaat

Funeral Home, Wyckoff, NJ. I am a member of

the Passaic County Funeral Directors Association,

having served as Secretary, the New Jersey

Funeral Directors Association and the Academy

of Professional Funeral Service Practice and a

graduate of the American Academy McAllister

Institute of Funeral Service, New York, NY.

I am on the Board of Trustee for the Alfred H.

Baumann Free Public Library, currently serving as

Treasurer. I am a member of St. Elizabeth’s RC

Church, Wyckoff where I serve as a Eucharistic

Minister and member of the Liturgy Committee

and a member of the Lupus Foundation, NJ

Chapter.

A former Board Member for Passaic Valley

Hospice, and former coordinator and facilitator

for “Rainbows for All Children”, a free program

offered to children who are grieving from a death

or divorce. Having been raised in the Town of

Boonton, along with my five siblings, I attended

local public schools and graduated from County

College of Morris with an Associates Degree in

Criminal Justice and volunteered on the Boonton

Kiwanis Ambulance Squad.

Currently, I am a resident of the Borough of

Woodland Park since 2000, where I reside with

my husband, Councilman Gary W. Holloway.


Manuel (Manny) Lora

Manuel Lora was born in Santo Domingo in The Dominican Republic. He came

to New Jersey in 1981. He attended Passaic County Community College where he received 2 Diplomas in Criminal Justice, and Computer Information Systems.

He has been married to his wife Kenia for 22 years, and they currently reside with their 2 children Alex and Michelle in the City Clifton New Jersey. He has been working for The Passaic County Board of Social Services in Paterson for the past 22 years.

He is currently president of united Latin Americans of Clifton since 2001, and he has been

a member of The Passaic County Democratic Committee since 2006. He attends St. Brendan’s Church in Clifton, and St Anthony’s Church in Passaic.

Manny has been recognized by Quisqueya International, Casa Quisqueya, and El Latino Show with a Meritorious Dominican Award. From 1993 to 1998 he was president of The Passaic County Employee Softball League, and he was President of the Passaic County College until 1985.


Gary Marchese

Gary Marchese was born in Passaic, NJ where he grew up with his sister Josephine

DeVoe. Gary has been married for 38 years to Joan DeGraw Marchese. They have three children, Lori Marchese-Puleo, Brad Marchese, and Gary Marchese, Jr. He is also a proud grandfather of Nicholas 2 and Alexandra 4.

Gary is retired from the Passaic County Board of Social Services where he had worked until 2010. He was a High School football referee for over 20 years. Gary currently works as a Medicaid Consultant with Eldercaid.

Gary’s political involvement goes back to 1977 as a member of the Wayne Democratic Club.

Gary has been a member of the Passaic County Democratic Comm. Since 1977, a position he still holds. He has served as President of the Wayne Democratic club from 1986-1987, then again from 2006-2011.

He served as Wayne Democratic Municipal Leader and worked on the Waks for Mayor Campaigns in 1993,and 1997. He has been the Treasurer of the Wayne Democratic Club; He currently serves as the Treasurer of the Wayne Democratic Leadership Fund and was the Treasurer of the McIntrre Team 2001 Wayne Election Campaign for Mayor. Gary was a Candidate for Wayne First Ward Council in 2011.Gary’s selfless concern for his community makes him an ideal recipient of the Jersey Insider Community Activist Award.


Luz Stella Posada

Luz Stella Posada was born in Colombia and moved to the United States in

1972. Ultimately, she came to reside in Pompton Lakes in 1991. Since arriving in Pompton, Luz has been very active in the community. In fact, she helped to organize the first Spanish language mass at St. Mary’s Church. This particular service is now well attended and an important part of St. Mary’s Parish. Luz has also volunteered by driving senior citizens to their doctor’s appointments. In addition to her volunteering her time, in 2003 Luz became involved with the Democratic Party of Pompton Lakes. In 2004, she became a member of the Lion’s ClubSimon Bolivar in Paterson, and as of 2010 is a member of the executive board.

In 2005, while watching the news, Luz saw a segment on less fortunate families inColombia. It was during the Christmas season, and these families had no clothes, food, or toysfor their children. This inspired Luz to form a non-profit organization with the purpose of raisingfunds for needy families in Colombia. Luz assembled a group of friends and founded theorganization, Asociacion de Mujeres Amigas (AMA), with the idea of sending food to familiesfor Christmas. AMA then expanded its scope and began to send supplies to orphanagesand nursing homes in Colombia. AMA supplied the orphanages with clothes, toys, and schoolsupplies, while supplying the nursing homes with wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches.

Last year, at Serenity Yoga and Wellness Spa in Woodland Park, AMA was able to providegifts and coats to thirty-five children from Paterson, New Jersey for Christmas. This year, Luz plans to expand AMA’s domestic aid, by providing for less fortunate men, women, and children in Passaic County.

Luz is married to Rodolfo Posada and has two children Katherine DeJesus and David Posada.Luz also has three adorable grandchildren Paige 8, Robert 7, and Sofia 5.


George Silva

George Silva, born and raised in New Jersey, is originally from Iselin and moved to Clifton

35 years ago. George is one of three children born to Kathleen and Frederick Silva. George attended Woodbridge Township School System and was a member of the first graduating class of the newly named John F. Kennedy High School in 1962. George was always active in sports and played football and baseball in his youth. George remained active in sports, becoming a Coach for the Woodbridge Township Youth Association. While in Woodbridge, George became active in many civic organizations including the American Italian Heritage Society and Woodbridge Recreation Board. In his professional life George has served as the Manager of Crib and Teen City in the Pine Brook and Springfield Stores. He was also the past owner of Competitive Casket Inc. which was located in the in Historic Botany Village part of

Clifton. Currently George is the Office Manager of Van Tassel Funeral Home in Bloomfield, NJ. A community icon, George has been involved in many aspects of community life in Clifton. He is the founder and now a trustee of the Historic Botany Village SID (Special Improvement District). This organization, through George’s involvement, has led to many improvements and visibility in the city of Clifton. George is the Co-President of the Dutch Hill Residents Association. In this role, George assists the Dutch Hill community in fundraising and community awareness. George is also their liaison to Action Clifton, a City-run organization which provides an avenue for citizens to voice their concerns and ideas. George is a recently appointed trustee to CASA (Clifton Against Substance Abuse) continuing his lifelong theme of helping youth. George is also an appointed member by the Clifton City Council to the Clifton Cable Advisory Board.

George naturally arose as the “Go to Person” in Clifton, and was recognized for his efforts by Assemblyman Thomas Giblin. George was appointed as the Liaison to Assemblyman Thomas Giblin in the 34th Legislative District representing Passaic and Essex Counties. Assemblyman Giblin recognized that George could assist him in serving his constituents. George’s role in Passaic County continues to grow and George was appointed in 2012 as a member of Friends of Passaic County Parks. Known around town as a Democratic leader, George serves his Democratic party with pride and distinction. He has his pulse on the City and is highly respected by all, regardless of their political association. He usually can be found on a Saturday or Sunday in Clifton attending numerous events throughout the city and helping or volunteering. He exemplifies the role of community leadership.


Henry Antonio Sosa

Henry Antonio Sosa born to Maria Valdez & Donato Sosa in a beautiful Island the

Dominican Republic on December 20, 1971, Henry is the 1st born of 4. He has 2 brothers and a sister. At the age of 13 Henry’s parents decided to migrate to USA, as many, with the American Dream of having a better future.Upon arrival to the states they arrived to the City of Passaic, which is where Henry attended school # 4 and later on went to Passaic High School where he graduated in 1990. Soon after graduating high school Henry had his first child Chrystal Sosa, and decided to postpone college, and got a job in the automotive industry instead. For the next 16 years Henry moved up the corporate latter from sales representative to assistant manager, to Sub-Prime Finance Director. It was in the automotive industry where Henry learned the real value of customer service, always

putting great customer service and bridge building before the margin of profits. In 2009 due to economic slowdown in the auto industry Henry decided that it was time for a career move, and enrolled at Anthem College in Jersey City where he receive certification in Graphics Design with a 4.0 GPA. He currently is enrolled at DeVry University where he is pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Web Design. Henry has made a transition from the auto industry into the marketing industry where he has created and continues to build on his strengths in auto sales, and his newfound techniques in Web/Graphic design. Henry does his fair share of community service and is a proud member of PEOC a parent group that organizes and advocates for public education. Henry also does community work in the areas of immigration; often doing free citizenship drives for senior Citizens of Latino and Bangladeshi backgrounds. Henry is also very heavily involved and active in Local politics where he volunteers for Democratic candidates and elected officials. In his free time Henry is an avid reader who likes to be informed not just of local and national government, but the psychology of human behavior as well. One of his favorite reads is the Art of Seduction and The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. Henry’s favorite quote is “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” by J.F.K. which to Henry it’s a constant reminder of his commitment to civic involvement.Henry has 3 children and a woman who loves him and will do anything for Him!!!!!!


Lisa S. WashingtonLisa S. Washington Was born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, and has been a lifelong resident of Passaic County, presently residing in Passaic, New Jersey. Educated in the Paterson Public School System and graduated from Kennedy High School.

She began her career in Law Enforcement with the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department in 1989,as a Correction Officer, graduating from the Passaic County Police Academy in 1991.

Her Initial assignment was the Passaic County Jail; however reassignment to the County Courthouse came in 2003, where she worked until 2004; She was then promoted to the rank of Sergeant. She worked as a Sergeant at the jail until 2010; she was then transferred to the Internet Crime Unit until a newly

formed unit within the Community Policing Department called {HOW) House of Worship, building and improving relationships with churches and the community, utilizing a faith based initiative. In 2011, she was transferred to the jail and assigned to Administration, until she was promoted to Acting Deputy Warden on May 28, 2011and then on December 1,2011 she was promoted to Undersheriff. She is the first Afro American female and the highest-ranking female in the history of Passaic County.She is an active member of Seminary Baptist Church in Paterson since1996, and she also serves as Vice President of a basketball organization in Paterson, Parents Who Care (PWC).

Pasquale (Pat) DiIanni

Pasquale (Pat) DiIanni was born in Paterson, NJ. He attended school in Paterson and Clifton. Pat

received his Bachelor and Masters of Art degrees from Teachers College of Montclair State. Mr. DiIanni served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954. After being honorably discharged, he was awarded a Bachelor of Law degree in 1957 and his Juris Doctorate in 1968.

Pat started his law career in private practice. He then was appointed Assistant Prosecutor for the County of Passaic in the early 1960’s. He then became the Municipal Attorney for the Borough of Pompton Lakes in the early 1970’s. Pat us currently semi-retired in a law firm in Clifton.

Pat DiIanni’s leadership as a Democrat has been an inspiration to many, not only in Clifton, but throughout the entire county. He considers the formation of Vision 2020 one of his largest accomplishments. The nonprofit was dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for many if the citizens in out county. Pat served on the Passaic County Improvement Board and subsequently to the Passaic County Board of Elections. He was also an advocate to have the Great Falls in Paterson designated as a National Park and testified before Congress in order to make this happen.

Presently, Mr. DiIanni is the chairman of the Passaic County Board of History and Tourism, where was also instrumental in establishing, with the help of the Passaic County Freeholder Board.

Pat has been married to his beautiful wife, Millie DiIanni for the past 27 years and he has five children, Patricia, Denise, Diane, Ric, and David
