FEBRUARY

What a celebraon it was!

On December 20th, 2018 the Town of Walpole held a ceremonial ribbon cung

for the new home of the Walpole Council on Aging; the Walpole Coopera!ve

Bank South Street Center. There was much excitement and the event a)racted a

standing room only crowd that filled nearly all 15,000 square feet of space. On-

lookers tuned in in the many new program areas via the live recording by Walpole

Media TV. It was a moment for the Walpole seniors, many of whom have hoped

and worked for this building for decades. The gathering was a true testament to

the sense of community in this “friendly town.” Neighbors took care of neighbors

to raise over one million dollars that had been pledged by the Friends of Walpole

Elders at the Fall 2016 Town Mee!ng. It was a lovely day filled with tours led by

the Junior Women’s Club of Walpole, gra!tude, smiles, and indeed awe. The ex-

citement con!nued on January 2, 2019 when we held our official Grand Opening

and “toasted” to new beginnings. Open House style programming helped to ease

us all into our new space and in no !me, old friends and new friends alike found

cozy spots with the paper or shared coffee by the fire. The billiard tables were

busy and our incredible Volunteer Ambassadors and Board Members gave nearly

100 hours of their !me and talents to share our new home with approximately

400 people during our very first week. As we start the 50th year of the Walpole

Council on Aging, we know that there are many new adventures ahead and hope

you will join us to create the next great chapter of the Walpole Council on Aging.

A NOTE FROM THE OUTREACH WORKER

Hello, everyone,

This month, I’d like to tell you about a program new to Walpole. The pro-

gram is called Interface, it is a mental health referral service. The Senior

Center is proud to have been part of the committee made up of people

who work at Walpole Housing, the police and fire departments, the Health department, the

School committee, along with our counterparts from the same departments in Norwood, Riv-

erside Community Care and Norwood Hospital. Many of the same people on this committee

are part of the Community Intervention Team (CCIT), a meeting at which Interface was first

introduced.

Any Walpole resident who would like to find a counselor to speak to is welcome to use this

service. The phone number of Interface is 888-244-6843, they are available Monday—Friday,

9:00AM—5:00PM. Interface will ask questions regarding the issues the resident is calling

about, the insurance provider, and availability for appointments. The call may be made by

anyone, but it is best to have the person seeking help available to answer questions. Inter-

face will take all the information and provide a case number. The case number assigned is to

protect confidentiality and should be referred to in any follow up phone calls. Interface will

call the resident back with a “match” (someone who specializes in the issues needed and ac-

cepts the resident’s insurance), the resident would then call and make an appointment. Inter-

face will follow up, usually within 2 weeks, to be sure the counselor is a good match for the

resident. Brochures are available for those who would like more information.

I have a request, please. I am happy to help anyone needing assistance. However, if your

issue will take time, it is always best to make an appointment. Doing so will guarantee each

person gets the time needed and attention deserved. My office hours for appointments are

listed below. Fuel assistance, SNAP and SHINE appointments always require an appoint-

ment.

Upon arrival, please check in with the front desk and they will notify me of your arrival.

Please have a seat and I will be with you as soon as possible. These steps are requested to

respect the privacy and confidentiality of anyone who is already in my office. Thank you for

your understanding on this issue.

4 Ways Music Benefits Seniors

Music is an important part of everyday life. We listen to songs dur-

ing our workouts, in our car, and just about everywhere in be-

tween. But did you know music offers incredible benefits? Yes, mu-

sic can be used to improve health, enhance moods, and even im-

prove memory. Learn more about the benefits of music and how it

can be beneficial to your.

Psychological Benefits of Music

Seniors who listen to music have a happier outlook on life and are

shown to have better social interaction. Music has shown to enhance moods, improve interest levels and in-

crease positive emotions. Those with dementia and Alzheimer’s have been known to increase communication

with others after listening to music since a song can trigger a memory from when they were younger.

Health Benefits of Music

Studies show that music promotes positive overall health. Those that listen to music often have better nights of

sleep, diminished pain and improved recovery time. Music has also shown to increase mobility, coordination,

and overall cognitive abilities. Finnish researchers found that patients who listened to music following a stroke

experienced a faster recovery of verbal skills. Listening to music can also promote physical activity including

dancing.

Memory Benefits

Studies have shown when a person listens to music that corresponds with an important time, place, event or

emotion for the listener, the brain’s memory maker, also known as the medial prefrontal cortex, becomes stim-

ulated. Music therapy for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients has proven to help stimulate this type of brain ac-

tivity. Some Alzheimer's and dementia patients who have lost the ability to speak have been known to still hum

along with songs.

Stress Reduction

Music can also help settle down seniors when they become stressed and agitated. It has shown to increase re-

laxation and selfesteem, while reducing tension and anxiety. Soothing music, like doowop or jazz, can help

with a senior who is agitated.

How to Integrate Music into Your Life

It is easier than ever to bring music into your life. Not only has technology made once forgotten media available

at the tip of our fingers, live music is more abundant than ever. Here are several music activities for seniors to

try out:

•Create a personalized playlist with songs you enjoy

•Take a friend or loved one to a live concert in your area

•Take up an instrument you once played

•Have a singalong, they help promote a sense of community

•Search YouTube to watch live performances from favorite artists
