Keynote Spotlight Meet TrelawnyBoynton

By Sienna Abdulahad

As I pack up my office and prepare to transition into the role of graduate assistant for the Virginia Tech Intercultural Engagement Center, a saying came to mind. “You don’t know what you don’t know.” I heard this during IPDS: New Professionals Orientation from our ACUI CEO John Taylor. It resonated with me as a new professional. I didn’t know that going to the 2014 ACUI annual conference in Orlando would lead me down a new career path. I definitely didn’t know I could handle late night programming and advising students while serving in my primary role as a communications specialist. I most certainly didn’t know there was a way to attend graduate school without putting up my first born as collateral for tuition. All of this only reinforces the fact that I need to trust the processes that come with developing as a higher education professional.

Building community with other new professionals helped me get comfortable with not knowing where my decision to attend graduate school will take me. I got to know some amazing people and we connected on a number of levels. I believe this network of new friends will give us all an opportunity to share the many ways we all use campus resources get to nine.

The highlight of IPDS was engaging in intentional workshops on budgeting, marketing, assessment, supervision, legal issues, and professional development. Participating in relevant sessions led by experts was refreshing. Many times you find yourself in workshops that don’t build capacity. The time spent on these issues equipped us with the tools to handle many of the unknowns that come with working in this profession.

Reflections on IPDS will happen for years to come. It was an unforgettable experience that has had a lasting effect on me as a member of ACUI and a scholarship recipient. I’m forever inspired to be more like Chuck.
