A Formula That Works!A Formula That Works!Since 2006, The Actuarial Foundation and Scholastic have partnered to place interesting and practical math challenges in the hands of teachers nationwide.

This series of fun math programs are designed to build and reinforce important math skills for students. Aligning with NCTM Standards, the materials provide real-world math for students to become successful in the classroom and beyond.

The Actuarial Foundation now has a total of five turnkey classroom modules on Scholastic.com, effectively owning math on Scholastic.com with units that are centered around dynamic and relevant themes that are pulled directly from teacher requests.

Here’s What Teachers Say…Here’s What Teachers Say…This is just a sampling of the enthusiastic feedback from teachers about Expect the Unexpected With Math:

Year One: It is user friendly and brings real life activities to my class. We are doing probability at this time, it was perfect.I am always looking for applicable ways to teach statistics.

Year Two: The question variety in the activities provides lessons for 5 th grade and wonderful enrichment for 4th. Visual, real-life, shows students the relevance of math to their lives Perfect timing – We just started our study of graphs. Aligns with our curriculum. It was colorful and slick with eye appeal to children, so they used it and were interested in a way they aren’t with duplicated pages.

Year Three: The poster is awesome- the students will pay attention to it because it is "rockin".It is relevant. Kids relate to the whole rock band theme. Fun!This was timely; we're going to be on these lessons next week. They are upbeat, makes kids think, are more in line with who they are.

Year Four: Directly relates to curriculum and colorful, easy-to-read format. This program looks like it will be a great foundation builder.A different approach—students get to visualize geometry around [their] environment. These are complicated problems that practice middle-school standards and enhance critical thinking skills.
