Acts 2:1-21 God Put Fire on Their Heads! What language do you speak? Since youʼre reading this in English, itʼs a pretty good guess that you speak English. Now, imagine that youʼre in a room where everyone around you speaks different languages. You are the only person who speaks English and you canʼt understand anything anyone is saying. Okay, fine. You go about your business. Maybe you play on a cellphone or an iPad and you ignore everyone. Or, maybe you use Google to look up some words and figure out how to say a few things to them. Like, “Do you want some of this cake?” Or, “Where is the bathroom?” Now, imagine that all of a sudden WHOOOOOSH, thereʼs a sound like a big, huge wind and it looks like there are little campfires floating above everyoneʼs heads. And when it happens, you can understand everything everyone is saying. But you didnʼt take any language classes to learn their languages. Now what do you think? What do you do? Did you know that this really happened a long time ago? Peter and the other disciples were in a room full of people who spoke many different languages. They were all there to celebrate the Pentecost. That was the day they all gathered together to remember the time God gave them the ten commandments. But, they were from so many different places that they couldnʼt talk to each other. They couldn’t talk about the food. They couldn’t ask about the bathroom. And they sure couldnʼt talk to each other about God. Then WHOOSH! God solved the problem. Godʼs Spirit came into the room and made all the difference. The people who were there thought it looked like little flames of fire were over their heads and it sounded like a big wind. What do you think Godʼs Spirit looks and moves and sounds like? What do you think Godʼs Spirit can do in the world now? This is the day we call Pentecost. Sometimes we call it the birthday of the church. Happy Pentecost! And may Godʼs Spirit come WHOOSHING into your life in wonderful ways. Click here for a full size Pentecost coloring page.
