were swimming wearing masks and snorkels. The attack took place in front of the Bay restaurant, an unsupervised area where bathing is forbidden due to the high number of sharks. The attack was witnessed by the friend of the girl who had got out of the water moments earlier, according to the AFP news agency. INJURY: Fatal. The girl’s body was severed at the torso, the lower part was carried away by the shark. Gina Hoarau, director of public safety in St. Paul. reported that the police helicopter flew over the area of the attack, while firefighters and lifeguards were searching by boat for the girl’s remains. Her funeral was held on Thursday July 18, 2013 in Saint-Denis. SPECIES: A spate of shark attacks in 2012 off Reunion prompted France to hire a team of professional fishermen to kill around 20 of them but Paris refused to mount a widespread cull. Following the fatal shark attack on May 8, 2013, a protocol was established which allowed local fishing for sharks for 72 hours in the area of an attack. On Monday, July 15, 2012, four fishing boats were mobilized in an attempt to catch the shark. On Wednesday at 18h00 a 3.1-metre female bull shark was captured, and at 22h00 a 2.8-metre male weighing more than 200 pounds was captured 200 metres from shore by one of the boats, Wayan, captained by Thierry Gazzo.

Shark attacks at Reunion: "There is no guarantee that the threat disappears" INTERVIEW - The researcher and shark specialist Bernard Seret returns to "20 Minutes" on the new shark attack that hit Reunion ... Sharks continue to kill at Reunion. After a surfer in May, there is a 15 year old girl who has just been killed by a shark on Monday. More worryingly, the second victim of the year is the first to have suffered an attack so close to the shore, 5 m from the edge. For 20 Minutes, Bernard Seret, a researcher at the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) seconded to the National Museum of Natural History in Paris gives us his analysis of the situation. It is also the first attack near a coast. How to explain it? So far, only surfers were referred, mainly on the reef area of Saint-Gilles and Saint-Leu. Here the situation is different since we are in St. Paul, on a beach of black sand, volcanic, plunging quickly into the sea is a dangerous area for bathing, known as such because sharks can get very close. In addition, the marine cemetery near the site of the tragedy brings organic matter that appeals to sharks. This may be related. These are the same reasons as for attacks on surfers? We can never be completely sure, but there is a strong likelihood that the presence of sharks is related to the increased activity of man. This has an impact on the reef and water degradation. So, harmless sharks were there - such as the Pointe-white - have given way to Bulldog or Tiger sharks, less regardantes species on water quality. But the Bulldogs have always been there. Previously, they simply evolved further. The problem is that surfing spots are on the reef area, where a reserve was set up in 2007 to allow the reef to recover and extinct species back. Unfortunately without success. And what drives these sharks to attack humans? Perhaps there is a connection with the scarcity of food. You should know that these sharks are constantly hunting and when they attack, it is fortuitous. All they intersect, if it is not a congener, resembles either a prey or a predator. And when one thinks Bulldog spot a prey, it bites live. What solutions exist to protect the public? There are no miracle solutions, although pens have already been put in place to protect the activity of swimming or fishing ... It is especially necessary to better understand these animals. It is the interest of the "knowledge of the ecology and habitat of two species of coastal sharks on the west

coast of Reunion" (Charc), established in 2011 program. The first results should occur in 2014, but there is a lag time between science and the reality of the situation ... With these attacks, experts are also often attacked on the ground. Is there an interest in killing the killer shark, as authorized by the prefect after this tragedy? When you are sure that a shark in particular is responsible for the attack, it may be worth. Here I would say that hunting has a psychological value. It may have a temporary calming effect. Many fish can also reduce the risk temporarily. But in the long term, there is no guarantee that the threat disappears. And it can also have an economic and environmental costs. That is to say? These solutions include intensive fishing have been tried in South Africa. But besides the cost, this proved to be a bloodbath for other species of fish or turtles that were caught in nets. Could be considered to be in Australia, where they have invested in protection. But it's expensive. And there, surfers have mostly integrated risk posed by sharks. So, do not blame the public authority to be responsible. This is not the case surfers Reunion? Some surfers are awarded spots and want to practice their hobby safely. Which is understandable. But do we have the means to set up a brigade officials for some time to? Either they must incorporate this risk, or they will have to go elsewhere. And what about sharks who've attacked humans. Are they dangerous? This is pure fantasy. This is the so-called "Rogue Shark" (rogue shark) theory that a shark that has bitten a human would be tempted to do so again ... But it does not make sense. No scientist believes it. SOURCE: 20 Minutes, July 16, 2013, http://www.20minutes.fr/societe/1189231-20130716-attaques-requins-a-reunion-rien-garantit-menace-disparaisse
